I have been suffering from a lot of migraines and headaches over the past couple months. In an attempt to figure out what is causing them, I made an optometry appointment at Kaiser. Well, it turns out I have an astigmatism in my left eye and although it isn't necessarily the cause of my headaches, the doctor said that it certainly isn't helping. I immediately took my prescription and walked across the hall to the optical center to pick out my new specs. The staff were warm and incredibly helpful. The woman helping me was patient and gave me her honest opinion about the frames I picked out to try on. I knew she was being genuine because she did not try to convince me to get the most expensive pair. I was in and out quickly and my lenses were ready just a few days later. I felt very well cared for by the woman who helped me place my order and also the man who helped me when I came back to pick them up. All adjustments are free and you can drop in anytime. I really like my new glasses. I especially like being able to see! There is a deal right now that if you buy a pair of frames with prescription lenses, you can get a second pair at 40% off. The deal is good for 30 days after your first purchase. I am seriously considering a pair of prescription sunglasses. While having a slight balance issue, I fell on the carpet today was very firm and fractured my left hip. It turned out that the injury was on the replacement parts of a hip replacement. So it was determined that I would be treated with physical and occupational therapy. Having been in therapy for several weeks, I am returning home to complete the therapy. It will be 6 to 8 weeks before I can put any pressure on my left leg as it would interfere with the healing process. Kaiser has taken this seriously and they provided a wheelchair, Walker, and other items that will help me complete my therapy at home. I'm very grateful for the response to this unfortunate situation. My release date is tomorrow which means I am anticipating with Joy getting back home. read more

Terrible experience. Saw three optometrists before I got a correct prescription but he said use your old glasses and wrote me a prescription for reading glasses. I'm still not happy with old glasses. I'll go elsewhere. read more

I've been here twice. Once last week for an appointment with my Optometrist and today for contact lenses fitting. Their staff is really super sweet and nice. This Kaiser Optical Center is bigger and better than the one in Pleasanton which I used to go to. The only thing was I had an appointment for 3pm today and I had to wait until 3:20 to go in because another patient was going over their time slot. read more

The optometrists are great and deserve 5 stars but the service I received from their eye care specialist, Maureen Dickinson, was terrible. First off she made me wait 15 minutes before seeing me for my appointment because she was flirting about how well she can play golf with a fellow employee and the worst part was that it was right in front of me! Talk about unprofessional. Then I told her I cannot afford the one day contacts but she gave them to me to try anyway. There's no point in trying them if I cannot afford them and I would have benefitted more from trying a different brand of contacts in my price range, but not like she cared. Lastly she special ordered contacts for me and promised to call when they arrived in about a week. She never called and I had to call 2 weeks later to get them. So I do not recommend getting a contact fitting at Kaiser because of Maureen and because it's very expensive ($99-$130). Not worth it. read more

Optometrist was okay though he was late for the appointment and had no apology. The people in the optometry section were not okay - there were four people working and only one of them had any turnover while I waited for more than 30 minutes. There was a lot of walking back and forth by the people they were helping which makes one think they should have chosen their frames before sitting down. Plus when there was turnover finally, the employee took his/her sweet time putting back frames and walking to the back instead of helping those of us who were waiting. Additionally, the employee obviously had been told to sell upgrades to the basic lenses - special coatings, etc. and would not listen when I said no thanks. NO thanks. NO THaNKS. Felt like I was in a used car lot. read more

I'd like to say dr Hong is great! She answered all my questions and helped me out with understanding my eye care needs. She gets 5 stars. The eye care specialist on the other hand are horrible. I wish I remembered the mans name that helped me. He was old and skinny had glasses with another lease connected to it that he could flip over whenever he wanted. Horrible customer service by him. Dr Hong stated that I needed a new prescription because my eyes had gotten worse. So when I went into the see the eye care specialist to get a new lease put in my glasses the man told me that this was not something that I needed to be doing, his current glasses that are 4 years old and the ones that he just got are a different prescription. I'm sorry sir dr Hong stated I needed new glasses, who are you to go against what and eye dr is recommending not only that but doing so in such a rude way. He had such a horrible attitude that I told him to give me my prescription back and he was rude and shouldn't be in customer service and I would take my business elsewhere. He proceeded to argue with me and tell me that he's not rude I am as I walked out. I had a great experience the first time I was here 6 months ago and I will never return because of his horrible customer service read more

As much as I wanted to like the Martinez Optical Center it did not turn out well. Not only did they charge for a contact fitting with a woman who was unhelpful and rude but she forgot to give me a left contact and it ended up taking multiple calls and weeks of waiting to actually get my trial contacts. I give five stars for my doctor, Ekaterina Malinovsky. She is a great listener, is very open to suggestions, quickly answers my emails and is very professional! I have absolutely loved working with her, and I am a nurse! The lab people are great, as are Xray. My only complaint is pharmacy; I know it gets vey busy, and probably difficult for the Pharmacy Techs and most are quite good. I just do not appreciate having to go through the pharmacy line twice if my medicine is not ready the first time, and this only occurs with one or two of them. A Tech informs you that you wait until your name comes up on the screen, and they tell you either to go straight to the or wait until your name is called The last time I picked up meds, after I had waited in line, then15 minutes following my name on the screen, I advanced toward the counter. A Tech asked me to wait for my name or get back in line, like he was Hitler. I got back in the long line and nearly missed my flight that afternoon! Well bully for him, he was able to order me around-knows nothing about customer service read more

This was my first and last time using Kaiser optometrists. I needed to replace my 15 year old glasses as the coatings were peeling, and the frames of my sunglasses were badly worn. My first visit was with Dr. Hong. I was surprised how fast it went, certainly less than 10 minutes, and no air puff test for glaucoma or eye drops to dilate the pupils. Since glaucoma and macular degeneration run in my family and I have some problems with floaters, I was hoping for a more comprehensive evaluation. I had my glasses made elsewhere, and when they arrived, the left lens was perfect but the right wasn't even close, very blurry! I am very mildly nearsighted, also with mild astigmatism, and the doctor hadn't marked the right eye for astigmatism! Unbelievable. Since I was entitled to one do-over on my lenses, I went back first to have the prescription fixed, this time seeing Dr. Aboutalebi. When checked, there was no problem with how the lenses had been made; the prescription was definitely off, not by a lot, but certainly enough to be more than annoying. My new prescription indeed adjusted the right lens for both the nearsightedness and astigmatism. This exam took perhaps 5 minutes. I mention the time, because my last two eye exams (around 1988 and 2000) took MUCH longer (perhaps 15-20 minutes by my recollection) and I was given more choices and time to refine my prescription (I still remember the red dot test for accuracy, which Kaiser also did not do). Why's that significant? Here's the kicker. While waiting for the new glasses to be made, I found a clean, barely used old pair in a drawer from that early 1988 checkup, and they work perfectly. Even the second "fixed" prescription from Kaiser isn't as good, as the right lens, though better than the first, is still not as crisp as the left. What got me was the doctor saying I had to let my eyes adjust to the new lens. Excuse me, but I thought the purpose of the exam was to get the lens to adjust for the eye! How is it that 18 year old glasses are more exact than brand new ones? I mostly use my glasses for driving, and it's easy to read distant road signs with my left eye, but not the right, and since I'm right eye dominant, it's a bit disconcerting. It isn't like Kaiser was incredibly busy for either visit. The first time, there was one person waiting after me. The second time, I waited for the doctor past my appointment time while she had a conversation with a co-worker in the back, and there was no one waiting when I left. I'll blame the system, which puts primacy on getting patients in and out quickly and penalizes doctors for taking too much time. Meanwhile I have to decide if I can live with the glasses as they are, or shell out more money to get them remade after a more thorough and comprehensive exam elsewhere. read more
