K Sandwiches is my favorite banh mi shop in SD. I was hesitant when I heard all of the positive reviews, but it lives up to its reputation! The baguettes are fantastic, and filled with ample amounts of protein and vegetables. I try to eat pescatarian, and I love the char sui tofu. They also have a wide selection of food and drinks outside of banh mi, including fresh baked goods, che, and Vietnamese coffees. The price points are great. This food is low quality. Most of the reviews I'm seeing seem to be a lot of people who've never really had bahn mì before so I understand them. However this is not. Good. Bánh mì. It's pretty bad actually and I went to Kearny High I wanted to love it. I've given it sooo many chances, the meat, the bread, seasoning. Just no. The PASTRIES ARE DRY and salty, there's NO airyness in the bread. I was going to get the mango pudding, but I opted out during this visit. I went up and asked the lady what was popular so I got 3 sandwiches: I got #9, marinated Grilled pork. My niece got #10, marinated Grilled beef. I got my sister also #9, minus the cilantro. At first I thought it was somewhat dry but after eating it more, I really enjoyed it. The grilled pork definitely was marinated and had great flavor, everything with the daikon, carrot and cilantro made the sandwich so delicious. It definitely had a little bit of spice to it. (even if you take off the jalapenos) The bread was absolutely delicious. 5/5 My niece did like theirs, i think the beef was marinated just like the pork. I think they found their meat a bit chewier than the pork. 4/5 I did love how you could order other items and I loved they have a little bakery to the left. I was going to get a few baguettes to go, but they were all sold out. (430 minute wait for next ones) I ended up getting 2 cheese croissant danishes, I thought they were ok. This is an unassuming spot that makes very, very good banh mi sandwiches. Are they the best in San Diego? I have no idea. They make other things, too, but it appeared to me that almost everyone ordered either banh mi sandwiches or coffee or boba drinks. The #1 sandwich provides a "variety" of cold cuts, whatever that means. The bread was soft and pillowy and the veggies were nice and fresh. It is a good sandwich but wasn't incredibly meaty, The #11 grilled chicken was a flavor bomb and seemed meatier than the #1. I loved it. They offer lots of fresh baked goods, pastries, and bread in the back. Everything looked very nice. You serve yourself and then bring your selections up to the front counter. I could easily have picked ten or more items that looked great. A proper banh mi requires excellent, ultra fresh bread and you get that here. Free parking in the lot but watch out. Once for breakfast and coffee. The other time I stopped for lunch. Service is quick and the staff is friendly. For my lunch visit I had a huge #14 Roast Beef on a Baguette and an espresso drink. I always drive by when I get my water refilled and the line is out the door. No line today!!! I ordered K's breakfast sandwich. It's a croissant with ham, bacon, eggs, cheese. 1st let's talk about the size. Holy moly it's bigger than my hand. It has lots of ham, good amount of eggs and 2 slices of bacon. When you get a bit with bacon it's perfect. Without bacon the eggs could use some salt. Over all really taste Ordering is confusing as there are 2 lines. One for sandwiches and one for the little Asian convenient store. I took the item to go which most people did but they have many inside and outside tables. Drove up specifically to K sandwiches because I woke up craving a Banh Mi, and although there are plenty of sandwich shops in Claremont/Kearny area, nothing beats this classic, traditional spot that has remained standing through the test of time. I loved K sandwiches when I was 18 before the remodeling, and I still love them 15+ years later. A San Diego staple you can't miss! Ps: There were no water bottles in the fridge to purchase, just a ton of sweet beverages. It'd be nice if someone would restock water bottles in their fridge at all times. Usually hit or miss... but mostly a hit when I'm starving and just want a banh mi to fix my life for a second. I still think about the pickled daikon and carrots from here. They're cut thicker than most spots which gives that really satisfying crunch. K Sandwiches has been around for years and is kind of a staple in this area. It's one of those reliable sandwich spots people have been going to forever. I remember coming here as a child with my family and a lot has changed since then. They now offer way more drinks, both handcrafted and bottled, plus a bigger selection of snacks and hot foods. I even found a bag of gummies I've been looking for everywhere... even H Mart didn't have them. Felt like I found treasure for $2.50, which is honestly one of those little wins in life. There are kiosks you can order from, or you can go up to the register, especially if you're paying cash or grabbing snacks and drinks. It was fairly busy around 1:30pm, which makes sense with all the nearby schools and businesses. We got the pate only banh mi and the #12 pork patty (nem nuong). I liked the kiosk ordering because you can customize everything. I added extra pickles and cilantro, and there's even an option to add sliced white onions which I appreciated. Both sandwiches were solid, but not as good as I remembered. The pickles didn't have that same punch. The brine leaned more light and slightly sweet, and I wish it had more acidity to balance out the richness of the pate and mayo. The cilantro was fresh overall, but some stems had a bit of browning which didn't affect taste too much, just the look. I also asked for both sandwiches to be cut in half but only one was. The bread didn't feel as fresh either.None of these are huge issues on their own, but together they do take away from what could've been a really great banh mi. I'll probably still come back when the craving hits, but it's one of those spots that can be really good... just not always consistent. read more

I've been coming here since my kids was little. I love their pastry and would often buy it for gifts for the teacher or my doctors. The bahn mi is sooo good! They also some Vietnamese dessert that's also delicious. It's really hard to find che in SD. I'm glad that they have some variety. Service is always excellent. I think the last time I was here was before the building burned down. Now, after rebuilding years later, I came back to visit and got some banh mi. It's been a long, long time! I got the #1 banh mi and it was fresh and delicious. They have two kiosks on the left side now so if you want, you could put in the order yourself or you can wait in the line for a cashier. Most people ordered from the cashier. I wanted to grab some pastries too, but knew I would be ordering 3 banh mis to last me a couple of days, so I didn't want to be a piggy. I ate one and it was filling and satisfied and saved the other two for later! Solid banh mi spot for San Diego. I'll be honest, I wasn't a fan at first, I used to prefer A Chau Restaurant or Avian Water, but lately I've found myself choosing K Sandwiches first. I pass by this shop very often after I started playing pickleball and had been wondering how the banh mi was. My friends were in town visiting, and we decided to finally check it out! It's located in the huge building in the corner of the Kearny Square plaza on the intersection of Linda Vista Rd and Mesa College Dr. Very hard to miss as it's the biggest individual shop building in the plaza. There's a parking lot with ample stalls. I got their K's Special Combo banh mi, and my boyfriend got their Chinese Sausage with Egg banh mi. The banh mi were huge! A great deal honestly. But it seemed like it was lacking their pickled vegetables... sad. We split our huge sandwiches for us to try both. The special combo was yummy! Flavorful and packed with a variety of different proteins. I thought it lacked a bit of pate which usually was the one that brought out the flavor of the combo banh mi. The Chinese sausage with egg was good. The egg added to the sausage and wasn't as "boring" LOL. But the flavor didn't wow me as it was just those two things. The bread wasn't my favorite as it was the kind of French bread that hurts the roof of your mouth. Overall, this shop was a relatively good place for banh mis. Finally stopped in FTO pick up a quick lunch and we were greeted with a busy Saturday afternoon, snacks and baked goods galore, and of course, an extensive Banh mi menu. I like there are options to order at the counter or order from a touch screen menu. I also like there are plenty of premade foods, sides and dessert available to pick up and go. We ordered a ham and cheese croissant and the #9 pork Banh mi sandwich, and it was so quick to order and pick up the sandwich! The croissant was bigger than my head, filling and fluffy. The Banh mi was massive, easily from my elbow to fingertips. I had a second meal from the sandwich it was amazing. The pork was cooked and seasoned so well, plenty of veg and the bread was so good! I did end up buying a small container of pickled daikon and carrots to go for the added veggies for later and they did not disappoint. I think it was $4.50 for a 16oz container.
