Our dinner at Swiss Hibiscus was a truly special experience. Guy Fieri ate there! We stumbled upon the place by accident - I might have thought it was a coffee or dessert shop from the name, but that's on me. It's a cozy, comfortable space with a Swiss flag and one of those giant horns like in the Ricola ads. I ate with three people and we split up to tackle a good sampling of the menu. We had the Weinerschnitzel (chicken) and Jägerschnitzel (pork). The meal was well-paced. The salad dressing was unique but familiar, they serve it with hot, crusty bread and on the salad (cabbage and house) I could have drank the dressing. I shouldn't, but could have. The schnitzels were fantastic - both the brown butter and the brown gravy. Sides: Spätzle (the garlicky noodles) and the hash brown thing with the bacon. You guys, we ate EVERYTHING. We've never seen our 10 year old eat so much good food. (To be fair, the boy and I had only eaten Chex Mix that day while my wife was at the spa...but I digress.) We felt well taken care of. This was my first time visiting as an out-of-towner and I felt as welcome as visiting family for dinner. We finished the meal with the Lilikoi Cheesecake. We sit and look over the bottles of wine, choose a local Pinot Noir. A woman comes to our table and presents the bottle for tasting, as it should be. We ordered a rosti for an appetizer which doesn't disappoint, just like how I remember from Zurich. We both ordered dishes with spaetzle, schnitzel and goulash. I opt for a salad with the famous Martin's dressing while my wife gets a French onion soup she claims is the best she's ever had and that's saying something, because we've eaten 3 Michelin Star French onion soup so I try it and now I'm a believer. The chicken broth is so tasty, the onions and cheese are wonderful. It's the simple things really that can make one happy. After conversation and lots of eating, we soon find we've devoured our plates. It's been awhile since I had really good spaetzle so this was a treat. Service was attentive at every step. Great little intimate restaurant. I've read many good things about this place and I finally got to try it. It's small so I'd recommend a reservation if you can. You will have to order at their counter but you can sit down and look at their online menu before deciding. Their fresh rolls were so good! Crispy outside and pillowing inside. It comes with their home sauce which is like a mild thousand island. We tried the Roti with cheese and it's was so tasty, very well crisped potato hash brown. I picked the paprika schnitzel which was wonderful crispy and full of flavor. I loved their spatzel, almost like a slightly crisp buttery pasta. The dishes comes with a soup or salad. The mushroom soup was very good. My husband chose the jagerschnitzel which wasn't his favorite, a bit darker flavored one note. Service was great. The only reason I'm not a bigger fan is that since the tables are so close, you will hear the next tables conversation and in my case, a large party's loud laughter. There are very few places that service Swiss food. Additionally if Guy ate here, then it must be good enough for us. Jagerschnitzel gravy was really delicious. Chicken Wiernerschmitzel was ok, but tasted better with the gravy from my dish. Salad dressing was tangy and delicious. They even sell the salad dressing if you want to bring a touch of Swiss Hibiscus home with you. The bread was delicious, fluffy, and warm. They ran out of the Swiss apple pie dessert which was disappointing. Restrooms were clean. Make a reservation before coming here because the place only has a limited amount of tables. Holy moly! We're going to go somewhere else, changed our minds and ended up here and so glad we did! The menu is eclectic and the inside is very cute and cozy. I can't believe I just found out about this restaurant. What a great way to enjoy comfort German food that goes beyond brats and pretzels. I had Spätzl and became obsessed so when I searched Yelp I was able to find Sweet Hibiscus and see them offer so much more. Check out their menu online but they also have specials on their board when you walk in. We got lucky and were able to grab a spot for dinner without a reservation since we trekked through the rain but it does seem like a popular spot so I would recommend just booking a time in case. I really enjoyed the PAPRIKA SCHNITZEL and EMINCE ZURICHOISE. The prices are a little higher than what you might expect but worth it. The flavors have great depth and spices. The schnitzel was tender and soaked up the sauces and was delicious. I would recommend getting the SPÄTZLI w/ EMMENTALER CHEESE also. As good as the hype says! A cozy spot serving European/Swiss delicacy. Do make a reservation cause their space is pretty small. Everything was delicious and unique. We started off with their hot, crispy bread that was supposed to be dip with their house sauces. A great way to start the meal. We then had their Escargot, which was my first time! Loved how buttery and garlic it was. The Snails were cooked perfectly too. Each entreé came with a side and soup/salad. We got the Specials Beef Tenderloin with Cabbage Salad and Rösti and the Goulash with Mutigawny Soup and Spatzli. We loved them both but my winner was the Goulash. The pork was sooo tender and melty. The stew was super flavorful and it went perfectly with the fresh spatzli that was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The soup was tasty too. I had nothing to complain about their food here. All very unique and well-executed. Of course, we had to get dessert. We split the Eis Kaffee which was a coffee milkshake and the Profiterole that was covered with hot chocolate sauce and filled with vanilla ice cream. A great way to wrap up the meal. This gem of a Swiss establishment took me right back home to my mom's kitchen. From the escargot that swam in a delicious garlic butter, to the crunchy and piping hot homemade bread to sop up the delicacy, I was satisfied. I'm not a fan of reading the menu and standing in a crowded spot and then ordering and sitting down at our reserved table, the flow just doesn't make sense. It must work, as it is quite a successful restaurant. Once you figure out all the ins and outs of the menus and added any included items, you can sit down and relax, waiting for goodness to be served your way. We ordered the following and not one thing disappointed. Escargot in garlic butter. These are delicious and you don't even need to deal with a decorative shell. Just get right down to business and start enjoying. The Swiss Onion Soup is a must. Pay a little bit extra and allow your taste buds to explore the delicacy. We started with the house salad and the cabbage salad, both tossed with their house dressing (the chef's dad's recipe) and available to buy and bring home and slather on what you like. It is delicious. We are taking this back to California and wowing our friends with this amazing dressing. The Wienerschnitzel was perfectly breaded and fried, served with a traditional slice of lemon and a side of rosti (fried hash browns) or spatzli. Either are excellent as sides. The Bratwurst with brown gravy and onions was my favorite, accompanied by rosti. Had to share this with the group so that all could taste the wonderful dish and long for it later. Oh, but we aren't done. This group had to venture into dessert, which were the profiteroles (cream puffs filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with a homemade chocolate sauce). Come on, this place is Swiss, chocolate has to show up somewhere. 2 Bottles of Oregonian Pinot Noir later and a delicious meal, we can easily say that this was a wonderful dining experience and a memorable one at that. We will be back one day to experience Fondue or Raclette, but for now while it is 96 degrees, this was as light as we could go. Wonderful food but we found it awkward to have reservations and have to order in the entry right when you walk in. You're reading a massive menu and trying to figure out what you'd like to eat as other people are coming in for their reservations and there's not a lot of space. Ordered the Jägerschnitzel. Delicious! I got the hasbrown side hood but a little salty, and my bf got the spatzle side which I think I enjoyed more. They give you a side of bread before your meal comes out with a spicy and regular dressing. I'm not a beer person but I did like the Hefeweizen! They make you order at the front before you sit down which I didn't really like. It was my first time so I wasn't sure what to order so I just got the same as my bf. Though shnitzels & such aren't usually my favorite type of cuisine as it's usually a bit heavier but it's definitely hearty & this place does it well. We've tried several of the schnitzels and a few of their rotating specials, all of which have been pretty good. The entrees are a little pricey but it's a good amount of food, coming w/ either soup or salad & choice of rosti or linguini. The linguini was fine but the rosti is amazing, if you can only choose one choose that. I don't have other rosti experience to compare it to but it tasted like amazing more savory hashbrowns. We also tried the Profiteroles for dessert which was very tasty, like a bon bon stuffed w/ ice cream and a drizzled chocolate shell. Had some family visiting and take them here and share one of best date night spots we ever had. Everything was so spot on to our experience previously and they even remembered us after it had been several months since coming in! If you're looking for a place to flex on your relatives or future in laws in Portland, look no further. We took them boating, wake surfing, and they even spent a day out in the beautiful Columbia gorge doing all sorts of fun stuff only to say that dinner at Swiss Hibiscus was their favorite part of visiting. Sometimes all it takes is good people, great food, and an imported cider to realize the best of times are sometimes happening over a pot of fondue. The trick is knowing where to go, and if you've found yourself thinking about going here, I can confidently say it be worth picking over almost any spot in the area. Tell me a place you can experience 5 star service, food, and ambiance without $$$$ next to the restaurant name... I'll wait. Kind, genuine, and good people can feel hard to find these days, but you can bet you'd find a whole room full of them if you knew the right place to look and Swiss Hibiscus is definitely that place. I can't believe how long it's taken me to eat at Swiss Hibiscus. It's been in my bookmarks for so long and I finally made my way here. And let me tell you, they did NOT disappoint! After visiting Germany (right before the start of the pandemic) I've been craving authentic, delicious schnitzel and spaetzle. There was a restaurant in Beaverton that satisfied my cravings, but they recently closed down permanently. Thank goodness for Swiss Hibiscus! I tried the paprika schnitzel and also took bites from everyone else's dishes in my party and everything was good. The employees were nice and made you feel welcome, but it also felt a little rushed. I love this place! Went here with my daughter after getting her moved in at the University of Portland. Go Pilots! I had a glass of Pinot Noir $13 and my baby girl had a Freshly Squeezed Lemonade $4.50. I had the Emince Zurichoise $24.50 which is a type of schnitzel. This was what I would call Swiss comfort food. Rich in flavor and seasoned perfectly. We had a salad and subbed one of the the sides to a French Onion for an additional $4.25 and glad I did. This FOS was fire. I only wish I could make my FOS as good as this one. My daughter had the Spaghetti Ticinese $19.50. I tried some and it was on point. I'll be back every time I visit my daughter. Swiss Hibiscus has its origins far from Portland, all the way in Hawaii, where Chef Martin Wyss opened Swiss Inn on Oahu. Now this family operation has migrated to Portland, and Swiss Hibiscus continues to serve homestyle Swiss and European dishes with love. After ordering at the counter, we were started off with two airy bread rolls, along with the famous Martin's Swiss Dressing (both the original and the spicy version). Each of the entrees came with an appetizer to start, and we got the cabbage salad (made with Martin's dressing of course); and a thick, warm Swiss barley soup with meat and vegetables. And then came the entrees! The most "Swiss" dish, according to our server, was the Emince Zurichoise, which was thinly sliced pork loin sautéed in a decadent, umami mushroom cream sauce. The Szegedin Goulash was a flavorful, spicy dish of pork shoulder simmered with paprika, onions, and sauerkraut, and finished with a touch of cream. With the entrees, we also got sides of sautéed spätzli (egg noodles) and rösti (a round potato hashbrown), which both paired nicely with the saucy meat dishes. Overall, the food here was just average in terms of quality and flavor, though the service was amazingly friendly and charming, and eating here was getting a taste of old, classic hospitality. read more

We're not in Portland that often anymore, but this restaurant had been on our list for a while and we were finally able to make it happen. Thank goodness! We went on a Friday, which gave us some special weekend entree options. I took one of them, the cassoulet with a cabbage salad on the side. My girlfriend got an old classic, the jaegerschnitzel with roesti and a standard salad. I've had a lot of German food, but I've never had roesti, which I guess is more of a Swiss German thing. I didn't eat much of it since she liked it a lot, but it was flavorful and a nice variety pick over some items we already know well like spaetzle. My cassoulet was not quite like French cassoulets I've had, mostly because it was absolutely loaded with sliced sausage. I'll never complain about too much sausage! What pushes this restaurant over the top is great service. The lady processing orders was super friendly, and then the head cook (who seemed to be her mother) was going from table to table asking for feedback on the meals. read more

The thing to know is this is a VERY small restaurant. After making reservations several weeks in advance, we arrived to find the table reserved for us was so close to the front door the back of the chair was less than 6" from the door frame and with the lack of menu's, people who wouldn't/couldn't use their phone were standing right behind you checking out the menu board as if they're on line at McDonalds. The thing is, I'm fine w/ small restaurants and no paper menu's however had I known the table was at the door, I would have happily declined and reserved for a different day and time as I had looked forward to trying this restaurant. The service was good and the french onion soup some of the best I've had in a long time. The rest of the food was ok but not memorable. Some of that was my own fault, I should have been more adventurous with my choice (chicken wiernerschnitzel). The price for 2 of us with a shared appetizer and dessert, 2 cans of imported beer and 2 entrees was approximately $100 before tip. I would be willing to go again for a casual meal but I would probably wait until the weather was nicer so we could sit outside. read more

My faves are the Alpler/swiss mac and cheese appetizer (I get it vegetarian), their sautéed mushrooms are always lovely and perfectly cooked, the salmon special entire with spatzli (and you can get it Cajun style if you don't want the rich beurre blanc), the bread served with the martins Swiss dressing, their yummy salads, and I also love the vegan lentils and whatever they season them with. We tried a salmon with fresh dill dish, onion soup, salad with their unique homemade dressing (that people come to buy by the bottle), and profiteroles. INCREDIBLE! It is a tiny place with limited seating and a few outdoor tables, and it gets busy, so plan ahead. We had checked the menu beforehand so it went fast. It's a small place and I only saw three employees but they were all very friendly and took good care of us. I ordered the jagerschnitzel and it was heavenly. Paprika schnitzel and beef stroganoff were also ordered. Everything was great! We had the most AMAZING dinner at Swiss Hibiscus!! After we ordered our meals and sat down, we were immediately served hot rolls with Martin's dressing and Martin's hot dressing. The rolls were light and fluffy and both dressings were delicious. We started with cheese fondue and French bread cubes. It was so good and plenty for the 4 of us. Then we had the French onion soup and Potato Leek soup. Each had excellent flavor. The house salat and cabbage salat both had Martin's dressing on them and were very fresh. Our entrees were very filling. The pork Osso buco had an amazing sauce and fell right off the bone. The linguine was very tasty. The roast chicken sandwich was seasoned perfectly. The bratwurst with browned onions, au jus and spatzli was fantastic. The chicken wienerschnitzel was perfectly seasoned, lightly breaded and crispy and the spatzli was wonderful. We did make room for desserts. Their special was profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and melted chocolate. We got 2 orders. We also got a house-made chocolate chip cookie ice cream cookie sandwich and vanilla ice cream with melted chocolate. The service was impeccable. Both servers were very kind and attentive.
