Tip: There's a tip jar at the counter. A recent Yelp elite experience introduced me to The Big Catch in Newmarket. It recently opened a store in Markham, which I look forward to visiting. I have been to this plaza a few times over the years. I've been to the Tim Hortons a handful of times. I was at Mom's Pan-fried Buns a few months ago, which is a couple of businesses down from The Big Catch. This plaza has lots of parking. I pulled into a parking spot and walked in. I was immediately greeted by a friendly, efficient woman. I got halibut and chips as my main meal. I paid for a can of Diet Coke with a credit card. Tap. Done! I found a table. I caught up with some photos on my phone. It didn't take long for my food to arrive. I had to ask for my Diet Coke. She was running the entire fry-seating show, so I was patient. I finally got my drink. Yay! The halibut was a decent portion. I got a lot of fries. My meal came with a lemon slice and tartar sauce. There was also a bottle of ketchup on the table. I loved the halibut. The batter was light and crispy. The fish was flaky and yummy. I loved dunking my halibut in the tartar sauce that tasted homemade. The fries were good. Just too many of them for my liking. I dunked them in both ketchup and tartar sauce. My Diet Coke helped wash everything down. Thank goodness I got one. It was cold. I got a straw. The woman was great. She asked how my meal was while I was dining. It was a nice touch. I had to use the washroom twice. I came into the eatery after driving for 1.5 hours from Mississauga and downing a beverage. It's a single stall for everyone. It was clean, but dated. I used it again before I headed home. It's funny that I had washroom in mind when I got here that I completely forgot to grab some change to leave a tip. I went back to my car to get some, came back into the eatery, and let the woman know that I was back to give a tip. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Came here for lunch with my kids. They have lots of 4-seater table and one larger 6-seater available. You order right at the counter for either take out or din-in. If you dine-in they bring the food at your table and clean up after you. Staff is very nice and patient despite it being busy. Prices are pretty standard to what it is now. Roughly $20 after tax. Got the chicken fingers for the kids with $4 extra for poutine. The poutine gravy was very salty though. Can't eat the whole thing. Nice local fish and chips spot with plenty of dine-in seating. We tried both the haddock and halibut with chips. The fish was flaky and nicely fried, with a light, crispy batter. The fries were delicious as well! I personally preferred the haddock over the halibut, but both were really well done. A couple more of months ago I had the burger with onion rings one of the best burgers and onion rings I have ever had in my life you could tell the dish was made perfect with the patty being perfectly cooked and well done, not one part of this meal had a problem. The service was amazing especially the female waitress that was working there she was really nice and fun and amazing with our family. The place itself was great and super clean especially the washrooms that were perfect with not even a speck of dirt or and kind of disgust which is really rare to find in a restaurant. They play kid friendly and Tv-14 shows and movies on the television which is amazing. Thank you for being one of my favourite places to go. read more

Went with the kids. Ordered the fish and chips for the wife and I. Kids had chicken fingers (my daughter ), and a bacon cheeseburger combo (my son). The portions were OK. I would have liked more fries as they tasted very yummy. The fish was delicious and I would have preferred slightly larger portions of this too but I understand that the cost of halibut has gone through the roof. The Cost is $14.99 for fish and chips and 15.99 for fish with a salad, (wife had Greek salad). The bacon cheeseburger my son said was yummy as well. I would highly recommend them to anybody who is in the area of Newmarket. They are very friendly and really work hard to make their guests feel welcome and appreciated. I love fish and chips and recently moved to Newmarket so was excited to try the big catch. I got more excited when I found out they had a deal that includes 2 pieces of fish. Wasn't I disappointed when I got home and readied that 2 pieces of fish was actually only 1 piece cut in half. Life seriously? I ordered halibut and the fish was ok but very dry and tasted fishy. We love this place. Often coming twice a month. We enjoy the Haddock, Halibut and especially when they have the Cod (special item). The coleslaw is delicious and the fries are crisp. This used to be my families GO-TO place for fish and chips. Unfortunately that has changed. This place came under new management a couple years back. They are always friendly and like to chat you up! Which is very refreshing to see! The fish is is great but the chips...terrible. I don't know if they are using oil from all week or what but they always come out dry and stale. Although they do give you big portions and you won't leave hungry. I do love their fish and coleslaw...I will not be back for a while. The whole chips situation has really got my family reconsidering this place. Although that is our personal opinion, others might find the chips fine. There is no reason to give this place any bad reviews in my eyes. They are simply great! I might come back in the future to try out the chips again. Who knows, they might get better. read more

Although I do find the food good here, the service is absolutely horrible. I asked for extra tartar sauce with my meal and the cashier was extremely rude with me. She told me that she's going to just give me 2 and that I have to be ok with it. I was appalled at how she spoke to me and how rude she was. I specifically asked yesterday if the tartar sauce was made in house, the lady said yes. I come home to find just 2 plastic packets of tartar sauce. 1. why don't they make their own. 2. why do they lie about it. 3. why do I only get 2 packets of the cheap packets? the food was good, but I'm not a fan of being lied to. I thought I'd try something different tonight and go with fish and chips. The restaurant is clean and friendly. I ordered the two piece halibut and chips with a side of coleslaw to go, I think the bill was ~$13. The fish was ok but small portions, I received a small container of cheese curds instead of coleslaw so I can't comment on that, and the most disappointing thing was the bland chips. The chips were a thick cut and in no way crispy or anything to brag about. The tartar sauce was from a packet and I got vinegar included but no salt. Overall a very mediocre meal that was not enough for me to come back for more. $13 can be spent better somewhere else. read more

Fish and chips were very brown like oil hadn't been changed in awhile. My 4 year old even refused to eat because it looked funny. Not a dedicated fish and chips restaurant, oil is used to fry many things so not that clean taste of a old school dedicated place. read more

I can not even express my feelings towards this place. I have ate at this restaurant multiple times because I personally love fish and chips and it is the only place near me. Every single time I walk in, I hope it can redeem itself but it does not. It is run by a husband and a wife, and the amount of times the wife has walked up to me and touched my face with her greasy hands saying "sweetie, how is the food?" It drives me insane. I have never seen them wash their hands once but what I did see was the wife never washing the ketchup bottles and putting in ketchup in from a bucket, but wait there's more! She sometimes spills it on the side and scoops it right back up with her...HANDS. I found flies in the vinegar bottle which I brought to her attention, although I doubt she did anything about it. The gravy is not real gravy...it's powder, and they charge 2 dollars extra for it. I have witnessed the husband and wife both touch my food with their bare hands and put my fries and fish in the box, nobody wears a hairnet and there's a little bit of sprite in the cup of ice that the they hand to me. read more

Fish was good but not as good as the old owners made it. Fries are actually really bad. Coleslaw is average. I won't go back.

This place is totally recommended if you're a fan of French fries, fish and chips and poutein. Their French fries are crispy, delicious and big in each of them, pouteins are even more delicious with the sauce and cheese. I haven't tried their fish and chips yet but rumours said it's great! The only thing I didn't like about this place is that it is overly priced, high schoolers couldn't afford it for their lunch most of the time. read more

Called in my take out order Thurs-before good Fri - to ensure order of Haddock was taken. They said to pick it up before 3 on Fri. I called then at 2:30 Fri and said My husband was on his way to pick up the order . She said it would be ready and hung up on me. My husband got there and was told the order wasn't ready and they had ran out of Haddock- Had to buy the other more expensive fish and wait for it.
