Food is still good, as always. Still really like their Shoyu Poke Nachos. I usually don't eat out just coz it's pretty pricey. So when I am willing to buy more, it means it's really good. Recent months I would order 2 sets of Shoyu Poke Nachos (coz the poke ahi is really fresh!) and I'd request 1 set for the poke ahi and chips to be separated / put on the side ( to save it for the evening without wanton chips turning soggy.) But the aunty hasn't seem to appear too happy nor friendly with me asking for that so I haven't really look forward to buy it too much now when their food truck comes. :( I would see her laughing and being nice to other customers. Makes me nervous now when I buy from her. You know how after a long morning of work, you look forward the whole week, and just wanna enjoy the food you really like? But then as the paying customer, you also feel nervous for making a reasonable request that seems to piss the owner off? Huge Bummer. Maybe it's just me. There's always an uncle working quietly in the background and I truly appreciate him making effort to separate it for me. Maybe they can charge extra for requests like that? I would be willing to pay for it without the extra seeming unhappy attitude. :( Probably the last time I'd get from them. :( read more

The first time I visited them was at the UH Manoa campus, I had a limu poke nacho bowl, only because the spicy ahi was sold out. The ahi was fresh and the nachos were crispy (except the bottom pieces which soaked up the shoyu from the poke seasonings). I like that it came with toppings (can't remember what, it was a few weeks ago) and looked pretty. I do remember thinking it was quite salty though, and a tad pricey. But then it's fresh ahi. Today, at the SOEST Open House also on campus, I got the large shave ice with watermelon, root beer, and lemon lime. It was $5 for a large and $4 for small, so it's a no-brainer which one I got! The ice was shaved fine and the syrups taste light, not crazy sweet, and seemed homemade. (But I don't know if they make their own syrups or not.) It was the perfect treat for a sweltering day. My only gripe is the wait... wait to order, wait for food. I understand most days it's just the two aunties in the truck-- one to make the food/bowls and the other to take the order and payment. The Aunty in the front is ALWAYS very patient and smiley, and I really appreciate that, imagining how hot and back-aching it must be standing all day in the truck. They also usually have local music playing in the background, which helps set the mood, I guess!! I might try their $5 quesadilla specials some time, if I go early enough and there's no line. read more

I was on my own for a day of exploring and hiking while in Honolulu. I'm not a shopper so headed out to the Lanai Lookout and keep going to walk to the lighthouse at Makapu'u (great walk, add that to your list too). I didn't take water but remembered seeing some food trucks by one of the beaches on the way. I decided to reward myself if I saw a Shave Ice truck, there it was! Only my second shave ice, I asked them about their Tweety, a mixture of pineapple and Li Hing, which I'd never heard of. She was surprised when I ordered it, with adzuki beans, and even more surprised when I loved it. Li Hing is a local favorite and now mine. Perfect treat and the beans made it lunch! read more

I'm not sure if this is the Hawaiian Shaved Ice truck we saw there at Sandy beach, next to the coffee vendor and Leilani's taco truck (?) The sign simply stated Hawaiian Saved Ice and it was a cool vendor playing cool music and very laid back. And it was actually a van with the ice making equipment. He does it right in front of you and had a few flavors to choose from, one being the blue vanilla, I couldn't decide so he made me a rainbow. YUM! it was large, and very delicious He told me to start eating it as it was going to melt fast and the syrup would slowly drip though the freshly shaved ice. $5 bucks and you leave with a smile and a couple walked right by me and looking, I saw she got the rainbow too!! I think he said they had bubble teas too. I hope this is the right truck van I saw that day at Sandy Beach. Last week I decided to take my family to a different beach for a change. We decided on a change of scenery, from our usual drive to the North Shore. That was the best decision we made! First of all, the drive to Sandy Beach was beautiful, but.....the highlight of the day, was when we decided to stop, & check out this food truck, that was parked just past Sandy Beach. My reason for wanting to stop there was to buy a shaved ice (I saw the stickers on the truck from far, so I knew they sold shaved ice). So I ordered a shaved ice, & honestly, that was the BEST shaved ice I ever tasted! I lived in Hawaii all my life, so I know what's good, fine shaved ice! I had a large rainbow (strawberry, banana, vanilla), w/ice cream. It was the bomb! I found out they make their own flavors. No wonder the flavors had so much taste! When my kids saw that they sold other things besides shaved ice, they forgot all about ordering shaved ice. My son ordered a "Spicey Ahi Bowl" (of course, his favorite food), & my daughter ordered a "Açaí Bowl". They both were very happy with what they ordered. In spite of the drive, we all agreed that we'd have to come back here regularly just for the shaved ice & food!
