Moved down to San Marcos in April. Been wandering around looking pretty shaggy as I get settled and try to find services to replicate what I had before. Obviously, a barber is high on the list. And I've been searching to find someone who I could see. Appointments are important to me as I don't want to get to a shop and wait 30 minutes because I picked a busy time. JR takes appointments and has a great website for scheduling your time and the type of cut (and or shave or both) that you want. I made a morning appointment and was seeing on time. Great cut and seems like a great guy. We covered a variety of topics in our 45 minutes together. I will certainly sign up with JR again. Thanks for a great cut. read more

I want to start saying that JR is an excellent barber and I wish he respected my time. Today was the third time in a row that I booked an appointment on his website and he was still 25 to 30 minutes late. I purposely book my appointment in the middle of the day so it's not busy and I can get in and out, unfortunately that's not the case. Today was the 3rd time not being available when he said he would be. I set up a time for 1:45 PM, left work early to get there, and he has somebody sitting in his chair. OK, not a huge deal, however at the 25 minute mark and the third time he combs the kids hair I had enough. I guess tipping $15-$20 on a $50 haircut isn't enough to have somebody respect your time. read more

After looking through the many barber shops San Marcos has to offer, JRs stood out the most so we ended up being a walk in one day (not knowing we had just found our new barbershop). Since he has a mullet he's VERY particular in who cuts his hair. After getting his hair cut from Christy, he now drives over an hour every few weeks or so back to JR's bc Christy cuts his mullet so spot on! Not only is she extremely accommodating in her scheduling, BUT she also captures the vision you want in your cut to make you love your haircut! Awesome local spot with a bit of an old school vibe. Booked my appointment on the cut app the day before. No issues getting an appointment. Jamezkutz was my barber of choice since he listed beard trims as part of his services offered. Showed up and was welcomed by the owner Jr. Waited a bit past my appointment time but I wasn't in a rush and with all of the extra pre cautions with Covid.... it seemed reasonable. Got in the chair and Jamez was awesome. Told him what I wanted ( low taper fade) , showed him a couple of pictures and off to work he went. You can tell he loves what he does based on the time he takes ( in a good way) and how he chats with the customers. I will 100% be back when it's time for my next cut. read more

I just came across the shop on yelp I needed to get a beard trim and I must say it was probably one of the most meticulous and incredible effort Mark put into the job. The last few places I've been to even with high ratings on yelp have been definite disappointments. The vibe in the shop is super chill and they had five guys working so you'll get in and out quickly. He even went above and beyond to do a neck shave in addition to the beard. My teen son was very pleased with his hair cut with Vince today. I called in the morning and Vince was able to squeeze him in. My husband said the shop was very clean. My son said Vince was nice and cut his hair like he asked. The big smile said it all! I discovered this shop by chance, and I am very happy I did. While I did not have an appointment, the barber that fixed my mane was phenomenal. She took her time and was very meticulous with my cut, even after someone else walked in and waited for a cut. Usually my boyfriend loves coming here all the time because he says it's one of the best places in town. For the first time ever, they messed up the simplest haircut ever ... a lower taper. One he didn't listen to anything he was saying and two he has the nerve to say speak up, while my boyfriend repeatedly told him many times .. LOWER TAPER. NO GEL. I'm not sure if the guy was new or just wanted to rush out to get home because of closing time, but this is the worst hair cut of a lifetime. Very disappointed that someone who doesn't know what a lower taper is would even cut hair. No longer will be coming here for hair cuts. Now time to wait months for this hair to grow back out. I usually don't write Yelp reviews, but I was pretty disappointed with my experience here -- which, considering the high yelp review, was a surprise to me. I made an appointment over the phone and the whole conversation was awkward. Showed up and the haircut started right away. Realized halfway into the cut that its cash only (its 2017 guys, get a square card reader, its free) BUT there was an ATM so I figured I was ok. Cut is finished and it wasn't that good, but I was in a bit of a rush so I just wanted to pay and get out. Come to find out, as I'm trying to use the ATM, that there is a $6 EXTRA FEE FOR APPOINTMENTS. What in the world?! That doesn't make any sense at all! Then I realized the ATM is broken. And the nearest one is across the street during rush hour. So about 10 minutes later I come back and pay way too much money for a mediocre-at-best haircut. Never coming here again. read more

Fletch The Barber is amazing! I have never actually taking the time to go to a barbershop but after the first time going into JR's I absolutely refuse to cut my own beard any longer! This place is awesome and will definitely make you feel and look great! The shop is great but I go back for Fletch! He is very nice and extremely easy to talk to you. He takes the extra time, goes the extra mile and make sure that you're looking sharp. I enjoy being able to be treated like a client instead of just your typical customer! I've been going to this shop for a couple of years now cant recommend it enough. The environment and hospitality are only matched by the professionalism and talent of all the barbers in the shop. I personally get my haircut with David, however, i have gotten my haircut by Jimmy, Alex and JR as well. I have never had any issues with a cut from any of these guys and i genuinely believe it is because they hold themselves to a certain standard. Like any good barbershop there may be a wait, sometimes it may be longer than others, however the quality of cut is well worth the wait. There are also two TV's(usually with some type of sporting event of movie on) to keep you entertained while you wait. Also if there is a long wait you can sign in and leave and these guys will hold your spot as long as you've signed in. David has also been very gracious with his time by coming in before the shop opens (at 9am) and after it closes (5pm) just to make sure i can get my cut. This has been the most reliable shop i have ever gone too and wont go anywhere else. Check it out! You will NOT regret it! read more

Edit: After having a bad experience and writing a yelp review, Jr (the owner) reached out to me. He apologized for the experience I had and said he would personally take care of me. Fist off, I thought that, in itself, was super professional and it was nice to know that your complaint was listened to and considered. Anyway since my first experience here, I've been to this place maybe close to 10 times. Not gonna lie, I've walked away from this place sometimes utterly impressed, sometimes mildly disappointed and annoyed, and sometimes even happy. Idk about you, but for me that was HUGE. For the majority of my life, I've been disappointed with my haircuts and I often walk away feeling like I could've done a better job cutting my hair myself. So an improvement over that was great. Out of all the times I've been here, I want to share with you the one that left the most memorable impression. It was the second time I went to Jr's. The second time I came in, I made sure to have Jr cut my hair. He didn't even know that I was the one that wrote the bad yelp review before, but he treated me with so much respect and he was so methodical and careful in the way he cut my hair. He really took his time with me and in doing so, I didn't feel like just a client; I felt like he ACTUALLY cared about how I looked. When Jr took care of me that time, I expressed to him how I didn't really know what to do with my hair. I hinted to him how I usually walk away disappointed with haircuts and how I wasn't sure what look best fit my face. You know what Jr did? He freaking paused for a bit. He looked at me and I could tell he was trying to envision how I could look SO that I could walk away happy with myself. Walk away fresh-- Damn dude. So much respect right off the bat. I was impressed. Anyway Jr gave me his thoughts about what he thought would look best. After giving him the okay, he went and bought himself a shake or some drink (because he knew the cut would take a while) and then he started at it. Dude, he probably spent close to an hour or 1.5 hrs on my cut. He didn't rush himself. He was careful with his blade. He was careful with his clippers. He worked his art. The experience was refreshing. I personally didn't think the cut fit my face but the cut was clean. No doubt about that. This isn't just a job for Jr. This is his art. read more

No sign-in sheet = time wasted. Came here for a haircut, place was packed - no problem. 4.5 stars, I'll wait for a good haircut. Flash forward 30 mins - there is no sign-in sheet. Therefore, 3 customers, including myself, were denied service due to a-holes who simply jumped into the seat as soon as a barber muttered, rather quietly, "next." Seriously people came in, seeing others were waiting (as I said the place was packed), and just snatched up the spot. No consideration. And honestly, I'm not sure I can blame them - how do they know who is waiting for a haircut and who is just waiting for a friend? Both of the other customers who got cut in line for service left, and then I did shortly after. It shouldn't be the customer's job to call out other customers who are out of line, nor should it be their job to keep track of the clients. We aren't getting paid for this shit. I get it. You want to stand out. You want to have a cool barber shop. Maybe not having a sign-in sheet sounded great in your head. Maybe you thought it would make the place more of a community. But all that you end up getting are mad customers who just came in for a haircut (and would like to support a local small business instead of a mcbarbershop) but end up having to do your job and confront other customers for service. Hell, you could even just keep track yourselves in your head. When people enter, ask for their name and then call out people when you are ready, if what you really want is a community vibe. read more

I personally don't get my cut here because I shave my head but I've been bringing my 2 boys (10 and 8 now) here for about 2 1/2 years now and they are always happy with their cuts. One of the main reasons we keep coming back is because my youngest boy has autism and gets a little concerned when the clippers are around his ears but amazingly he has never had an issue with JR or his staff, they have always been nice and courteous to him. To anyone with a special needs child, you'll probably understand how important something like this can be. Prior to finding JR's I used to take them to another shop in Vista but we stopped going there because sometimes the conversations would get too out of hand for kids to be around, that's not the case at JR's. Sure the guys joke around but the conversations center mostly around sports. About the only downside to the shop is the wait time but I can't bring myself to take a star away because the reason there is such a long wait time is that they are just that good and they do get a lot of business. The guys here are awesome and I would highly recommend that you give them a shot, I'm sure you'll leave looking sharp and with a good experience. read more
