Out in the Mount Tabor neighborhood of Eastern Portland, this is definitely a local, neighborhood restaurant with a fantastic gourmet market and more casual eatery next door. What a find! The food was Pacific Northwest dining using local ingredients and making them shine. We had 3 starters, which allowed us to try different things. The oysters with gelee and the carrot salad (which they split for us) were standouts. My pasta entree was fabulous, with crunchy texture from crispy sun chokes (genius). I made reservations for two for a special date night out. They required a deposit to make a reservation, which isn't my favorite policy. But they also gave the option to pre-purchase cookies or caviar, which is a fun way to surprise the reservation party members. We had bar seats and left the option open to order à la carte or go with their prix fixe. The example menu on the website is several months out of date, so I was not quite sure what we'd get. But I understand the focus of this restaurant to be fresh, in-season food, locally sourced, vegetable-forward, French-inspired. It's a neat location near Mt Tabor. There's not a lot nearby, so it feels like a destination. There is a small parking lot next door, which is convenient. You enter through their market/oyster bar. There's not an immediately clear check-in table. And you're walked through the back to the other side where the Coquine dining room is. It feels a tad underwhelming - perhaps too casual for the finer dining expectation. Additionally, the person who greeted us was a tad surly. Service was friendlier during dinner but a little less hands-on than I'd like. I liked the design of the restaurant. Good lighting, natural decor, red countertop. They are a "zero foodprint" restaurant so the napkins and coasters are washable, serving utensils are wood, etc. It gave a very organic feel. Okay that said! We ordered the following à la carte: -Half dozen oysters (fun toppings - pomegranate gelee) -Bread and butter (normal, would skip next time) -Roasted carrots -Shaved cauliflower salad -Potato gnocchi -Pan seared black cod (our favorite) -Citrus tart (unique) Everything was tasty: well prepared, beautiful to look at, fun sauces and elements to discover. It might have been too many cold dishes at the start. We also got a half dozen cookies to go. I've heard that these are the best cookies in the city. They have nuts, which is an immediate disqualifier for me, but even without that I'm not sure they live up to the hype. Very delicious? Sure. Best in the city? I don't know about that. We celebrated a birthday dinner at Coquine this evening and are already looking forward to returning during another season. We had reservations at the bar but it seems we could very well have made table reservations as the restaurant was not full. We opted for the $135 5-course prix fixe option, which ended up being a 7-course option as we were also served 2 pieces of amuse-bouche crudo bites and treats from their cookie tray after finishing the menu dessert. They very kindly wrapped our treats to-go as we also opted to share an affogato (so I suppose that makes it 8-courses!). Everything was cooked and plated perfectly. Presentation and service were both immaculate. We enjoyed the recommendations for non-alcoholic drinks as well. Over the course of our dinner we couldn't stop commenting on how well each plate incorporated differences in texture, flavor and temperature to create an absolutely titillating experience. Many of the dishes were different from what we might typically steer toward but all were fantastic. There is true creativity and expertise behind each dish which had us excited for the next. We came into our reservation unsure whether we'd do a la carte or try the tasting menu. Ultimately decided to order a la carte since the tasting menu items (largely also available a la carte) didn't interest us as much. (I appreciate they tell you what you're in for! We ordered: - porcini carpaccio -- a nice salad, loved the toasted pecans and cheese in here. It was nice of the kitchen to split it into two portions for us. - bread and butter -- nothing special here honestly - my partner had a roast duck dish -- it was quite tasty, I think maybe the potatoes were the best part - morel gnocchi -- very good but I think the sauce overpowered the flavor of the morels, I could really only taste one in my last bite. I expect gnocchi to have a little more bite in the texture -- these kind of disintegrated in an odd way, maybe I missed something about their composition or something in the menu description. - smoked almond chocolate chip cookie -- honestly I expected to be blown away by this but it was a pretty normal "good" choco chip cookie. On the crumblier side for my taste. Service and ambiance in here are excellent, but personally I don't think the prices (especially if we'd gone with the pre fixe menu) would have been justified based on what we ate. Overall, this was one of the meals I have had in a while. Small quaint place that probably sits 20 max bit nicely appointed . The service was exceptionable, you couldn't have asked for more. Great presentation in each dish and we absolutely loved everything plus we didn't leave hungry. The opposite we were stuffed. The French wines that were chosen were fantastic. I am limited to one glass of wine and wasn't ready to tackle their extensive wine list- they picked/ - what I got was two half pours start with white (oysters) finish with red (duck) both tasty. And the oysters were clearly fresh and freshly opened. I love oysters and these were a delight. Had two salads- and they asked if we wanted to share- yes we did. Served one at a time with serving tools and fresh plates. I had the beet thing - partner had the leek thing. Both beautiful with crisp veg, fruit and other delightful adds. And well prepped so that I didn't need to cut up things that should have been cut in the kitchen. Well dressed- you know that perfect dressing- salad is great and the dressing is so lightly layered that you know that you love what you are eating but it's not dressing forward. Mains- partner had the pork schnitzel, loved the pork but, for me those perfectly prepared wide noodles that I snagged off their plate were the highlight. I had the duck breast, and while I had noodle envy my duck was stunning. There were other nice things on my plate but wowza, perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked - edging toward rare (ish) but with pink (ish) highlights. Yup- nailed it. We went on a Wednesday night and it was pretty full so reservations or you probably wont eat here and boy you should eat here. A treasure for sure. The food was pretty tasty but was shocked at the pricing which was comparable to SF food pricing. We got some bread and butter to start and was ok. The salad we got was really refreshing and dynamic as was the crawfish rice. Really unimpressed by the chicken--not super flavorful or juicy but at least it was a good texture. The fries that came with the chicken were quite soggy from being doused in sauce. Would not recommend. Overall, a decent hidden food spot in a suburban neighborhood with beautiful skyline views but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back if I'm visiting again. read more

We did the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairing. Surprisingly, wine pairing included an ale. The rest of the wines had great back-stories, like one which uses grapes that were almost extinct. The 5 course meal was more like 8, since they added 2 pre-apps and an extra sweet at the end. Food quality was very good. My fav was the cheese dish which was so much more since it was married with apple, celery, cocoa nibs and fresh parsley. Amazing flavors and textures. Also loved the corn soup as the chanterelle, leek ash and puffed rice adding immense flavors and textures. Buckwheat cake was awesome...with the sweet crunchiness, figs, a caramel sauce and creme. Limited 6 week pop up held in the Coquine dining space. Make a reservation through Tock with a $20 per person fee which will be applied toward your check. They also take walk ins! We came in on the first night and I've never been to Coquine so I was delighted to learn there was a small parking lot available! We went ahead and ordered a bottle of the Renzo Castella 2019, a Nebbiolo wine. It was fantastic and light, pairing perfect with our food. Pastas! The Tajarin pasta was my favorite. It features clams, dulse seaweed, carraway, horseradish, and celery. The Paparrdelle was also good, lovely texture and not heavy. We almost didn't order dessert. How sad it would have been if we never met this Strawberry Tart! Perfect finish to the experience. read more

I'm not a wine person, but the rose they recommended was really good. We did the 5 coarse meal, so it took about 2 hours. The ambiance was very cozy and rustic. My most favorite dish would be the ravioli stuffed with ricotta ; it had fava beans and other nuts that paired so well with the pasta. The ice cream had a burst on flavor in every bite. Came here for a birthday dinner celebration and were fortunate to get bar seating to be close to where everything is happening. Their reservations are releases on Tuesdays at 3PM which is an unusual time for me so be sure to set alarms if you want to come here. After visiting I can see why the place gets booked so early and it's because the place itself is super intimate and there are not many tables. They also don't have any outdoor seating so you are limited there. As reservations were tough I ended up getting the seven course tasting menu which will be $136/pp. When you reserve they also have a deposit which they do include in the final total. As you wait though they have their market next door for you to explore or grab something as you wait. I believe it's connected so they can find you as needed. I need to check out the next door spot since they seem to have some specials for happy hour and some items they sell too. The tasting menu items were really creative and delicious! The items do vary based on the four or seven course so don't get confused when others around you may be getting something else. I will say similar to other Yelpers that the experience is on the slower side. I am all for pacing of the menu but there were lulls with the timing and in between they seemed to give us some additional items as they knew they were pacing behind. I would have docked a star but at the end the chef came out to greet us for the birthday celebration with the plate of desserts for us to pick from. We got a couple and realized they weren't on the bill so not sure if that was the standard but it was really nice! Love a woman chef led restaurant so it is worth setting your alarms to do one of their tasting menus. It seems they have some regulars too which is awesome. Since it's pretty exclusive it is on the pricier side so when you do the tasting menus, drinks, etc it does add up. Not a common place to go but worth it for a celebration. read more

This review is solely based on Coquine Market Café. It was a Friday morning, I entered the café with the barista staring at me and did not say a word. I walked towards the ordering counter and looked at the display case of pastries. I did notice quite an amount of fruit flies flying around in the case. Before placing my order, I wasn't greeted or acknowledged at all. Instead the three workers were talking among themselves. I purchased three of the Coquine famous cookies and a Morning Bun. The cookies and the morning bun was phenomenal. Incredibly delicious and would definitely recommend it. They should find a method to abate the fruit flies. Customer service on the other hand was subpar. There was definitely a lack of attentiveness and friendliness. There is a small parking lot next to the restaurant and street parking. read more

An ode to the cookie: I thought I knew you, like Grandma's classics or Christmas wouldn't be complete without. I didn't know all of those might have meaning more sentimental than craveable of their own attributes now. Sometimes we don't know, couldn't possibly fathom what we're missing, and when it arrives so humbly and simply, it's the most delightful surprise. Love at first bite. This is the cookie to ruin all monsters. Smoked almonds bezeled in crispety crunchety brown buttery goodness, chunks of partially-melted chocolate, flakes of crystalline salt tickle my tongue. This is only dessert first. Do better than me and book your dinner reservation in advance, as Chef Katy is filling the tiny dining room to capacity. Our daughter and her husband, who live in Portland, have had Coquine on their "must try" list for some time. We live here only part of the year. They generously gave us a gift certificate to dine at Coquine, which was much appreciated. After eating here, we decided that honesty was the best policy: we told them that, regrettably, we can't highly recommend it. We'd describe it as OK, but not at all memorable. Each of us ordered a different bread, and the server thoughtfully asked if we'd like the breads to arrive at the same time as our appetizers (a soup, and a salad). We said we'd like that. My wife's arrived about 10 minutes after her soup, by which time she had almost finished the latter. The menu was limited to just two entrees; my wife chose one, I had the other. They were extremely bland. Dessert was good. I am well aware that restaurants always have a decent mark-up on wine, but they seem to be at least 300% (3 times) markup (perhaps more on the Blanc de Blancs). Not completely outrageous, but at the top end of the many other restaurants we've visited (including Michelin star locations). And maybe I'd have been more happy to swallow it (pun intended) if the Cab Sauv was great - but it wasn't. read more

We went there for my son's dinner at the market Cafe and it was wonderful, just like a fancy restaurant. I love cocaine. They're amazing, and my kids were able to buy the Coke and sodas out of the case for our dinner. As usual, the food is exceptional. My son tried his second raw oyster! Trying it there with the brands that they have . . . the accoutrement is helpful for sure. But it's the oysters that they have. The flat bottomed one is more, well, flat, but delicious, and they were both amazing and fresh, perfectly shucked. A dining experience is so much more than what the food tastes like. It's for that reason that I have to rate this place so low. If I were to base this rating solely on the taste and quality of the food, it would hands down be a 5 but there's way too many external factors that cannot be ignored. The very first impression of the place, you have to wait for your table in the little overpriced market. It's quite obvious why, they want you to roam around and buy things while you wait. The market is so grossly overpriced that we ended up moving off to the side to lean against the window during our 20 minute wait rather than look around. Additionally, how do you have a coffee shop and a waiting area for guests but no place to sit? This is the least welcoming place we've been to. Once we were seated, the wait staff was nice and polite to us but the ambiance isn't comforting. It was even more hipster than Portland hipster. The place is tiny... no more than 7 tables all smushed extremely close together. Pro-tip!!!! Do not look at the menus posted on here in advance of your meal!!! It seems as though they change their menu every week. This is extremely upsetting to me as my fiancé is a very picky eater and we only decided to eat there because there was one dish she could actually enjoy only to find out that it's no longer on their menu. I have posted a picture of the latest menu as of 12/12/2021. The options are not friendly to everyone's tastes. We ended up with a croque madam and my fiancé just got French fries and a beer. The food here was actually very good and like I said, If I was rating the place based on food would be 5 stars. A few additional details about the meal that pissed me off. The beer that my fiancé wanted, they couldn't serve us because apparently they didn't have one cold at the moment. As in, they didn't restock their beer fridge. I ordered an oat milk mocha which was on their menu for $4.50. I received an oat milk mocha but was charged for a mocha with added oat milk which came out to $5.50. I wasn't about to argue with the waitress over a dollar but why would you not charge me for what I had ordered? If you have an oat milk mocha on your menu, why wouldn't you charge me for that instead of a mocha with oat milk. I even pointed to the listing in the menu and when I ordered it. Lastly, they kicked us out after we were done eating. They weren't shy about letting us know that there is other people waiting to eat. Nothing critical like allergies more so deciding what to order. I'm not sure if they do anything for celebrations but we reserved noting our anniversary and we're congratulated when we got our bill but nothing else was special. Could be because we didn't order a dessert? I would just assume places that ask if you're celebrating something when you make a resy, would actually do something nice for it? My best friend and I enjoyed an absolutely delightful dinner at Coquine this weekend. We did the four course tasting menu, and enjoyed each and every item - each course was more scrumptious than the last. They graciously accommodated my dietary restrictions as well, swapping out the lamb based main with a delicious agnolotti pasta. The gin based cocktail we opted for was one of the best I've ever had, and the desserts were phenomenal. The service was fantastic as well - our servers were attentive, kind, and patiently answered all our questions. Not a hint of pretentious behavior which I've encountered in similar restaurants before. At the end of the meal, the chef personally came to our table to thank us for dining at the restaurant along with a surprise dessert board to choose an additional sweet treat from! Found the perfect parking spot and got a table shortly after placing our orders. I'm a huge fan of the system I usually find at PDX establishments where you place your order up front then find yourself a table after. Luckily for us, we were able to cop a nice corner table. All our food arrived at the same time. My orders: Maple Mimosa Fried egg sandwich Chicory salad When I tell you I ate everything. I couldn't stop eating. That salad was honestly life changing. I can't even with the way they made everything go together like they were meant to be the perfect combination. Who knew fennel could taste THAT good. I unfortunately wasn't able to get photos of my friend's orders. The service was great. There was a little hiccup with a portion of my order. The mimosa hadn't arrived after our food orders were dropped off so I went in to check on it since no one was around for me to flag down. The woman out front was very apologetic and said they were aware it was never brought out. They took it off my bill. I honestly had no problem paying for it, but who was I to say no to a hookup. This restaurant is best enjoyed if you are seeking a culinary experience. The prices are high and the portion sizes are small. It's not value dining. But it can be a fulfilling experience if you are looking for something different. There are two dining areas: the main restaurant, which requires reservations, and the Market Cafe, which is walk-in. We went on a Wednesday evening and easily found seating at the Market Cafe. While the area was very small, there appeared to be ample seating for the number of guests who arrived between 5pm and 6:30pm. Both areas share a common menu. On the evening that we went there, they were serving a four course prix fixe menu, $72. One of the items, steamed clams, was not available on the Market Cafe menu. We liked the flexibility of ordering individual items from the Market Cafe menu, rather than following the set Chef's Choice menu. We love that there are so many great places to eat in Portland.
