Probably my favorite Mexican place in btown. Sitting area is pretty small but has a nice feel of a classic Mexican restaurant. Chips are great and I almost always eat way too many of them. Menu has plenty of options and I have always found the service to be friendly and fun to chat with you. Great environment and open later than most which is awesome. Theres a bat upstairs and friendly staff. Bright yellow building make it a fun environment as well. I work in Bloomington and thought Mexican sounded good for my lunch break. I opened up the Yelp app and saw that you could order Juannita's for take out and delivery (which excited me!) It was easy to order and I liked that I didn't have to pay until I picked it up. Upon arriving I was impressed with the outside of the building. It was a nice little space; small but had character. My food was immediately ready when I got there but it almost made me think it may be cold. It was kind of just sitting on a shelf by itself. There was confusion on if it was actually my food or not, nobody seemed to know. I paid and left. When I got back to my car and began to dig in I noticed right away the portion was very small. Although it was a lunch special I still thought there would be more food. I got a beef enchilada with shredded meat. The enchilada sauce was delicious but everything else was so mediocre. Again, my food was cold. I understand that may have been due to how long it take to get there to pick it up, but still I was not impressed. They give you chips and salsa with your take out, which was nice but the salsa had very little flavor and was very watery. Overall, I don't think I'll go back. read more

Juannita's is filling a void left in my life after the decline of another favorite Mexican restaurant. I've eaten their a few times, and while at the time I felt their vegetarian options were lacking, I was impressed with what they did with a veggie fajita. Service is solid if less than perfectly attentive, and I heard many people say this was their new favorite spot. Unfortunately, Juannita's has opened in a location that has historically been TERRIBLE for restaurants (it's the fourth one in that building since I moved to town four years ago), so I'm waiting until they pass the one year mark before i declare them a must-visit. However, if you want good, AUTHENTIC Mexican food, this is the place to go...but hurry, there's no telling if they can break the 1 year record. read more

Definitely the best Mexican food I have had in Bloomington. Their carnitas are incredibly good! Their beans and rice are perfection. They also have excellent margaritas. I mean what's not to love?! The food was ok or less than ok but still you could think about returning; even though the service was the worst ever, starting from the way our server treated us. She acted in a rude way; won't let us order if we didn't go in the order she said; complaint to us if we didn't count the number of drinks we had per person even when she had separate checks; they brought by mistake plates of rice and beans for all and when we already tried them, they noticed they were not ours and simply just took them away from our table and mouths and passed them to another table apparently. Pretty much the saddest tacos I've had. Dry and under seasoned meats. Also, very expensive for anyone who knows how much tacos should be. My husband and I visited this establishment with the hopes of eating some real authentic mexican food. The food certainly was authentic but really lacked in flavor. I tried the beef tongue taco and honestly couldnt eat it due to the lack of flavor. The pear catcus they slap on the plate is slimy and tasted like a really old pickle. I'm coming here with high hopes. It looks like a promising place to obtain authentic Mexican food and is supposed to be around $5 lunch $10 dinner according to their ad on the radio. I was sat down and given chips and salsa but not asked if I wanted a drink. I began looking at the menu and notice that hardly anything is $5 or less except on the taqueria menu where you can get single burritos for $5 or tacos for $3. Nothing on the taqueria menu comes with rice and beans so you have to pay an extra $1.99 for that. After spending about 5 minutes deciding what I wanted I sat the menu down and proceeded to play on my phone. After a couple of minutes I started the stopwatch on my phone. After 8 1/2 minutes they finally came to ask if I wanted a drink. They brought me my water and hesitated before finally asking if I was ready to order. I ordered a burrito with the spicy shredded chicken and then waited for another 26 minutes before receiving my food. The portion size appears to me to be fairly small. The meat was bland and Luke warm. The server didn't come back to check on me until I was finished and had pushed empty plate the the other side of the table and waited. The salsa was actually sub par but we ask our waitress if there was something spicier that we could have and she brought out some different sauces and we made our own. Prices were fairly reasonable, and even though our order was messed up our waitress was super nice and the replacement food came out within two minutes. Great authentic food and incredibly fast service! I ordered the tamale lunch, and ended up adding another chicken tamale, it was so delicious. I frequent the Tamale Place in Indianapolis, and I personally enjoyed Juannita's more. I had my food within 10 minutes of walking inside the door, and my waitress was very efficient. I just ordered a steak taco from here and have not had anything as authentic since the amazing taco trucks and dishes in California and Oregon. Made with corn tortillas, steak, onion and cilantro...served with some sort of cilantro salsa as well as chips and salsa...yummy! Well done and great service. read more

I'd recommend being careful when reading the menu... the descriptions are unclear and oddly worded. El burro "wrapped in lettuce", but what is the burro being wrapped? Ordered one with chicken, and it appears the burro being wrapped is an absense of chicken with tons of filler rice and beans, and then the lettuce and other things inside. Very bad service on 6/22/18. Ate there with my family and the server Carmen was very rude and disrespectful. But enough of that. My bill was 72.42.$ as i left no tip on my card like I normally do. My mother in law left a 20$ tip. Today I checked my account and it shows that someone on their team added in a 26$ tip making my charge a total of 99.05$ . I spoke with my family members and come to find out that my sister in law was charged extra as well. I will be filing a dispute with Bloomington police department and my bank. The Mexican tacos are good but extremely expensive. The pozole was the standout dish that night. Last time for me. Food is good. Prices are ridiculous. Servers are nice but the facility is horrendous. It is always something with them. This time We went in with a group of 20 and they sat us in a room that was 90 degrees and stifling. When we got there they rolled in a couple AC units and plugged them in...one would only blow hot air...just silly. Would have been cooler to sit on the deck with the air circulation. One server for 20 people...and he was amazing but totally soaked by the time we left. They say the building owner won't let them install AC ...I say move. I am done. Updated response.... You asked... No not the first time for me. Every time i go there something goes on that makes me not want to come back. Your "I'm sorry" wont bring me back again. Your killing your business and your servers in that facility...why on earth would you stay there. First lets talk prices. Food is good...not amazing but good. But $19 for a large margarita made with agave wine and that was on special for $3 off? $18 for fajitas? A burrito stuffed with rice for $12 and it doesn't come with any side...now at some high end restaurants I could see these prices. (OK I take that back...I have never heard of such prices.) I ate at El Rancheros last night and a beef burrito with no side is $4. Steak fajitas are $11 and a just slightly smaller (probably a 16oz. margarita is 6.99 and that facility is amazing. Your overpriced apples to apples. I am not cheap but I am not stupid either. Second...instead of moving or installing AC...your building an new outside patio...in the parking lot. You barely have enough parking now. Where are these people going to park? Third...You have a rear entrance to patio seating...but no sign that says "check in first on the first floor"...we waited 20 minutes in the heat at a table to find out this. Get a sign... Fourth...there is no communications...a month ago we had to tell our server (same guy) about the daily special and the fact that even after making reservations that our party of 20 were coming at 7pm, the portable AC units were not turned on upstairs prior to our arrival...the temp there after an hour of running the unit was still 89 degrees...maybe your used to it...my 85 year old parents aren't. I've been to Juannita's a few times now and while the food is generally pretty good, the service is simply dreadful. I ordered fajitas today and the heaping pile of steak and onions (which were delicious) came with three corn tortillas about the size of a coaster. The food was good, but I clearly needed more tortillas to enjoy it properly. By the time I got someone's attention and actually got them (the first waitress I flagged down forgot in the fifteen feet it took to get to the kitchen), the food was cold. It's been like this every time. Wrong orders, empty glasses, wait staff that forget you exist, and when you do flag one down to ask for something, it's down to luck as to whether you actually get it. Oh, and to add insult to injury, those three extra mini-tortillas cost me $1.99. It's really frustrating. The core here seems solid, and I really want to love this restaurant, but every time I leave, it's not satisfied but fed up and glad to be getting out the door. read more

I ordered online and called to inform them that someone else would be picking it up, before I could finish my sentence, I got yelled at, told they didn't have time for me, and they hung up on me. Unfortunately I have to downgrade my review. I've continued to experience poor service here. One time the waiter disappeared for 20 minutes while we waited for our check. I also had the same experience Regina W. had where a meal arrived with meat in it even though I ordered it vegetarian. I had to bring my plate downstairs to find someone to correct the issue. I tried my friend's Molote dinner empanadas that were vegetarian, and they were bland and dry. There are still a few decent things like the chile rellenos, corn tortillas, and beans but it's not my first choice. read more

Overall, it was ok. Not bad, not great, just ok. I was excited to try this place and read some great reviews, but having a place right near where I live that is incredibly authentic and delicious- and makes every other Mexican restaurant seem bland. I was definitely disappointed that they seemingly didn't have a liquor license, as the margarita was an agave wine cocktail- but it was pretty good. Overall, food was fine, not great. I wasn't blown away. Chips and salsa were tasty. Tinga (spicy chicken) in dishes was somewhat flavorful. Like I said, I wasn't blown away. I would probably try a different place next time I'm in Bloomington so I have a comparison (and definitely somewhere that serves hard liquor). read more

I am lost, I am ruined, I may never be able to enjoy one of those other Mexican places again! I fear their doors will be shut up for me as firmly as Chinese takeaway or fast food after eating at Juannita's. I just returned from lunch where I ordered a variety plate, expecting to eat half of it and be satisfied but not much more. It was all unexpected rather than routine and delightful. I gobbled every bite! How could I have let this place be on the pass-it-by of my day for so long? You must go in and order anything with Juannita's mole sauce! I am sincerely afraid to bring my wife. We often eat out at the easy to find Mexican places which are all over our town and most other Midwest towns. If she eats here she also may never be so easily satisfied again. What's a guy to do? It is off the main routes but packed at lunch which will tell you something too. I was so impressed I tried the flan for dessert. It was tasty and smooth in texture but much firmer than I am used to. So I am cogitating that. I may well have to try it again, but there are other things to sample and I am going back to try them. read more
