About three years ago I hired CC's Rainforest to install a new irrigation system prior to having…read morenew sod installed. The irrigation system was installed and within a week I noticed that I had dry areas where the irrigation system did not provide adequate coverage. I called about the dry areas and a technician (P) came to my home and moved one sprinkler head the result of which was the creation of a new dry zone. As time passed I noticed that my water bills were extremely high. After talking to neighbors who have similar sized lots with irrigation systems, I discovered that my water bills were on average a $100+ dollars higher than theirs--despite similar run times. Part of the reason for this is the three 360 degree sprinkler heads that require twice as much run-time in order to deliver the need amount of water to their respective areas, but still this couldn't account for the vast difference in water usage between me and my neighbors. Fast forward to 2019: June and July have had so much rain fall that the irrigation system has not been needed, but I still received $150+ water bills from Citrus County Utilities (CCU). After contacting CCU about the water bill they suggested steps to determine if I had a leak. After turning off the water to my residence I noticed that my water meter was still turning. Next I located the irrigation system shutoff valve box. The box was full of water and had been for so long that is was full of roots. I dug up the box to discover that a used, thread-damaged metal check valve had been installed in my system. The metal valve could not have been damaged during installation as it was attached to a PVC threaded adapter. The valve had apparently been leaking (spraying) from two separate areas since installation or shortly thereafter. After replacing the the section that included the valve and a hodgepodge of adapters, I examined the removed valve only to discover that not only were the threads on the valve damaged, but the union contained only a partial o-ring. This leak has cost me hundreds if not a thousand dollars.
