When we come to Vancouver we have to stop in at The Old Bavarian Haus in New Westminster. Thank goodness this place is still here and open. With covid protocols in place. To be truthful it's has been 28 years since we stepped foot in this restaurant. From my understanding it has changed ownership a few times since. We showed up for brunch on Sunday. We were greeted by a friendly server that sat us down. Inside still has that clean European atmosphere. We ordered two Schnitzel one with a wonderful mushroom sauce, veggies, spaetzle and a breakfast bacon & eggs. The food was good, just not what I remembered. I remembered my schnitzel being bigger. Little bit pricier this time around then I remember. LOL We did a lot of walking, so we did work up an appetite. I forgot to take a picture of the food, so that's a sign that it was good. Parking is limited the outside still looks the same. Should make reservations for evening dinner seating is limited. Will be back next time we get a chance.

Disappointing experience for breakfast. They had an intriguing menu but didn't quite land the execution. I had the potato cakes but they got my order wrong, forgetting the eggs. One of my companions ordered a croissant with egg and cheese but got a caprese croissant. The espinola was OK but lacking seasoning and salt. We ordered hot tea but it took 30 minutes before drinks arrived. Service was exceptionally slow and we were the only customers. That should have been a clue but we liked the setting and the music. Our waiter seemed new or maybe just unskilled.

Used to go to this restaurant as a regular customer and the service, the ambiance and the food was fantastic! Went back after the covid pandemic in 2021 and if you look in the reviews you'll find my review (2021/08/12) this once wonderful schnitzel restaurant was the best in all the lower mainland at one time until the owner sold it to these people and they have completely destroyed the name and the quality of the restaurant if you're looking for the same, former quality of food and service, the previous owner has opened her much loved schnitzel restaurant in New Westminster called The Tannenbaum, give it a try as you won't be disappointed and if you know Mira....you will see her smiling face once again! I now live in Langley and we go there often as she's a small business owner and she provides the best service, the best schnitzel and the best ambiance in the entire lower mainland when it comes to schnitzel.....an authentic German delight! Below are photos from The Tannenbaum restaurant....food and service will not disappoint!

This was my first visit hear after reading rave reviews for a little under a year. My dad is eastern European so I wanted to bring him somewhere for his birthday dinner that taste like home, and man was this place a bit. The environment is homey and definitely one that you would like to take your time and enjoy. There was only one server for a lot of tables but the kitchen pumped out food super fast. I got the schnitzel bratwurst combo with spatzle sourkraut and some other beef stew thing that was amazing. I liked that I could try a bit everything. Everything on the plate was beyond delicious and flavorful. The apple strudel was being ordered by practically every table and our server said it was homemade so naturally we had to try it. It literally just came out of the oven and was so warm and fresh. I think they also put some nuts and dried fruit in it so it had some texture. In summary, I will definitely be taking other famIly members and friends here when they are in town. It was such a lovely, positive, satisfying and memorable experience. Highly recommend.

That kind of hair was found in few plates and dishes

Waitress isn't clearly understanding that the hair is inside the salad and asking to pack it. Music is very relaxing. Food aren't salty and no salt on the tables. Environment is good but everything else not.

I want to love this place but I think the food is just ok. The schnitzel is nice but it is not outstanding or something I keep thinking of. It can get crowded in the evening, especially on Wednesdays when it is schnitzel special. The place is wonderfully charming and old school with linen tablecloth and glass wares. The decoration is Bavarian with barrels and all the wood. Service is ok, and it may be a good idea to make reservations. In the fast changing landscape of New West, I do hope this place will continue to operate, and not close down like La Rustica and the Java Jazz Bistro in the area.

The herring salad was so fresh and flavorful! We also had the goulash soup which was nice. And a perfectly executed schnitzel and bratwurst, and it came with the rouladen as well, which was perfectly tender. The accompanying spiced purple cabbage was just like his mother makes. We also tried the spaetzel, which is a fun traditional dish! Nice basic veggies and potatoes. Friendly waiter!! Would love to have this closer to us.

Food is okay, staff is friendly but not very attentive. Spetzle is delicious and the space fits with the Bavarian theme.

There was a nice feel to the room as it was not too loud. A great ambiance. We were given our choice of a couple of tables when we arrived. The service was okay. For appetizers my husband had the goulash soup and I had Hunter Spatzle. My husband said his soup was not as flavourful as he was expecting. My spatzle was supposed to have a mushroom gravy on it but there was not much gravy and the spatzle was not well drained. For entrees my husband had zigeuner schnitzel and I had the sole with baby shrimp and Riesling sauce. The schnitzel is very thin as opposed to the thicker cuts that are served at most Bavarian restaurants that we have gone to. It was very tender but my husband was disappointed with his meal as he prefers the thicker piece of pork. The sauce was just all tomatoes and he said it was very bland and not very interesting. My sole was good but not exceptional. We were going to have dessert but by the time our server came to ask if we wanted dessert we had lost interest. It is a beautiful room, the prices are average but overall we found the food was not to our liking. The ladies washroom was out of toilet paper. Awkward.

The potatoes on the side were made with German speck and taste exactly as I knew them. The portions were hearty and we all cleared our plates without question. While there's no dedicated children's menu, a standard schnitzel should satisfy most kids palates, mine loved the spaezel and the charcuterie board was devoured by adults and children alike. The breads are very European, such as rye. Not for everyone, but fresh and tasty. What I really appreciated here was the owner making his rounds, having conversations with his regulars, making new customers feel welcomed and keeping traditions alive. You don't get that so often anymore, it's more about creativity, fusion, new, ratings etc. This was a traditional experience with delicious food and I will definately be back. Be warned, they're popular so you'll need to book in advance and they're old school, so call and leave a message! Worth it!

The wooden furniture and decor gives that homey vibe. Unfortunately, with COVID, when we ate their recently, we were moved to their other room for dinner. Regardless, we still had a nice time. They have changed their hours to only open on weekends which might interrupt some of your plans. We came on a slow night so had great service! The Deutsches Haus has dark beers on tap like Erdinger Dunkel, and Krombacher Dark which feels hard to find in the city. In addition, they have so many other German beers on tap! For dinner the other night, we had the Jagerschnitzel, Schnitzel Vienne, and Schnitzel Munich - they also have a chicken schnitzel for those who don't eat pork. All of them are served with a variety of different sides so it really depends what you feel like - potatoes? Spaetzle (egg noodle)? Cranberry sauce? Rotkraut (red cabbage sauerkraut)? We enjoyed all of our meals with our fantastic beers and were completely stuffed by the end of it. Surprisingly, we still had room though for German Cheesecake, because.. well, come on. Who can resist? While the homey vibe of the real restaurant is gone, the food was still great and the services as well.
