Reviews With Photos - Ju Hachi

I was a little skeptical when my partner suggested we have sushi at Ju Hachi last Saturday night. The first time I ate here back in 2023, I ordered the ramen and it was, without question, the saltiest bowl of ramen I have ever had. I hadn't been back since. That said, it was already around 8:00 p.m., we had just gotten home after a long day in the Bay, and I figured I wasn't ordering ramen this time, so why not give their sushi a chance? When we arrived, there were only about three groups dining in the restaurant. Everything started off well, and I honestly had no complaints. We ordered the spicy edamame as an appetizer, and it came out quickly. It was delicious and I'd definitely recommend ordering it. I'm pretty basic when it comes to sushi, so I ordered the shrimp tempura roll, which the menu describes as shrimp tempura, cucumber, teriyaki sauce, and sesame seeds. My partner ordered a lion king roll and a California roll for us to share. We were both in the mood for something refreshing, which is why we chose sushi. Unfortunately, that's when things went downhill. I took my first bite of the shrimp tempura roll and immediately felt like something was missing. After looking at it more closely, I realized it was literally just shrimp tempura wrapped in rice and seaweed. There was no cucumber. I already knew Ju Hachi's version of the roll didn't include avocado, which was fine because I had read the menu before ordering. But cucumber was listed as one of the ingredients, so I pulled up the menu on my phone just to make sure I hadn't misread it. Sure enough, cucumber was supposed to be included. I called our waitress over, and she was incredibly kind. She looked at both my shrimp tempura roll and our California roll and was just as surprised as we were to see that both were missing cucumber. She took them back to the sushi chefs to ask what happened. If you've eaten here before, you know the sushi bar is completely visible from the dining room, so you can hear and see most of what's going on. The chefs told her they had run out of cucumber, which is why it wasn't included. You could tell she was frustrated because no one had told her they were out. She even rolled her eyes and mentioned that it would have been nice if someone had let her know beforehand. At that point I thought maybe they'd offer to substitute something else, like avocado, or at least ask if we'd still like the rolls knowing a main ingredient was missing. Instead, the rolls came back exactly the same, and the only explanation was that they were out of cucumber and sorry. My partner looked over at me apologetically because he was the one who suggested we come back. He knows I've intentionally avoided Ju Hachi ever since my ramen experience a few years ago. Back then I didn't say anything because I'm not someone who likes to complain. What disappointed me most wasn't that they ran out of cucumber. Restaurants run out of ingredients sometimes, and that's understandable. What bothered me was the lack of communication. If the sushi chefs had simply told our waitress when she entered the order or even before then that they were out of cucumber, I'm confident she would have come back to let us know before making the rolls. That would have given us the chance to order something different or even decide to eat somewhere else. For me, cucumber is what gives both a shrimp tempura roll and a California roll that fresh, crisp bite. Without it, the shrimp tempura roll was just fried shrimp wrapped in rice, and it honestly wasn't what l ordered. Had I known they were out of cucumber, we probably would have gone somewhere else that could satisfy my craving. Yeah cucumber might not be a big deal for some people but it affected my dining experience and I didn't get what I ordered and paid full price for, I would have appreciated the psa so that I could make the decision to willfully order that roll. Long story short, it took three years for me to give Ju Hachi another chance, and unfortunately this visit didn't do much to change my opinion. The spicy edamame was great, our waitress was friendly and handled the situation as professionally as she could, but the lack of communication from the kitchen left us disappointed, along with the lack of options afterward.

Went to Ju Hachi for the first time on Father's Day and it was a great experience. It was a little pricey though. We went at around 6:30/7 o'clock and found a parking spot right in front! How lucky are we. We went in and got seated right away at the sushi bar. The staff was welcoming. We sat right in front of Chef G. He made us a omakase with the freshest fish and it melted right in our mouths. We couldn't resist getting the ankimo. Delicious!! Overall everything was amazing and food came out super fast!!

lemon zest and green onion to cover old rice smell?

I always enjoy hearing "irrashaimase" at Japanese restaurant . It means they welcomes customers. I like the way they put Sake and other Japanese things to decorate the place. Only problem is Food. I may be very picky about Sushi because I am from Japan, but I had good sushi in bay area several times. I think i just happened to choose bad one in Sacramento. I hope someone would recommend good one in here next time. My friend and I ordered chef's choice sushi. (Omakase) When i saw green onion and lemon zest all over the Sushi... I knew I would not like it. Fish did not taste fresh, bad sadly rice was worse. It had old rice smell. I think chef used lemon zest to hide old rice smell. Are there any good Sushi place in Sacramento area? If so, please teach me!!

We visited on 12/26. Since many restaurants were closed after Christmas, we really appreciated that this place was open as usual. Thank you! The food was well prepared and enjoyable overall. While nothing particularly stood out as especially memorable for us, it was a pleasant dining experience and a nice place to stop by during the holiday season‼

Been wanting to try this place for a while and it didn't disappoint! Asked the sushi chef Conner for some recommendations and he gave us some bangers! Loved the spicy Maria and the tan tan ramen. Fair warning, it's a solid medium spice, which was perfect for me but a little too spicy for my fiancé lol Food: 4.5 Service: 5 Ambiance: 4 Marcels foodie score: 4.5

I have enjoyed many a great meal at Ju Hachi, however, I am ashamed to say that I have inadvertently been gatekeeping my FAVORITE sushi spot in midtown. I love Ju Hachi so much that it is where I choose to enjoy my New Year's Eve sushi dinner each year. What a way to close out the year. To be a regular at this quaint corner spot, and get recognized by staff means the world to me. High quality, authentic, and delicious sushi, with good service. Highly recommend. It's not every day that Perfect for a date night, or business lunch. I'm even comfortable recommending my girlfriends to eat alone at Ju Hachi. Sit at the sushi bar, make friends, and enjoy great service. Open late 7 days a week. Reservations not needed but recommended due to the size of their dining area, and staff. Pro tip, ask for an order of fresh pickled wasabi. Be a good guest and offer to buy the sushi chefs a beer, even if they are not able to enjoy it at the moment, they can have it at their shift's end. Here are my favorite menu items : 1. Mixed Sashimi 2. All the nigiri 3. Hot Mama Roll (fried shrimp, crab mix, spicy tuna, topped with avocado, sea steak, jalapeño, sriracha, teriyaki sauce, spicy aioli, scallions, masago) 4. Spicy Maria Roll (shrimp tempura, snow crab mix, topped with avocado, lemon, jalapeños, salmon, white onions, chili oil, ponzu, seven spice) 5. Vanessa Madness Roll (only found on their specials menu) 6. Chubby Andy Roll 7. Mixed Tempura 8. Fresh Oysters 9. BBQ Albacore 10. Miso soup 11. Gyoza 12. A couple few Sapporo to wash it all down, as per usual.

10/5/25 My little man's wanted some sushi for his bday week so we ended up at Ju Hachi for dinner. We ordered almost everything but the kitchen sink to try and items a solid spot. Ambiance is ok, staff was friendly. Street parking available and wasn't difficult for us. Carpaccio was delish and table fave. Soft shell crab was a tad fishy scent :( Agadashi Tofu and spicy edamame were as expected. Rolls were good. We ordered suggested rolls from staff :)

The Capitol Roll has made its way to my top special rolls from restaurants. I tried Ju Hachi for the first time, on a whim after working an event across the street and ordered this right before they closed. I can't say too much about the service and ambiance of this place, because I quickly got this roll to-go, but this roll was phenomenal. Besides the Capitol Roll, I also got to try pieces of the salmon maki, and it was delicious. I'll definitely be back during the day and dine-in the next time I visit!

I ordered take out for a late lunch. On this visit, I ordered Wagyu nigiri and Katsudon. It tasted moderately good, but not great. Both items lacked flavor/seasoning. I would appreciate more eggs in my katsudon. I may just order ramen from this establishment in the future.

Just updating my review since being back and trying new items. So far, I have not had a bad roll yet! It's all been so tasty and filling. Their spicy edamame is so flavorful and delicious, perfect for sharing too. The staff are super nice and they get pretty busy especially late in the afternoon. It's such a cute spot to dine in late on a rainy afternoon like this past week, because it's warm and bright and lively inside the restaurant. Usually I sit outside, and sometimes this can delay service when they are busy, but I've never had a bad experience here. Definitely recommend coming here, it's also in an ideal location because there's so much around that you can check out as well, and lots of places to park on the streets.

This is still our go-to sushi spot. We ordered the veggie sushi, beef dish, and stuffed mushrooms. Everything is served exactly how we like it and it's so filling and delicious. The staff is very nice and came to check on us and provide refills on water. We've never had a bad meal here and I often leave the restaurant and think about the meal I had several days later. I love this place!

    Michelle L.

A bit disappointed with the sushi here. Don't get me wrong, the spot is cozy and the service very friendly, I just didn't particularly like the rolls we ordered. These were some of their "most popular" rolls also so that makes me feel like maybe I wouldn't like any of their rolls moving forward. We ordered the Orange roll and the Hot Mama roll. Due to just overall taste, what felt like spoiled or borderline spoiled avocado, I don't think we will be returning. That being said, the service is friendly and efficient and the space itself quite cute.

I'm picky about sushi restaurants because the freshness and quality of the fish can be such a hit or miss. This was a hit! The sushi rolls were generous, and yummy. They have an extensive menu that you can order from. The spicy edamame is great choice for sharing. The service was awesome. Very relaxed and chill environment. Would recommend!

After the food was served he checked if we needed anything and refilled water. There is indoor and outdoor seating. It was busy on a Saturday evening so reservations are recommended. Free parking is on the street.
