Lambe shank entree as originally served, with rice & half of a pita, lettuce, tomatos, green sauce that he didn't taste

Arrived on Monday around 1:15 pm for lunch. Son, who had been wanting one last lamb shank before he moves to a town that does not have any restaurant that sells lamb shanks, agreed to try this basic restaurant not too far from our new house. One table was occupied when we got there, and one worker was about to eat his lunch at another table. He moved to the kitchen so we could use the table. Lamb shanks did not take as long to be served as at our usual restaurant in Tower Grove, so son wondered if it was pre-made. It was also drier that what we're used to getting. Rice was plentiful in his as well as my "Eggplant over rice". We both ate less than half of the rice and took the rest home to eat with our own meats. My order was not worth the $14.95. I had originally thought about getting the "side" version that was half the price (comes with pita), and probably should have, since their rice is nothing special. Lamb shank is decent for the lower price, but sides elsewhere are better. Owner is very nice. He asked us after we ordered if this was our 1st time, and where we heard about him (on Yelp of course). When we were throwing away our trash and putting the platter on their cart he came out of the kitchen to say bye and come again.

Have you ever had a meal from a restaurant for the first time that makes you question every decision you've ever made for dinner that didn't include their food?! Just had that experience with Kabul Express. Thanks to Lauren R. I discovered this amazing, fresh, authentic, affordable food from Kabul Express. We ordered Chicken Tekkah Masala (comes served on a bed a rice with half a pita bread), Veggie Sambosa (comes three to an order with a bright green spicy vinegar-based salsa), and a giant Beef Gyro (all wrapped up in foil for easy holding). The pita bread is soft and the chicken in the Tekkah Masala is super tender. Like, almost melt in your mouth tender. Hot tip: order double meat and spicy sauce on your gyro to make it twice as filling and twice as good. Parking is on the side of the building. We placed our order online. Food as ready right on time. Contactless pick up because all the to go orders were on tables by the door.

Wanted some curry for dinner and my boyfriend found this place not far from us, went in and was greeted warmly by the owner. We ordered the Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala as our main entrees and they did not disappoint! Very flavorful and had great portion sizes. We ordered a strawberry lemonade boba drink that was refreshing and some baklava as a dessert. The baklava was so soft and yummy! After finishing our food, the kind owner gave us free homemade ice cream that was probably the best ice cream both me and my boyfriend have tasted. Highly recommend if you want some good food and as great atmosphere.

Call ahead if you are in a rush, though... the food is made to-order and may take a bit to come out. Just be patient or plan ahead-- it is WORTH your wait! The owner, Kauash does EVERYTHING himself. He owns and runs the place, takes all the orders, and makes all the food himself. And he is the NICEST person ever. He gave our toddler 2 free cookies while we waited for our food. Delicious food. I'm typing fast because they are getting ready to close but this place needs to go on your "must visit" list. I had the falafel and hummus wrap. No complaints or feedback. It was perfect. Spouse had the chicken kabob and it was a big portion for seasoned chicken, flavorful rice, a salad and pita. Again, no complaints or feedback. I could have eaten both of our dinners. Soda in a can which isn't my favorite but I'll look over that because the food was just that good. Support this business! Yum!

So, so good, modestly priced, fast and friendly service--this place is the definition of a "hidden gem" (I live minutes away and didn't know it existed until I found it on google). I got chicken kebab plate. Nice crispy salad, perfectly seasoned grilled meat, fluffy pita, all over a huge portion of jasmine rice. Mint chutney-ish sauce was awesome. Gonna ask for hot sauce too next time. 10/10

THE best Afghan food I have ever had! That said, this was my first real introduction to Aghani food, and I was very impressed. The staff was friendly and engaging and the food was generously portioned and full of flavor. I had the chicken tikka masala and my dining compatriot had the special, which was a chicken stew. Both were phenomenal dishes with an excellent balance of sweetness and spice. Both served with a rice... And let me tell you about this rice... This long grain brown rice served with little sweet raisins and shredded carrots was, by far, the best rice I've been served at any restaurant. Perfectly complimenting the spice of the dishes and practically begging to be eaten. This quaint location is unassuming at first, but don't let that deter you. The food and pricing are well deserving of your time. A special note to the two staff that were there this afternoon: The color of your walls and the linoleum on your floor don't mean a thing!! You keep putting out food as good as today's was and there's not a bad thing anyone can say about your restaurant. :) read more

Kabul Express is by far a gem. I've had some great Afghan food and their food is as good as it gets. Great appetizers, kabobs and desserts which are made fresh to order. The freshness and quality of food is something very vivid in every bite. Wherever you are in Saint Louis this place is a worth a drive to go and indulge in some flavorful Afghan cuisine. The owner provides great service and is very personable. Keep up the good work guys.... read more

Wow. Just wow. It's a tiny place, but the flavor is BIG. Four small tables seating two people each, but they have carry out and delivery. Every ingredient is fresh and tastes great. I ordered their chicken wrap and it was amazing. Very different, but in a great way. Service was excellent; the guy was very nice. The atmosphere is pretty cool. While eating, I got to enjoy watching a game of cricket (and trying to understand what was happening because I'm not familiar with the sport). The only thing that was not all that great were the drinks. They only carry cans of soda if that's what you want and you need to purchase them individually. It wasn't too bad though, I just had to limit how much I drank. All in all, there's a reason why this has five stars on Yelp and it's because it's exquisite. read more

This place is tucked away, but it's absolutely worth it to come here. The food was AMAZING! savory, nutrious. Very fast service, owner is very friendly. It's food without pretentiousness, and all kinds of love. Try the dessert, the square one(not sure what it's called), it's just the right amount of sweetness, with slight aroma of rose water. I got the beef kabob plate with rice, pita and a spicey green sauce and it was AMAZING. The beef was tender and cooked perfectly, the rice perfectly seasoned and the green sauce was delicious! Everything came up super fast and the couple that was inside were so sweet and even gave me a bottle of water because it was so hot outside. I will definitely be back very soon! Yummm read more

Driving from Chicago to KC and found this little hole in the wall place to grab a bite to eat. It was a total of 13 of us that stopped in & ordered a variety of food. We were just hungry and didn't really care much for the decor. Our food came out FRESH & seeing that it was so many of us - 1 person taking our order and same person cooking the meal. It came in a really good timely manner. I ordered the Chapli kabab roll & WOW! This is what an authentic chapli kabab tastes and smells like! Everyone of us loveddd our food! We are leaving sunday and plan to come back to this place! Good job on this resturant and good luck! read more

I came in looking to have my craving of Lamb Kabuli Polau, and I was more than satisfied! A very helpful portion, the lamb was just the way I love it (falling off the bone), and the best was their chutney with the rice and the potato roll. Amazing flavor! Will come back again! Kabul Express is a tiny Afghan restaurant located off the beaten track, a 1/2 block from Broadway in Lemay. There only 8-12 seats inside and a table outside, but they made rom for a sofa . The owner is very friendly. I had the lamb curry special. The lamb was very tender and it was spices perfectly. My dining mate had falafel and samosas, both vegan and the owner surprised him with a complimentary salad. Everything was good. My only complaint be that they only have bottled water. A restaurant that I will visit again! read more

Drove past this place today, glad I turned around. My wife and I ordered beef kabobs and chappali kabob. The beef kabobs were amazing. I've commented on this place before and must do it again after my visit tonight. I woke up from a nap hungry as a hippo and didn't feel like going far to grab a bite. I decided to come back here but to try something different and I'm glad I did. This place is merely blocks from my place. I had the beef kabob and it came with rice, half a pita and some green sauce that really added to the already great flavor of the beef. He cooked it medium and nailed it. I think it's hard to cook small chunks of meat medium but he sure did. They were tender, flavorful and a nice size serving to boot. The rice is a long grain with carrots and raisins. It tastes fantastic too. Above all else, the owner here is awesome. He's friendly, considerate and kind. Instead of having me wait in silence like most places he strikes up a conversation and tries to get to know his patrons. I appreciate that and really like a place where everybody knows your name ;). This place has 5 stars for a reason. I was looking for something new and close to home and what I found was an experience. We chose the beef gyro and baklava, both exceeded our expectations. The gyro has tender meat, an amazing sauce, and is put together phenomenally. The baklava (although my first just like the gyro) was flakey, sweet, and fresh. As close as this place is we are going to return frequently, and will urge others to do so read more

This place is awesome! Definitely wasn't expecting such delicious food, and this was one of the best chicken tikka masala dishes I've ever had! The rice that came with it was amazing with a hint of sweetness. We also ordered the gyro, and the tzatziki fries which were both delicious. We were on another evening of what do you want for dinner, I don't care. Got on Yelp and found this little gem. Ordered take out online. Drove over and found the small place. Two young guys were working. There are three small tables and a couch, a tv and some pictures from Afghanistan as decor. The food was served promptly, the men working were super polite. We got home and devoured the samosas. My wife had chicken tikka masala which was very good. The chicken had a grilled almost tandoori taste and the sauce was perfect, the rice was wonderful. I had a gyro. Also very good, competitive with all the other gyro I have had in St. Louis. The bread was perfect. The prices are very reasonable. We will be back to support this locally owned business. read more

There are a lot of shawarma places in town, but we make the trek to Kabul express most of the time. Hands down our favorite. Our go to is the chicken shawarma, gyro, falafels, and the eggplant appetizer. The baklava is incredible too. read more

I love this place! The food is delicious and the meat is tender. The guy working the counter is very nice and makes you feel at home. The 1st time here I ordered the lamb shank plate on a weekend and it was enough food for 2 people and possibly a 3rd person if you added an appetizer. Either way it was great and the portion size was very generous. On my 2nd visit I got the beef and chicken kabob plate and it was so yummy. Again, the portions were plentiful. I'd eat here every day if I could. So great to find a local eatery that make great ethnic food. Keep up the great work brother. May you and your business continue to prosper. read more

I've been meaning to check this place out for a while, and I finally got a chance. I should have tried this place sooner! The food was delicious and the service was great. I'll be making more visits in the future. There is a lot of variety and different things to try, so there is probably something for everyone. The only concern I had was with the parking. This place is located right on the corner of an intersection, which makes parking (and trying to get out of your parking spot) potentially a challenge. read more

We just enjoyed the best meal we have had in a very long time from Kabul Express. The samosas were light and crispy on the outside and spiced to perfection inside. We often make the eggplant appetizer a meal itself because it is so good- while the salad is fresh and bright, perfect for a July meal in St. Louis. But the chicken kabobs with rice are something not to be missed. The chicken is moist and flavorful and the rice has the unexpected sweetness of shredded carrots and raisins. SO GOOD. Easily 6 stars. This is one of those places where you feel bad giving other restaurants 5 stars. The owner seems like a great guy too. The food always impresses me. If I lived closer I would eat there weekly for sure. The chicken is amazing. The rice is great. The beef is delicious. The portion size is not generous, but the quality is high. I think they take a little longer than other places, but good food takes time. Definitely my favorite restaurant in the area. read more

This place has some really good food. I ordered their chicken (that came on skewers) and they were delicious. The Rice was also pretty good. The only problem with this place was that one or two of my chicken pieces were undercooked. But overall, this place is decent. read more

This place was fantastic! Food is authentic and delicious. If you show up on Saturday or Sunday they will only be serving the "lamb shank" And I believe it's the only time to actually get the lamb shank. So worth the trip! If you haven't tried it yet stop by on a weekend. This is going to have to be a regular spot for me. read more

Established in 2016.

From Afghanistan, to India, and to the streets of Germany I’ve been cooking since I could hold a fork. Finishing business school in Germany, in 2008 I decided to make St. Louis my new home. 8 years later I realized that I have a chance to share my love for food; 5 months after, we were finally open to serve what most people would call “the best Afghan food I’ve ever tasted”. Our food is cooked with passion and love, and most of all with the customer in mind.

My husband always opts for the spiciest or nearly spiciest option and had his usual 1/4 dark chicken but chose flame-grilled corn on the cob, which was good but not the same as his usual rice. I decided to opt for the Falafel Rice with the lemon pepper sauce. I was not disappointed. The owner also provided us with a generous serving of hummus and pita on the house - a nice complement to the meal. I love that the food is prepared fresh and not sitting there waiting for me. It may take a bit of time but it is worth it. The new owner and staff are very friendly and happy to answer questions. The food is very good.
