Just want to give some kudos to the Valero gas station on Sierra Madre Boulevard across from Taylor's. My car battery died this morning, so after getting Auto Club to give me a start, I went down to the station to get a new one. The owner told me he would be glad to put in a battery for me but he suggested I call the dealership first to see if it was covered under warranty. I just assumed it was not covered. Well, as it turns out, it was covered. Just under the max mileage. I thanked the Valero owner and left to go to the dealership. This station owner could have easily charged me and put in a battery. He could have easily said nothing to me. Really appreciate when business owners are honest and have integrity!!! P.S. After posting this on FB, well over 200 people in the community liked the post and a ton of people responded validating what a wonderful and honest man he is! One of my kids is in a sports league that sometimes has matches in the area, so this gas station is convenient for fueling up (it's the only one in town). The prices aren't great. You are paying for convenience and the safety of a rich, nice area. Depending on the time of day, the lines can be long, but aren't the worse. I have had two bad experiences now at this gas station. As I was about to leave, one of the mechanics comes out, stands in front of my vehicle and holds his hand up. Then with his other hand, he waves to the car in his garage to go ahead and pull out, so that that customer could go ahead and leave....! What the....?! There were no other cars behind me! He couldn't have waited until I left?! My second experience had to do with one of their customers, so technically not their fault, but it again had to do with a "me-first" attitude. I was starting to pull into a pump (about a third of the way in), and an older lady pulls up really fast in front of me! None of the other pumps or islands were occupied. Neither of us could access the pumps. I thought maybe she was trying to get through, but as I backed a little, she continued to aggressively pull forward! I rolled my window down, asking her if she was trying to get through, and she shook her head and said she wanted my pump...! What the....?! Conclusion: Sierra Madre is a nice, rich area, but there are some badly-behaved, weird, entitled grown-ups. If you can get your gas elsewhere, do so. read more

Best service and prices in Sierra Madre. I became a customer at this Valero location about a year ago. Its always packed so I rarely stop for gas, but on this day my brake light went on and I was concerned so I stopped. Edgar asked me to leave my Volvo (btw he is a Volvo Specialist ...but he is more like the Rain Man of Volvo cars.) so he could inspect it. I walked home a few blocks away and he called to tell me it was just a light bulb, he replaced it, and I owed him $10.00. I know this doesn't sound like a big deal BUT he could have told me I needed an all new set of brakes and etc and I probably would have believed him. He had the opportunity to screw me out of money but he didn't. About 3 months ago my car started smoking a little...this is never a good sign. I took it over to Edgar and he put a sealant in the engine so I could drive it a little longer until he could find me a low mileage engine to replace the poor beat up engine that was in my car. He found an engine that had 48k miles on it and replaced the old engine with the low mileage engine, replaced the turbo, service the transmission, and fixed every minor thing that needed fixing for well under $4k. Today my car was running a little rough so I took it over to visit Edgar and he confirmed there was a bad spark plug and coil...he fixed everything including replacing my brake light for $0.00. He could have charged me and I would've paid him. Once again he had the opportunity to screw me over and he didn't. There is a reason they are always busy and everyone goes there for car service. They are honest, knowledgeable, and I trust them with my cars. read more

Today, for instance, I dropped in because my battery was acting sluggish and I needed him to test it. He immediately pulled my car into the bay, hooked up the equipment to test it and I KID YOU NOT, I was out the door with a new battery in less than 10 minutes! How is THAT for service? There is free water and air at the pumps closest to Baldwin Ave. Also there is a service are and auto shop where they are helpful and knowledgeable. I was referred to Edger by a fellow Sierra Madre Audi S car owner, and I see why the fellow Audi S car owner likes Edger so much. First, Edger and his crew are very knowledgeable mechanics. Second, his pricing is significantly lower the an Audi dealership. Edger also found some of the mechanical defects claimed by the Audi dealership as being urgent, were not urgent at all. Thirdly, Edger has been reasonably prompt in attending to my car needs, which is impressive in that his shop is extremely busy. On one occasion, I stopped at his station without a reservation in that my low oil indicator lamp had just activated. I told Edger that I was in a hurry in that I needed to get to an appoint. He immediately topped off my oil, and when asked him what I owed for his service, he told me there was no charge. Fourthly, Edger goes above and beyond in helping his customers. On one occasion, while working on my Audi, Edger pointed out some poor quality work performed by a collision shop I had previously taken my car to due to a minor accident that was involved in. When I took my Audi back to the collision shop to get the work done properly. The collision shop owner was embarrassed in that the poor work done by his shop was concealed, and I would not have ever found out about it if were not for Edger bringing it to my attention, even though the poor work was unrelated to the work that Edger was performing on my car at the time. Lastly, I had electrical problems with my Acura NSX and had to have the car towed to Edger's shop. I was competing in time trial races in four days and I asked Edger if he could find and fix the problem in time for me make it to the race track. Note, very few mechanics are qualified to work on Acura NSX's, which is a rare Japanese exotic sports car. He diagnosed the problem and made the necessary repairs with time to spare. I was expecting a higher charge than normal due to the timing urgency and the special knowledge required to work on an NSX, but to my surprise, the bill was less than I expected. So, to sum things up, Edger and his crew are top notch, honest and have reasonable pricing, and I'm surprised at the negative comments made by the other reviewers. It does not appear to me that the repair shop they have described is anywhere close to the shop that I have experienced multiple times! read more

There are actually two gas stations in teeny tiny Sierra Madre. Both are Valero stations. This one is on the corner of Baldwin and Sierra Madre Blvd across from Kersting Court. I went there to drop off my tire that had a screw in it for a patch job. The very nice young man who works there in the convenience mart assured me that I could leave my tire and the mechanic would patch it when he got in. Price quoted? $12.00. This seems reasonable and my brother in law also recently had a patch job there for the same price. Great. Good. When I get off work and go to pick it up the mechanic, Edgar asks me if I want the tire put back on my car. Duh. No, I want to drive around on the donut sized spare! I know I am exhibiting sarcasm here, but believe me, I was gracious and asked him please, would he mind putting the tire on. He does, in a speedy fashion. Then comes the time to pay. Wow! here must've been a hell of an inflation in the 8 hours since I dropped it off. $25.00 is what he wanted. Fine. I gave it to him. It is obvious to me that this guy is one of those mechanics who likes to "stick it" to the ladies. And NOT in a good way, I can tell you! Lesson learned. I have to say the owner of this gas station Edgar is one of a kind. He is like finding that rare jewel that only very few exist. I was visiting my daughter in Sierra Madre and my car stalled backing out of a parking spot in front of the small street that goes one way. So my car was blocking the entire street. People behind me were mad thinking I was just sitting there knitting. I could not get it into gear to move the car. I was a mess as you can guess people needed me to move. Edgar came over to save my day. A new shifter had been put placed and it was not working right. So Edgar fixed it so I could get my car moved and back to the shop that put the thing in and he DID NOT charge me??? Who in these days does such kind and considerate things?? Like I said a rare beautiful sparkling diamond. Kind and considerate and just a rare find. I would take my car to him for everything if I lived in Sierra Madre. read more

I've used this place twice -- once to get a blinker replaced (which they did in 10 minutes!) and once to have my brakes worked on. Both times they were quick and professional. The brakes were done the same day, so I didn't have to leave my car. What's nice is you don't need an appointment (unlike Moe's), and sometimes you have to get your car in quickly. So it's nice to know that there's a place in Sierra Madre that you can take your car to without having to worry about making an appointment that won't be until several days later (again Moe's). read more

I took my car to Edgar recently after another mechanic at Just Tires told me I needed $3500 worth of work on car after I took it in for an oil change. It breaks my heart to be writing a negative review after going here for the past 9 years, but I was appalled by the owner's rudeness when he overcharged me for gas. The nozzle never shut off when being full and gas began spewing out of my car as I had stepped away to throw something out. Half of my car and my shoes were covered in gasoline. When I asked for the difference back due to the broken nozzle, he refused and and called me a cheater. When I said I couldn't possibly have fit in 11 gallons as the meter read he told me my gas tank is wrong and that it must be huge (I have a Prius and the tank had 3 bars when I came to fill). He began to yell over and over again that I was a cheater and to never come back again. The other employees have been nothing but great in the past 9 years but the owner was rude, entitled, and had no sense of customer service. read more

I've used this place consistenly for the past two years for oil changes. They are always quick and professional, and have always thrown in a free tire rotation. Just recently my car broke down. I called to ask when they could get me in, and they said they would look at it immediately. As soon as my car was towed there they began working on it. They had an answer for me within just a few hours. They walked me through what they found the problem to be, explained in detail why that problem would occur and what they needed to do to fix it.
