I wish I could share the enthusiasm that the other reviewers have heaped on Juanita's. I went on a cold Winter day and realized that it wasn't a lot warmer in the cafe, compared to outside. So chilly that Juanita was wearing a Winter knit hat the whole time I was there. The prices are OK. Some things seem very reasonable yet other things make no sense - like having to pay a pretty penny for Chips and Salsa. Being that every Mexican restaurant gives you chips and salsa for free, it's odd to have to pay for it. Not being offered water, and having to pay for a bottle water is also a bit lame. As for the food. I got a veggie burrito. It was OK. A nice mix of veggies. Not overly flavorful but not bad either. The close out this lackluster lunch was someone presenting me with a credit card reader. I was never shown a bill, just a card reader with the total on the screen - not cool and a tad rude. Being that they oddly left the handheld device with me I toyed around with it to find a screen readout with the itemized bill - which was correct - but I really shouldn't have to take their word that the bill is correct. I really wanted to like the place but I left wondering what all the hype is about. Reading someone say that this was the best Mexican food they've ever had makes me think that they either haven't eaten at more than 3 or 4 Mexican restaurants in their life or they're pulling our leg. read more

A great post hike place to stop by for refreshing aguas frescas and mexican food. Tacos are a decent size and come topped with a tasty green sauce. Mole tamale was super delicious with the perfect smoky chocolatey mole flavor. Would definitely stop by again when in the area! read more

Great little Mexican restaurant right on the outskirts of Cold Spring. Quick service and friendly staff. You can customize if you want to exclude toppings from your burrito. After 3 hours of hiking and natural rock climbing we need it fuel for the body. My friend suggested Juanita's and im glad we listened. Homey small Mexican restaurant. My friend got the picadillo bowl and said it was delicious will definitely try next time. I got a salad as currently doing a nutrition challenge that makes challenging to eat out but they were accommodating to my restrictions and made me a delicious salad. I had gotten a gift card to Juanita's kitchen for the holidays so I decided to use it one night for dinner. They have a small parking lot or street parking. I walked right in to a festive, looking seating area and a friendly cashier. I ordered a burrito, a cheese, quesadilla an empanada and the box of tacos for dinner (with a mix of chicken, steak and chorizo). Everything was very tasty. Cute spot with great food and reasonable prices. Located by the trailheads of Nelsonville and Undercliff. After 4 hours of hiking, this was the perfect reward. We ordered the steak bowl (~$15), steak burrito(~$12), jalapeño and cheese tamale, and tres leches. Portions of the bowl and burrito were pretty big and very good. The tamale was a little spicy and very tasty. The tres leches texture reminded me of corn bread. It was moist and not too sweet so I kept going back for more. Can be pricey depending on what you get. Found this place after doing a quick search looking for places near a hiking spot. I ordered 2 empanadas (one chicken, one beef, there's cheese too). Both were delicious and came with a green salsa and red sauce. The green salsa was fantastic and the red was spicy, a little too much for me but my friends liked it. Empanadas were a decent size, hot, fresh, and crisp on the outside. I also got a tamale filled with chicken and green salsa. It's served in a corn husk and was also delicious and smooth. I added a little extra green salsa as I ate. All 3 items were $5 each and then I had a mango soda as well. Came out to a little over $17. They have a single, neutral bathroom and a parking lot. Great place to stop after hiking. It's decently sized inside, but they also have some outdoor seating right out front and near the parking lot. Great for when the weather permits. Came across this place via Google reviews and decided to stop in and was not disappointed! Wow ! Food was incredible! So fresh and so tasty! Everything was packed with flavor and lit up our pallets with the quality of the ingredients! We came in and were seated right away and was helped by the nice waitress. We shared the following: Empanadas - They were twice as big as the regular ones. The beef one was pretty flavorful but the chicken one lacked flavor and was a tad dry. Steak Quesadillas - A bit smaller than usual but reasonable for the price. Solid. Chorizo Molletes - First time having this; the smell reminded me of pizza for some reason. The refried beans were so good. Recommend! Cuban Torta - All the ingredients jived really well and the flavor was well-balanced - wasn't overpowered by the pickles nor mustard. Recommend! We sat ourselves and called to place an order and only waited about 15 minutes. ~~~~~CLEANLINESS~~~~~ - There's a table at the entrance blocking you from coming too far into the restaurant, keeping a safe distance between you and the employees - On the table there are Lysol wipes, the menu, napkins, a bottle opener, and a card scanner for you to tap or insert your card ~~~~~SERVICE~~~~~ - I interacted with two different employees(once when I came to pick up the food and the other when I decided to buy a soda), who were both friendly! - I did ask if they had ice, but unfortunately they did not :( ~~~~~FOOD~~~~~ *Soft Tacos - Steak ($15) - The tacos are double-layered which is always appreciated! - The steak was a little red, so I knew it wasn't overcooked, but it seemed a bit tough - could have been that they cut the meat with the grain instead of against it - Pretty good size, good amount of meat in the tacos - Probably wouldn't order the steak again, but willing to try the chorizo or chicken next time! *Medium Guacamole ($16) - We came here because someone had said this was the best guacamole outside of Mexico - Tasty and did not disappoint - Also added some to our tacos - Was nice to have this on the side - The guacamole comes with a paper bag of chips which were crunchy and salted. Had the common yellow tortilla chips as well as some purple ones. - It was a big serving for the 3 of us - we weren't able to finish the guacamole or the chips - If you do like guacamole, I feel like the chip-to-guacamole ratio is off and you'd have leftover guac *Churros ($2) - We each got a plain churro, which we saved for later - It still tasted good when we ate it about an hour later - not soggy or too hard - Good crust and the inside was still soft - Was pleasantly surprised to see that they didn't skimp out on the size of the churro! ~~~~~DRINKS~~~~~ *Coke ($3+) - They have a drink fridge and I saw the coke bottle and wanted to buy one because it was hot out. For Mexican food, things were a bit overpriced. 3 Tacos for $15 and they were smallish like the ones you can get from a good truck for a couple dollars less each. They also could have been more flavorful. Also $8 for guac and chips was a bit much...guac was great though. Service was a bit slow but you knew you were getting things made to order. You are not getting this food off a taco truck . Spend the extra few bucks and try this place. Currently having a Mexican Breakfast of Quesadilla con quest made with authentic Mexican cheese and added chorizo. I have no idea how there could be negative reviews for this place. I've had dozens of meals from Juanita's and never been disappointed. Nor have any of my guests or others I know who eat there regularly. I've eaten plenty of Mexican food in CA and Manhattan, so I know what's good. For the second week in a row I arrived home after picking up my take-out from Juanita's only to find that items were missing. Shame on me for not checking the bag before leaving the restaurant. I just assumed that since I spent $70 they would have been sure not to miss anything. There was only one table of people seated, so this error can't be blamed on a high volume of orders. I called and notified them of the error and I was told that I can come back and get the empanadas, they had them there. No way was I driving back to get them. Why I should I be inconvenienced and why would I want cold food at that point? I said I prefer a refund applied to my card that was used. I was never asked for my card information to apply the refund, so I'm not holding my breath that I will get the money back. I just won't be going here anymore. The food is good, but $70 is a high price for small portions and these types of inconveniences to customers. I hope they realize this is a problem and strive to do a better job going forward for the other customers. read more

One of the worst tasting meals of my entire life. While the food looks like it might be decent, the flavor mimics a 7Eleven roller hotdog after 3 days left in the sun. The best part about my meal was conversing with my colleagues about the horrendous and vile flavor we were consuming. If you plan on eating at Juanita's i suggest asking for extra hot sauce to drown out the bland textures and nauseating flavor.
