When we come to Vancouver we have to stop in at The Old Bavarian Haus in New Westminster. Thank goodness this place is still here and open. With covid protocols in place. To be truthful it's has been 28 years since we stepped foot in this restaurant. From my understanding it has changed ownership a few times since. We showed up for brunch on Sunday. We were greeted by a friendly server that sat us down. Inside still has that clean European atmosphere. We ordered two Schnitzel one with a wonderful mushroom sauce, veggies, spaetzle and a breakfast bacon & eggs. The food was good, just not what I remembered. I remembered my schnitzel being bigger. Little bit pricier this time around then I remember. LOL We did a lot of walking, so we did work up an appetite. I forgot to take a picture of the food, so that's a sign that it was good. Parking is limited the outside still looks the same. Should make reservations for evening dinner seating is limited. Will be back next time we get a chance. read more

I agree with the comments. I should have checked before going there. I picked this place my memory which is not well over 10 years ago. The place was a ghost town. The waiters were not attentive and for example they brought out the appetizer together with the entrees even without asking. The Schnitzel was terrible. Very greasy, no flavour and flat. Tried the goulash and seafood on mash potatoes. The goulash was nice and hearty with a nice kick. The restaurant is beautifully kept with charm. Very cozy and not too loud, although there were only 4 tables occupied the whole Saturday evening. Service is prompt and pricing a touch high for the quality of the food. read more

EMBARRASSINGLY GROSS. This was not German food...these guys have no clue what they are making. We ordered a number of dishes and everything that came out was revolting. One dish we ordered was the Goulash (beef stew) , came out in the form of runny tomato soup with celery??? Not even remotely close to a stew. "Potato pancakes" came out in the actual form of BREAKFAST PANCAKES?????? Wtf. They tasted like clay. Schnitzel was dry. Roladin was soooo chewy and tough, we couldnt even cut it or bite through it. How is this place open?? We were the only customers there on the Sunday. We were there for over 2 hours. Food took ages to come out. Guess they were busy making up dishes and serving whatever they had and calling it "German Food" but it was really just trash from the pantry. Disappointing experience for breakfast. They had an intriguing menu but didn't quite land the execution. I had the potato cakes but they got my order wrong, forgetting the eggs. One of my companions ordered a croissant with egg and cheese but got a caprese croissant. The espinola was OK but lacking seasoning and salt. We ordered hot tea but it took 30 minutes before drinks arrived. Service was exceptionally slow and we were the only customers. That should have been a clue but we liked the setting and the music. Well here we go. I've been wanting to eat at this place for a very long time, as I'd never been to any old-style german restaurant before, so I was actually a little exited. I happened to be back in the area about two weeks ago, during the afternoon and had to kill some time. So in I went. Nobody in sight. No customers. Had a little walk around, to both dining areas (this place is actually a historic house). Stood back at the front, waiting, looking at the menus at the door-side table. Heard some laughing coming from the back. At this point I was there maybe 4 minutes. Looked very nice inside. Dark stained wood, ornate trim, dim lighting; very traditional. There were small oak barrel halves on the ceiling, that had been converted to light fixtures. Looked as I had expected. Very pleasing to the eye. Some dude finally showed up and brought me to a table. He didn't look at all German to me. Guess he must have been Indian-German. K. I ordered the snitzel (I'm not going to bother looking up the spelling), a dark german beer (not his beer, but the one on the menu), the onion soup, and creme carmel for dessert. Dude was very polite in seating me and in taking my order. So during the wait I decided to read some Google reviews. Wish I hadn't. There was one normal enough, yet negative review, from 3 months ago, where the owner(?) had replied. And had replied in a very rude and unprofessional manner. This put a bad taste in my mouth; before the food even arrived. That review, spelled "having a bad day" written all over it. And even 3 months later, it was never retracted. Very Bad. It was the review where someone mentioned they will spam you if you give them your email. And had said "do not ever give them your email address". And this place replied "you have no right to advise other customers". lol! Holy dumbass Batman! WTF are reviews for, then?? YET said nothing in reply, about how to STOP the "spam" emails. Bear in mind, the reviewer also said there was no option to stop them. Either way, even if someone wants to say in their review.. "Don't eat here"; THAT IS ALLOWED. I mean seriously, FFS! I really felt an angry vibe reading this places reply to that customer. This pissed me off. I thought the food better f'ng well be good. It was. Minus the dessert. The onion soup, served in a handled ceramic dish, had a big piece of cheese-covered bread in it. Tasted good. The main dish was the snitzel champagne [sic]. This was very good.. Not a small portion, either. Was pork snitzel (God keep the animal that provided. And if me saying this offends you... then GFY). It was tender, moist, yet a bit crispy on the outside. Covered in a beige sauce with some mushroom. A ball of shredded purple cabbage; also some steamed broccoli, cauliflower and carrot. Was quite pleased with it. As for the creme carmel dessert; the edges were a bit hard. And a lot of watery business was left in the bottom. This didn't seem right. I asked the dude if that was normal. And his answer, was either a flat out lie, or ignorance. I'll suspect....lie. Because who is gonna say to their waiters... "OK, this creme carmel sitting in the fridge that we made last week.....is supposed to have harder edges. So be prepared if you are asked about it" ? *eyeroll*. It did not taste very good. The beer, was very similar to a Guiness. But perhaps slightly stronger. Good; as german beers tend to be. The waiter dude was decent, otherwise. Brought water soon after I was seated. Refilled it later. Also asked how the food was. But......he didn't light the candle at the table for me. I didn't ask. Wish I did. Oh, and you'd think they could have at least put their Indian waiter in some green shorts. With suspenders. But whatever. I didn't want to see his knees, anyways. So my review is as such. Mixed. Arrive at 5:30pm when the restaurant advertises that it opens at 5pm. Walked into the restaurant and it was dead silent. No music, no people, no sound in general. Waited a few minutes and then rang the bell... still no one showed up. Waited another few minutes and finally someone showed up. She sat us in the darkest room possible. She didn't ask the friendly things such as how our days been, if we are celebrating anything and so on. Just sat us and left. Another 10 minutes goes by before she comes back to ask for our drink orders. We ordered some sodas and again she left. Waited another 10 minutes for the drinks. Again not one other customer, still no music or the sound of workers. Finally she comes back and asks if we could wait another 10-15 minutes since the server still has not arrived for their shift. For one, the restaurant opened half an hour prior to our arrival... why was their no server on and second, she couldn't just take our order? I assume she must have been a manager since she was the only one there it seemed... she couldn't just write our orders down herself. Well we were done at this point with all the waiting and left. It was a complete joke. This restaurant needs to go. It was going downhill before the new owners and now the new owners have just completely ruined the place. No more German authenticity. Had no idea somebody else is managing and operating it hiding behind the good name of the service from years ago. Not sure if they realise how pathetic they are: everything from the reservation through service and food was pathetic- nothing to do with the old fame and reputation this restaurant used to have. No service , no food quality, no clue how to cook all the items from the old menu they kept. Waste of time and money and more importantly- disappointing for anybody who makes a mistake to visit this restaurant. No doubt in my mind that this restaurant will disappear in the near future. Used to go to this restaurant as a regular customer and the service, the ambiance and the food was fantastic! Went back after the covid pandemic in 2021 and if you look in the reviews you'll find my review (2021/08/12) this once wonderful schnitzel restaurant was the best in all the lower mainland at one time until the owner sold it to these people and they have completely destroyed the name and the quality of the restaurant if you're looking for the same, former quality of food and service, the previous owner has opened her much loved schnitzel restaurant in New Westminster called The Tannenbaum, give it a try as you won't be disappointed and if you know Mira....you will see her smiling face once again! I now live in Langley and we go there often as she's a small business owner and she provides the best service, the best schnitzel and the best ambiance in the entire lower mainland when it comes to schnitzel.....an authentic German delight! This was my first visit hear after reading rave reviews for a little under a year. My dad is eastern European so I wanted to bring him somewhere for his birthday dinner that taste like home, and man was this place a bit. The environment is homey and definitely one that you would like to take your time and enjoy. There was only one server for a lot of tables but the kitchen pumped out food super fast. I got the schnitzel bratwurst combo with spatzle sourkraut and some other beef stew thing that was amazing. I liked that I could try a bit everything. Everything on the plate was beyond delicious and flavorful. The apple strudel was being ordered by practically every table and our server said it was homemade so naturally we had to try it. It literally just came out of the oven and was so warm and fresh. I think they also put some nuts and dried fruit in it so it had some texture. In summary, I will definitely be taking other famIly members and friends here when they are in town. It was such a lovely, positive, satisfying and memorable experience. Highly recommend. read more

Old Bavaria House is one of our favorite restaurants and we have gone there numerous times over the years. The food, service and value is exceptional. It is one of the few German restaurants in the lower mainland and we feel it is the best. The décor is very cozy and it is a nice relaxing way to spend the evening with friends or just to enjoy a nice evening as a couple. Last night we had the goulash soup and spätzle Jager art as appetizers. My husband had his favorite dish, schnitzel ziguener and I had the Bavarian peppercorn steak. Entrees come with garlic bread, pan fried potatoes, red cabbage, and seasonal vegetables. We finished the meal with apple strudel and ice cream for dessert. The food as usual was plentiful and very well prepared. The owner was our server and the only wait staff that evening. We were told that the landlord will not renew the lease on the house for the Old Bavaria House and consequently they have to close by September 30, 2020. They are not allowed to retain the name so although the sign will probably still show Old Bavaria House it will not be the same owners who have been operating this restaurant for years. The owner took our contact information and she will notify us with updates and tell us what the new name of her restaurant is going to be and where she is going to be relocate. Way different than the last time we were there 2 years ago. The onion soup was not very hot and cheddar cheese was just kind of half melted in it. The potatoes and schnitzel tasted like the oil they deep-fried it hadn't been changed in months. The mushroom gravy on the schnitzels tasted burnt. The purple cabbage on the side is very sweet now which tastes ok but I much prefer the sour type. The staff seem really nice. Obviously this changed ownership but I really hope they can turn this place around and get it back to the solid schnitzel place it used to be. read more

Sept 2nd Ruined my birthday dinner! My husband made a reservation and told them it was a special occasion. This place looked like it hadn't been update since the 80's. Worst service in my entire life! My husband got his beer right away. After 25 minutes I ask where my drink was, she then got it right away. She had obviously forgotten it. it took her over 20 minutes to take our order, we got our Ceaser salad, odd looking but good. That took about 15 minutes to arrive. After 45 minutes another server brought out our food which was extremely hot but that was fine. I was irritated by the wait time but I didn't say anything. I got my schnitzel and my husband got his rouladen. His food was almost burnt, mine was okay, they cheaped out on the sauce and no crab meat to be found. No one came out to ask how our food was. WOW. I NEVER thought in my life I thought I would have to do what I did BUT I walked over to the kitchen. I was in the area where the cutlery was, I could see here chatting with her co-workers in the kitchen. I would never eaten there if I had seen the disarray! She was leaning against something and just laughing and giggling away!!! I loudly said "Hello!!!!!" She ran over with a shocked look. I want to love this place but I think the food is just ok. The schnitzel is nice but it is not outstanding or something I keep thinking of. It can get crowded in the evening, especially on Wednesdays when it is schnitzel special. The place is wonderfully charming and old school with linen tablecloth and glass wares. The decoration is Bavarian with barrels and all the wood. Service is ok, and it may be a good idea to make reservations. In the fast changing landscape of New West, I do hope this place will continue to operate, and not close down like La Rustica and the Java Jazz Bistro in the area. read more

And a perfectly executed schnitzel and bratwurst, and it came with the rouladen as well, which was perfectly tender. The accompanying spiced purple cabbage was just like his mother makes. Came here for dinner with wifey's God sis, been meaning to try this place for awhile so here was our chance. It was quite busy and our waiter promptly told us he be right with us as soon as he finished what he was doing. Did take a bit longer than I thought it would but we were busy catching up with eachother so it was ok. When he did get to us it was too take our drink orders and he was still busy.. This time he was closing up a check. Finally he got to us and had explained the special of the day, he also answered our questions about the menu as my wife has a specific food allergy. He was very helpful with answering our questions and finding out if he wasn't sure. For our selection we ordered an appy to share with each other and the special today was roasted pork hock which I ordered for my wife and I ordered the 1/2 shnitzel, 1/2 rack of lamb. Everything I had was very tasty, I enjoyed every bite. I ended up eating the rest of my wife's pork hock. She ate most of her sides and only a slice of the protein. We also each ordered a dessert each, I ordered black Forest cake which is made in house, and wife got some kind of mousse. I loved my cake cuz well it's my favorite cake. I actually found it to be one of the better black Forest cake I've had. Usually I find them to sweet or to dense or even too light. This was pretty good! Maybe a bit more moisture would be good but other than that I absolutely enjoyed every bite of it and they were fast bites lol. We have been going to this place for years , the food was always delicious and consistent. Today we ordered again from this restaurant thinking everything would be the same. We couldn't be more disgusted with the food. The schnitzels were bland and tasteless. we also asked for our usual Bèarnaise sauce which was basically just soup with carrots in it ( who the heck puts carrots in Bèarnaise sauce .We paid over $90 dollars for food no one could eat. We learned that the place is under new management since October 1st ,this certainly explains the sudden decline in the quality of food. My first time having German food. Overpriced. The schnitzel was very thin and chewy and not enough peppercorn sauce. The sauce tasted like weak gravy. The bratwurst was also very bland. Came here for a birthday party. There is a large banquet hall on the upper floor, which is where the event I attended was held. Disclaimer: as I was part of a large group, they had a set menu prepared for us. Parking is available in a lot beside the building, as well on the side streets. They really do a good job of making the place look German, with the interior decoration such as various beer steins lining the wall. Even the outside looks pretty authentic, if not cliche. Goulash soup - nice big chunks of meat. Great taste. Black Forest schnitzel - wow, they really pull the crap out of this thing. The piece of meat was the size of a football. Tasted a little buttery. Black forest sauce was nice and thick, with huge slices of mushrooms. The potatoes and vegetables were decent but nothing special. Black Forest mousse - yum. Nice and light. Actually one of the more authentic German places that come to mind - I think I like this place more than Deutches Haus in Vancouver. Used to be one of the most authentic German places to visit in Vancouver. All those high reviews were from years ago under old management. This place no longer serves good food or service, it's not the same restaurant as before, in fact it's a different one operating under the old name, the dinner menu appears the same but god help me what comes out of that is completely different, its sad to see a good restaurant is ruined and I feel injustice to see it retain the former restaurant name. The food is horrible, no culinary or service quality standards apply here. Don't try to give feedback or you will get into an argument. I don't see this place getting better. Nov 8 2023 This place is a fraud. My first clue should have been that I was the only customer at 12:30pm. My poached eggs were cooked hard. The potatoes were a frozen patty I could have bought at the grocery. The service was non-existent, so I wasn't able to get anything more satisfying. Another couple came in afterward, and I noticed they were served a baked cheese dish without any bread! The server argued that it is always served like that. The service and food were slow and lame and expensive. It was insulting to spend money there. Never again. This new ownership is giving the good old place a bad name. The portions are quite large, so make sure you go when you've got a good grrrr going! LOL It's good, old school, German food! The schnitzels are huge...as you can see in the photo! The problem was the restaurant was short staffed. The poor lady was working by herself at a full restaurant, with only the water guy there. She was hard working but the service was slow at times. Great venue for a private party! We attended a family birthday party upstairs last night. The room was perfect and had an outdoor space for the kids to burn off some energy. The staff were polite and accommodating. The hostess of the party said the staff were great to work with. The buffet dinner was traditional and delicious with plenty of choices! Two big screen TV screens upstairs playing rap and I seen the N-word and more profanity in karaoke on the screen. And our schnitzel was just a chicken breast cut in half.
