What a lovely local business! Family owned and cute spot with great service. We came in for dinner and were not disappointed. Ordered the fish and chips obviously - one haddock and one cod. Upgraded my side to their chowder and we got a side of mushy peas. I have absolutely no complaints because i think they do it right. Chips are fresh cut fries and the fish is battered well- not oily and super crispy. We got to chat with our waitress who told us they're pretty particular with the fish they bring into the store and after eating it i believe it. We also had some leftover to take home. I need to try the Orange roughy one of these days when they have it in, because it's not everyday you see that as an option. Would definitely recommend checking this place out! read more

This is our go to fish and chips place. We get takeout a lot. Our older son loves loves everything. Only on one occasion did I find a bone in the fish. But after so many times doing takeout it only happened once, so not bad at all. Halibut: 4.75/5 crispy and then soft inside. Yum. Sometimes could be a little more tender but most times we have ordered it was perfect. Chowder: 6/5 So good. So much flavour. Mushy peas: 7/5 How do they make it like that?! Never will peas taste that good. Chips: 5/5 Great chips! And excellent gravy to accompany. Onion rings: 4.5/5 Pretty good! Sometimes the batter is a little consistent but they are good overall. Finding a good fish & chips spot can be tricky at times when you think about balancing price, portion size, the batter, and the chips. This spot did a pretty good job overall. The batter wasn't too thick, greasy, or salty, and the fish filet was thick enough that it retained its structure when eating (instead of becoming a flaky mess). Chips were decent, but not the standout for me. Even their seniors portion size of fish & chips is quite filling. I also really enjoyed the seafood chowder, though it was on the saltier side. Shocked at how large the bowl of chowder was for the price, and they did not skimp out on the ingredients. No one wants a chowder that's 80% roux/cream base and 20% veggies with canned or frozen seafood mixed in. It was a long journey to get there today as there is a winter festival going on in Newmarket on Main street and it's temporarily closed so we had to walk a little to get there. Good news it was worth the trek to get there. The restaurant was humming but we were directed to a nice booth by a lovely and most accommodating waitress. We ordered a beer and our meals. The beer came over in good time as did our lunch. The beer was frosty and our meals were delivered hot and plentiful. I had the shrimp and chips which were enormous and succulent and my friend had the cod and chips that as I was told were flaky and delicious. Another great meal here ! My go to place for fish and chips in Newmarket. The halibut is exquisite, thick and juicy and a solid white fish (so firm is the halibut). Ordered the family pack 4 pieces halibut, 2 fresh cut fries, 4 coleslaw and 4 tartar. Enough said about the halibut, Exquisite! Fries are great, nice homemade freshly cut, coleslaw is creamy and the tartar is homemade, not the Heinz's packages. As well tartar should be at any fish and chip establishment. The best fish and chips!! This cute restaurant on Main Street in Newmarket is an absolute gem! The restaurant is very nicely decorated, it seems small when you walk in but it has a long hallway and back area with more seating. The menu is not large but has a bunch of great option for both seafood lovers and those who would prefer a burger. As per the many other reviews, the fish is the star of the show. I had the haddock and it was a massive piece that hung over the side of the plate. I upgraded my fries to the seafood chowder which I loved. It was creamy, with lots of pieces of seafood but wasn't overly heavy. I really enjoyed it! The fish was light and flaky and the batter was crisp. I didn't find it to be overly greasy, however it is still fried food. The fish tasted fresh and it came out piping hot. Everyone enjoyed their fish. I tried the fries and they were also great. They tasted like fresh cut, not frozen. The only issue I have is with the price, it's a good couple of bucks more expensive than many other fish and chips places in the area, most with very good quality food as well. The restaurant offers a very nice atmosphere and great service so I think that makes up for it a little! The service was good, a bit slow at times but it was not an issue because we were enjoying our time there. They servers were very friendly and made us feel like we were regulars. My husband and I drove all the way from Texas to Toronto to eat at Chip+Malt!!! Ok just kidding. Seriously though, we did drive to Canada but to stay with family for the holidays and this was the one restaurant we just had to come visit in New Market. We not only enjoyed eating the delicious food but the customer service is so friendly and welcoming. We got to meet with the owner who was also very pleasant and we enjoyed our conversation. I was craving fish and chips and decided to give this place a try based on the reviews. When we got here, we had a hard time finding parking. Every spot in the parking lots in the area were occupied. Eventually, we found a 30 minute spot by the restaurant and took it. We didn't realize it was table service until we walked in and I got worried about our 30 minute parking. I told the hostess that we were parked at a 30 minute spot and would it be ok. She said that it's ok and she doubted that we would get ticketed because they don't think the cops would give tickets in this freezing weather. LOL. We were immediately seated after arriving. Daughter ordered Haddock and Chips, which has Atlantic haddock, chips, coleslaw, tartar sauce. She substituted the chips for chips and curds for an extra cost. The chips and curds were fresh cut chips, house made gravy and Quebec cheese curds. She thought that the haddock was ok. We thought that the chips and curds were a bit of a disappointment. The chips could've have used a little more time in the fryer. They looked to be freshly cut, though. Hubs ordered the Seafood Chowder, which has halibut, cod, bacon, potatoes and cream. Hubs thought it was the best item on the table that day. He doesn't like it thick and glad that it wasn't. He also liked that there wasn't much potatoes and a lot of seafood. Lastly, I had the Cod'wich sandwich - battered cod, coleslaw, tomatoes, pickled red onions, tartar sauce. It's served on a Martin's potato roll. I thought it was ok and it was nice and thick and could use a little more salt. My order also came with a side of fries. The restaurant was generous with the chips. We brought both daughter's and my chips back to our hotel. We couldn't finish it. The fries weighed almost about 2 lbs. LOL. Daughter had English Breakfast and I had Earl Gray tea. We both had our little pots to brew our tea. It was nice and warm for a freezing cold day! Hubs had coffee and thought it was good strong tavern like coffee. Service was a little slow but friendly. They have the largest selection of fish I've seen at a fish & chips shop: cod, haddock, pollock, halibut and orange roughy. There's also a halloumi cheese option for the vegetarians. The cod was fresh enough & the batter was light & crispy. The chips were crispier than at other fish & chip places - authenticity isn't always a good thing for food, since British chips tend to be soggy! The fried stuff was served with a lot of tartar sauce & it had a creamy nice tang. It was also served in a cardboard box, not wrapped in (news)paper. The calamari, as others have noted, felt kind of rubbery. It may be pre-frozen. Service was excellent. Very friendly and warm. Loved the quality of the food and cleanliness of the restaurant ( went inside to use the restroom). I should mention the greens of the Ceasar were crispy and fresh. Although the dressing was a little too mayonnaisey. More anchovy flavour would have been nice as well as softened croutons ( they were too tough). I love to support locals, especially when it's a gem I recently discovered Chip & Malt which is known for their fish and chips. They focus on using ethically sourced, and fresh local ingredients for their dishes. I ordered the Halibut + Chips and was surprised about the size, as well as how tender and juicy the piece was as well. It's really what you get; a piece of fish covered in crispy batter without any added salt & spices to it. The extra flavoring would come from the in-house tartar sauce which is included in your order. Personally I enjoyed it as is since I really wanted to experience the taste of the perfectly cooked Halibut. Lastly I didn't feel too greasy eating it as their batter wasn't oily at all. Deep fried fish and fries. Pretty hard to screw up, but so many other do! My order of Halibut had an impossibly crispy batter, with screaming hot but still moist halibut inside. The homemade tartar sauce is also not as common as I thought. I came here with a couple of my employees, one from England. He confirmed that this was as British as you can get. Although the fries were homemade and plentiful, they were very dry and difficult to eat no matter how much malt I put on top. Further, the coleslaw was lacking flavour. Today's lunch was brought to us by Chip+Malt! This place was recommended by friends so I thought I would check it out. The place is right on Main St. Plenty of parking in the rear down the alley. The interior has a great vibe. Nice benches along one side with more seating in the back. I went for the Classic Halibut and Chips. It came with a piece of Halibut, a mountain of fries, side of coleslaw and tartar sauce. Don't let the size of the piece of fish fool you. It was a nice portion. It was super thick. The batter was very crispy and wasn't greasy at all. The fish was super fresh and nice and flaky! Cooked to perfection! The fries are fresh cut and cooked golden brown. They were crisp and nice and fluffy on the inside. The coleslaw was the creamy type and was nice and refreshing. The cabbage was nice and crispy and it was a perfect side to the meal. It was great to see that the tartar sauce was homemade. A perfect dip for the flaky fish! I was stuffed at the end but made room for a deep fried Mars Bar with a side of in house made Vanilla ice cream. The mars bar was coated in batter and deep fried to a golden brown. Wow. On a lovely Saturday evening, my friend had suggested we go get some fish and chips before heading to see a flick. At about 6:30 we were told we were facing about a 15-20 minute wait. We could tell right off the bat how popular Chip and Malt is. At the Cache event Kris had told us they actually imported special frying/cooking equipment from the U.K. for a authentic fish 'n chip experience. From the sleek and clean design, with intimate booths stretched end to end and the kitchen off to the side, you can sense a true pride of ownership. We decided in the original haddock and fish, with a pint of Guinness as out beverage of choice.served with a generous side of coleslaw and target sauce and 'chips,' we knew we wouldnt leave hungry. The fish itself was moist, meaty and was the star of the plate. In other words, it was not buried in an oily batter you would commonly see in other restaurants. You can tell this is the stuff, homemade, fresh to order, and a true U.K. experience. Hence, the line ups for days out the door. The servers were enthusiastic and helpful, with a bit of a hiccup with paying the bill near the end (we knew you were busy guys!). I'm not quite ready to anoint Chip+Malt as the best fish and chips in the GTA just yet like some of the fellow Yelpers; let me tell you why. I did get takeout (I have no other options these days) and have to drive thirty minutes to get home in order to dig into the fish and chips. With deep fried food, how soon you eat it after it comes out from the fryer certainly matters. The batter alone gives Chip+Malt the potential to be considered one of the best. The batter was thin, light, buttery and crispy (I got a halibut which stayed crispy despite sitting in the box for thirty minutes but the roughy was getting soft). However here's where the marks were deducted - the batter lacked the necessary salt so if you don't add salt to the fish (which they did not suggest to me to do so) the deep fried fish would taste very bland if you do not dip it into the tartar sauce. When eaten in this manner the halibut was plain bland but the roughy was ok due to the fish having more of a natural seafood sweetness. From a taste standpoint the roughy would be my preference. Another aspect that lost points for them was the timing of the deep frying. While the batter was a nice golden colour, both fishes were overcooked to some degree. The halibut was only slightly overcooked which I can look past, but the roughy, which I understand is a coarser and meatier fish was quite overcooked. The texture criteria is a win for the halibut. But generally a flaw. There's always brownie points for fish and chips places that make their own tartar sauce which they do here at Chips+Malt. The tartar sauce I would say is solid but not great. The base of the sauce is too salty and I much prefer slightly more sourness and tang to it. You may say that since the fish is bland but the sauce is salty it is more than enough to compensate for it. But unfortunately it doesn't work that way and a bit of salt goes a long way to bring out the taste of seafood. The fries however managed to help them gain back some points. The choice of potato was great with a good subtle sweetness to it. I wouldn't necessarily drive all the way to Newmarket to eat it but if you happen to be in the area, Chip+Malt is certain worth a try. read more

The service is super friendly. Where else can I get a Haddock with Chips for $10.99?! The fish is fresh. The batter is light and crispy. The fries is crispy golden. Sticky Toffee Pudding ($6.99) with Guinness Ice Cream ($1) - Rich and heavenly. More a brownie texture. Sadly Yorkshire Pudding not ready for lunch. I have to come back during dinner. Roughy is really juicy and fatty. Halibut was a bit dry, but the batter was still excellent. Portions! Holy cow it's big. But very satisfying. Coleslaw--yum! Tar Tar sauce: I prefer a tangy-er tar tar sauce so this one is a bit mild--still good but would have preferred more relish flavours poppin through in the sauce. Seafood Chowder: creamy, but felt like the soup and the ingredients were made separately and combined together when ordered. In other words, separately the broth and ingredients taste good, but feels like they didn't have time to jam together in a bubbling pot of happiness. Would we come back? ================= Yes! Tonight, we finally decided to go for a fish n chips evening at Chip+Malt restaurant located on Main street, Newmarket. While waiting to be seated, one could see how busy the restaurant was! Very good ambience, and the owner was very friendly and welcoming! The menu had lot of options, but we tried the dinner portions for the following fish options: - Halibut - Orange Roughy Both came with coleslaw, and fries. Personally, i loved orange roughy, a white fish from NZ, but relatively more moist than Halibut. The portion was gracious, and, fish tasted delicious Also ordered english onion soup ( was very delicious). My favourite is seafood clam chowder that i go for starters but could not order ( what a shame), as it had bacon. I suggest that they should have the non bacon option as well for those who have such dietary restrictions! For dessert, we ordered the potted triple chocolate trifle. Liked the presentation. It had fresh whip cream with chocolate chunks sprinkled on it. Underneath the whip cream, there was yummy choc brownie layer, followed by decadent smooth milk chocolate. Recently heard about Chip+Malt from one of my clients and decided to drive up to Newmarket for a feast! Wait time wasn't too long for a table on Friday night. It looks like a small shop from the front, but there are plenty of booths as you walk further inside. My client did rave about the Seafood Chowder, so the hubby and I shared one as our starter. It was 2 ladles full of delicious, chunky and hearty ingredients! However, it was a bit too buttery for my liking but hubby loved it and devoured the rest of the bowl lol. We ordered 2 fish and chips combo. The Orange Roughy fish was flaky and soft, while the Halibut was firm but tender. Both are very delicious with a light, crispy batter. We upgraded one side of chips to a poutine (+$2.99). I must say, the poutine was quite heavenly - freshly cut potatoes, creamy gravy, and melty cheese curds - you have to try this :D Each combo also came with a side of coleslaw and a nice cream of tartar sauce. If you think this is too much food for you (FYI, it is A LOT of fries!), you have the option to just order one piece of fish instead of the combo Make sure you save room for dessert! We ended the night with a Sticky Toffee Pudding and a housemade Guinness ice cream! The pudding was so good that hubby could not even respond for a good 5 minutes when I continued to ask him how it was lol. Personally, I really enjoyed the Guinness ice cream. We were attending an event in Aurora, and of course after the event had to check yelp out to see what hidden gems are in the area. so glad we were able to find this fish and chip joint, on the main street of newmarket, plenty of free parking (follow the green p's) the restaurant looks very nice and cozy upon entrance, we came around 1pm on a Saturday. We were quickly seated. The menu has a lot of choices, burgers, greens, fish cakes.. etc. but of course I wanted to try their fish and chips. They lost a star because it took them almost 20 minutes to acknowledge us and take our order or even get waters. I ordered haddock and chips, my husband ordered halibut and chips. The food didn't take too long to come, and were huge portions. The coleslaw that came with the meal was in a good size dish, and so fresh and crunchy! the tartar sauce was missing that zing for me, it needed more vinegar, it just tasted like mayo for me. Their fries (a lot in an order) were nicely fresh cut, good size, but definitely needed ketchup for dipping otherwise it felt a little dry. The fish was definitely the star. the halibut was nice and flakey and moist. The haddock was also flakey, and was a big long filet. The batter was light and crispy, even after squeezing lemon onto the fish that didn't make the fish soggy! it wasn't oily either. Halibut + Orange Roughy & Chips The portions were HUGE! Definitely worth the price of $16 each. The halibut was flakey and cooked perfectly, it was delicious. Now I had the catch of the day : orange roughy (which I've never had in my life) it was described as a cross between halibut and haddock and it honestly was amazing. Honestly one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Fresh ingredients with well developed flavours in everything i ate. I visit family in the UK regularly and this is everything I wish British food was but they can't match the food quality of Ontario. I order the fish and chips with a seafood chowder and the toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The asked the waitress about the Orange Roughy fish featured and she said it was very mild so I went with it and was delighted! Not fishy at all but very fresh and meaty, almost like a fresh caught filet-o-fish lol. I also really enjoyed the chowder, had nice big chunks of fish and was well seasoned with chunks of fresh sweet corn and herbs, really quite excellent. The real jewel of the meal was the toffee pudding, probably the best I've ever had and it's all I get when I visit across the pond, so many layers of flavours built into the cake and a beautiful cook on it to have a nice crisp outside while being rich and moist inside, the ice cream is very rich and really pairs nicely, love the how the entire pallet is kind of washed over with the ice cream and changes the flavour of the cake, really a great experience and meal. Also have to note the waitress was very sweet and warm, gave great service and her recommendation on the fish was excellent, will definitely be back soon! If I had to say one negative it's a little bit pricey but honestly with the experience I had I think it's justified but all depends on if you love fish and chips like me! read more

The best fish and chips I've ever tried... Our family loves this joint! They asked us to join them when the patio first opened and the waitress that served us was UNBELIEVABLE I loved her so much. She was attentive, kind, funny, and made me want to come back for more. The owner was always great served all of us and asked if we were okay, if there were more stars to give I would give it to them. The food is impeccable portion sizes and amazing quality. You will not be disappointed! Not to mention they now have a patio due to covid. Very sanitary!
