I made a catering order with 24 hour notice, and they delivered. Was so happy with the sandwiches and penne vodka (full tray). I highly recommend considering them if you are hosting a small event at your house. They do charge 3 percent extra for credit cards but that has become pretty much the norm for small business. Overall really good sandwiches and yummy bread. Penne vodka is the best I've had in Jersey this far. read more

it's been almost ten years since I last reviewed Massimo Deli in Kenilworth. I still shop here on a regular basis, and if there is a better Italian deli in the area, I haven't heard about it. They do a very big lunch sandwich business. Actually, I don't like their Italian sandwich rolls, they are very crusty on the outside. Like break your teeth or cut the roof of your mouth crusty. I do, however, love their sliced to order Imported cold cuts. My regular choices include their peppery prosciuttini ham, rich mortadella, aromatic sliced provelone cheese, and fabulous hard salami. They have a very artful way of slicing the cold cuts paper-thin, and at an obtuse angle for maximum flavor. I also love their homemade ricotta, mozzarella, fresh romano cheese, roasted peppers w/garlic in oil, and stuffed olives. Although it's not Italian, they also make a really good potato salad. Their homemade sausage is very good, too, although I actually prefer the Italian sausages at the Union Pork Store, another gem of a place. Of course, Massimo has a large selection of imported packaged foods and artisan dried pastas from Italy, higher quality than anything you'd find in a supermarket. Also canned and jarred delicacies, olive oils and balsamic vinegars, even an assortment of packaged snack cakes from Italy. Massimo is a great food resource if you love to cook Italian food, or just want to pick up some pre-made entrées from their freezer case. read more

Not sure why this deli has such great reviews. We ordered the specialty sandwich platter from the catering menu. There was no balsamic on the sandwiches that were supposed to have it. I asked for no arugula on one of the sandwiches but it wasn't left off. The provolone was chunks of hard provolone that fell off, not appropriate for sandwiches. The chicken cutlet was soggy and microscopic. The bread wasn't great, just soft Italian bread not hard Italian bread like a sub sandwich should be on. We called at 9am to see if we could change the order from 12 servings to only 10 servings and were told it was too late, but we weren't scheduled to pick up the order until 3:30pm. Pastosa in Cranford is 1000 times better than this deli. Won't be ordering from here again. read more

You're out of your territorial comfort zone (10+ miles away from home) and looking to refuel after giving blood (a shameless "humblebrag" you say? You bet'cha!) at a Knights of Columbus in Union. After a few missteps (like Siri doing her best to lure me into some 50-mile adventure when I clearly wanted to stay within Union) I found myself in front of Massimo. While dillydallying outside (only three people allowed inside at a time during these COVID-times) I walked in and knew I found a great little deli. It's clean and bright. All the expected staples lined the walls (dried pasta, bags of taralli) and fridges (cheeses, pre-made meals) and behind the counter all those "greatest hits" (roasted peppers, broccoli rabe, marinated artichoke hearts) were trying to get my attention. Not seeing if/when I'd find myself in Kenilworth again - I loaded for bear and made the journey back home. Their Italian 'Super Sub' was massive (I had to surrender after just a half) and delicious. Their breaded chicken cutlets were solid. Their arancini (with sausage instead of ground beef you say?!) were dense and delightful. (The rest of the goodies purchased were all excellent as well.) My one and only gripe? At 25+ minutes in one direction... this deli is just a wee bit too far out of range to become one of my regular weekend stops. read more

The best Italian deli around. Their sauce is Sunday sauce worthy. Love their fresh mozzarella with roasted peppers, arugula w/balsamic vinegar. 5 star sandwich. What's not to love about Massimo's. The packaged foods are delicious and a great staple to have in my freezer. The homemade Motz is yummy and so creamy. It's amazing. I love all their fresh pastas and their vodka sauce is lite and so tasty with the fresh pastas !! Now for the sandwiches one is better than the other. God I love this place. They have the best subs hands down. My husband surprised my for my birthday and brought me here. We got an Italian sub whole with all the fixings. We took it home as they don't have seating there to eat. But that's the best part because once we got home and I was able to sink my teeth in it all the seasoning and oil/Vinegar soaked the meats and bread it was just so perfect. I love the smell of the fresh meats and cheeses. It's definetly an authentic Italian store and you can buy the best pasta and ingredients there too. I love the smell of an Italian deli when you walk in and you'll get that the moment you step inside. I live in a neighboring town but we come here often for fresh sandwiches and sliced deli meats. They have a great selection of deli meats, Italian canned goods, prepared meals, breads, pastas, creative sandwiches, and frozen delicacies as well. Everything is always fresh and tasty. There is something about the bread that makes those sandwiches something special. The service is always good and friendly and the prices are reasonable. It's located in downtown Kenilworth and there is ample street parking as well as a parking lot behind the deli. It has a very good reputation and local following and it's no secret why. When my Italian mother comes from New York, she always wants to visit Massimo's. I think that should say it all. read more

One of the greatest delis around. The sandwiches are so big here! My husband and I can usually split one sandwich for lunch. They really do pack the meat and everything inside well. I typically go for the House special which is a little similar to in Italian sandwich but the dressing is delicious. Picked up a sandwich here for lunch. I ordered a turkey and cheese with lettuce, tomatoes, onions oil and vinegar . I had the half and it was def. a decent size. Just like most deli's they stuff the sandwich with so much meat! But that's fine, for the price your paying for you get more! The bread was super fresh and the place was also clean! The only thing was parking. They are located on a busy street so there is only street parking. I paid $8 for the sandwich which is fairly decent. Next time I will def ask for more oil and vinegar, I felt it was missing a little flavor. If your around this area I would def. recommend this place. read more
