I've tried the other 2 Filipino stores/food deli in Union and I think this one is the best. The $8 rice lunch combo with 2 items for most people is lunch and dinner but for me its a siesta lunch with no meetings in the afternoon. The lady is nice. She explained the dishes I asked about. Like if the soup is sour? It's not bad! I can eat it but I need a warning if the soup has vinegar. Like Hot and sour from the Chinese spots. The key variables are in the title! i think credit card is accepted but i paid in cash. i will stop by to get ingredients for shaved ice when its summer time. I.always have a soft spot for small business that work hard. So this place is totally my place, which is a small grocery store with a full selections of cooked food. First impression, Very busy places, people keep coming in to order take out Traditional Philippino food. Kabayan is a small Filipino store on busy Stuyvesant; it's one of three that I know of in Union. There's extra parking behind the establishment if the side street spots are filled. Long story short, there is a little bit of everything inside: A small area with a number of vegetables and fruits, common packaged goods and various ingredients, and a hot food section. For the most part, I try to avoid buying anything here since a lot of the products are too pricey. I could just go to a larger Asian market where the same products are a bit cheaper. You're paying double for certain items compared to other places. From what I noticed, it also seems as if they do not stock up on their products often. The hot food section has an alright selection, but I was pretty shocked to find out that I could not get my tilapia as a part of a combo meal and that everything else (even rice) is separate. I might as well order a regular combo then. Kabayan is "okay," butI don't see myself coming often unless I absolutely need something here. read more

Hands down the best Filipino restaurant in the area. They catered a party I hosted for family visiting from out of town. Like many Filipinos, my family sets high expectations for the food to be the same or better than their home cooking, and this place did not disappoint! My cousins are STILL talking about the lumpia shanghai. It's that good. Several other reviews have talked about the great customer service, and I agree. The prices are reasonable and the staff are so friendly, warm and welcoming. If you stop by, don't forget to load up on grocery items too. my favorite filipino food/corner store. growing up, their filipino snack selections were the best. one christmas, I went home to the philippines and fell in love with a drink called C2 (it was really big thing when I was in the philippines). When I came home to NJ, I was so happy to see that Kabayan stocked up on C2 drinks. They always have something yummy in their hot foods section. Their pancit is tasty and their filipino spaghetti is one of my favorites. They also usually have good adobo, kare kare, diniguan, bicol express, or binagoongan. the people who work there are super friendly and for every party or get together we'd have at my house, we always had kabayan cater. we usually get the pancit and the lumpia for catering and everyone's always enjoyed the food a lot. read more

Warning! Food here are super over dose cholesterol!!! I know Filipino food are always oily, but come on. Everything here is either sinking in oil. From Menudo to Dinuguan. Example I bought several BBQ sticks and half of it literally were pork fat. I also bought a medium Pork Adobo to go and half of it are also pork fat. I did not know until I got home for it was covered in sauce. It's cheating your customers. The grocery store itself I would say is fairly organized, but the owner Nonong Ballinan OMG.. very suspicious looks at you like you are stealing something. I'm just checking and reading the nutrition facts of an item and his at your back on his cellphone checking on you. Come on dude you are in America, you are not in the Philippines. I have been here twice in two days. The food is fresh and soooo delicious. The options change daily. It's probably a good idea to take the food with you. However it is comfortable to eat there , but more like a quick place than a Sit down. The service staff is also super friendly. The prices are incredibly reasonable and the portions are enough for 2( the small combo ) 2 dishes and rice ! read more
