This company has bought out many small exterminating companies in the past few years and has RUINED the industry in CT. I used a local company, Ocon, for nearly 16 years. They were reliable, friendly, accommodating, and reasonable. They would call me every month to schedule service and I became friendly with the scheduler and the technician. They would come on an exact time and would also be very helpful if I had an issue. After JP McHale bought them, the whole experience has gone DOWNHILL. They send an email out the day before they show up giving you a 3 hour window without checking to see if your home. When you call them and leave a message that the day/time doesn't work for you, they show up anyway. They send a different technician each time so there's no continuity in service providers. I have been trying to contact a supervisor to explain my dissatisfaction. He called me back three days later, left a message and hasn't returned my 3 return phone calls since. The problem is there are hardly any small companies left-JP McHale has bought them. This company needs to start caring about their customers!! read more

I signed up for a lawn maintenance plan in September 2020. The plan consisted of 5 visits per year, at a cost of $85 per visit. The first two visits were completed as agreed in October and December. In January, a representative called and said they had decided to discontinue my program, and the only option was a different plan costing over $150. I said I was under the impression we had a contract, and wouldn't they live up to their end. In speaking with the rep, and then her supervisor, they offered no further explanation or alternatives. If you intend to use their services, beware they may change the price within the contract period. read more

We signed up with JP McHale for the annual plan a few months ago and have been really impressed so far. Our technician Nathan is great, he's thorough, explains everything well, very courteous, super helpful. They follow up with us constantly to make sure we're happy with the service and aren't experiencing continuing or new issues. We use them indoor and outdoor for everything - wasps, carpenter bees, spiders - last time I even asked about clover mites overrunning the back deck and they got that too. Overall everyone's been very responsive and it's been great service. So glad they were recommended to us on NextDoor. read more

My advice....I would be cautious using this company. This is an excerpt from an email I sent about five days ago with no response to date. "To Jeffrey, I reviewed the attached inspection from your company from when my husband and I purchased our home back in December 2019. There is no mention of any obstructions to the porch in our home (as stated on inspection). Therefore, the inspector should have been able to conduct a thorough inspection of that area. It was noted no visible evidence of wood destroying insects. During the free inspection today, Pete was able to easily identify frass in our porch when he tapped on the wall. Now that my husband and I are in the home more often we have noticed at least 10 carpenter ants in our home per day which most likely signifies a carpenter ant problem. Although we are out of our warranty period by a few weeks there is no way this problem occurred in three weeks. This has been a problem in this home for sometime. Several tree cutting services identified areas outside of the home (specifically on the wood shed) that has extensive damage from carpenter ants." When we called prior to this email we were told they would do a free inspection because of this situation - little did we know the company at that time was offering free inspections so they were not doing us a favor or anything. I would select a Zero if available. Was a terrific local pest management company for years. Now acquired by a larger private equity-owned company (EQT) customer service is beyond horrible. Appointments are not kept - and customer not notified. Customer service hangs up if they can't resolve. The only time they proactively reach out is when they are trying to renew the annual contract. If you are lucky enough to get someone to service the property, the service technician has never been the same. They do the absolute minimum when here and no longer look for a long term solution to the problem - as they did when the family used to run a local business. Search elsewhere. Horrible company; stay away! They acquired Amtech, the wonderful local company that handled my pest control and the ruined it. Customer service is nonexistent. They schedule services and then do not show up, but still attempt to charge you. You can't get anyone on the phone and when you finally do, they are rude and unapologetic for their mistakes. I had zero issues with Amtech, but once JP McHale took over, it went all downhill. I cancelled my service and found another company to work with. Very disappointing! read more

This is the worst company I have ever had the misfortune of working with. I'm part of their pest prevention program and am supposed to have 3 visits annually. They repeatedly don't show up with no follow up. They cancelled once due to inclement weather and didn't show up the following week when they said they would. When i called to inquire as to why they didn't show up, person said she had no idea. They finally came today and the guy was beyond rude. I have 2 more visits in my contract and most definitely will not be renewing my contract. read more

The good: they come out when you call and will do repeat visits. They have an app but it was not reliable for scheduling service. The bad: they will call several times to continue annual contract. I was reluctant as the home was going on the market but was assured that I could cancel and get refund for remaining time on contract. I called to cancel one month ago and have not received a refund. I called again to followup. They recognize the cancellation and am waiting on a callback to see why I haven't been refunded. No one will explain it. They mentioned that they see how many times they have visited and decide if any funds are due back. This was not in any paperwork that I saw and sounds arbitrary. I am out a full years contract and had a fall preventative treatment and just over four months into the annual service when I cancelled. Update: I have since received a phone call and apology from the VP who is going to personally oversee the refund. The technicians do a good job and I'm sorry that the admin side of things left such a poor reflection at the end. read more

We have called multiple times and each time a technician comes, weeks after you call, whatever they do DOES NOT WORK. This company charges you without actual Results and then lock you into a contact. I am canceling my contracts with this company! Their service is horrendous. I have an annual contract for pest service AND termite control and they cannot get to my home for a service appointment on a timely basis. I have waited 4 1/2 weeks for an appointment and they arrived at 6:15 today and said they couldn't do anything about the spider mites infesting my terrace (because it is raining) or the huge hornets nest above my terrace (because they didn't bring a bee suit). The company cannot even get their service instructions correct to their workers so that they come prepared to do the job. Pitiful! read more

Saw termites swarming on my property, coming from a railroad tie wall next to my patio. I have an annual service contract, including termite monitoring. They said it would be two weeks before they could get here, BUT, if I sent them a photo of the swarm and they verified it was termites, then they would try to expedite someone coming out to check out the situation. I did so, and, yet, it was termites. But I've made 5 calls and spoken with 4 representatives there over the past week, and they all said that they were in touch with the routers (schedulers) and that someone would call me back. No one has called me back. Stu and Anthony, both managers who were contacted by the customer service reps, were supposed to call me back, but neither did. At JP McHale they appear to use only email to communicate with each other there, like we're in 2005 -- no use of IM, no texting, no phone calls -- but I guess funneling everything through email gives them the ability to ignore customers because they could say they hadn't yet seen the email. So here we are, one week later, I'm very concerned about the termite situation, and no one, not a router, not a manager, has reached out to me. I just want to talk to someone in a position of responsibility, but that seems impossible. What is most galling is that when you call, a recording of Jim McHale comes on and says if you are one of our valued annual service protection customers, press 1 -- as if you will be given some type of priority. As if... Maybe they've grown too large to service all of their customers. But obviously they take their customers for granted, including their annual service customers. Find another company for your pest control needs. UPDATE: After I posted this review, I did finally hear back from Anthony on a Friday evening. I appreciate the outreach. They have promised to expedite getting someone out to look around my property. Still, I shouldn't have have to make 5 calls spread over a week to get someone to pay attention. I see from other reviews that the ownership has changed, and that has contributed to a worsening of service. I hope that's not the case. You can buy a "brand", but if you don't deliver on the brand promise, you'll quickly lose your consumer goodwill and loyalty. Canceled my service. Pay $150/ month for tick and mosquito, a tick on my kids, my dog, and my mother in law in my yard that's NOT EVEN WOODED. Mosquito spray does absolutely nothing. Home spray outdoors is useless too, I think the spiders are actually multiplying from it!!!!! COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SERVICE. Last year they subcontracted for ticks and they were AMAZING. After a number of reminders, the manager sent a very apologetic email in which he promised to send a technician to my home to perform an exterior service. Unfortunately, the problem was inside my home and an exterior service had already been performed. I informed JP McHale that I had lost confidence in them and wished to terminate our contract. They agreed to a partial refund and promised to send a check. I received it two weeks later but I had to call them again. read more

I have used them for years and recommended them to many friends and clients. In the last 2-3 years the level of service has gone steadily down hill. This year they skipped one of my tick applications. Told me they'd refund me and never did. This past Friday my application was supposed to be done. The tech pulled into my driveway. Talked on his cell phone for a while. My husband was in the driveway getting things out of his truck. He then observes the tech pull out of the driveway and pull into my neighbors driveway (who was having a real estate showing). He stayed in that driveway for a while on the phone and then left. When I spoke to someone at the office the next day I was assured that someone would come on either Saturday or Monday. Well surprise surprise no one came ! I WILL NOT BE RENEWING ANY SERVICES WITH THEM AND WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE EVER AGAIN!! read more

I've taken photos of critters and they have gotten back to me asap with an answer and always seem to bring levity to an aspect of life most can do without. Scheduling appointments is easy on the app as well. NOTE: One of the drivers accidentally ran over a lamp post in my driveway (it's a difficulty driveway to navigate), and within minutes someone called me and offered to pay for the replacement in full. We have been loyal customers for years, including hiring them to insulate our crawl space less than three years ago. We paid more to them because we trusted them to know what they are doing. We took all of their recommended advise on scope of services. They especially sold the rockwool type insulation as being resistant to mold growth. We had never had an issue with mold, but figured we'd just go with the best. The job came to over $8k. Fast forward to today and we are trying to sell the house. At the inspection they discover that the crawl space is full of mold. As I said before, we had never had any even potential issues with mold before the new insulation. The only change made to the crawl space was the new insulation and a sump pump they also recommended and we had them install. When we got a second opinion for the mold removal we were told that the insulation moisture barrier installation had been done incorrectly. Despite this, they are taking no responsibility for helping to create the conditions for mold growth and are now trying to charge us $25k to remove the old, moldy insulation and reinstall new insulation. It feels like they are running a racket and we are livid. Spend less elsewhere and save yourself both a giant headache and a fortune. read more

My only complaint is that I didn't start using them 17 years ago!! After dealing with the horrible national companies Scott"s Lawn Care then Trugreen (both companies had zero clue on maintaining lawn care) We found JP McHale and 2 years later we not only use them for our lawn in addition inside and outside bug preventive maintenance and their tree service. These guys are basically a scam. The two exterminators I've had in the past thirty years always did regluar services to keep my home free of bugs. I hired JP Mchale and they sold me on a comprehensive package costing around $2k per year. They cam a couple times then stopped coming. When we started noticing several types of flying and crawling bugs in the house I called them and they told me that they don't come unless we call them (I guess that would be when we see bugs which sounds like it's too late). I generally don't like paying (in this case a lot) for something that I don''t get so I cancelled the service. read more

I received a quote from JP McHale for home pest control. It included a $130 "intensive set up fee" as an add on cost. I talked to Jeffrey in sales to have him explain this fee. He told me the first visit has a lot of extra work, determining the problem, setting up the right treatment, and usually additional product in the first application. The first visit was within their arrival window and lasted 15 minutes. A quick question about where and what pests we see. Then application of a few drops around the kitchen counter, a quick spray along the baseboards inside, and a spray along the foundation outside. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THAT ANY REASONABLE CONSUMER WOULD CONSIDER "INTENSIVE". I have no doubt their work will address any pests, but I don't believe the consumer gets anything for the $130 "intensive set up fee" on top of their $550 annual fee. I suggest the buyer beware and resist these add on fees with no observable benefit or reason. read more

If I could give zero stars honestly I would. They spray my complex everyone and I mean everyone has dogs here. When they spray the grass no one can walk their dogs. I called my board to ask why they can't leave a spot open only to be told they are suppose to , actually an ENTIRE patch of grass in the beginning of the complex which they never do I guess so they don't have to come back because of pure laziness. I can even say I've witnessed the laziness when ALL the workers decided to be laid out in the grass just lounging around. Working hard or not at all? Truly pathetic. read more

I too, like the last reviewer have cancelled my lawn fertilizer contract with JP McHale.... I had used them for a few years and was very satisfied with the results..My Lawn looked great and I received many compliments from the neighbors. i had originally met Doug thru a very good friend that owns a golf course in Dutchess County. They were always there when they said they would be and i thought that their fees were very reasonable.. This January I received an e-mail stating that they were changing my program to the "premier program" which looks just like the plan i had already been receiving.. They had increased my price by 80%..i could understand maybe 20%. I then received a call a few weeks later to tell me that i had not signed and returned my contract.. i notified the person calling me that i was very unhappy with the 80% increase and asked if they could do better.. I was told they could not as it was their "new" premier service so i advised them to cancel my contract.. i found another company in Dutchess County that was willing to give me the exact same program for $50 less per application.. Saving me $250.00 a year...I understand they are now under new ownership so it it's probably not the original JP McHale people making the changes Wish the original owners were still there as i had been very happy with their service and results read more

This family owned business sold their company recently. Based upon the service I got today, I dont think customers can come to expect the service they had received in the past. Maybe I just got a bad apple technician. Extremely disappointed. No guidance given in explaining/educating me about preventative measures I might take to ward off critters.
