This spot has been on my radar for quite a while. I knew them from various markets that they attend along with their brick and mortar location in Kalihi. They were at the semi annual Honolulu Night Market in Kaka'ako so I finally took up the opportunity to try them out. I got the real taro smoothie, emphasis on REAL (i hate fake, powdered taro). I had the option of grass jelly or boba and I asked for a mix of both. The drink was delicious, creamy and thick. It was a bit pricey ($9) but minimal compared to some of the other prices out here. I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to visit their brick and mortar but they'll def be my go to drink option at a market. read more

You must check out this cool truck!! The vibe of Milky Way Hawaii Ice certainly blends perfectly in the vibrant Pow Wow filled SALT neighborhood as it's cute colorfully bug-eyed characters immediately captures your attention and draws you in. It did start in Kaka'ako right along Mother Waldron park though now they seem to branch out into downtown because I asked about their randomness as I came on Thursday but they weren't there yet on this Tuesday they were as it's usually Downton I guess though since it was a Federal Holiday (July 4th) most business were closed so they decided to park in the usual which I lucked out on! Walking around downtown wanting something sweetish and stumbled upon this truck parked on Bishop Street across from the Pacific Guardian Center. I've seen their truck parked around Kakaako many times, but usually I'm in my car (it's hot out) and I just drive right on by. Often times I already have a drink with me too. I finally got the chance to try it as they are now parked in downtown on Bishop Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I found them parked right behind Dos Jefes which was perfect. I could pick up a drink while I waited for my tacos. I skipped my coffee this morning so I decided to try the Amber Boba Milky Tea. I like that the sign tells you what drinks are dairy free. Makes it easier to decide what to get. And I was interested in trying the "#best boba" haha. Although I'm not sure it was the BEST boba I've had, the boba was pretty good. Sweet (but not too sweet) and good level of chewiness. Although not advertised, I was told you could ask for less sweet (for the drink I got at least) but I actually think it was a good amount of sweetness. As for the tea itself, it was interesting. It wasn't as rich as some other milk teas - probably since it was dairy-free, but I liked it. It reminded me of the milk tea I had when I was a kid, spending summers in China. Overall I'm happy with my drink. Milk tea can be a little heavy for me sometimes, but this one was pretty light but still hit the spot as far as milk tea goes. I've been eyeing this place out for a while now especially after passing the drink truck multiple times. And finally, I got the chance to check it out after work with a friend! It's located on the street next to Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park and close to Fisher's Hawaii on Pokhukaina St. Theres street parking all around and won't be a problem to find unless an event happens nearby. I was stuck between choosing the mango snowthie and the taro snowthie as both of them seemed delicious. But I was feeling for a not-so-sweet option that day. I asked the worker (owner?) and chose the taro snowthie. And this was actually a great decision because the drink wasn't too sweet, really creamy, and really really delicious! I enjoyed it a lot! Strong taro flavor (not the artificial kind either) and was really thick as it was a snowthie (believe it's snow ice mixed in as a drink) compared to a regular smoothie. My friend got the Amber Boba Milky Tea which wasn't too sweet (she'd rather have it sweeter) and the boba was really soft and chewy. This is a drink truck but it has quality drinks. Nice spot with some slightly different offerings than your typical boba spot! I'd say that the snowthies are more like desserts...so plan accordingly. My mom actually went here on my recommendation, and I got raving texts from her...in fact, we went back two more days in a row. The favorites were the taro snowthie and the mango snowthie, which are the featured fruit layered with a snow combination. I actually found that mixing the two together was the key to getting a really good flavor combination, as you need the sweetness from the shaved milky ice to add to the fruit/taro. The boba milk tea is dairy free, so your vegan friends have options too. I have to be in the mood for this place, which is why I didn't give a full five stars, but they have quality refreshments that are different than what your standard boba shop provides. Tucked away on the streets of kakaako, I never would have known about this place if it wasn't for my friend who is a milk tea connoisseur. There is ample street parking all over so it wouldn't be hard to find a spot to grab a quick drink. The mango snowthie was tasty and tasted like a mango milk. They put some kind of mango juice/ syrup and shave milk into the cup. You stir the whole drink when you're ready to drink and it mixes the mango and "snow" together to make a delicious blended mango medley. The man working was very nice and polite and attentive to us. We got a call from my BIL, the kids were missing their cousins and wanted a play date. We agreed to meet in Kakaako. It had been raining off and on all day, but it got considerably warmer as the afternoon progressed. My BIL graciously treated us all with some delicious cold refreshments from Milky Way, a cute and colorful food truck parked at the corner of Mother Waldron park at the corner of Pohukaina and Cooke Streets. What is a Snowthie? Before today, I never even knew such a thing existed! It is a fruit smoothie with ice cream snow on top. The strawberry was the first one I tried... yummy and refreshing on a hot day for sure. But then I tried the mango... wow o wow! I looove Mango so much, and its usually reserved as a summertime treat for me, so imagine my surprise at how fresh and flavorful this mango snowthie was... there are even the fibers of the fresh mango blended in there! The name 'snowthie' (I mean, how cute is that name?) is what caught my attention, but the delightfully sweet and refreshing drink is what will keep me coming back. A snowthie is like a smoothie, ice cream, and shaved ice came together to create the most magical drink in the universe. Maybe that's where the name Milky Way came from because these wonderful things we have come to know and love banded together to create this haze of enjoyment that you get engulfed in until the last sip. I tried the Strawberry Man, which I highly recommend! It's a combination of the strawberry snowthie and mango snowthie. They pair so well together! It's topped with shaved cream (a hybrid of ice cream and shaved ice) to give it that IG worthy look. The workers will tell you to take your picture first and then mix it all together before drinking. I have to admit...that shaved cream took me by surprise. It looks fluffy like snow, but when you dig into it you'll find that it's much firmer (like ice cream almost) than you'd think. I initially wanted to try this place because of the aesthetic of their adorable truck parked next to Mother Waldron Park in Kaka'ako and their insta-worthy colorful drinks. Little did I know that their Amber Boba Golden Milk (M size, $5.50) would become my new favorite brown sugar boba milk! I've always been a huge fan of It's Tea's OBS Milk because it was so creamy, and this drink is now tied for first on my list! The milk itself is super rich, and the brown sugar flavor rips through that creamy milk flavor and bursts inside your mouth without being overly sweet. The boba is also insanely super soft and chewy, and I love that they top it with the snow ice, because it gives it a change of texture depending on which part you drink haha. I can't stress how amazed I was with my drink. I also got to try the Mango Snowthie (regular, $5) and because I drank it when we were all impatient and the snow ice didn't completely soften yet, it was a little tough to drink. The mango flavor was definitely super strong and refreshing. the Grass Jelly Milky Tea ($4.50) is a dairy-free milk tea that has crushed grass jelly floating on the top! It tasted like the canned Ito-En milk teas - just a little on the sweet side and not a suuuuper strong tea flavor, but still good! The grass jelly wasn't as soft as other places, and stayed at the top instead of floating to the bottom, making it hard to drink. Overall it was a good drink but we'd probably pass on this one the next time. Ran into this truck on my way to Fisher Kakaako. Its within walking distance parked on the street by the public park. It was the perfect time for a boba and no line, so why not? With any new place I would go for a classic MT to get a feel of their basic but I saw taro and def wanted to try something new. I liked that the drink had a lot of texture. There were the taro bits and maybe like shaved ice flakes. Not uber sweet and good taro flavor. What caught my eye walking by was a man getting the pineapple dessert which had this fluffy heavenly look white snow ice with pineapple scooped balls and other goodies in it. He made it looked so good I had to stop by and try something. As soon as I was ordering a line already formed of about 5 people, this place is really popular, and for good reason! I got the grass jelly milk tea that's made with oolong tea. The tea flavor was really present and didn't just taste like sugary milk! I think for next time I'd get the sweetness adjusted to be a little less sweet but the overall taste was super yummy! It's also dairy free, (which getting older anything lactose free is better haha). Walked in to the the establishment, no line, I approached the counter waiting while two employees tended to an order they were preparing. A customer walks in and proceeds to talk to the employee and then cut in front of me to pay for her order. Wow! I was confused, what was going on. I personally thought that was rude. If she preordered, like any other establishment, she'll have to get in line to pay for her order, but no! I made a remark about it, and she turned around and said, "I'm sorry, I had a big order". Ok, this would have been fine, if the employee (s) took the time to acknowledge me and simply say, " Ma'am, I will be with you, let me take care of this customer". Nothing! Pretty much, this is an absolute turn off for me in any establishment. Period! Milk tea with jelly: customers should be asked what sweet level they like, this was super sweet. The frozen pineapple bowl really made a difference in keeping my the shaved treat from melting so fast. He offers 6 items... 2 frozen treats and 4 drinks. Next time, I want to try the milky mango drink. He has a taro and boba drink too. Wondering how I was going to manage carrying the pineapple shaved treat and lemon drink to my car, he was so nice to suggest and offer to carry my drink to my car so I can start enjoying my shaved treat. Such great service! The Lemon tea had 4 slices of lemon (just about a whole lemon) with some aiyu jelly inside. The drink was a nice complement to my frozen treat. The pineapple shaved (pineapple/milk) ice was so light and refreshing topped with frozen pineapple balls. It's not shaved ice with pineapple syrup but shaved ice made from fruit mixed with milk. With all the hullabaloo about boba drinks around town, it's really hard to pick which is my favorite. I lied. Milky Way Hawaii Ice is my favorite. I think I not only like it because every drink I've had there is so delish. But, because it's just simple. You order from their pictures and what you see is what you get. AMAZING. I needed a quick pick me up and was lucky enough to find a parking spot right behind the truck. Curiosity led me to try the Milky Taro with grass jelly. They make it blended like a shake with real taro. You can also tell it's real cause it's not masked by a bunch of sweeteners. The grass jelly is various shapes and sizes so I feel like that shows it's made fresh to instead of just store bought and processed. Highly recommend, next time I want to come back and try one of the smoothie/snow ice combos or the boba teas. Parking can be tricky since it's at Salt, but it's worth it. read more

I was thinking long and hard if I wanted to go against the grain in a sea of 5 star reviews, but I think this place is a solid 3.5 stars. Not bad, but it's not my go to favorite either. They're a food truck located in kakaako (behind fishers) and parked next to a park. There's a lot of street/metered parking available and I think it was $3/hr. My coins barely got me anything but I was quick! They have a pretty small menu and I decided to try the strawberry smoothie on a hot summers day. While it was good, it was also dehydrating for me to drink. I wish I had some water too with it. The pricing isn't all that bad and they do take credit cards too. Not sure if I'll be back since it's a little out of my way and the hours only work for me if I'm off work. read more

Milky Way - Hawaii Ice is a food truck focused on doing milk tea/boba slushies. They're not quite ice cream but also not quite shave ice. Milky Way is something in the dangerous middle. A - dare I say - cosmic category of its own. Oh and throw some boba with it! Their milk tea ice is fragile, truly light snow consistency instead of honking chunks of ice. When the snow falls off the spoon it floats. They have a good variety of flavors from your classic Milk Tea to things like a Vitamin C cup (apple, strawberry).
