Oh boy, I sure do love Taiwanese style shaved ice! When I found out about this little gem right near where my colleagues and I were having dinner, I told them it was a must! I typically like the traditional red bean topping, but opted for some fresh fruit instead. Mango, strawberries, condensed milk, and a scoop of coconut ice cream all nestled upon a bowl of finely shaved ice. YUM! Continuing our crazy fat-fest weekend, after the Malaysian/Singaporean food fair, we moved on to Juice Box for dessert. My friends insisted I save room for fruit with shaved ice. Now, I'm no newbie to shaved ice (we have our own Filipino version, Halo-halo, and I was a Star Snow Ice junkie), but they promised that THIS would blow my mind. And that, it did. Come 11:15A, 1 one of their workers were standing outside waiting for the owners to come and open. I went around to the surrounding stores and came back around 11:30A, and they still weren't open. 11:45A, they finally unlocked the doors, but their sign outside was still on the "closed" side. My cousin and I finally just decided to pull on the door to see if they were open. When we entered, we were their only customers, yet none of the workers acknowledged our presence until 2 minutes later. We wanted some of the shaved ice desserts and a juice, but their juice girl didn't arrive until 10 minutes or so after us. Juice Box's customer service is amazingly horrible, but their desserts are actually very delicious and is the perfect amount for what I paid for. Because the pictures just didn't match the taste. --- --- --- While we were in Korea Town, I wanted to grab something unique for dessert, and Juice Box seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. Juice Box is delicious. If you're coming in peak times, prepare for a line, although it moves pretty fast. The signature dessert is the Fruit Shaved Ice, which is a few fruits (generally watermelon, pineapples, strawberries and mangoes) that top shaved ice and ice cream. It's a cheap dessert at $5 and filling enough for two (or three). They also have mixed smoothies here. Each comes with a shot of syrup, so the healthiness is a little stunted. I'd recommend going towards the actual fruits (such as watermelons) rather than the purees/juices (such as orange) if you're getting a smoothie. If you're feeling especially brave, try mixing one with Chinese yogurt or Calpico (a Chinese milk derivative). Absolutely delicious. read more

My only complaint is that the shaved ice freezes the fruit so it can become hard before you can eat it all. But that's just being picky. The choices of fruit and combinations of them are almost endless. Take your time to look over the menu pretty good before you choose. Small, medium or large sized. They run about $6-7 each. The place also offers fresh green teas, juices, smoothies, wheat grass and some other juice bar items...even coffee. Life changing. This place is my favorite mid day or even late night snack spot for when I am feeling in the mood for something sweet, refreshing and cold. They have a bunch of things here but they are best known by their heavenly bowls of curated fruits of your choosing topped with ice cream of your choice all sitting on a bed of shaved ice doused in condensed milk and lord knows what else. We always get the large which comes with 5 choices of fruit and choice of ice cream flavor. They also serve tapioca milk teas and smoothies. I've only tried two shaved ice places in Houston--Nu Cafe and Juice Box, but so far I've been rather disappointed with the quality. Juice Box calls for 7 dollars for a pretty generous mountain of snow and fruit, all topped with a scoop of ice cream. The one I tried was this fruit medley shindig, and it looked absolutely decadent. The ice was hidden by piles of fruit adorning the sides--mango, watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, and pineapple. A dollop of strawberry ice cream perched precariously on the top. Then to round off it all off, streams of condensed milk ran rivulets all over this snow mountain. So much yassss. However, I was greatly saddened to taste that the ice was very, very gritty and chunky, not that smooth, fluffy-like texture that I loved in Taiwan. (Please, let's be honest though, no place compares to Taiwan's shaved ice kingdom.) It was hard to mix the condensed milk and ice together to sweeten it up, so I relied heavily on the ice cream to blend with the ice. The ice and the fruit didn't really complement each other like they're supposed to. So despite the beautiful presentation, the actual dessert itself was not admirable due to the lackluster ice. Over the years this place has offered consistent quality and taste. Walking in, the smell of fresh fruit will blast your senses. There is a display of the fruits they use: strawberries, mangoes, .. I have mixed feelings about this place... The shaved ice/snow ice here is amazing! I had a mango peach snowflake ice and it was sooooo good. The ice is flavored and it tasted really really fresh and fruity (I've had snow ice before at a different place and there was definitely a world of difference). You can tell they make the ice out of fresh fruits instead of with powder like most places -- 10/10 would recommend. It was around $6.50 and came with 3 toppings which is a little pricey but I think a fair price for the quality you get! On the other hand, my friend ordered a cone of matcha ice cream from them and it was the worst green tea ice cream I've ever tasted in my life. I don't know how old that ice cream was but it definitely tasted like spoiled milk. I hope this was just a fluke but I would advise people to stay away from ordering their ice cream (they probably don't switch it out very often because it's not that popular anyways). They're sweet, but the fruit kind of tempers the sweetness of the ice cream and condensed milk. I can never decide on whether to have Juice Box or Gelato Cup. I usually alternate between them, but since Gelato Cup has stopped making new flavors, Juice Box is my new go to dessert place in Chinatown. Their shaved ice is perfect for summer. It's way better than Star Snow Ice. For one thing the ice doesn't clump together and turn into a block of ice. I've noticed at Star Snow when you get to the bottom of your shaved ice, there's a solid block of ice waiting for you. Not really what I'm looking for in shaved ice. I used to love Juice Box when I first discovered it while in town visiting family and friends, but now that I've visited quite a few other shaved ice shops I can only say that the shaved ice dessert here is just okay. I love that they load up the bowls with plenty of fruit which is unlike many other places who can tend to be a bit skimpy. Their shaved ice is flavorless and without the condensed milk and scoop of ice cream I'm pretty sure it would just be ice. It would be great if the shaved ice itself had flavor like Nu Cafe. It would be perfect loaded with all the fruit! There's also different teas and other beverages you can order, but I've personally only tried a wheat grass shot from here, and I'm not even sure if they still offer them. It was very earthy tasting, and honestly it may not be for everyone. It is definitely a health shot though! The inside is small, but there's still plenty of tables with seating available, and it's been fairly clean each time I've visited. The staff has always been friendly. They ball the melons and cut the other fruits into bite size pieces. When you come to Juice Box, don't expect anything will wow you, or particularly stand out. It is what it is- a vast array of juices, smoothies, shaved ice, and teas. We ordered the mixed fruit tea, and asked for no cantaloupe or bananas. Unfortunately our message did not seem to get through, because we found cantaloupe in our shaved ice. The cantaloupe were fresh, juicy, and good- so no loss there. We were pleasantly surprised by the gargantuan amount of fruit toppings/ice cream. You can see from the picture this was a shaved ice mountain. While the ice cream was good, fruits were fresh, it was the shaved ice that was disappointing. Some shaved ice places ( like Nu Cafe, most recently) will shave the ice so finely, that the shaved ice is smooth and softer in texture (and more pleasant to eat). However, their shaved ice was like eating ice cubes straight up. It caused some "ice fatigue,"and we had to stop a couple times because we were getting head freezes. The fruit tea was packed with fruits, but the entire drink lacked an integrated and full taste. We've had better of both. Perhaps we should just stick to the juices or smoothies next time. read more
