Started going to this place when I lived here in 2010-12. It's fantastic. After I left it went under new ownership (which I found out last time I ate here after not eating here in almost 13 years) and it's every bit just as good if not better than before. This is literally the only food review I've ever done on this app...it's possible there are a few others but I certainly haven't in over 10 years I'd thing. Anyways, do yourself a favor and eat here. This is a wonderful old school German/Austrian style restaurant. The type of place my German father sought out when I was young and it certainly brought me back. The potatoes on the side were made with German speck and taste exactly as I knew them. The portions were hearty and we all cleared our plates without question. While there's no dedicated children's menu, a standard schnitzel should satisfy most kids palates, mine loved the spaezel and the charcuterie board was devoured by adults and children alike. The breads are very European, such as rye. Not for everyone, but fresh and tasty. What I really appreciated here was the owner making his rounds, having conversations with his regulars, making new customers feel welcomed and keeping traditions alive. You don't get that so often anymore, it's more about creativity, fusion, new, ratings etc. This was a traditional experience with delicious food and I will definately be back. On my last visit to Vancouver, my sister mentioned this place in North Vancouver so we decided to try it one evening and I'm glad we did. Make sure you make reservations because this place gets packed often. Located off the main road of lower North Vancouver, the restaurant is decently sized however they fit a ton of tables in the space so you may be cozy with some other tables. Nevertheless, the staff was super friendly. Unfortunately on this evening we went, they were understaffed and we spent more time waiting for a server than we spent eating. We understood their situation and remained patient a they were polite and welcoming the entire time. Food was so good and every single part of the dishes had tons of flavour. The schnitzel was perfectly cooked and moist and the potatoes and cabbage were seasoned well. It was a decently large serving so I saved half for the next day. I have to admit, I liked my schnitzel better at Jägerhof than in Vienna. This is definitely a restaurant my family loves coming to because of the cosy and unique environment that makes you feel like you could be in a restaurant in Germany, Switzerland, or Austria. The schnitzel always comes hot, juicy and crispy. If I can, I'll always try to get the Spatzle or the red cabbage. Lately when I've been going, I've been ordering the dolce brusco schnitzel, because I really like the berry sauce that it comes with that just compliments, the schnitzel really nicely. I also really like the one that comes with mushroom sauce, which I believe is the hunter schnitzel Don't bother showing up on a weekend thinking you can get in without a reservation. Make sure you call ahead of time to make a reservation and not during their dinner service as they don't answer the phone then. Service is always wonderful despite how packed it is and they have a great selection of European wines and beers. The desserts are also pretty great. The only dish that I could use a bit of improvement is the beef roulade. I haven't had it in a while but it was a bit more dry than I had expected it the time I tried it. read more

The service was very good, the food was tasty but the music was too loud. And we were packed in very tightly. Thankfully, we were seated away from the piano ,otherwise we couldn't have carried on a conversation at all. Because of the volume, diners were speaking louder than normal. To have a special New Year's Eve dinner, we drove all the way out to the Jägerhof Restaurant in North Vancouver. The restaurant opened at 5 p.m. and by that time, where were already a throng of patrons waiting at the door, all whom had made reservations. As soon as I entered, I was enamored with this cute little German-style restaurant. It was almost like stepping back in time, compared with the temporary restaurants just next door. The boyfriend chose a specialized Smokey Beer that made me wish I had been smart enough to try that drink too. It was hard to describe, but tasted like Smoked Ham in a beer bottle (tastes better than it sounds). For the appetizer, we had the ALPINE CHARCUTERIE PLATE. A lovely shareable option for two people with bread, cheeses, two types of meats, a little bit of fruit, and butter and salt. For the entrée, the boyfriend chose the BEEF ROULADEN and I had the ZÜRICHER GESCHNETZELTES/CHICKEN ZURICHOISE. Neither was a dish we could pronounce, but our waiter had a good laugh with us and assured me that no-one could pronounce my chicken dish anyhow. It was an interesting choice of dishes, and I'm glad I didn't go a Schnitzel dish and tried something new. For dessert, we went with the house special: gingerbread cookies, eggnog ice-cream and hot chocolate sauce. I'm not a huge fan of eggnog, but I loved the gingerbread cookies (not too sweat) and warm chocolate sauce was a great accompaniment. One of the most memorable parts of the evening was the surprise: live music! We had two musicians arrive halfway through our meal and played Christmas and old timey songs. Having dined in many restaurants where patrons just eat and let the music play, it was heartwarming to see and hear the entire restaurant break out into applause after each song was finished. read more

Lots of choices for food, drinks, and desserts. Authentic food with good texture and taste. More restaurant style in terms of heavier and larger portion but I personally prefer more intimate and home style of Germany or European food where it's on the lighter side like The Tannenbaum in Westminster. Street parking around the area of this restaurant but can be very busy so do come 10-15 minutes earlier than your reservation. I came here for dinner last night with a friend. We waited a few minutes before the restaurant opened for dinner at 5pm, and although a line was already forming, we were the 2nd group to go in. The male staff member greeting people at the door asked us if we had a reservation and since we did not, he asked us to stand by the piano. The next group that came in was a Caucasian couple who were asked the same question, yet even though they did not have a reservation either, they were promptly seated. I don't know why we were treated any differently when it was the same exact situation. It was only upon getting the attention of one of the female staff members and letting her know that happened, that the host came back and finally gave us a table. He did not offer any apology or explanation for what had taken place earlier, but just took some floral decorations from the next table over and said "here's a flower for you." and set it down at our table. The food is decent but the lackluster service and microaggression that we experienced when we walked in was disappointing, and I probably will not be returning for some time as there are other restaurants in the area. read more

What a find! This small, family-run restaurant tucked between the towers of North Vancouver was a gem. Outstanding beer and wine list complemented the authentic German menu perfectly. What a super fun little German restaurant! We came here for dinner on a Saturday night and the place was jam packed with a live band. Tables are packed pretty tightly together, but the vibe is fun and it almost feels like you're in Germany. They have a pretty extensive list of German beers and the usual German fare. I thought the food was really good and portion sizes were decent. The sausage and jagerschnitzel dishes were fabulous and the mushroom sauce was delectable. I grew up in Germany as a kid, specifically in Bavaria. I've had a craving for good schnitzel and saw pictures on Yelp so we decided to come try this place and thankfully it did not disappoint. Delicious jagerschnitzel! The mushroom sauce is very creamy and reminds me of rahmschnitzel. I normally don't like red cabbage but this one was flavorful but not too bitter or vinegary. The fried potatoes were part crispy and soft, yum! We also had a Caesar salad and the croutons tasted homemade. My child devoured the bread, charcuterie board and a bratwurst. We also shared a slice of cheesecake. Wasn't fast enough to take pictures of anything except the schnitzel. read more

I have been coming to Jägerhof since before Chris took over a few years ago, and I am still coming in for excellent food. Since taking over, Christopher has cleaned the place up, as well as improved and expanded the menu. He is now offering a selection of dishes from Germany, Austria, and more. When you walk in, it feels like you're in Germany. The beer list is good, the menu looks good and even the music is ok. I ordered the cordon bleu schnitzel. It arrived in record speed. The portion was great! The flavour however was non existent. Salt and Pepper are not something they seemed to have thought of when cooking. It tasted like nothing. The best part were the potatoes on the side. I get that people phone in to make reservations or maybe place an order for pick up or delivery but the ring is so loud that it's disrespectful to those who are actually there to dine in. My husband and I found this place while looking up restaurants online and were so glad we did! He's lived in Switzerland and missed the food there so we gave this place a try. We called ahead to make reservations and were given the option to come at two different times since it wasn't super busy on a weeknight. We ordered the soup that was part of their special (French onion without the cheese) and it was great! We ordered a cup and the portion was more like a bowl. My husband ordered the Rosti with smoked salmon and I kept reaching for more of his rosti. I ordered the chicken dish with spatzle and the sauce was soooo delicious! I'd never had spatzle before and am not an adventurous eater but was pleasantly surprised. The place was so cozy we felt like we were in a quaint restaurant in Europe again. There were a group of German students eating and drinking there and we noticed the owner was speaking to them in German. Both he and the waitress were very kind and attentive. This is not light, trendy, or terribly convenient if you live "over town" (Vancouver and environs, in North Shore parlance). It is quirky, unique, and strangely romantic - if you're the kind of person who enjoys taxidermy and Wes Anderson films. The decor (and the service) are a source of endless conversation. Sometimes there is live polka music. the drink menu offers, among other things, a beer which professes to be the oldest beer in the world. I tried it, and subsequently decided to stick with beer from this century. The service is weird but charming, like the rest of the Jagerhof experience. Platters with a variety of German meat specialties are a great way to get acquainted with German cuisine. The Jagerhof does particularly well with sausages. The wine braised cabbage is richer and butterier than any other cabbage I've had. The breading on the schnitzel is perfectly light and crisp. Portions are extremely generous. If you somehow still have room for it, the chocolate mousse is light, intensely chocolately, and big enough to share. More old world charm than the other German places I've tried in Vancouver. Don't bring a vegetarian here if you're hoping for a subsequent date. Be sure to make a reservation, particularly for Friday or Saturday nights. read more

My boyfriend and I have been here multiple times. The atmosphere is amazing, the staff are all very friendly and easy going, and the food/ drinks are great. The small, warm and homey (if your home is in the Alps) local is at its best on a cold winter evening. The walls are lined with Bavarian bric-a-brack and live music plays many evenings and weekend lunches. The meals are home style Alpine and range from the more typical meat, cheese and sauerkraut dishes (but I strongly recommend side of red cabbage) to regional specialities like Rösti, Spatzle and more. I wish I could say I've tried a lot on the menu, but the truth is my favourites are the Jägerschnitzel (mushroom sauce) or if I'm really hungry the Schwienshaxe. The other items on the menu all look good, but by the time I leave home, I've already made up my mind and cannot be dissuaded. After walking past this place a million times and constantly meaning to try it I realised it would be the perfect place for a Christmas get together. With such a large group we have struggled previously to find restaurants that can accommodate us so I wasn't hopeful but when I rang to book the owner was very friendly and had no issues with our group size, we didn't even have to order a set menu (which I find often is not as enjoyable as being able to pick what you would like!) As soon as we arrived we knew we were going to have a wonderful evening, the welcome was incredibly friendly and they had some lovely live music (always a bonus!) The service was above and beyond, our server Magda was super lovely and attentive and did not seem phased by such a large group size one bit. The food came out in good time and everyone agreed it was all delicious. I could eat the spätzle every day!! At the end of the meal the owner Christopher came out to greet us all and explain his passion for the restaurant and made us feel even more welcome than we already did. Commuting from Burnaby to North Vancouver for some of Jagerhof's food is something I never blink about. I wish I could give this place more than five stars! This is a LITERAL hole in the wall. If you don't have your eyes peeled you may walk right past it. It is very small, but warm and welcoming inside. Due to its size and the quality of the food, reservations are recommended, as it can get crowded fast. All their portions are humongous, and everything I've tried is absolutely heavenly. Others I've spoken to said that this is some of the most authentic schnitzel they've found in restaurants outside of Europe - crispy and not greasy. My favorite is the Florentine schnitzel - cheese and spinach stuffed schnitzel with a cream sauce. Smooth, rich, indulgent, AMAZING. I can't describe it better than that, you just need to try. I even love their sauerkraut, which I've recoiled from in the past. If you come here in the winter months, make sure to have their gluh wine... but beware, as your bill will get very pricy as you'll be asking for more and more! read more

I went here for the first time. The place is very romantic. Well mannered waitresses. I ordered the Jagerhof platter. It was awesome. The pork was very delicious. The sausage was so good that I wish I had two of em in my plate. The fried potatoes were so tasty and lovely. I also liked the schnitzel alot. It was the best schnitzel I have ever had. Just wanted to touch on the reviews that are claiming the owner is homophobic and actively ripped down pride flags. The owner is such a genuinely nice human being. He wasn't aware it was pride week, and was taking down what he thought was debris in the trees outside his restaurant. He admits to losing his cool after being confronted, but so would I if I was ambushed by angry people accusing me of being homophobic without any idea why. He then went on to donate to to the North Shore Pride Alliance and has been decorating the trees and neighbourhood with Pride decor since. The people writing these hateful reviews about him were so quick to jump on the hate train, they didn't stop to try and understand the situation first. Shame on them. read more

Jagerhof changed ownership a few years ago. We've been back a few times since it used to be one of our favorite restaurants. The new owner is such a genuinely nice gentleman and the staff are very good. The menu has changed quite a bit and unfortunately for us we do not care for the changes. There used to be a more extensive menu and we personally found that we liked the food better under the former owners. The preparation and taste of the meals was just better. The other evening we shared the special appetizer - warm goat cheese with fresh basil, cherry tomatoes and crostini. It was delicious. For entrees my husband had the schnitzel cordon bleu and I had the Jager schnitzel. I liked the fact that they put the sauce in a little gravy boat so that the schnitzel did not get soggy. I found the schnitzel itself to be a bit tough and dry. There are other places that we enjoy more for German food so having tried Jagerhof a few times under the new management we would not return. They are a very busy restaurant so it is mandatory to make reservations. The pianist was playing the evening that we were there so it certainly is a nice accoutrement to the ambiance. read more

The quaint, old world charm of a standing piano, musical instruments and stuffed animal heads is more than overcome by the excellence of the service, food and beverages. The manager/ owner that night was a champion, never hesitated in extending every courtesy and offered a delightful experience.
