First off, I need to say that I wanted to take a star off for service after walking in on a Friday night and having to wait 40 minutes for my order. After eating my long anticipated meal though, I thought better of it, realized that they were insanely busy, and that good food is worth waiting for. And it was indeed worth the wait! Next time I'll definitely take J's advice and phone my order in, then come and pick it up later. Even with the place as busy as it was; and even though I had gotten a little cranky after my wait, the staff remained friendly, accommodating, and kept working up a storm. I'm not sure who was cooking the fish and chips in the back, but they must have been going full tilt, and J and his helper were quickly and efficiently taking orders in person and by phone, packing stuff to go, serving in house customers, and even cooking burgers at the counter for those who ordered them. And in all of it, J still made sure to give every person a nice comment, a thank you for coming, etc. Now for the food: To put it simply; it was AMAZING. Juicy, tender fish, light batter, freshly made thick cut fries, and all piping hot still by the time I got home with it. All for an amazing price. I'm not much of a fish snob, so I just went with the haddock, and for $6 for a nice piece of fish and more fries than I expected, who could complain? They also offered many other specials, including a $9 halibut and chips, a $6 burger combo, etc. This was some of the best fish and chips I've had. None of that greasy "it feels like someone painted the roof of my mouth with lard" feeling during or after eating. I will DEFINITELY be going back

Was in the area and saw this restaurant. The food is great, not too much batter on the fish and they give you a tray with ketchup, vinegar, mayo, coleslaw, and salt. The tray is neatly organized showing their attention to detail. The owner comes and asks if I needed anything. Very good service. Price is very good as well, I got their $8 lunch special. Very decent portions.

Good service. Halibut is good, fries could do a bit less brown, too dry if over fried

What a lovely local business!…read more Family owned and cute spot with great service. We came in for dinner and were not disappointed. Ordered the fish and chips obviously - one haddock and one cod. Upgraded my side to their chowder and we got a side of mushy peas. I have absolutely no complaints because i think they do it right. Chips are fresh cut fries and the fish is battered well- not oily and super crispy. We got to chat with our waitress who told us they're pretty particular with the fish they bring into the store and after eating it i believe it. We also had some leftover to take home. I need to try the Orange roughy one of these days when they have it in, because it's not everyday you see that as an option. Would definitely recommend checking this place out!

But after so many times doing takeout it only happened once, so not bad at all. Halibut: 4.75/5 crispy and then soft inside. Yum. Sometimes could be a little more tender but most times we have ordered it was perfect. Chowder: 6/5 So good. So much flavour. Mushy peas: 7/5 How do they make it like that?! Never will peas taste that good. Chips: 5/5 Great chips! And excellent gravy to accompany. Onion rings: 4.5/5 Pretty good! Sometimes the batter is a little consistent but they are good overall. Highly recommend!

Tip: There's a tip jar at the counter…read more A recent Yelp elite experience introduced me to The Big Catch in Newmarket. It recently opened a store in Markham, which I look forward to visiting. I have been to this plaza a few times over the years. I've been to the Tim Hortons a handful of times. I was at Mom's Pan-fried Buns a few months ago, which is a couple of businesses down from The Big Catch. This plaza has lots of parking. I pulled into a parking spot and walked in. I was immediately greeted by a friendly, efficient woman. I got halibut and chips as my main meal. I paid for a can of Diet Coke with a credit card. Tap. Done! I found a table. I caught up with some photos on my phone. It didn't take long for my food to arrive. I had to ask for my Diet Coke. She was running the entire fry-seating show, so I was patient. I finally got my drink. Yay! The halibut was a decent portion. I got a lot of fries. My meal came with a lemon slice and tartar sauce. There was also a bottle of ketchup on the table. I loved the halibut. The batter was light and crispy. The fish was flaky and yummy. I loved dunking my halibut in the tartar sauce that tasted homemade. The fries were good. Just too many of them for my liking. I dunked them in both ketchup and tartar sauce. My Diet Coke helped wash everything down. Thank goodness I got one. It was cold. I got a straw. The woman was great. She asked how my meal was while I was dining. It was a nice touch. I had to use the washroom twice. I came into the eatery after driving for 1.5 hours from Mississauga and downing a beverage. It's a single stall for everyone. It was clean, but dated. I used it again before I headed home. It's funny that I had washroom in mind when I got here that I completely forgot to grab some change to leave a tip. I went back to my car to get some, came back into the eatery, and let the woman know that I was back to give a tip. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I'd return again when I'm back in this plaza and have a craving for halibut. (373)

If you dine-in they bring the food at your table and clean up after you. Staff is very nice and patient despite it being busy. Prices are pretty standard to what it is now. Roughly $20 after tax. Got the chicken fingers for the kids with $4 extra for poutine. The poutine gravy was very salty though. Can't eat the whole thing. They also offer rolled ice cream with 3 free toppings for about $10. I would come here again if I'm in the area. Rating 3.5/5

Portions are generous and the coleslaw and fries are amazing and complete the fish so well. I can eat just a plateful of their fries. Service is great, all the servers are so incredibly nice and friendly. It is always packed at lunch & dinner. Def a local favourite because everyone there knows each other. We tried the haddock, halibut and breaded shrimp! I wish I could have shared more photos, but when the plates are brought to the table I can't resist digging in right away! The menu options are great where you can get 3 pieces of haddock or halibut with 2 orders of fries. Lots of parking and plenty of seating inside. Takeout orders are 5% off. The menu is great with so many options! We first tried Joy's 6 weeks ago - we have been back almost every week since our first visit. When it's time to pay they give you a scratch card with your receipt - everyone is a winner. To redeem the card, spend $35 on your next visit for the free item. Some of the items you can scratch and win are , haddock & fries, halibut & fries, Joys feast special, large plate of fries. I'm sure there are more as these are just the items we have won. Options for fish and chips are very limited in Markham, so I love the option of visiting Stouffville nearby for Joy's Fish & Chips. Until next time...

I ordered 2 of their specials (Haddock and chips including a pop) for $12.50 + tax each. I was a little hesitant about the haddock being fishy? And was debating on paying more and getting their halibut. I was worried sick all the way home. But Upon eating the haddock, I was truly genuinely surprised at how good it was. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between this and halibut which is saying a lot about fish and chips. When my food was done, I saw the cook ( a lady ) and it was the same one from my previous visits a long time ago. Oh boy, I hope they don't change as the lady cook is a keeper! I know that this place was up for sale a while back and that is why I was hesitant to come here recently. But, after seeing that the cook is the same, I will be sure to make a few more visits and into my regular rotation of take out food. To all the yelpers out there. This is by far the best haddock I've tried and is comparable to halibut at a portion of the price. It's an easy recommendation.
