He was a typical, crazy Australian Shepherd puppy and came back a well-adjusted, attentive, obedient, and magnificent adult dog. I understand I'm the outlier here and everyone for the most part has had great experiences, which is what makes mine even more odd.. I reached out this last week to inquire about their veteran program for service dogs and bootcamp. Gave Karen all my info and let her know I had a 15 week shepherd and a 4 year old shepherd. My 4 year old was trained by DTE and haven't worked with them in over a year and a half at this point. We ended the phone call and then she followed up via text asking me some random questions that didn't really make sense to me and then after I tried reaching out via phone. She texted me after I inquired about our scheduled meeting and said there was a conflict of interest and declined to work with us. Wouldn't elaborate, I tried calling and got literally sent to voicemail, and essentially ghosted after that text. I still have no idea what the conflict of interest is, why that would even matter that my other service dog whose 4 was trained by someone else years ago, and what that has to do with my current puppy. Mind you my work with DTE was done in Utah not even in Tennessee... So bizarre and just weird how this was handled.. So I guess just be cautious but everyone else seems to have had great luck at least. read more

People who read reviews here should realize that a person who trains their dog needs to actually take the training and follow through with the lessons in order to know what the end results will be. What we have here as far as negative reviews are people who did not complete training, or in some cases even take the training. Some people make judgements without full facts. In fact I am aware of the facts around the "emaciated dog" who actually was sent home after one week (the dog can't be emaciated in one week) precisely for not eating and the recommendation was to seek out veterinary help. This owner didn't return and didn't see the vet. Therefore didn't even receive training, so could not actually judge the training. This was not because it wasn't offered to her, but rather because she did not seek out the veterinarian as suggested for a dog who could have had a health issue. The primary concern is for the welfare of the dog! read more

K-9 Companions are miracle workers! They took our sweet but misbehaving golden and turned him into a sweet and better behaved golden! We could not be more appreciative! They trained our pup and gave us the knowledge to correct unwanted behavior. They do the bulk of the training work, but once your pup has been trained at K-9 Companions, your training begins as you will need to work daily with your pup. The K-9 Companions farm is gorgeous and only trains a small amount of pups at the same time. 3 weeks away form you pup can be a long time, but there were constant updates in the form of texts, pictures, and videos. K-9 Companions has done a wonderful job with my pup so far! My Goldendoodle, Lumi, is in training to become a psychiatric service dog. I worked with Karen Duet who was was very easy to get in contact with via text or phone. They were very clear about what my dog would be learning and I received a tour of the facility, too! I felt very comfortable leaving my dog there for 3 weeks as he was in great hands! And, I received a ton of updates and pictures. So, I never had to worry about how he was doing. I want to say a special thank you to Nikki who worked so diligently with Lumi while he was there. Lumi seemed very excited to see her during our home visit. This is one of the best training facilities I've ever been too. I would recommend Karen Duet and her staff of highly trained professionals to train my dogs . The staff is diligent in their care of each and every dog. The training is done with gentle hands and experienced trainers who have a passion for what they do. Consistently is the key to training and at K-9 Companions Nashville they are Consistently good at training dogs for obedience or service dogs for our military and for kids with autism. All smoke and mirrors - I DO NOT recommend this training facility! My dog came back to me extremely emaciated and all I got for the high cost of fee was a routine. We have had the absolute best experience. They not only train the dog, but they work with you to make sure you understand how to keep the dog trained. They have a beautiful facility with large runs and fenced in areas for the dogs. It never stinks and is well maintained. When we returned for the second round of training, my dog was really excited to see his trainer. That's how I know they were treating him right. They took time to understand our needs and expectations and made sure the training was matched to our needs. While at training, we received several videos and pictures. Took our young lab mix, Piper, to K9 Companions for level 1 (on leash) training at the end of May 2024. She went for her 3 week intensive training a stubborn, reactive, disobedient dog that couldn't be taken for a walk without trying to pull my arm off and can't home a well-behaved, less stubborn, loose-leash walking young lady. (The stubbornness is definitely an age thing, but MUCH improved.) K9 Companions training has been A TOTAL game-changer for life with our girl! Walks are pleasant and easy, she can run with me and doesn't cut off trying to chase another dog, cat, deer, squirrel, or leaf blowing in the wind ! She behaves in the house and doesn't jump on the furniture anymore. She's like a totally different dog, but still her sweet self. Gracie, her trainer, did an amazing job understanding how to bring out the best of our girl! Karen Duet, owner, cares a great deal about the dogs brought to her for training. Thought easier to take my review from Google since its so long. Not a good place to go if training for Veterans Service Dog. Karen the owner is rude, talks down to you, and charges crazy money when she makes it sound like she cares. If you questioned her methods she is condescending. You can only talk to her through text, and is always busy. She had tried to give me a blind dog, another dog who was destructive, me being his 3rd house, the dog bust out of the cage, destroyed, growls, and known behavior of killing chickens from another vet who had Stryker before me, the last guy was to busy getting high, and not caring for the dog, Karen also tried to give me a 7 year old dog to train as my SD, her and argued in text how insane this would be. The dog would graduate at 9 years old. I am finally glad I woke up of wasting my time for over a year, and money to have the courage to leave and found a great business who also helped me get a great Veteran Service Dog in Training, trains with me, and treats me like a human being, my baby Chloe is what a SD is to be, and I am trained with weekly. The company doesn't brag like Karen feels the need to. My other beef with Karen, she will only train for 3 task, where my dog is allowed to learn ad much as is needed for my disabilities, I should not have to pick and choose, but trained on what I need to function. She wasn't honest, and always badmouthing other Veterans to me, not counting her rudeness to me, countless times my husband corrected her. I do not get why the disabled from day with the dog having all its shots, are not out learning Public Access work in a pet friendly place. My dog already has aced it. Karen will not do this, until around 16 months. Karen makes you board and train, which means she charges you more and more money to not have you NOT present until the end. They charge you to have them train without you there. Ive asked Karen to take down a letter as me, a Veteran I wrote, she had no permission to use, when this dog washed, Karen did not want to wash her, but I had her evaluate, to be told she should not work, she was fearful, Karen blamed me and made stories where I took her to public places, Only took her to dog friendly places where I was told to practice. Its sad she is still using this letter when she promised it would be removed, this is false advertisement to Veterans using words I asked to remove because finding out this was all a sham. I have tons more, in text from her, thank God I saved all, but not worth my time to keep texting. I can only share the truth of my husband and my experience with Karen. My view Karen to me is about money, and status, not helping vet's but lining her pockets with her crazy expensive program. It's a shame because she does have good trainers. read more

My rescue dog did 3 weeks of what I would call "doggie boot camp" at K-9 Companions. After reading some of the other Yelp reviews, I want to give an honest assessment of our experience. We came to K-9 as a last resort before putting our dog, Alexander Hamilton, down. He was aggressive towards people and other animals, and despite multiple attempts at professional in home training, he was not getting any better. We love this little dog, but felt it would be irresponsible to try to re-home him...he was like a loaded gun with no safety. We researched intense "inpatient' training for Alex. We dismissed K-9 at first because of some of the negative feedback on Yelp. But we had a friend who had a similar situation with their dog, and they absolutely swore by K-9. So, I scheduled an appointment. The wait for an appointment was 6 weeks, but I stuck with it. Karen, the owner, was very communicative during the entire process, and was very up front and direct about what her expectations for the initial appointment would be. Literally all of the expectations were for the safety of her staff (don't bring weapons to the consultation, keep the dog on a leash during the consultation, etc.). She assessed Alex during the initial consultation and suggested that he needed a specific medication because he was a "nervous" dog. She wanted him to take the medication for several weeks, then reassess. Karen was very direct during the consultation, which did feel off-putting at first. The approach at K-9 is sort of "my way or the highway", which can rub people the wrong way. However, with dogs, consistency is key. If K-9 does training their way, and then I do it a different way, the dog is confused and the training doesn't stick. The "my way" approach that K-9 uses is so that you don't end up wasting your money on the training. So, back to Alex...we medicated him (as recommended by Karen) and saw almost immediate results. He became more manageable. K-9 reassessed Alex, and decided to take him on, for which we were thankful. During the training process, we got daily updates (with photos). Nikki was the trainer who worked with Alex the most, and I cannot say enough good things about her. She knows her stuff, forwards and backwards, and during his stay, Alex transformed from a tyrant of an animal into this sweet and pretty dang obedient dog. In 3 weeks. Amazing stuff. Couple of other points... 1. K-9 Companions is about the cleanest dog kennel you will ever walk into. They run a pretty tight ship, and you can feel confident that if you leave your dog there, they will be well cared for. 2. We did not find Karen to be rude (as some of the other reviews mention). We found her to be very direct. In my opinion, this is for 2 reasons; the safety of her staff, and the well-being of your dog. As a very direct person myself, I appreciate working with someone who doesn't "sugarcoat". 3. Consistency is key (did I already mention that??). You must follow their recommendations when you return home with the dog. Honestly, they devote hours to "training" the dog parents on how to continue handling the dog at home. My favorite part about working with Nikki is that instead of just telling you what to do with the dog, she explains the science behind WHY the methods work. Understanding the "why" helps me to retain the information and continue the training. This sets you up for success. I would highly, highly recommend K-9 Companions. read more

Karen and K-9 Companions Dog Training has been a life saver to my husband and myself!! Our now 2 yr 4 mth old Golden Retriever was to say the least a handful even from the beginning when we brought him home at 8 weeks old. He is my 4th Golden and prior to Walter our Goldens were laid back and easily trained. I never imagined having to reach out for help because we couldn't even walk him on a leash, who would have thought he is a Golden Retriever, easy going and laid back??? After 3 months of wrestling with him, getting pulled down, constant jumping and the last straw walking him down a boat dock at 10:00 one night and he wiggled out of his collar and off in the dark water he went. Fortunately, he is blonde in color and I saw him go under the water I was able to pull him out and get him back to our boat, otherwise he could have gotten tangled underneath the docks and I would have lost him. At this point we contacted K-9 Companions when they were in Hartsville, TN and off to a 3 week boot camp he went. We were amazed when we picked him up and immediately took him to our houseboat with everyone at the marina being in awe as to how different he was behaving!!! He was definitely like a different dog, he would walk on a leash without pulling and jumping, when we stopped he stopped and sat down among a long list of other behavior patterns we never dreamed possible for our Walter to work through. Once Walter reached, as Karen referred to him a "teenager" , we decided to revisit K-9 Companions at their new facility in Mt. Juliet, TN to expand his training to their off-leash bootcamp. After visiting their new facility with all indoor, heated and cooled accommodations as well as the pristine fenced outside training grounds we enrolled him in his second session. As before, when we picked Walter up we were amazed that this was the same 8 week old puppy we brought home a year earlier. The one thing I wanted was to be able to call him when off leash and have him come to me which the first time this happened I was overwhelmed because before his off leash training he had a mind of his own if he was running free. I could go on and on as to the difference in him from his first visit but it would take days!!! Walter is now over 2 years old and there have been occasions I have reached out to Karen and K-9 Companions for advice in various areas and they have been more than helpful. While everyone we have met at K-9 Companions are very loving where their pups are concerned they are very tough and extremely focused when it comes to their training strategies. They didn't cut us any slack either because as they said if we don't follow through with the base training they have taught then it doesn't do any good and we have to be consistent with what Walter learned during his stay at bootcamp. I can't say enough about this group of trainers and their facility and have and will continue to recommend them to anyone needing help in training their dogs. read more

K9 companions is amazing! I first brought my dog, Zinnia, to K9 companions when she was 5 months old. She panted and shook with anxiety and you could barely get her attention. After 3 weeks with them, she came back an entirely different dog. She was confident and attentive. It's been almost two years and she's gone back several times to train. In fact, today she just got certified as a service and therapy dog (we have her amazing trainer Nikki to thank for that!) Can not say enough about K-9 Companions! As a busy attorney, I needed help getting my XL Golden Retriever trained in basic obedience. When he finished boot camp he was on auto pilot! It was amazing. The trainer came to my home and helped me learn how to reinforce all the great training my Bear had learned. It was an amazing experience. I learned how to ensure my best friend could reach and maintain his greatest potential. And for his safety he learned about barrier crashing. No more worries he would get out and injure himself. He was trained not to cross the gate threshold. On a day the gardener came and I forgot, the gardener left the gate open. Thankfully for the excellent training Bear received, he didn't cross the gate threshold, when I returned home, Bear was safe in his yard even though the gate was left wide open! K-9 Companions is absolutely the best training facility I have ever been to! I was blessed to be able to go through there school for dog trainers and learn from one of the best in the business. I was there for 8 weeks everyday and got to see the true care and compassion that Karen and her expert staff has for every dog in there care. Good trainers, however horrible customer service. My friend recommended Nashville K-9 however my husband and I accidentally set up an appointment with K-9 Companions. We went ahead and and decided to go with K-9 companions because the initial interview went well. We left our dog there for 3 weeks. We had a hard time having them return phone calls and emails over our dogs stay as we were trying to get updates on how the training was going. I knew they were busy so that didn't bother me too much, however an hour before we were to pick up our dog from the facility, they called us and said that they needed to keep her a few extra days because over the Christmas 2016 holiday it had snowed and our dog did not get training those days. Instead of calling us 2 days before, or at least the morning before, they called us an hour before we were suppose to pick up our dog. I had already taken off work and was on my way up to pick her up from Nashville. After that happened, they had also cancelled 2 home visits with us and had to book them several weeks out from the original date. They also told us they would call us back to reschedule but they never did. We had to constantly call them to try to rebook our appointment. The last thing and final thing is we had booked for our dog to stay with them over our 4th of July 2017 vacation. We called in February 2017 to schedule the stay, as we went back and looked at our phone records as well as our notes from the phone call. They said that we never called to set it up. They did a good job with training our dog but I believe there are many other great trainers out there that would also do a good job if not a great job. We kept giving them the benefit of the doubt but we spent way too much money to be treated so poorly. I would not recommend K-9 Companions. read more

It's probably not possible to fully judge the results of a month of away-from-home dog training after just 48 hours back home. But given the fact that both Emma and Charlie are now coming when they're called, walking perfectly at heel for miles at a time and stoically ignoring rabbits and deer and (well, almost) a sudden volley of firecrackers--I am giving K-9 Companions a full 5 stars to start and may add to this review after we've had a few weeks to more fully assess the impacts of their time at boot camp--for instance, after we see how they handle themselves in large gatherings of people. (The main reason we sought out extended training was that Emma has been unpredictably aggressive around men, and even normally mild-mannered Charlie tends to feed off her anxiety.) Anyway, to continue this first review: On July 5, 29 days after we'd dropped them off, Paul and I returned to the K-9 farm to retrieve our dogs and receive our own initial training. Travis Duet, who grew up in the canine training business founded by his mom in California several decades ago (I bought her book!), met us with handshakes and smiles, then sat us down for a full report, written instructions for daily at-home training sessions (essential), recommended solutions for problem behaviors and a really insightful analysis of the personality, instincts and even the nervous system of each dog (including the regrettable assessment that Emma's separation anxiety is basically hard-wired into her brain and thus not easily correctible. Bummer.) He then brought each dog up from the barn, one at a time, and spent a good 45 minutes with each one demonstrating what she'd worked on for the last four weeks. Given the July heat, the miraculous return of their long-lost family and the additional distractions of a cat and numerous free-range chickens, both Charlie and Emma did super- well in these exercises--they were clearly comfortable with Travis, respected his authority without fearing it, and responded willingly if not always immediately to his commands--sit, stay, down, come, heel, etc.,--plus the occasional growled NO, reinforced as needed by a tug on the choke collar--a device I never fully appreciated until now. Paul and I were given plenty of time to practice each command with each dog, to appreciate their individual strengths and weaknesses and to ask all the questions we wanted. This initial owner-training session lasted more than two hours and will be followed by three or four additional sessions at our home, when Travis will see how the four of us behave on home turf and gauge what our local needs and challenges are. His knowledge about the dog universe is extensive, as you would expect, and he's happy to share everything he knows: which training tools are worth buying, which dog-food brands are nutritious, which websites are useful. K-9 Companions stocks a limited but good-quality supply of training aids at very good prices--we bought two choke collars--and can, if needed/requested, supplement a dog's diet with a home-cooked blend that Travis and his wife/partner Abby make using their own grass-fed beef and farm-raised vegetables. Their policies were fair and clear, their small staff seemed committed and knowledgeable, and I should mention that their fee for a whole month of training/boarding was EXTREMELY reasonable (and included a second-dog discount). In short, as of K9+2 (2 days after leaving camp), we feel that sending Emma and Charlie to K-9 Companions was a sound investment and one that, like any investment, will mature over time. We drove away with two happy, tired dogs, delighted to be reunited with them, and generously supplied with heirloom tomatoes, green beans and eggs that Abby had just collected from the nests of those wandering chickens. read more
