If you've ever been to a Stube in Germany, you'll know that walking into the Deutsches Haus restaurant downstairs can really make you feel like you're back in Germany (or Switzerland or Austria). The wooden furniture and decor gives that homey vibe. Unfortunately, with COVID, when we ate their recently, we were moved to their other room for dinner. Regardless, we still had a nice time. They have changed their hours to only open on weekends which might interrupt some of your plans. We came on a slow night so had great service! The Deutsches Haus has dark beers on tap like Erdinger Dunkel, and Krombacher Dark which feels hard to find in the city. In addition, they have so many other German beers on tap! For dinner the other night, we had the Jagerschnitzel, Schnitzel Vienne, and Schnitzel Munich - they also have a chicken schnitzel for those who don't eat pork. All of them are served with a variety of different sides so it really depends what you feel like - potatoes? Spaetzle (egg noodle)? Cranberry sauce? Rotkraut (red cabbage sauerkraut)? We enjoyed all of our meals with our fantastic beers and were completely stuffed by the end of it. Surprisingly, we still had room though for German Cheesecake, because.. well, come on. I used to have a pretty positive experience here but this was many years ago. Since then, I've gone to Germany and Leavenworth (a lovely German town) in Washington State a couple of times. Not sure if it was because I've had better food afterwards or did the quality at Deutsches Haus actually drop? 3 of us went and got the Platter for Two, two beers as well as the "century-old recipe" apple strudel. For the Platter, I didn't read what it came with but was very disappointed that it didn't come with the German potatoes that I absolutely love! In its place, there was the potato noodles that was pretty interesting. Everything on this plate (except the noodles) I've had elsewhere. However, I truly found that their version wasn't as good, comparatively. For example, the sausages and the meat loaf weren't "crispy" enough. They were pretty soft and the texture of the meatloaf, as a result, tasted rather "weird" in my mouth. The schnitzels were ok but I never really liked them in general. The Apple Strudel is a dessert I always order whenever I come here. This time around, it was quite dry and the apples were mushy... a bit like the "Red Delicious". I remember they used to be a blend of crunchy and soft, and was absolutely delicious. Even my hubby, who's had it before, asked me "don't you think the strudel tasted a little off today?" Service-wise was average. They kept telling me they'd come by our table but it was like a 5-7 minutes wait after and my hand had to go up awhile after they acknowledge my initial request. They probably forgot about me but the restaurant was only half-full. Also, I'd have appreciated if they took the time to explain what the different food on the platter was. Feast For Two Wednesday Special. Deutsches Haus is only three blocks from where we live. I was always intrigued by the block-long lineups to get into this place during World Cup season. I had also heard about their large meat platters, so it was time for me to loosen my belt and take a crack at it. Their Feast For Two at about $33 sounds expensive until you add up the cost of the items a la carte. The Feast includes a half portion of pork hock, a slice of ham, two types of sausages, a schnitzel all sitting on top of a portion of sauerkraut and pasta. They provide a dish of fresh mustard on the side. This is a very good way to sample several German specialties all at the same time. The pork hock was tender on the inside, and crispy on the outside. It tasted almost like stewed beef and the meat fell off the bone, it was that soft. The schnitzel was very crispy, but not oily at all. The two different types of sausages were juicy and distinct in flavor. While I'm not a sausage fan, I certainly appreciated the German approach to making sausages. The ham was also tender and very different from the typical Christmas ham that I am accustomed to. We finished off our meal with a "Bee Sting Cake" which was simply amazing. As the name implies, this cake is very sweet, likely drizzled with honey or syrup. I've never had something quite like this, so this was the highlight of our visit. You must try this cake! Servers were friendly, but it got very busy quickly after we arrived and we had to sometimes wait a while to be attended to. Interestingly, 80% of the guests the evening we were there were Chinese! This usually implies that the restaurant offers good value, good food or both. While I can't see myself coming here on a regular basis due to having to keep my cholesterol in check, it was fun to try something new. Book in advance to guarantee seating. read more

With plenty of parking in the back and a lot of available seating, it's a great place for groups. We went with 10 others on Tuesday, which is Schnitzel special night! For $14.99 you get two large schnitzels with spaetzel, cabbage, sauerkraut and gravy! Me and my husband decided to instead share the feast for two which had 2 schnitzels, 2 sausages, a large pork hock, spaetzel, cabbage and sauerkraut. Because I have a wheat allergy, I asked for my schnitzel with no breading and for roast potatoes. They were so easily accommodating and everything tasted great! Came here for a large group dinner. The servers were attentive and always made sure we had everything we needed. Most of us ordered the feast for 2 to share between couples. It comes with 2 sausages and 2 pieces of meatloaf which were so delicious and flavorful. Also came with the platter, 2 schnitzels and half pork hock which was just OK. So it looks like they've updated their menus since I last came over. They now have a couple of daily specials for each day of the week. These are 3-course meals, with soup/salad and dessert. The soup for today (Saturday) was mushroom. It was quite tasty, with large sliced mushrooms. A skin formed within seconds of the soup being served, which made me wonder just how much fat was inside. Risotto with mushroom and peas ($14 for the entire meal) - quite good, but slightly undercooked. I know they were trying to serve it "al dente", but there was definitely a small "crunchy factor" here. I guess I could've sent it back for recooking, but it wasn't intolerable by any means. Taste-wise it was decent. Chicken in wine reduction sauce ($17 for the meal) - this one was a bit too salty. It was served with bacon bits, which made everything really oily. The noodles reminded me of udon for some strange reason. For dessert I had the black forest cake. There is also an apple strudel option available. The cake is nice and moist (read: fatty). Yum! I will recommend the risotto, but not the chicken. And yes, I do realize the irony of having Italian food in a German beer hall. We came here to celebrate and have their meat platter (which had Schnitizle, some sort of ham, sausages (of course), pock hock, sour crout, and some mysterious noodles. Now that I look it up, it might have been the $88 platter: "pork hock, schnitzel, bavarian meatloaf, and assorted sausages. Served with spatzle, red cabbage and sauerkraut" on their website. It's definitely enough for four or more people! It's all pork, but it was very delicious at first, but I have a tendency to over eat, and that's when it starts to feel greasy, so don't over do it. The boyfriend and I heard about their pork hocks, and decided to venture in today for their Thursday special. You get a pretty big plate of food for $14.99, which includes 1/2 a pork hock, sauerkraut, and roasted potatoes. I personally found the pork hock to be lacking in flavour, and had to dunk every chunk of meat into the accompanying sauce. The skin was very tough and hard to chew, as it sticks to your teeth the more you chew. Sauerkraut was decent (I'm not German, so I can't really judge), but the highlight of the dish was the potatoes. Light and fluffy with crispy skin! Based on other reviews, we also ordered the Bee Sting Cake. The cake itself was very moist, whipped cream tasted very fresh, and the overall combination was quite delicious! Don't get sucked in by the Special. Get the full pork hock. I've wanted to come here for a long time. Again, if you want to eat at a time when other people want to eat, make reservations. When we walked in, I didn't think we would need them because their parking lot was empty, but it soon filled up. Most of the tables were reserved. People who walked in were sitting at the bar waiting a while for a table. We walked in the door from the 33rd Ave parking lot. The hostess stand isn't that big, but it has a big guest book. You need to sign in as a guest to partake in the porky goodness. Table for four please! After we are seated, the bread comes. It's "healthy" bread. By that, I mean it looks like the granola bars my hubby buys- nuts and seeds held together with other healthy ingredients. I find it very hard. My one friend seems to enjoy it. The other diner orders a pretzel because she wanted bread... just not the healthy free one. We ended up ordering the full pork hock and sharing. See, the Thursday Special is a half pork hock for $12.99, but then the full order is $24. You end up saving $2 by sharing and that's money better spent on let's say, the sausage sampler? Let's start with that... the sausage sampler. I was expecting way more sausage than what came. There was an assortment (about 6) plus sauces. For $12 I was expecting at least full sized... well maybe they are full sized... they were small. All the sausages were really good. I wish I knew the names of them. It should come with a little piece of paper, like a flight of beer, so I can remember what I like best. Our server might have said the names, but I don't remember. On to the hock. We got the full order of the Roasted Pork hock. I am Asian, so I am used to really super crispy pork skin, like with crispy pata. I did not get that with my hock. The skin was really tough, but soggy. Does that make sense? I guess not. It wasn't crisp. Maybe it was the thick layer of melty fat under the skin that didn't allow the skin to crisp. There was a good portion of meat, enough to share... or not, but maybe skip the sausage sampler then. It came on a bed of really good sauerkraut and potatoes. I ate my friend's share of the sauerkraut. I love cabbage. To end the meal, my friend's pretzel finally came. We also ordered a slice of the bee sting cake and black forest cake. I don't know if these are made in house. It says homemade though. I love the bee sting cakes. It comes with a scoop of what I thought was ice cream, but was actually a really thick, sweetened whip cream. Mmmm... kind of like clotted cream. The black forest cake was good, but I would akin both cakes to supermarket cakes. Not alot of options for German Fair here in the Lower Mainland. Especially with my Mother in Law being from the Black Forest... We have gone here several times, and it is quite good here. As always I have the Hunter-Schnitzel and a good German beer. Service was good, and on Fridays they have Bavarian Dancing in the adjacent room to the restaurant. We also ordered a la carte items Potato pancakes with Apple Sauce - typical German fare that you expect to be done well, which is not the case here.. The first time, the edges were. nice and crisp but the centre was raw and cold, the second plate we got as replacement was cooked but over seasoned. Schnitzel - breaded and served with spatzl and red cabbage with dark Mushroom Sauce. Nothing special that you can't do at home. German Hamhock - Skin was super crispy but chewy, the meat was a little dry. I have had better at non German restaurant. Service is slow not because the servers are not doing their job but just a lot more tables to cover. Kitchen is not sending out any All You Can Eat Feast very fast, we (party of 17) waited over 40 minutes before we see any platters. Second round took a wait of another 40 minutes, so if you want to eat, best to come at 5pm when they start. They also ran out of the Pork Roast for the second round. Parking on both sides of the restaurant, and the entrance is easy access, but if you walk in off the street, then you have to walk down a long flight of stairs. We went as a group of seven for a birthday celebration with family visiting from out of town. Service was prompt and friendly and our server Tanja was knowledgable and helpful, going as far to educate us on the best mustard for various sausages. Four of our group shared the platter for four which had a variety of German favorites including shnitzel, bratwurst, weiswurst, Bavarian meatloaf, pork hock and two cabbages. More that enough to share. The other three enjoyed different schnitzels which were accompanied by spetzle, cabbage and gravy. Generous portions. Ate the Sausage Platter for an appetizer, then went with the Jagerschnitzel for the main course-I was really stuffed. But then something really weird happened. I asked the waitress for a doggy bag to take my leftovers in, she said "are you serious"? and I said "I don't want to waste the food and will eat it for a snack tomorrow." She returned about 5 minutes later with just a large plastic bag! No container! Was she serious or simply not very good at being a waitress? Just a plastic bag! There was a maître d , someone more official looking and I showed him the plastic bag and he laughed and promptly brought a container to put my food in. Despite this place being hidden away (seriously, not even at floor level, you have to head down some stairs to get to the restaurant and if there's no one else around you're definitely beginning to wonder whether this place exists), it's certainly a popular spot with those in the know. The place was completely busy and booked up, and we were lucky to have made a reservation because the couple that came in before us had to wait a half-hour for a table. I hadn't had schnitzel since I was in Austria, so I already knew what I wanted to get! Note: the menu online is not up to date. When we arrived, they had a different menu with slightly lower prices for a few things and they were missing some options. It threw us off a bit, but overall the majority of the schnitzels were available. The food portions were BIG. You should either come hungry, or consider splitting a dish. We wanted to try the meat platter but it's a good thing we didn't order it for our table, since we were all full on schnitzel. The spicy meal wasn't actually spicy at all, so that was a bit disappointing. Everything was delicious. My father is German and I've had some good home cooked German food from Oma and my Dad. This was good! The recommended Dunkel was a perfect go-with. I took lots home in a take away bag, as it was too much for my hungry friend and I. Besides, we had to finish with the Bee Sting Cake. The slice was large and perfect for sharing. Our server, Ingrid, was wonderful. Knowledgeable, cordial, and obviously fluently bilingual in both German and English. The prices were reasonable and the establishment has ample parking. We took transit and it was conveniently located on bus routes. The restaurant entrance is a little confusing. There is an "Open" sign on Victoria Drive, but this door is locked. As you walk in you just know the food better be good. And then you see the other peoples' food as you are taken to your seat by very helpful staff. When you look at the food you think wow that looks really good, I wonder if it is really good. As you sit down one of your nurses plugs your portable life support machines into the amply available electrical plugs (a nice touch) so that you can breathe and smell the other food and then you're pretty sure that the food will be good. The pretzel was quite nice but it should have had mustard and salt. I ordered the Tuesday schnitzel special. Each bite was delicious and the schnitzel was extra crispy. My support staff particularly enjoyed how easily I was able to chew the potato salad. My nurse said I couldn't have the Black Forest cake but I told her to pound sand and I just devoured the cake. Cos' Germany feels like Christmas in the winter time. The best thing about the Germany is beer. The best thing about the Deutches Haus is the beer too. Lots of real German beer on tap that does not taste like raspberry framboise chocolate hoppy pi pi from your local micro brew pub which will be going out of business soon because over satirization. The other best thing about the Deutches Haus is Schnitzel. Like Wiener Schnitzel. Wein is Vienna in English. Vienna is in Austria. Austria is kind of like Germany but it's neutral. I love the Weiner Schnitzel here. It goes well with the Christmas atmosphere and the beer. Which is German beer, not Austrian beer. The Goulasch soup is Austrian and Hungarian. Came here on a whim with a friend on Thursday night and tried their pork haxen special ($12.99). You get half a pork hock, a heap load of sauerkraut, some potatoes and a small bowl of gravy. I also ordered the Apfelschorle which is like carbonated apple juice ($3). Value wise - it's good. If you need more you can always order another plate, it's only $12.99. But it tasted a bit bland to me. The meat was fall off the bone and the skin was crispy. However, depending on your cut you'd either get more meat or a bigger bone. I unfortunately got the bigger bone. Oh wells.... The Apfelschorle was no good. If you've tried the authentic ones in Germany, this is horrible. Does not taste like apple and absolutely no fizz. Been driving by for a few years now; finally decided to stop in and try it. Er...oh, dear. This place has the look and feel of impending death about it: built in the 1950s, renovated in the 1970s, and left to moulder since then. Dirty old carpets and wan, dim fluorescent lighting, like a church basement. It's the kind of place your grandma and grandpa might've taken you to when you were a kid, if there were some familial connection to Switzerland or Germany. Grandma and grandpa--the ones still around--remain the (dwindling) main clientele of Deutsches Haus, as it seems. Service: indifferent. I walked in and immediately got a "H'mm...maybe not?" vibe off the place, but decided to try it anyhow. I stopped at the little table with the menus; a staffer nearby looked up at me, then returned to fussing with a stack of napkins. By and by (and by) he put the napkins down, came over, handed me a menu, and said to sit anywhere. A few minutes later I'd decided (Hunter Schnitzel); I set my menu down and looked around. The place wasn't slammed; there were one or two other customers. I kept looking around. And looking. Eventually I picked up my phone--might as well check news headlines--periodically looking around. Eventually, the guy came back to take my order. A reasonable time later, food arrived. It wasn't hideously bad, but neither was it particularly good. It was OK. That's all, just OK. It was not $20 worth of OK, but that's what it cost. The schnitzel was kind of tough and chewy. The spätzle were a little doughy. The red cabbage was notably oily. Midweek Schnitzel Special this month! (Feb '10) *First off, my apologies for plugging you in on this FAB deal so late, I've been so busy taking the Olympics in! GO CANADA!* This restaurant is an old German Club which has it's own restaurant. I needed to satiate my schnitzel cravings and this was the perfect place for it! Their midweek special can be found on their website but it's basicallly one pint of beer and any pork schnitzel for $15! Their schnitzel is regularly priced at about $19+ so this is a good deal folks! I ordered the jaegerschnitzel and the wheat beer. To be honest, the schnitzel wasn't as pounded out as I like it to be. Personally I like my schnitzel really thin and as big as the plate! This was a thicker and there wasn't as much jaeger sauce as I would have liked. The steamed/boiled? veggies were sparse and placed on the plate in a sort of after-thought. Why the 4 stars? Despite the lack of creativity in plating and the somewhat thick piece of meat, the value and service was great ($15 for food AND drink) and the flavour was good. German restaurants are few and far between in Vancouver. This is the closest location to my place, and I felt it was my duty to show my new roommate his roots. In fairness, it was Tuesday night, therefore it was Schnitzel night. On yelp it says the restaurant closes at 10:00pm, but the kitchen closes at 9:00pm, and patrons are allowed to stay until ten. The decor is minimal and plays up it's culture, complete with German radio! The principle colour at Deutsches Haus is brown, with an accent of yellow. I would describe the color of food that way too! Brown, with an accent of yellow. Both of us dined on pork schnitzel, which comes with a small bowl of spinach salad and potato salad. Since I'm not a fan of mayo-based potato salad, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was vinaigrette-based. The schnitzel was well done and kinda bland. The lemon wedge barely helped, and we ordered spicy mustard and brown mushroom gravy. Those accents made it perfect. The whole wheat-rye bread with butter was a great starter, and they have imported German witbier, which is appropriately expensive. Service was prompt, kind, and welcoming, without being intrusive. Came here with the entire German family just after Christmas. I have been before and knew the food is not über great. the menu reads really nice but the execution of the food is not good. Maybe i should offer them my services on how to cook German dishes, I am German and have been a chef for many years. the Red cabbage was poor, spätzle not fresh and burnt. Wiener Schnitzel not from Veal as it should be. The Matjes Hering was very delicious and well executed. Sad because this could be a super hip German location. The interior is old style German looking but could do with a more contemporary look and feel without loosing its cultural touch. This was unexpectedly wonderful--I don't know if they're under new management, have a new chef, or if former reviewers are just especially picky. The approach to the restaurant is unprepossessing (think community centre chic), but the restaurant itself is charming, Germanic, and clean, the waitstaff were excellent, very attentive and helpful, and the food was simply yum. It was Schnitzel night (Tuesday) so my nephew had the schnitzel special, and I had the regularly-priced schnitzel with spaetzle, red cabbage, and a mushroom gravy (I think) which was so thick and mushroomy and delicious I just ate it on its own like another side. The schnitzel had a panko crust and was light and crunchy, fabulous. The food came out super fast (I guess on Schnitzel night they are cranking out the schnitzels), there was very little wait for my custom decaf brew, and the prices were about $19 for my regular schnitzel and only $13 for the schnitzel of the day. Both large plates were heaped with food, as if your Mom had loaded them up rather than a chef. I saved half of mine and had a second meal with it later, at home. For the price, 5 stars easy. If it were charging $25-30 entrees I'd want a bit more in the decor department, but they don't, so s'all good. read more

I've had dinner here twice on specials nights--once for Schnitzel Tuesday and then on the all-you-can eat feast night on Wednesday. Schnitzel night was the better of the two...you get two big pieces with green salad and potato salad as sides. There was something special but hard to pin down about the potato salad. The schnitzel was not very greasy, surprisingly and I was able to take a piece for lunch the next day along with a bit of potato salad. As a group of three, we also ordered the sausage appetizer, which was great to share. And we ordered the strudel and it was quite tasty--a nice way to end the meal. The all-you-can-eat was a little disappointing. Sarah W's review contains the items included in the buffet. There was also a blueberry/apple cake for dessert. I'd heard stories of craziness and meat sweats on Twitter so I was probably a little too pumped up about this meal. Service is casual but friendly. The restaurant is located in the basement and has a kitschy feel. There were a couple of large groups both of the nights I was there, which lent a convivial atmosphere. Beer is certainly flowing and people are having a fun time. Overall, both times were cool experiences but food is just ok and I'm not in a hurry to return. read more

NO stars at all for this restaurant. What a disappointing experience. I am German I always like to go to the Vancouver Alpen Club and bring my friends to show them a little piece of where I am from. I thought it was a great way to celebrate my friends birthday by bringing him there. I have been to the Alpen club many times as it reminds me of home. We went there back in march at around 7.15pm and were barely greeted by a very rude Asian lady, who told us in very broken English "Wait here". We barely understood what she was trying to say. We waited for about 15 minutes, which is completely fine as we did not have a reservation and the restaurant was very busy. As we got seated, the lady handed us some bread and menus. We asked if we could order a drink, she said "no you wait" and walked away. We enjoyed some of the delicious bread and waited for her to return, after over 30minutes with nobody returning to take even our drink order I went up to the bar and ordered our drinks from there. The bartender was so nice and took our food order as well, who knows otherwise how much longer we would have had to wait for that. Food came after 20minutes and was barely warm and not very good. The haxen you had on special was mostly fat and barely eatable, Some of us had the Hunter schnitzel and it was dry and the spaetzle were really greasy and fatty. Overall the experience was very negative, I felt embarrassed that I have brought my friend there for his birthday. Though this is the only place I can go when I feel a bit home sick and enjoy a German meal I will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

As much as I want to crawl into bed and sleep off this food coma, here I am, standing with my pants unzipped, yelping about this restaurant. The unzipping happened in the car on the way home and standing, well, because, standing is better than sitting and while moving is better than standing, I am too full to move. I was supposed to come here yesterday for my birthday but it looked too "meaty", more suited for my Dad's taste. Afterall, it was his pick. Instead, we went to Les Faux Bourgeois (5 stars) last night.... I've always driven pass this Alpen Club on the corner of 33rd and Victoria and so today, since I was hungry and it was on my way home, I decided to give it a try. It was 3pm and lunch was still being served. I had a hankering for goulash and opted out of the $13 special because it came with the ginger carrot soup of the day. By the way, that is a good deal. The goulash was a disappointment. I remembered the goulash I had on Granville (around 12th) when I was in high school. It was served in a little cauldron, dangling above a flame. That was damn good goulash with bits of "flour" or something in the stew. This goulash was just gravy with potoatoes and overcooked meat. The schnitzel , and I have no idea why I had an image of streudal in my head, was good. The gentleman celebrating his father's birthday at the next table said it was the best he's had in awhile. I ordered the smaller version for $12 and it came with potatoes and salad. It was not small so I can only imagine how big the regular must be. Basically, it's a battered piece of fried pork or whatever meat you choose. In Japanese cuisine, it's the Katsu pork. Yummm...very bad for you because it's battered and deep fried but oh so good. The Katsu usually comes with a ton of cabbage which I supposed is a way to balance out, or rather absorb all the fried fat. So now I know where I can get a katsu pork. I have to run in about 2 hours but I decided that since I didn't have my birthday dessert and at the time, it seemed do-able, I also got a dessert. With Ingrid's help, I decided on the homemade apple streudal with whipped cream and ice cream. It was good and I'd wish that I wasn't in such a food coma at the time so that I could enjoy it with a coffee. I felt that I....must....drive...home....before....I....fall...asleep. Another review that I read mentioned the service was slow. I can only say that Ingrid was very helpful and friendly. Because it was a late lunch, there were only 3 tables to attend to. read more

Came here for dinner the other night. The restaurant wasn't full nor was it empty. The entrance of the restaurant is actually on the lower level and the door isn't a typical restaurant door. There were a couple tables filled, one with a group playing card games so they definitely have their regulars. We ordered their special a pork schnitzel served with veggies and the kassler rippchen (smoked, cured pork loin). The special came with either a soup or salad and we opted for their soup of the day - a ginger carrot. We also got the goulash. The ginger carrot soup was surprisingly really good. The goulash tasted as it should. The pork schnitzel was a bit dry and didn't have much flavour. It was overpowered by the sauce that was served with it. The smoked pork was really good. It came with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and gravy. The gravy tasted very heavy of beer which depending on your personal preference may or may not be a good thing. The pork tasted like ham, but not as salty. It went really well with the sauerkraut. This is a good place to go with your family. They have huge portions. They also rent out their space for parties. Service was consistent and fast. Will be back to try some of their other offerings to satisfy my meat and potatoes cravings. read more

Our visit for my friends birthday got off to a rocky start when we made a reservation for 8 only to arrive and be told we cannot dine if we are not members, no exceptions. There was a language barrier with the host and it took us awhile to get it out of the man that we can become members for $10 which apparently comes off the price of your first meal (so basically free.) But a member can only bring 4 people so two of us had to become members. The schnitzel was amazing according to everyone at the table that ordered it. I had eaten dinner and opted to go straight to dessert. I opted for the Creme Brulee which was horrible, the worst I have ever had in fact! The sugar on top almost bend my spoon and nearly broke my teeth it was so hard and what laid beneath was a runny tasteless mess...won't be ordering that one again! On a plus note they have a parking lot which takes away the need to hunt for parking in this bustling neighborhood! read more

I was there yesterday evening and my over all experience was disappointing. I am from Germany and therefore I think I'm able to write a realistic review about the place and taste. The interior of the restaurant is already kind of historic, but it seems like the other guests like it. The fact that it's located at the basement is at first confusing but it didn't influenced the atmosphere in a bad way. The food was okay but not good. I had the "Schlemmerpfanne" (grilled pork tenderloin served on cheese spätzle with mushroom sauce, fried onions): The meat was very good as well as the mushroom sauce and the fired onions but the Spätzle (egg nudels) weren't homemade or at least they didn't taste like original ones ("La Brasserie", Vancouver West End has better one's). Friends of mine hat Schnitzel was tasteless and not as a Schnitzel is supposed to taste. In addition, the food is not authentic: "Jägerschnitzel" (hunter's schnitzel) is originally without a panada. I asked our waitress about that and she told me (in German) that it's common here to prepare it like this (in Germany it's definitively NOT). Because it was Saturday there was "folk"-music, but seriously: it was a distraction and inappropriate for a restaurant which states that you'll get a authentic German experience.
