I can't deny that I explored the Katchka menu well before finally venturing to this Portland institution. Wanting to experience it ALL, I had to edit my order 4 times. The introduction was a punch to the face from the horseradish martini I had ordered. Horseradish indeed. Just in time came the pickle plate and the bread. Salty and comforting. That horseradish martini. The restaurant is a bit loud, but only because it's full. Conversation is possible. Then came the raspberry beet soup with farmers cheese. Intriguing. Cold. Rich. Refreshing. Incredible. Potato dumplings. Cheese dumplings. Both topped with sour cream. I wanted 30 more. Chicken Kiev...(before we left we ordered a second) So very satisfying. Moist and buttery. The crunch! Cabbage rolls were next and they launched them into the stratosphere. The sauce alone had to have been cooked for at least four hours. Braised rabbit with sour cherry and butter...brown butter. The nuttiness with the richness of the rabbit is exceptional. It took me a week to decide how I would rate this. I'm still thinking about it week later and am ready to make another reservation so that I can measure twice. Maybe a third. And the staff? Incredibly knowledgeable, anticipatory and attentive. We left this place having felt privileged to the experience. A celebration, we'd had. And the $110 per person price tag with the 20% surcharge for tip...was was without question, worth it. My friends and I dined at Kachka after having drinks nearby at Scotch Lounge. We walked in without a reservation for a party of three at 8:00 p.m. on a Thursday evening and we were luckily able to get seated quickly, despite the restaurant being super packed. Between the three of us, we ordered their Instagram-famous dish -- the herring under a fur coat ($15), pkhlovani khachapuri ($16), garlic tvorog vareniki ($17 base + $2 for the garlic), and a golubtsi ($26). I also ordered a horseradish-tini ($14). Every dish was a hit and I would not hesitate to order the exact same items again on subsequent visits. The herring under a fur coat is a very fun dish to explore. The intention is certainly to eat a bit of every layer in a single bite, but it's enjoyable trying out every layer on its own as well. The stuffed khachapuri was hot, fluffy, and the inside had a wonderful mix of onions and chard. This stuffed bread was very enjoyable on its own, even without anything to dip it it. The garlic tvorog vareniki -- their boiled dumplings, was the primary dish we came for, and the ones here are fantastic. The inside is stuffed with a fine cheese and each bite was both savory and tangy. The broth that the dumplings sit in is light, yet flavorful. One order was more than enough for everyone in our party to enjoy a few. Last but not least, the golubtsi -- stuffed cabbage rolls, was the only item off of the "mains" menu we ordered. This was my first time trying out this dish so I didn't really have a good reference point on how the dish should taste. However, even without this knowledge, the dish was absolutely delicious. The broth was sweet and sour, and the stewed cabbage was tender, yet not mushy. If there's a single comparison I could draw, the flavors of the dish reminded me of Russian borscht you might find at a Hong Kong diner. On the side of logistics, a mandatory 22% service fee is included on the bill. After you pay with your card, there's nothing left to sign and you're free to leave when you're done. Overall, I had a great meal at Kachka. Kachka provided a wonderful opportunity for me to try out foods I rarely encounter in a cuisine I'm completely foreign to. Of the 3 excellent dinners we had in Portland, this was hands down my FAVORITE. Overall experience 10*/5. Service from beginning to end was friendly to uber-friendly and knowledgeable. Suggestions were made and we took some of them, but also watched the food go by our table and picked what looked and sounded good. Started with a vodka flight, which was a must! Fun and interesting - not at all medicinal and very sippable with the food. Best dish was the beet saffron caviar - a generous portion with yummy accoutrements. The bilini were to die for. Pickles were also great and the salad (from the dacha) was a nice, fresh accompaniment. Next came the pelmeni and they were PERFECT. Craveable. Still thinking about them and didn't want to share with the hubby. Pork skewer was good, but no match for the other dishes. Dessert was berry shortcake-like and a very good version of itself. Beautiful presentation on all of the dishes. Was not expecting to LOVE this meal so much ... not a cuisine we come across often. But the vibe, decor, service and the FOOD made it a meal to remember. Instead of ordering at the counter on the mezzanine level, we were greeted on the ground floor and handed menus at the bar, where we eventually ordered once we made our decisions. A good piece of advice is to always order dumplings. This remains a solid suggestion: the sour cherry variety served as both an appetizer and dessert. In between, I tried their combo meal, centered around a spectacular cabbage roll. My wife was thrilled with the Lavka Egg Sandwich, that seemed to have a bit of everything. Reservations are strongly recommended here, especially if you want to take advantage of their happy hour. We had a 5:15 seating and it only got busier and busier as the evening went on, which was really humming all night. I particularly love the happy hour menu because it lets you try a broader range of dishes at a fraction of the usual price. We decided to skip the mains and just order a bunch of cold and hot zakuskis, though I definitely had my eye on the Golubsti for a future visit. Everything we tried was fantastic and felt like a real journey through post-Soviet cuisine, specifically via Belarus if I'm remembering correctly. The tangy assortment of pickled vegetables was a great start, followed by the ultra-salty (in the best way) and sumptuous caviar on toast. The savoriness of the meat dumplings was a great yin to the yang of the richness and creaminess of the farmer's cheese dumplings, and the cod liver on rye was beautifully balanced by a snowfall of fresh horseradish on top. The standout, though, was the Herring 'Under a Fur Coat', which the menu describes as a Russian 7-layer dip and which was absolutely spectacular, airy, and light in a way I was not expecting when they first set the dish down in front of me. Our server was warm, attentive, and always happy to jump in with recommendations, which made the whole experience even better. The space itself was full of energy, and the shop upstairs is also a fun bonus, with everything from the same dumplings they serve in the restaurant, but frozen, to a wide selection of wines and liquors. Russian...not Russian...this is an interesting place and offers a unique experience that is not available in many cities in the U.S. The restaurant is nice with bar, single party seating, and community seating. The servers were pleasant and helpful. The food... it was hit or miss a little. There are only 3-4 main dishes, the rabbit was very good, but the cabbage rolls were just average. The potato pancakes served with the rabbit were prepared well, but had no complimentary sauce or flavor. The dumplings were tasty, the smoked fish snack app were good, but the rye bread was just okay. The lavash pocket was good, better with the dipping sauce. The server made us feel like we were in his Eastern European grandmother's house for dinner (in the most comfortable and welcoming way). Before going, I knew I wanted to try Herring Under a Fur Coat and the Rabbit in a Clay Pot, but I didn't realize dinner and lunch menus were different, so we were only able to try one of them. Herring Under a Fur Coat had these beautiful layers of raw fish, beets, potato, and egg. Our favorite of the meal! Baltic sprat buterbrodi were small finger sandwiches that had a good bite and mix of flavors. The Siberian pelmeni had the most familiar flavors as it reminded me of little Chinese dumplings but with a nice creamy sauce on top. Definitely coming back for dinner to try the other items! We have been here a handful of times and the food is good. They do have lots of options for alcohol. We have tried many of the vodkas and beers as well as wine. Those were always solid. This is a fun place to take family or friends that are not familiar with this type of food. Service is usually subpar if you ask me. Staff are not very attentive at times and sometimes makes you feel like you are rushed or bothering them. That's been my experience every time. I have also read recently that the staff may also be having a hard time with leadership. I think this might have been during the Covid times, but some of the things I read about the staff culture did not make me feel very good about wanting to go back to be brutally honest. Finally returned to Kachka after my first visit several years ago and it was just as good as ever. The Heirloom Tomato Salat was uber-fresh and delightful, especially on the glorious summer day we enjoyed that day. Dumplings are a must so this time I went all in on the meat dumplings, Siberian Polmeni? They were scrumptious and did not last long. My server suggested I mix up the flavors and get a mix of the cheese (Tuorog Vareniki?) and meat dumplings but I declined. After the fact I realized that I probably would have enjoyed the mix of flavors even more. Note to self. For entrees, I just had to have the Rabbit In a Clay Pot again. That was terrific also. I absolutely love this place. Kachka has such a lively fun atmosphere that it immediately puts you in a great mood the moment you walk in. I have been a few times now and each visit has been consistently excellent. I have often sat at the bar which I highly recommend. The interaction with the bartenders is fantastic and they are knowledgeable engaging and genuinely excited to talk about the menu and drinks. I usually stick with their vodka which is extensive and incredibly well curated. It is such a big part of the experience and pairs perfectly with the food. The zakuski are a must and I especially love the caviar and roe selections as well as Under a Fur Coat which is both comforting and surprisingly refined. Everything feels thoughtful without ever feeling heavy or overly serious. The menu is full of dishes that beg to be shared so coming with a few others is the best way to experience it. That way you can try as much as possible and explore the range of flavors they offer. Everything I have had here has been delicious and well executed. Kachka is one of those places that manages to be fun flavorful and memorable all at once. Wonderful foodie experience, and probably the top highlight of my Portland trip. Some background: I love food. I like to travel for food. When I travel, I want to the unique stuff, I don't want something I can just get at home. The Bay Area is my home, and I consider myself spoiled with all different cuisines to choose from. I don't care about ambience as long as my taste buds are happy. I have not had a lot of Russian food. Well at Kachka you get both a wonderful atmosphere and unique flavors! Wonderful ambience, wonderful vibes, great food, fantastic service. And a cute store upstairs where you can purchase merchandise like shot glasses, Kachka cook book, cans of sardines, other preserved foods, and of course their coveted horseradish vodka. Omg that horseradish vodka! I was pretty close to buying a bottle, but I didn't want to check in my bag for my flight...but I was close to paying that fee. Reservations definitely recommended. We somehow spent a good 3 hours at the restaurant. We went with the tasting menu, where everyone at the table has to participate. Everything was presented beautifully and tasted great. I believe we ordered two extra plates. Sadly it's been a few months so I can't remember the details but I remember everything tasted good, and we were so full at the end. We also tried ~5 flavors of their vodka. As I mentioned before, the horseradish vodka is amazing (it doesn't have that weird nasal feeling but you get the savory flavor). I think my second favorite would be strawberry and then earl grey. There was a slight hiccup-I found a piece of plastic in my food but the manager was extremely apologetic and took this incident very seriously. Literally flew to Portland just to have this meal with friends. Started with the pickle assortment, the stand out was the green tomato pickle with it's bright crunch. Next was the fried zucchini oladi, probably my favorite dish of the evening, light and crispy with a touch of sweetness from the corn. The short rib borscht was divine, personally would have loved bigger chunks of the beef in the broth. Then the dumplings came out: we ordered the Siberian pelmeni and the red pepper special for the evening. The slightly spicy, tomatoey sauce was perfect with the dumplings, it should definitely become a regular item on the menu. The cabbage rolls were hearty, and the shila plavi was creamy and comforting but the gremolata was vaguely fishy on my palate for some reason. We ordered: - beet salad -- one of our top dishes; something about the tahini sauce combined with the beets and toasted nuts just really hits - pickled things! Just nice to have as a side throughout the meal. - fish board -- if you like fishy things, you can't go wrong picking a couple that sound good. The bread/crackers the provide along with a schmear of butter are such a treat. - ***Siberian pelmeni*** -- the stars are for how blown away I was by this dish. I could eat this every day for the rest of my life. I could have eaten four more bowls of this. Something about that sour cream sauce, the bite of the dumplings dough, and the savory meat filling. SO GOOD. - Golubsti -- I really enjoyed the depth of flavor in the sauce here, sweeter than I'm used to with Polish golabki. - teas and treats -- this was a nice close to the meal, and felt authentic. Only criticism was that service was slow and a little consuming at times (different people dropping by for various things so we didn't know who our main server was), but it was busy and they had a large party in the back room. I appreciate their transparency about the service fee and their approach to compensating their employees well without significantly raising prices. It's good to see that it IS possible if leadership/owners are willing. She explained how everything worked and we got to ordering. We ordered the Siberian Pelmeni, Herring Under a Fur Coat, and the Borsch! Now I was pretty familiar with everything but the Herring toasts, and I will say that was the standout for me! It was perfectly savory with a touch of pickle from the herring and dill egg. The Pelmeni was pretty good, but pelmeni is just one of those things that taste pretty similar across the board in my experience. The borsch was fine, and the bread that came with was okay. For drinks, We got the Moscow Mule and Horseradish Vodka. The Mule at first had the strongest taste of ginger I've ever had in a mule. I liked ginger so I didn't mind, plus it went away after a while. The Horseradish infused vodka had such a strong horseradish taste, but that what you would expect. To start off we got tuorog vaseriki and siberian pelmere which are the savory dumplings. Overall, we liked the tuorog vaseriki ones the best, although they were both good. From the mains the chicken shashlik was well seasoned and cooked well. I think it was my favorite part of the meal, although it was a bit salty, but still good. The golubtsi was very comforting with the tomato and cabbage combo. As for the berries and smetana the berries balanced out the sweet of the whipped smetana and the cake. As for the drink I got the chaikhana which was quite nice. I enjoyed as the alcohol taste wasn't too strong and I enjoy the more citrusy drinks. Overall, a great dinner spot to go out with friends ( the more the better so you can try different things). read more
