First time we ended up here was because of a wait at another restaurant in Montclair and were so happy it led us to Kai Yang! First the decor is so cute, bright colorful florals and tapestries throughout the restaurant. It's a decently sized space with large tables in the middle as well as some small tables. The ambiance is perfect for a dinner w friends or a date night. They are also a BYOB. Service is also top notch. We had some questions the first time and our waitress happily answered all of them as well as made some recommendations for us. Service was quick and attentive. On to the food! For appetizers we've had the calamari, the Tom yum soup, and the vegetable curry puffs. The curry puffs were deff our favorite. Flakey crust, flavorful filling, and tasty dipping sauce! For entree we've had the kra-prow, pad kee mow, and the pineapple chicken. The Pad Kee Mow has been my favorite, but all are delicious. I really love the sweet spicy flavor of the dish!! The pineapple chicken is almost like a sesame chicken/general Tsos type sauce but way better! Portion sizes are pretty decent, if you get apps you'll probably be able to have some left overs! Called last week for delivery but since they we're so busy they were only doing pickup which wasn't a problem. The kids I was babysitting for each had Tom kha soup and one had veggie pad Thai and the other had chicken pad Thai. I had the chicken kee-mow noodles. We all really enjoyed our dishes. The kids said the soup had a very strong cocunut flavor which was a good thing. All of our noodles were seasoned and flavored really well. For the price I think you get good sized portion. I really wanted to like the food here. Especially because our waiter was attentive and sweet. I don't know if it was because it was a Sunday at 8pm and the kitchen staff was just over it, but it was three of us and we all were extremely disappointed. I got the Pad Kee Mao and it tasted like oil and straight up sugar. My friend got the fried pineapple chicken and it was literally chunks of fried breading. Barely any meat. My partner had Pad See Yew and had the same complaint, oily and just tasted like sugar. Also the food was plated sloppily. Very disappointed. Ordered several dishes for an easy dinner. Since we've never eaten here and Thai can be very spicy (too much for me), I went w/a classic Pad Thai. What a mistake! Took 2 bites and 30 mins later my mouth has still not calmed down. I've had Pad Thai many other places before and it's never spicy. Not sure what happened but very disappointed. Love Kai Yang! This new restaurant in downtown Montclair is great! Really nice ambiance and decor. Typical of Montclair, it's BYOB and usually pretty busy on weekend nights but they take reservations! The menu is pretty limited but there's plenty of options for vegetarians and carnivores alike. I love their garlic stir fry with garlic and my partner devours the drunken noodles. The dishes say "vegetable" but they have tofu so definitely ask for it! Their signature item is roasted chicken that comes with various sides. We came with another couple who ordered the whole chicken, and it was MASSIVE. Like enough food to feed an entire family. Great food, but don't recommend for takeout. Ordered at 6:15 tonight, was told 50-60 minutes on their own online ordering site. It's now 7:35 and still waiting. Sent in my brother to check on it at 7:15 and they said 15 minutes, wait for text. Not even a large order. 3 entrees and two salads. A little honesty goes a long way. If you said it would take 90 minutes, when I ordered, I would have chose someplace else. You can't control how busy you are and Covid has caused quite a hiring problem. But there is no excuse for dishonesty in estimating time. Here's a clue from a very successful manager. Under promise and over deliver. Not the other way around. 7:40, still no text. Thanks. Food was finally ready at 7:51. Text arrived at 7:56 for the record. Got home and both salads were undressed (they forgot to include the peanut dressing for one and a dry papaya salad is just terrible) and the rotisserie chicken was cold, because it was probably cooked an hour before everything else. Never again. Shame too, because everyone who works there is wonderful. The funny thing is, we were going to order from Thai Essence in Nutley, but they turned off their takeout ordering because they were too busy (let this be a lesson in how to run a business). We normally do Lamoon's in Clifton, because it's both excellent and never takes more than 20 minutes. Plus there is plenty of parking. Lesson learned. read more

Cute restaurant with vibrant decor! Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We ordered multiple dishes and were satisfied with all of them. We ordered pad thai, curry puffs, basil fried rice, whole fish, rotisserie chicken, small tom yum, and calamari! We were a party of 5 and still had leftovers after it all. I would definitely recommend getting the rotisserie chicken with the beef - the side of beef was juicy with a little bit of crispiness on the outside. This place is a small litte spot right off the main road and easily within walking distance from where we were staying. Between the 6 of us that went here, all of s thought it was great. Four of us ordered the Pad Thai and all of us were very happy with it. It had a good little bit of kick to it, and they gave us some extra spice if you were brave enough to kick it up a few notches. The other two had the pineapple fried rice and pineapple chicken. Both said that it was also very good. We also had the spring rolls, and they were excellent as well. The portions were great and they gave you a good bit to eat. Our server was Erika (sorry if I spelled it wrong), and she was super friendly. The food came out promptly with no issues. I came here for lunch with a friend on a Monday afternoon and it was great. We were seated immediately. The decor and vibe here was really fun and almost was a Thai bistro feel- very colorful and fun. We started off with the vegetable spring rolls and they were delicious. There were 4 of them and they came with a plum sauce. For my main meal I got vegetable pad Thai and it was a perfect. I asked for mild since I can't handle spice and it came perfectly flavored. The only complaint I had was there was a strong fish sauce smell. I'm overly sensitive to the smell of fish sauce so it bothered me a little bit still was delicious! Amazingly delicious Thai food. Has to be the best Thai food in this area. It was our first time, and won't be the last. When you first walk in, your senses are awakened by the smells of great food. The decor is warm and inviting. We started with the chicken and dumplings and a Thai salad. Happy so far. Then are main course we had the PANANG Curry Chicken and the HALF KAI YANG Chicken with Red Curry and both spicy level 7. OMG one of the best meals we've had in quite some time. Most of these at your typical Thai/Asian place are pretty mushy/plain ground chicken. This has great texture and a ton of seasoning. For mains we got the roasted chicken and I got chicken pad see ew. I was asked spice level and I said just a bit of spice would be good. Usually in this area of the north east that means no heat. This had just a great hint of heat but not burn your mouth off. I fly a jet all over Asia for work so this is my disclaimer why I'm not rating this joint 5 stars. That said, it's very authentic. The half chicken comes with two sides and you can get a serving of the skirt steak which is melt in mouth. Only complaint with Kra Tiam chicken was too much chicken. It's tender and has great flavor and is so a shot of the sauce but the veggies were awesome and I wanted more. The papaya salad was good. Nothing amazing. Finally tried this place - tried their rotisserie chicken; what they are famous for, and a Massaman Curry; with a jasmine rice side and steamed vegetables. First and foremost, the design, decor and ambiance is GREAT! Service is very attentive and on point. Our waitress was a little quirky, but that's a good thing - super sweet and attentive. Ok... So the main show... The rotisserie chicken at first bite and at first dip was AMAZING! The spicy vinegar sauce / dip was truly amazing -- amazing flavors from beginning to end. The chicken however was not as hot as we would have wanted it to be and a portion of the half chicken was not cooked right (breast / wing cut), it had blood in the bone and was dripping into the meat. This was remedied with a huge apology and we were given a half chicken to go -- not expected and super nice of them!!! But more on this later... $1 for a cup of rice is great! So many places over charge for rice. Very tasty and fresh; The steamed vegetables were steamed just right and good - no flavors, just nice fresh hearty veggies -- I love that they include bok choy in the mix. Massaman Curry was good -- had chunks of pineapple which I wasn't expecting. Once we added more chili oil to it, Massaman went from good to great! Ok so back to the Rotisserie chicken... Made sure to have the chicken for dinner (meal currently discussing was lunch time) -- later that evening, opened up the chicken, had it with a nice salad and drenched it in that spicy vinegar sauce -- super excited to have the chicken cooked right all the way. WELP... that wasn't the case :( The half chicken is cut into about 4 pieces if I recall correctly. This time two of the 4 pieces were pink and rubbery, and semi bloody by the bone... So it looks like they were undercooked... AGAIN. The tone here is not one of anger, frustration, or negativity. Maybe we went here on an OFF DAY... Maybe we just had rotten luck with the rotisserie chicken that day - who knows. I still want to go again, and make sure the chicken is well cooked. I definitely want to give this place another try and tackle all of their yummy looking items on the menu. I doubt we will get sick, because as soon as we saw pink or blood, we stopped -- so hopefully we ate only the good parts (I hope that's how it works lol - I plead ignorance on this) ... These things happen -- if it's on an auto rotisserie machine, they need to extend the time; if it's manual, then they know what they need to do. I mean Salmonella is no joke, but I also know this place can do better and is better... I mean 192+ reviews and 4 stars says it all. SO, I'm willing to try again and change my rating from 3 to 5.... But I have to be candid and I have to share my first experience in the most honest way. Here's to the next visit, and I'm confident it will be a better one :) read more

Two orders of the Pad Thai with shrimp. They wrap the egg around the pad thai here. They overcook the shrimp and a bit dry other than that dish is nice. My friend had initially ordered the drunken noodle dish and did not like the taste. They were gracious in allowing her to change her order to Pad Thai with extra shrimp. I love thai food so I was happy to see this place in Montclair. The restaurant is not big, casual styled with friendly atmosphere. We ordered a mild tom yum soup with shrimp, which was a little small portion, but delicious. We picked some appetizer, the fried calamari which was so good. Main course i would have liked the drunken noodle but it did not tasted the way I like it, was kinda blend. I asked the server to change my meal for pad thai, he was nice enough to do so. Pad thai was a good choice, made perfectly, so yummy! I think the main course is a bit small portion, but when I asked for extra shrimp, felt like I also got some more of the whole dish.. totally worth the extra money. Very fresh, good portions, perfect spiciness level and very flexible about spiciness (i love spicy, my wife hates spicy). SO excited to have found a yummy Thai place in Montclair. It's hard to find really good Thai in Jersey after having some of the best thai in NYC so I'm always a little skeptical when trying some place new. We went on a weekday afternoon and the place was relatively empty so the service was superb but not sure that's the best time to judge. The decor is refreshing and bright. The food came out fast and the presentation was lovely (LOVED the plates!) The portions weren't HUGE but just good enough. I got the drunken noodles and they made them just the right label of spicy as I asked. Also, their thai iced tea was delicious. Formerly known as Spice11 this new space has a more modern look and new items added to their menu. I love the new decor and the new yummy items. Love their street food items. We order the Chicken special which came with half a chicken stuffed with herbs grill steak, sticky rice, and papaya salad. OMG so good. We also had the pineapple fried rice with chicken which is like a staple here. We also ordered a stream Pad Thai which comes inside an egg omelet . And for dessert my favorite mango sweet rice.
