Traveling through Bloomington and spotted this cantina near the city square. Great variety of tacos to choose from, all of which were delicious. I especially liked the Americano which is similar to your basic ground beef taco, but so much tastier. Margaritas were also good. Atmosphere was modern, but warm. We stoped here on the way back from the Marengo Caverns. We didn't know what to expect as we were looking to go to a neighbouring Mexican restaurant which was closed. We were greatly surprised. The house margarita menu was expansive, they had a Saul's and chip plate with four options, and their house tacos were excellent! I highly recommend the shrimp street corn one it's to die for! Only one complaint, floors are sticky! But it's a college town so I'm not yelling! A great place to relax and enjoy good food! read more

Although I had a bad experience several years ago, I've been back to this location numerous times and it's been enjoyable. The sound can sometimes get a little loud inside the restaurant but that's because it's a favorite spot for IU undergrads. Inside the restaurant is really nice. They can seat parties of one or two and up to a couple dozen or more. The food is always fresh and really good. I usually get fish tacos but this time decided to try their cheese enchiladas. The enchiladas were fantastic but the rice and beans were underwhelming. The beans almost taste like they came directly out of a can, flavorless and bland, but everything else was fresh. My son liked their chicken quesadilla but wasn't impressed with the ranch that came with it, though he usually loves ranch. Lunch "on the square" downtown B-town. Olivia my waitress is very prompt and on top of refills. I ordered the Korean bowl as a salad and also the guacamole and chips. They have excellent guacamole. The crunchiness of the fried chicken on the salad is perfect and all the crunchy vegetables to go along with it. Could've used a little more lettuce greens to make it a hearty salad. I wasn't sure about the fried egg, especially with the yolk running, but it really added another layer of flavor and uniqueness. The crunchiness of all the vegetables, the pickled carrots, the radishes, the cucumber adds a nice touch of crunch. If you're ever in Bloomington Indiana need to check this place out it's really good open till 11 AM Sunday through Thursday and 1 AM Friday and Saturday. I'm sure since it's a college town. I called in the afternoon to make sure the restaurant was going to be open until midnight, as posted on the site. I was told that yes they would be and I made reservations for 8 people at 10:45 pm post-show. When we got to the restauran, we were told they were closing early and had no record of the reservation. We had the most amazing experience at Social Cantina. We were in Bloomington for a week and we went three times. We usually ended up going late at night, a bit before closing, and all the servers were still so kind and accommodating and the quality of food never declined. Tacos were great, as were the bowls, but the standout dish was the nachos - definitely get them if you stop by, they were absolutely incredible. I was in town visiting my son and we went to Social Cantina for a late lunch. The entire place was empty, so we were the only customers. The staff were all friendly, the restaurant was very clean, and it had an interesting vibe. We ordered the chicken enchiladas, chips and queso, chicken verde bowl, the despacito bowl, shrimp bowl, fried avocado tacos, and shrimp and corn taco. Chips do not come complimentary, just an fyi. They did accidentally prepare two orders of chips and queso and did give us the second one for free. All of our meals were good but I wasn't blown away. Great drink menu with several types of margaritas. Be warned -- the Bee Sting is no joke! I love a spicy margarita, but it was almost too much for me (but still very good). The bartenders were fantastic -- terrific service, good drink recommendations, and even though they appeared to be pretty swamped (and barely old enough to be serving alcohol!), they kept their cool and were very friendly & professional the entire time. The food was delicious, and I had such a hard time deciding what to order because everything on the menu sounded so good. I was tempted by the tacos, but opted for the ahi tuna-stuffed avocado because it was something I've never seen on any other menu before. It was very good, but I do wish there had been a bit more tuna and less cream cheese. It seemed like more of a cream cheese-stuffed avocado than tuna-stuffed. I loved the ambiance of the bar and got a kick out of the 90s hip-hop music, even though it seemed a bit out of place for a Mexican restaurant. We ordered a second round of drinks to which she acknowledged, but then ignored our table until she brought the check without acknowledgment of the missing items. I have to start by saying the service was good. My work dinner companion had vegetarian fajitas. She said they were acceptable. I just don't think she was as hungry as she thought she was. I ordered three tacos and a side of beans with bacon . The tacos were Fried Avocado Taco, Pork Belly Taco, and shrimp verde taco. The shrimp taco was the best. The pork was the greasiest taco I've ever eaten. It left me needing about six napkins to clean up the mess. I would totally skip the fried avocado. It was not good. In California we fry avocados would like a tempura, crunchy light batter. That would be much better. It had far too much salsa on it and was difficult to except in flavor. The beans were tasty, but there was so much liquid and not quite enough beans. Not to mention it was a very small portion. read more

I have been to social many times and it has always been good. It wasn't until my visit last Thursday that I was prompted to leave a review and that is all because of our wonderful server Camille. She was absolutely amazing, she answered all of our questions, was prompt and very sweet. I really enjoyed my visit here. The owner is the son of an old coworker and this was my 2nd visit. It's located in Bloomington square and parking is pretty accessible. Today I noticed a garage around the block. There is some outdoor seating on a small shaded patio area. I was by myself and seated at a single high top table for 2 near the kitchen which was kinda loud. This would not have been my first choice as there are some high tops that have a booth on one side and are more comfortable. That's where I sat my previous visit and there were 8 empty tables there before getting to my table on the opposite wall. My guess was it was due to assigned sections so I just went with it. My server was super cheerful and we chatted about the beautiful weather. I got some chips and queso because someone at Buy IN conference recommended it today and I had a pineapple margarita on the rocks. They also bring a pitcher of water for the table. I did notice a variety of seasonal drinks listed on a board on my table but I didn't see it before I ordered. I had the stuffed avocado which is also what I had the last time. As soon as I saw it, I remembered how much I enjoyed it the first time. It's stuffed avocado with ahi tuna and cream cheese served over a bed of rice with a poco like relish and pickled onions. As I left I noticed more tables had filled in closer to 6pm. While I did hear the host say on the phone they don't take reservations, it is good for groups. There was a table of 8 near me and probably a table with 10-12 people at the front of the restaurant. Other than the kitchen being loud, it wasn't a really loud restaurant. This is a good Mexican place in a great location in Bloomington. It's on the square. It is NOT the most authentic place, but it's still good. I got the Chicken enchiladas and chips with two salsa. The chips were great. The mango habanero salsa was amazing. The other salsa was a basic salsa rojo and it's honestly tasted like pasta sauce. The restaurant had an extensive list of margaritas too. My New Year's resolution was actually to make it a goal of trying one new restaurant each month this year. I have all of my restaurants picked out and Social Cantina was my January restaurant ! That being said... Neither I or my partner were impressed. When we walked in, their were 4 people standing or sitting at the host stand - 3 of which were on their personal phones and none of which greeted us. I finally made eye contact with one of them and they began to seat us. The seat we were at was sort of awkward? It was in an open part of the room that definitely seemed to be getting overlooked. The floor needed a sweeping and there was food particles on the menus we were handed. It took several minutes for anyone to come over to take our order. So long that we actually started to wonder if we weren't supposed to go to the bar to order ourselves. My partner and I both ordered two tacos and an order of chips and queso. I got the Baja taco and the carne asada. I actually think it was nice that I was able to order my tacos individually. Our tacos came out first and actually pretty quickly. Which was surprising when all of our tacos were slightly over room temp. The flavor of my tacos were really good - the only thing I faulted was the temperature. My partner said his tacos were too full of stuff that they couldn't be eaten like a taco. He also said the proportion of meat to toppings was unbalanced. We were done with our tacos before the server came back to let us know he hadn't rung in our nachos and if we "still want them". I nodded my head - what a dumb question. When we got our queso, it was very delicious ! It was hot and the flavor was amazing. It's the only thing that I felt was "impressive" about Social Cantina. But how hard is it to mess up a queso? Definitely would have expected the server to check our table more than twice. They weren't even that busy compared to the amount of staff on the floor. For this to be on a college campus, I really enjoyed coming here! I was down at IU for a conference, and wanted a great meal to end the night. My friends and I stopped in and were seated quickly for it being Friday. Our server was very nice, and she was helpful. We ordered a few appetizers, and the queso was the star of the show. It had a spicy kick to it and the chips seemed to be house made with a kick to them as well. Not sure what seasoning they use but it's really good. I ordered the steak nachos and boy they were huge. But all of the toppings along with them were just perfect. I've been meaning to try this place in another location and definitely will after this experience. Notes: The water here is terrible. Lol. We decided to sit outside for a better breeze and it was nice. The chips & salsa were pretty basic but not bad. They had different salsa choices and the guacamole was good. We got the jalapeño Relleno for an appetizer & it was good. It was very rich in flavor so one was plenty. It came with your choice of four or eight. My sister got the cantina salad bowl with chicken. Ingredients were fresh and she enjoyed it. I got the steak carnita taco & it was delicious. I also got the chicken tinga taco and I liked it okay. Steak was the way to go for me on this one. Our server got lost quite a few times which only started to get aggravating once it was long past due for the check & the door. Just a blah kind of experience.
