I really was looking for something to hit the spot today. I started the day with my homemade smoothie which was perfect. Then, as the day progressed I wanted to have a good lunch so I would not be that hungry for dinner and just lightly snack. So, I was craving a deli sandwich. I decided to try Rubicon Deli in Mission Hills area. I kept hearing how their sandwiches were so good. I ordered a tuna sandwich, and the girl behind. the counter was helpful and friendly, but did inform me they were out of a few bread types. I order a Dutch crunch type of bread for a tuna sandwich. They serve half and whole sandwiches so I just ordered a half which was still a good-sized portion . I wish I would have liked this sandwich because I drove 20 minutes to try this place. The bread was too dry and super messy because it was so dry. The rest of the sandwich was okay. The tuna was bland tasting as it did not seem like it was seasoned. The veggies on it were the only thing that made the sandwich decent tasting. It was nothing to write home about or drive out of my area to try it . I was hungry and paid so I had to eat it. Although, I threw away the other half of it . It was not horrible, but it was not tasty either. The service was good and they had plenty of tables to sit down inside. But, I also noticed the tables were not being wiped down and under the tables there were food crumbs all over. Luckily, I had my trusty sanitizer for the table. The fact no one was cleaning as it needed to be done was a turn off. Restaurants and places of businesses need to take it serious and keep it clean everywhere so no one gets sick. I was disappointed with my experience. I ordered the jalapeño bread, but my order came with Dutch bread instead. I called to politely let them know, and I was told that when they run out of jalapeño bread, they substitute it with Dutch bread. The issue is that I wasn't asked if that substitution was okay. I'm allergic to Dutch bread, so it's not something I can simply eat instead. To make it even more confusing, my friend ordered the same jalapeño bread and received the correct bread, so I'm not sure why only mine was substituted. I understand that items can run out, but customers should be informed before a substitution is made, especially when it involves food that could affect someone with allergies. I paid for jalapeño bread and expected to receive what I ordered or at least be given the option to choose a different substitute or a refund. read more

It's nice and air conditioned inside and no one was here, so service was fast. We ordered the rich boy and the stallion, both with Dutch crunch bread since that's the most popular one on Yelp (also because they were out of garlic cheese). The dining room was empty and we got our order about 15 mins after we ordered. It's kinda hard to hear your name being called from the dining room, so be mindful of that. I accidentally grabbed the wrong order from the same woman who took my order, so we were both at fault there. We got whole sandwiches with the intention of eating one half there and saving the rest for home. The sandwiches themselves were HUGE. You definitely get what you pay for. I was between a few options but eventually went with the "Giddy Up" which consisted of Prime roast beef, Swiss, roasted red pepper tapenade, caramelized onion, wild arugula, and creamy horseradish. Ended up doing a take out order which included said big a** sandwich, Achin' 4 Bacon, whole (duh) on Dutch crunch bread, as well as Rubicons house chips. Also I'm a sucker for a chocolate chip cookie so added a bag of their mini cc cookies. No lies here, sandwich was girthy. Loaded with hella amounts of turkey, bacon, avocado and of course that bread. This thing was something else; basically you needed to be a snake and unhinge your jaw for that first bite. I somehow managed this feat and was loving it until I roughed up the roof of my mouth. Some like that, me, well I'm dainty. So I picked off all of the crunch I could to minimize its painful effect. Overall great sandwich! House chips were smacking! Be sure to order a side of their house ranch dressing for dipping. These chips are crazy crispy and well seasoned, worthy of any mom's Tupperware party. Mini chocolate chip cookies, get these! 5 stars it is, one of my fav sandwich places in SD. First the customer service is great the Tio's & Tia's working there are great, friendly, fast & so are the younger workers. Lines might be long at times but they move fast. I suggest bring your own drinks because their fountain drink options are just ok, plus you'll save money. And I love that they give a free cookie wrapped in each sandwich, you still should buy a bag of cookies tho they are very good. Waffle chips are good too. Now for the sandwiches, I've had 3 & loved all 3. My fav is the Rubicon Special on pesto bread, main ingredients, smoked turkey, pesto mayo Gouda cheese, love it. Hog's Breath on Dutch Crunch bread is also winner & a go to for me as is the Super Mario, can't go wrong with any of those. Definitely a grab and go type of location as the only offer bar style curb seating directly in front of the store. Amazing customer service from Mr. Jose. Almost thought the place was a lot smaller when first walking in due to the narrow section at the register, so it was nice to discover that further down the line they had booths, tables and high chairs to sit at (plus outdoor). Ended up ordering the cranie which was their take on a turkey and cranberry sandwich, and that turned out really good. $12 for Half A Sandwich is kind of steep in my opinion! This was my first time there and they said, "what bread would you like?" And lazily pointed behind them and I read the board, but choices didn't sound like bread. So, I asked... "is it the ones in bold?" Because the only thing that sounded like bread was wheat. He didn't really respond...but there was a line forming behind me and I was getting anxious because of that, so I chose randomly. I was still quite confused -- I wish the menu used up more of the negative space to clarify about it! I was still lost and just said pesto. I was thinking it was a spread that came on the bread lol. I went with the Rubicon Special and asked for no Gouda. Overall, the sandwich was good... I like the roasted red pepper tapenade and amount of lettuce that was on it. The roasted Turkey was nice. Apparently it came with pesto mayo, but the flavor was so light I could only taste the pesto on the bread. While this was a nice lunch, I don't think it's worth the price point of ~$12 ($11.49). Maybe if it included a bag of chips! Wrapped up with my sandwich was a mini cookie (but it was soft). I noticed later on that they had Flavored San Pellegrino and IBC Root Beer. Great selection! If you share with a friend, you can split the cost of the sandwich and it is much more reasonable. Not bad, the space was clean and there was outdoor and indoor seating.
