I kindly requested that the person doing my hair (the Owner) put on a mask. I told him that my wife was pregnant and I didn't want to take any chances. He told me he was NOT going to put one on and that if that doesn't work for me he doesn't have to do my hair. He knew that I had plans tomorrow and he was trying to manipulate me. -0 In December of 2018, I went to J to start my (formerly known as Dreadlocks)I wanted loc extensions! J assured me that he was more than capable of completing the task! Over $1,000 later here I am in October of 2019 and I have locs falling out still! To find out underneath my locs there is braiding hair French braided and he just wrapped the Loc hair around the braid and GLUED THE ENDS!!! I was asked during the process did I want them all the same size and length. I answered yes!!! I have multiple sizes and lengths! He charged me extra for the length! Although from a distance my hair looks ok. My hair and appearance is very important to me and I have truly experienced depression over this botched job and the amount of money I spent! And like others have stated he was not timely for my appointment, he took an hour lunch break and I spent about 16 hours! We had to wait for his wife to bring more hair! -0 rating I was so excited about beginning my Loc journey after wanting them for over 20yrs and becoming comfortable enough with myself to give in to my want! J is THE MAN! Comfortable little hair studio on Arden- it's easy to overlook but definitely come on in if you are ready to go on your dreadlock journey. I scheduled a last minute appointment with them and was very grateful to get in! We confirmed the night before and everything was good. I show up the next day at my scheduled time and the door is locked. Nobody is anywhere to be found so I call and text. Mind you, anytime you call it goes straight to voicemail and they text back (first red flag). I get a text back 20 minutes later asking if we could push it back to 1.5 hours later, something came up. I politely declined. I had someone watching my child and was pretty upset that I got no heads up before I came out there (not from the area). I really try my best to support black owned businesses and keep getting burned. I will continue to do so, but we must do better! I've been meaning to write my review on them based on my session in early November. I had a previous dye for my birthday in September that didn't end up how I wanted, and needed the color redone for my engagement shoot. I couldn't get a date set for my previous stylist, and it was becoming frustrating for myself, myb fiancé, and photographer. I checked Yelp, and reached out to J's. The contact was quick and they had no issue answering ALL of my questions. Based on what I needed, they gave me a reasonable quote and the next day we set a date. The day of the appointment, they called me stating they would be arriving behind due a small miscommunication and wanted to reimburse me for the trouble. It was a good wait, but I had no issue that day. It's a smaller shop, but they made it comfortable watching stand up comedy and a good movie. We started the color and they informed me their sink was not prepared and we would need to use another in the building. They were embarrassed, but again I had no issue as long as the dye was washed out. After the washout, we realized my initial dye from September did not come out it only enhanced... Which I didn't want. They worked with me to get it out and get the color I wanted. The lift we used was powerful and mixed with what I had initially it came out gold. It was blonder than I wanted but it was a great color for me. My roots were a little "loud", but they offered to do a rinse out color the next week if I was not pleased. I told him I should be fine, as long as the roots faded... They did. He took photos for himself afterwards, and asked if I could send photos from our shoot. I had to reschedule my engagement shoot because I was so sick, but I told him I could do that. The fact that they were so quick and compassionate to the customers needs and comfort made this experience even better. I am very thankful for their work, and that they will be nearby when I move. I came in to start my dread journey and was very specific about what I wanted I asked for it to look neat and clean. I got the opposite. He was very distracted with other things and left me there to sit under a hair dryer for over an hour by myself. The place was filthy nasty there was trash everywhere. Im changing my review, ignore the compelled 1 star review. I give this business a negative 1 star rating. My frontal started to left less then a week. The main "sew in" row in the back of my hair was about 3" thick and bulking, so i rescheduled an appointment for a touch up repair job. Instead of writing an entire new review i copied and past the text that i sent to J. On 8/14/19 i do not recommend! Read below: Hey J I scheduled an appointment with you today at 3pm drove 40mins in traffic from elk grove, called, texted to confirm todays appointment and to let you know that i was on my way-- no response. When i got to the shop-- your wife said you were off work-- You didn't even have the decency respect, or consideration for your customer to at least respond and let me know that you weren't available.  If you're conducting a business that supposely incorporate legitimacy and professionalism at least show some effort to satisfy your customers contary to rudeness and less consideration for them. This is the 2cd time within 3 wks that  you reneged on a scheduled appointment that i had with you---you did this with my daughter  and had  the audacity to respond 2 weeks after the comfirmed  appointment, you're rude and inconsiderate....Worst business ever! Saturday 3/30/19 Arriving to Js remixed it was extremely hard to find (you have to go through the maple bar double doors). But when entering Js it's a small hair salon extremely friendly people. I went in for my hair to be crochet into dreads. I have slightly curly hair at about 4-6 inches long. J took about 6 hours to complete my entire head working slowly and carefully with a few extra hours to blunt the tips. Overall the experience was enjoyable and J is extremely easy to talk to and friendly. I get really good vibes here. Monday 4/1/19 I woke up to the roots of my dreads becoming undone. I followed all precautions given by J and I contacted him about my dread issues. He promptly responded and was able to schedule me for the next day to fix whatever concerns I've had- that's great customer service! Usually in the beauty industry if you have a question or concern and you already paid then the person will put you on the back burner and try to weasel their way out of fixxing their mistakes. I feel comfortable taking my business and spending my money here because I know that J is reliable and takes his craft to heart. read more

I'm so glad we went with him because he touched up my boyfriends dreads and made them look amazing, j can do any hair type! He is so talented,friendly, and very genuine. Honestly, I should've written this review as soon as I came out of the salon. The man is nice, but let me tell you... I was in communication with the owner the morning before my appointment, since I was still taking my hair down from a previous style. He offered me more time, which I was gracious for since he could've cancelled. However when I got there, he had me comb out my own hair. And if he did comb out my hair, he combs hair starting at the roots, claiming he's "heavy handed." He took frequent breaks to check his phone. And after doing two rows of jumbo braids, even though I asked for smedium, he asked to take lunch break. He started washing and drying my hair at 11am. I didn't go home until 1:30am the next day. I did ask to leave and come back since I had an event at 7pm (got back by 10pm), but for the size of the braids, I don't think it shouldn't have taken this long. Maybe dreads are more this guys speed, but his daughter is a better stylist and can actually part straight. Don't get braids from here!!! read more

This guy and shop is beyond cool. The owner, J is really nice and outgoing. He answer the phone immediately and was flexible with my request. I literally called him to make am appt on christmas day on the 23rd. He was closing early chirstmas eve and closed christmas day. I told him I work 4pm to 12 am in Stockton and will be working on both days. Plus I have a morning job so I only have a few hours to sequeze in. He offer to do my hair after hours at 1am and I was shock that he will go out of his way for me. I wanted crohet braids which is normally $80. So i was skeptical and wondering what he will be charging me for after hours and he said it will still be the same. I was shock and immediately said yes. I know people would not ususally do this so I offer more money. We increase it to a $100 and we were both happy. An extra plus is I decided on a part for my hair and ended up not liking it and he took an extra 20mins to fix it and change the part. Plus he cut and style my hair. He really great and afforable. They were also late to the appointment. I then asked if I could come back to fix my part because they did that wrong too and they said okay, so I told them I would be coming in to the shop and they said "ok". I've found my loctician for life I originally had an appointment for the 15th for dread extensions, but I called earlier this past week and got an appointment for Saturday, 9/1. That alone had me impressed, since J's seems so popular. From the time I arrived, J was ready to go and was by far the most professional and attentive stylist I've ever met. He took complete care of me, not just with my hair - making sure nothing was too tight or pulling - but also with everything from temperature control to the Netflix entertainment to good ol conversation. And he was still able to handle other customer calls while working on my hair. Not all heroes wear capes, people. I'd give 10 stars if I could. Service is beyond stellar, and the price is unbeatable. Went here to get my son starter locks and boy has it been a disappointment..... initially I was charged $150 to get things going. They turned out ok only to unravel and grow puffy after just two days. I was told that the next appointment would be $45 dollars for it to actually be $95. I voiced my concerns of the longevity of dreads not staying in and asked if there was something he can use to make them stay nicer, longer then two days. He said yes but again nothing was added to the dreads to increase longevity. Another two days went by and same results of dreads growing puffy and unraveling. After second appointment he stated to come back after a month and book appointment which I did, only to show at scheduled appointment time with no one available and shop closed. I WAS SCAMMED! Do not get lock extensions from here!!!!! I was OVER CHARGED and GASLIT + he has no idea how to do lock extensions. HE SUPERGLUED AND BRAIDED MY LOCK EXTENSIONS IN .I payed 2K and he admitted he just wanted to take my money after the fact while tryna apologize. He made me pay 800$ before the appointment for the hair. (Total 1600) At the appointment he shows me locks that are HUGE, DOUBLE the size of what I wanted and tried to lie and tell me they are the exact size of the picture, lied that they'll shrink and wouldn't give me my $800 dollars deposit back. He kept apologizing saying it was both our fault ( miscommunication) saying I had to pay an extra 800$ for the correct size FOR HIS MESSUP when he knew exactly what I wanted before hand. I know he scammed my by using hair he already had and pocketed my extra 800$ So I went with the bigger ones cause 1. He manipulated me, 2. HE WAS UNPROFESSIONAL, ARGUING WITH ME AND HIS WIFE, & scaring me and I'm timid and hate confrontation 3. No refund & I didn't have an extra 800$ Then he fucked up my hair by supergluing it in. HE CHARGED ME 300$ FOR 5 EXTRA DREADS. And he took my picture off his Instagram cause he knows how bad my hair looks. DO NOT go to this greedy money hungry man. He will fuck up your hair. He doesn't have any training in lock extensions, they all look fake like braids with Marley hair. Not natural at all. And he won't refund. If I could rate 0 stars I would. For so many reasons I should have cancelled on site and walked away. This is a review to mainly inform those who have locs ( NOT dreads) that they should beware. My fiance and I both went in to have different services. She wanted maintenance with two loc twist and I was having a few locs reattached to the back. First, not having a shampoo bowl or sink in a "salon" is a big no no. 1st red flag. Any great stylist wants to make sure that their client hair is properly clean and how do you clean your hands inbetween clients without running water? 2nd red flag I mean I am from the country and love not wear shoes but to be barefooted on a "professional establishment" I'm sure this behavior doesn't fly nor comply with OSHA's regulations or the department board of health. Okay now with the "services" provided. The retwist was a joke and didn't last nor was it neat. She's a really sweet person and thanked J even though she wasn't satisfied. I decided to have locs reattached to the back of my head. I had been wearing a fade style in the back for about 7 years and after cutting the locs on the top I wanted to attach them to the back. The back hair was 3 inches or more so I had them in little twist to camouflage them a bit. There wasn't any organization to them. I was told that there is a $12 parting fee? Say what? When you are charging a $10 per loc reattachement fee and you are using a automatic tool charging a parting fee is a bit ridiculous I'm my opinion. I had no clue that he proceeded with out organizing the hair better before reattaching. J was asking too many questions on what to do with the services and it was a sign that he was not educated nor experienced with how to properly care for hair yet alone locs. I was told to wait 3 weeks before washing my hair. I shampooed my locs 4 days shy of 30 days after the services. I wet my hair and immediately 4 locs fell out. Eventually a total of 9 out of the 15 were on the floor. J was contacted regarding the issue and right out of the gate he started making accusations that maybe we got into a fight or went to the club and got a little crazy and that's why my locs fell out. Say whattt!!?? He claimed that I was advised to wait 3-4 weeks to wash my hair. (Which I did) We are two very professional, respectful, honest and fair individuals. We gave J the opportunity to make it right and to me honest a simple apology would have sufficed not the finger pointing. In the end after the fact he did offer for us to commute over an hour to reattach my locs again. I declined because honestly I think he is incapable and unprofessional. read more

Rather than being honest with me about the fact that he was short staffed and was supper busy he decided it would be wiser to lie. I brought in Bobbi Boss Locs and he said he couldn't individually wrap them because there was no loop. Huh? You make the loop with your finger, the locs don't come with a gaping hole. I hadn't had my baby loca maintained for about 8 months prior to seeing J - so going into it I knew it was going to be difficult tucking in my loose hair that had broken off and crochet the roots tight. Jay washed, conditioned, pulled loose hair back into the loc, palm rolled, trimmed, interlocked new growth and created the style I desired for a more than fair price. I went in for the first time yesterday. My retwist didnt take long and it was tight which I was really happy about. I went to a different location to get my locs started and I was skeptical about going somewhere else to get a retwist but I feel really good about my decision. My retwist came out great.
