Very strange place…read more We were looking for a gymnastics place since my daughter expressed interest in returning to a gymnastics class now that things are open again. The closest ones to us are Bayshore Elite and this place, and Bayshore Elite had no spots for her age. My husband and I visited this place in person since we happened to be in San Carlos for shopping to understand their classes / signup process better, since the website didn't have a schedule of when the classes would be (of course, if the days of the week / time doesn't work for us, we can stop considering it). The facility is in downtown SC. They don't seem to let people in through the actual storefront address, so you go through this somewhat creepy alley attached to either a hotel or apartment complex and end up at their back entrance which is apparently where parents drop their kids off. I was appalled - the area is gated by a chain link fence and a badly maintained tarp, and looked like a garbage dump that I felt very leery about leaving my child at. I asked the adults in charge (coaches I guess?) who I could speak to about classes and they directed me to a grumpy woman who was very standoffish and flat out rude. She insisted that we had to sign their waiver before we could take a look at the facility (for general cleanliness, ventilation, upkeep), which was beyond odd since we were not getting on the equipment or trialing a class. Ok - I then requested a schedule so I could see if their classes even work for us. I don't know if she assumed we were suspicious people because we didn't have our child with us at the moment, but she then told us to go to the front of the building to get let in. Then, while we stood in front of the building as directed, she stood at the front desk not doing anything and proceeded to ignore us for over 10 minutes. I understand the concern for safety of children, but as a business owner, she could have also answered our question about class scheduling and with COVID still a concern, I definitely want to make sure any facility doing close contact sports is clean and has decent air quality - even before my child comes here for any evaluation. In fact, I'm curious what they were hiding by not letting us see the facility in person. Well, only because pickings are slim in the Bay Area for any child activity spots, and worse since COVID, I get home, get on their website, and grudgingly complete their waiver which asked for tons of info that I wasn't dying to give out if I didn't know whether I wanted to even engage further with this place. We didn't hear back beyond that, after they collected all our info. Hell, I also filled out the evaluation form to see if I could get her evaluated and again, didn't hear back. Anyways, rude staff, bad condition and SMALL facility, and I honestly wish the peninsula had better options closer to home.

They promote camps for school-age children in the city/community activity brochures but be aware - it's supposed to be a camp, not daycare for infants. School-age children could learn much more even at home than commuting to this designated location for free play all day. This is completely contradicting the camp description and misleading parents to spend all the extra time for commuting/packing for a productive camp.

It's held mostly at Sacred Heart's campus, but also at Burgess field. Coaches are super receptive to each individual child, coaxing them out into the fields and getting them to play (and patiently eat their lunch :D ) Alex's other highlights of camp include Joe's Friday BBQ (ALSO my favorite day of the week where I don't have to prep food), baseball cards for good behavior and special toys on Friday. We can't wait to return to this camp, I cannot rave about it enough!!!

But they also believe in winning and competing and as the kids get older the coaching gets more real. This is sports, after all, not finger painting. Our three sons have all had the privilege of being coached by Joe and his team and we are forever grateful. Our sons learned the value of teamwork, hard work and patience. They have learned how to win AND how to lose. Something kids these days are protected from for too long as they grow up. Joe will gently and lovingly push them to excel. Hi Five also coaches multiple school teams at Hillview Middle School in Menlo Park to the point where parents are fighting over who gets to have Joe as coach. In the 2021-2022 season at Hillview, two of his basketball teams won their respective Menlo Park City Championships.

Short version: This club operates like a money making machine, not a place focused on developing…read morekids. I strongly recommend avoiding it. Long version: My son spent a year with this club. It was his first club experience, so we did not realize how subpar it was until we joined another program. Now the differences are obvious. The fees are almost double what other local clubs charge, and on top of that, they add extra charges for basic items, including renting equipment like a tent for $60, which we could have purchased for the same price. It felt excessive and unnecessary. Coaching was another major issue. It was inconsistent and disorganized. The coaches at practice were often different from the coaches at games, and sometimes a completely unfamiliar coach would show up on game day. One coach even ignored my son when he told him he was a defenfer and put him in as an attacker anyway, which was frustrating and confusing for everyone. The team also struggled to maintain a consistent roster. There often were not enough players, so practices were combined with groups of much younger or much older kids, which is not helpful for skill development. After seeing how a well run club operates, I genuinely regret spending a year here. I wish we had made the switch sooner.

We felt uncomfortable and complained to the coach. (We understand they have more students on waiting list, but we chose this academy because we want our small pod to train together and we have a full class) They separated kids into two groups and had one coach for each group for the rest of our classes. The owner came at last session and asked parents to understand they are non profit. They pay low so their staff won't reply our complaint online timely.( we complained a month ago and didn't hear anything back yet.) The owner said their coaches don't like to teach little kids. So they are losing coaches because of kids born after 2017. ( So our fault to sign up for 4 year-old? Why did you take 4 year-old in the first place?) And owner said they never promised not to add students. (This class is 4-6 students. Each session $45 if 4 students and $35 if there are 6 students. Why do you add students to a full class without parents' permission?) The owner kept saying they didn't start this non profit organization to make money and asked parents to understand them. It's none of our business. We want a small, steady pod which is what they advertised. That's it. Nothing about the coaches. Coaches are nice. Very bad organization. Owner didn't apologize. Just kept asking parents to understand. We don't think they will make changes based on what owner said. Never come back.

But what is really impressive is the fact that Coach trains her hard, yet fun, and after every session I ask my daughter what do you think? And she always says, I love it. Coach Mel is nice as can be and they all, the coaches, have impeccable resumes. It is by far, the best money I've ever spent on something like this. In the past I have wasted money on certain programs for my kids. And I mean wasted because the programs were just awful. Disorganized, dangerous even. Time and money I'll never get back. Torch is worth every minute, every penny.

At Torch there is emphasis on skill development of ball handling and shooting , basketball IQ, team work , integrity and hard work, not just winning. I believe it is because of that girls in the Torch team are such a wonderful role models. My daughter has evolved from a girl who enjoyed basket ball and good at it , to some one who truly loves it and hoping to play for college. Her growth as a basketball player ever since she started at Torch truly has been wonderful to watch. We drive from Saratoga to Atherton year round after school to be part of Torch and have not regretted it once .

If you multiply say 10 per age group by 2 for girls teams and times at lest 5 age brackets, you get a whole bunch of teams. For my 7 year old son, the experience was great. The coaches were great (two team mate's parents) along with the team mates, the administration of the program (practices and game logistics), etc. were all top notch. The positive impact on my son has really got him on a track to have a passion for the game for life.

I had to track them down to get anything out of them. They don't even apologize for giving out wrong information but have the audacity to be snarky that they are just volunteers. Life does not revolve around AYSO, we all have better things to do than chase down soccer info. you take my money but you cant even apologize for your own mistake?! done with you AYSO San Carlos.
