First time here....and it was delicious! The place is right before you enter the town on Cold Spring. It's a cute small place; only about 6 tables. While we were deciding what to order , the owner Juanita came out and welcomed us. She was a sweetheart! We ordered nachos , quesadillas , burritos. All of it was fantastic ! Again this is proof that I've been spoiled by Mexican food in NJ. We just happened to pass by from a trip to the Seven Lakes. The cafe-style restaurant is right on the side of the main street as you pass by the sleepy town. In retrospect, the food here is okay. Requested less salt and it was followed. Menu is rather limited, but that's okay -- quality over quantity, right? But the $9-12 price tag, receiving only the main dish and a black bean bowl, is a bit overpriced for a small town tacoria. We had to ask for the beans and then they delivered it. We had to ask for chips and then they delivered it. When we asked for the rice (the menu says including rice and beans), they mentioned that it's an old menu and the current dish is not supposed to have one. Eh? (But they later brought us the rice anyway). Again, food is average, but for the value, many of the items are mispriced, and having to ask for everything that's included? When I picked up my take out order, the team carefully compared my order to their checklist, making sure not to miss anything...then they loaded into my car. And dinner was a big hit! What a wonderful surprise! One of the best Mexican restaurants we have found on the East Coast. Featuring authentic real Mexican food, in New York State! Juanita and her family are kind generous and her cooking is filled with love and passion. The daily specials are unique and incredible. The food is made fresh for every order, It's well worth the wait. Make sure you have her guacamole, it is stupendous. The service is friendly and sincere. We eat here at least once a week, and look forward to receiving the weekly specials on email, which tempt us until we next go to the restaurant. I highly recommend Juanita's Kitchen. I was looking forward to trying this place near my home. All good reviews from friends. I never see anyone in it, but I know the neighbors I spoke to said it was very good. We ordered our meal to pick up. The food was great. The prices were not. We ordered steak tacos - about $4-$ 5 each ( depending on how many you ordered) were nicely filled with steak. Great. Sour cream - extra, salsa, extra. The rice and beans - each in a separate 1/2 cup container was $5 EACH. 5 tacos ( the 3-4 inch ones) with fiesta nachos and a side of rice and beans came to $45. Come on. If you go up the road to Cafe Maya you get 3 bigger tacos with side of refried beans, sour cream (free) , tortilla chips and salsa (free) and ( drum roll ) you eat in the restaurant. Extra tortilla chips and salsa - free. Extra sour cream - free. Go figure. read more

You can taste the love in the food. This chicken mole poblano tamale is authentic and blew me away. I am picky and my mom is a chef, so I am bougie with food. The black beans were lovely. So trying to have a nice sunday lunch in Cold Spring but was no parking. So on the way back to the parkway we stumbled on Juanitas Kitchen. Upon entering there are about 6 tables for dining in and a couple tables outside if you choose. Decor is ahhhh ok. Nothing special. Gentlemen took our order and was very friendly and pleasant. Sat with our "real sugar " spirits and waited. Food came and it was on... Beef empanadas were first....nice flavor but a little greasy. Was definitely homemade with bits of veggies inside.And the green sauce that comes with it is awsome!!!! Nachos with chicken... ahhhhh just ok. Chicken had good flavor and everything was fresh but the chips themselves were very bland. Daughter ordered a steak bowl which she said was excellent being I didnt give it a try. The 2 downfall with me which is not all that big was the food was served in to go containers. Figured if were staying we would be served with plates and bowls. Second is the price. Yesterday I had lunch at Juanita's. The daily enchilada special was magnificent. Everyone was so cheerful, which matched the sunny yellow walls:) Outstanding Mexican food! I left my purse there and did not discover this until hours later, when I arrived home, which is 45 minutes away. When I called, the ladies had locked it away and had tried texting me several times. I've never been compelled to write a yelp review before, but I had to now because I wanted to rave about how fabulous this place is. The food is absolutely DELICIOUS! There are tons of tasty options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. I love Juanita's veggie tacos and her churros, and her guacamole is absolutely fabulous!! One thing I'd say is most impressive is the amount of vegetarian and vegan options there are (and knowing most Mexican restaurants, it can be hard to find places that serve a lot of vegetarian/vegan options). I took my vegetarian boyfriend here and he absolutely loved it! Juanita gave him a delicious soup and salad. The restaurant is decorated beautifully, with tons of traditional Mexican pieces of art on every shelf across the room. The blue and yellow walls give the restaurant a lovely, bright atmosphere! This place is also wonderful for families! There are tons of games, coloring books, and even a toy kitchen in the front of the restaurant for small children to play with. I've even seen Juanita come up and play with a child and ask the child about what they were cooking. She really is so incredibly sweet and lovely. All of the 3-star and below reviews are people annoyed about the price, but this isn't your typical cheap Mexican food. It's organic, made-to-order, and fresh. Juanita carefully chooses vendors for her meats and vegetables so that they are up to standard for her clients, and the price reflects its fine quality. Good Lord! What did I do? Based on the number of 5 star reviews, I thought maybe I'd be able to find some wonderful Mexican food. Sadly, twas not to be. I've eaten there twice and ordered the special for take-out once. Both times we've eaten in house, we had to wait FOREVER!! to get our food. The fried empanadas were very greasy and the vegetables inside were raw and hard. The tacos aren't really tacos, but tiny little flautas filled with a tablespoon or two of filling---for $5 each! A dinner of these "tacos" are three tiny little fried rollups for $14! No rice, no beans, no pico, no accompaniment at all. If you pay the exorbitant prices for these add-ons you get a 1/2 cup plain Uncle Ben's rice, greasy mush of flavorless beans and a 2 ounce portion of salsa in a cheap plastic cup. The kicker for me was when I ordered a take-out meal of their daily special of braised short ribs for $18. I opened the plastic to reveal 3 tiny little ribs SWIMMING IN GREASE with no more that 3 thin slices of zucchini. The ribs were tender, but had no other flavor at all. No sauce, and again, a chintzy side of Uncle Ben's rice. Maybe this is NY/Mexican "home cooking" but for the prices they charge, service should be faster, portions more plentiful, less greasy, and above all, it should have some FLAVOR other than salt, pepper and garlic powder. Maybe I'm spoiled, but after dining at Caro's (the oldest Mexican restaurant in the US) in Rio Grande City, TX, Coyote Cafe in Santa Fe, NM and numerous taco trucks in San Diego, CA, this place is just sad. ANYONE with the barest culinary skills could make a better SOTB meal at home for 1/10th of the price in 1/2 the time. read more

Never knew Cold Spring had a pleasantly delicious Authentic Mexican Restaurant. It's a hidden gem. Just recently discovered this spot... I must say it was surprisingly very satisfying. I tried the chorizo quesadilla and torta.... soooooo Delicious!!! It was a bit overpriced but we were all satisfied with what we had so it was worth our money. Tacos didn't look too pleasing in pictures so we didn't bother ordering any. But other than that we were not disappointed. Juanita's was the cherry top to our day in Cold Spring! This place has maybe the best guacamole I've had outside Mexico - seriously good. Tamales are also on point. Cute Covid setup with a few tables outside and a to-go menu by phone or on their website.
