I just went to Perrotti Meats for the first time yesterday! I've had their chicken salad before when a coworker brought it to work, and it was so good that I made the 45-minute trip just to get more.... and it was so worth it! Hands down the best chicken salad I've ever had!!! The staff was incredibly welcoming and kind, and even the customers were so friendly. I've been picking up food here for over 25 years. I've never had anything bad. All the meat is fresh and we like picking up package entrées for dinner or to put in the freezer. This time, I had the beef, lamb, and chicken kebabs. I love lamb and these were excellent. My only issue is that I never get an itemized receipt so when someone asks me what I paid for a specific item, I don't always know. The prices are super fair for the meats and fresh take home Italian food in small metal trays to be cooked in your oven . They have a large selection of fresh prepared Italian food , chicken dishes , fresh homemade soups to take home . They also sell fresh bore heads meats and chesse which were priced like any supermarket. They sell fresh jarred vodka sauce , meat and many other types of homemade sauce . Just amazing place for fresh Italian food and meats! Last year we even bought all our meats from this butcher frozen them pack them in our suit took the to Aruba to cook at our timeshare. I have fond memories of growing up in Brooklyn where food shopping sometimes meant going to a local meat market to pick up the essentials to create a meal. Usually there was a butcher or two who would offer some friendly banter and help answer any questions you may have had. Perrotti's takes this tradition and keeps it going in a busy 21st century full of specialty stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Whole Foods and TJ's, but sometimes you want a bit of the old neighborhood. Located inside a small building in a charming section of Cranford, you can tell this is an Old Skool business from the outside. The building is mostly tones of silver, beige and white. There is a huge window display and you can peek in to see some of what the shop has to offer. When you enter there are prepared foods in various areas including a giant cooler in the center with all sorts of pre-prepared foods like their *awesome* stuffed cabbage. I am also very fond of their macaroni salad, which is among the best I've ever had. Further back is the meat section where you can get anything from a steak to in-house made sausages to cold cuts. I tried the spicy Italian sausage and it was excellent! If you have questions about anything the crew there is happy to answer your questions. They chatted with everyone (while still keeping the line moving) and were super friendly. They make you happy to be shopping there and that is a skill. Last week on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend I got to Perrotti's at 5:00 which is when they close. The guys inside were scrambling to get things cleaned up and set for the next day. I felt terrible but they were awesome! They got me the sausage and fresh mozzarella I went in for and I kept apologizing because I hate holding people at the end of the day, and they kept saying "don't worry about it!". The owner looked at me and said "anytime we're here, we are always open!" You really don't find that anymore. I really appreciate them not just saying "we're closed". The sausage was fantastic! It was tasty and not too much fat like other places can be. The mozzarella was fresh and made a great caprese salad! They have so many more delicious items to choose from like deli meats, fresh meats and a ton of Italian speciality items! A visit to the medical imaging center next door brought us to Perrotti's. Many good memories of the old school neighborhood Italian butcher and deli shops of my younger years in Bloomfield and Newark's North Ward made opening the door to Perrotti's virtually unavoidable. In retrospect, it was a great idea; an introduction to a market that I intend to return to with some frequency. While there are a few rows of canned and jarred provisions, mostly imported, it was the butcher cases and the refrigerated storage that really caught our attention. An upright unit offered eight varieties of homemade ravioli, including several not often found. They're packed by the dozen in flat cardboard boxes and gave all visual indication of being fresh. This point, however, highlights one of my very few gripes-- there aren't freshness dates on most of their prepared items. An adjacent case offered a limited, but attractive, range of cold-packed meats. We bought a sealed package of two smoked loin pork chops. They were genuinely smoked, rather than "smoke flavored," tender and delicious. Also seen were at least a dozen varieties of homemade soups in quart containers. Although most looked quite appealing, my wife and I were put-off by a pink (tomato?) tinge to their chicken noodle soup. We may give this curiosity a try in the future, but on this day there were far too many other items that we wanted to try first. Opposite that case was a horizontal open-top refrigerator, a full aisle long and (like the butcher station) old-fashioned white enameled steel. Inside were dozens of heat-and-eat Italian dishes: chicken, pork or eggplant Parmesan, meat or cheese lasagne, various types of meatballs, baked ziti, arancini, pork and turkey sausages, canolli, chicken marsala and many others. We tried the eggplant Parmesan that evening; it was superb and fully aligned with the standards of an upscale Italian restaurant. The homemade sauce was excellent and perfectly balanced, both Romano and Parmesan cheeses were quite apparent and an abundant quantity of thinly-sliced and very lightly breaded eggplant was perfectly cooked. The assembled dish wasn't oily, yet hints of olive oil were detected. A small aluminum pan more than adequately fed two hungry adults; atop more pasta it would have easily fed a family of four. Along the back wall of Perrotti's was the cashier station and butcher area. There is a chalkboard on the wall behind the butcher area, but almost all prices were shown as "Mkt" (market price). It was obvious that only a small sampling of their meat was behind the glass, but we did see what appeared to be pre-cooked stuffed pork roast, tomahawk rib eye steaks and a few other cuts. The tomahawks appeared to be lacking in marbling, but I would bet that a higher grade of steak is also available. I was curious as to why, with so much meat to work with, their deli offerings were limited to "Boar's Head," rather than homemade meats. Perhaps this is simply a pet peeve, as I'm personally not particularly fond of that brand. We had some brief conversation as our order was being rung-up; it was friendly and welcoming. Perrotti's is inexpensive only for those who appreciate high-quality food; certainly a bit more than most supermarkets. Our visit to Perotti's was enjoyed, and will be repeated. read more

You can't beat Perrotti's for quality meat and poultry. The great selection of prepared foods are wonderful too and make it easy to have home cooked meal every night of the week! We love their meat balls and our daughters love the turkey meat balls. The chopped meat is freshly ground and can't be compared to anything you'd buy in a supermarket. They'll even tell you how to cook things if you're not sure or want to try something new. It's a real local gem, worth a trip to Cranford ! read more

This is an old-school, neighborhood Italian deli and meat market, featuring a selection of steaks and other cuts of fresh beef, chicken, and pork. Good homemade pork sausages and Italian specialties. I like their homemade rice pudding--creamy, and not too sweet. Miles of isles of their homemade, jarred pasta sauces. Full selection of cold cuts for sandwiches which they make to order, or by the pound. I don't know if they bake anything on the premises. I bought some mini cannolis, prepackaged in a tray, that were not good, and Italian bread in bags from Calandra's bakery in Newark. read more

My first time in this place was yesterday and the customer service I experienced was over the top impressive. My mother bought be a couple meals over the phone with her credit card for my birthday and all I had to do was go pick them up. Nick Perrotti is so nice I was blown away! He explained all the meals and showed me everything then we had a great 15 minute conversation about babies and hospitals lol. They have things like stuffed chicken breast or stuffed peppers ready to cook and it's delicious.
