This "prime rib" was complete fat. Very hard to cut and had little flavor. I sent it back. Then found out that was the last piece of prime rib " Im guessing that's why it was complete fat". We listened to the table next to us order wow the waitress was very rude horrible customer service skills. Do not order from the tall heavyset waitress. Couldn't see her name. The family she had was commenting to each other how rude she was . Got my new order which was ribs and it was like they were cooked 3 hours ago and they were very cold and baked potato was burnt they offered free bread pudding for inconvenience for the prime rib. Best part of my meal was my rays salad ! Loved it but i feel like I paid 84 dollars for 2 salads. Would like my money back. NOT WORTH IT! . read more

I was in town visiting some family, and apparently this is The place to go to for a nice dinner. We drove to downtown New Ulm, checked out the evening cuckoo clock show, and got seated right at reservation time. They served 1919 Root Beer, which was all I needed, so while I downed about three mugs of that, I had my meal. The main thing I got was the.. Kaiserhoff German Sampler (Kaiserhoff Ribs, Landjaeger, Bratwurst, red cabbage, German potato salad, sauerkraut, and bread). Dear lord, these ribs. Fall off the bone, and surrounded in some sort of sauce-based crust that had some amazing crunch around those moist, succulent ribs. The two sausages were also good. If you like sausages, you'll get a kick out of these two very different flavors and textures. Good stuff. And the potato salad, very different from anything I've ever had before, ooey and gooey, no texture really, but acidic, which was nice compared to the meaty ribs and sausages. I also got to try the Wiener Schnitzel (Breaded veal complimented with red cabbage) (Served with spaetzles with gravy and coleslaw). Oooh I loved this. Breaded perfectly, very crunchy. Cooked perfectly, not dry at all. And spaetzle is like my favorite side dish. Slathered with grazy, like schnitzel and dumplings. What a meal. Overall, this was a lovely meal in a lovely little town. I do not get the bad reviews of Kaiserhoff, we really liked our dinner here! This restaurant is totally old school; we were in town from the Cities for Shell's Oktoberfest, and we all wanted German food for dinner afterwards. Despite being super busy, we got in pretty quickly. Service was a tad bit slow, but that was to be expected because of how packed the restaurant was. The food was pretty dang good! I got a jaeger schnitzel and my wife got the ribs. The schnitzel was tasty (but could have used a bit more sauce) and the ribs were TO DIE FOR amazing, I would definitely get them next time. The German soup was also really good. Our daughter had a side of spaetzle, which she really liked. Kaiserhoff is definitely family-friendly and accomodating of children, and the inside is very old-world cozy. We love it here and will definitely be back. There is one negative thing I do have to report: the bathroom was absolutely disgusting. It looked like it had not been cleaned in weeks and needed almost a complete remodel to bring it up to standard. I was shocked by this as the rest of the restaurant is so pleasant. We decided to take a quick day trip and head to New Ulm for some German food and beer. This place was recommended as a must stop for their German fare so we decided to stop in while on the main drag. This place definately gives off 1970's supper club vibes. Not much has changed since then but that is not always a bad thing. It all depends if the food is good. We decided to try a few different things and ordered the German Sampler and Schnitzel al a Holstein. I have to tell you, this was some great Midwest German food. The suggestions were spot on. The red cabbage and sauerkraut were both great and they went well with all of the meats and sausages that we ordered. Their ribs, which they are famous for, were tender and fall off the bone moist. The BBQ sauce that was served with them was something entirely different and unique which amplified the experience. Even the addition of breadsticks and salad with homemade dressing brought home the supper club feel. We left stuffed and satisfied. My only gripe about this place was that the staff had a real "chicken with its head cut off" vibe. Lots of running around aimessly. Our table was forgotten after we were seated and we had to flag a waitress down to get service after waiting over 15 minutes. Easy mistake and the food was good so it was forgivable. We were drawn in by the exterior & the promise of the best German food in [a very German] town. This place hasn't been updated any time recently, & that's not a complaint, it's a compliment. The barkeep greeted us on entry & we liked her right off the bat. There was also an energetic server buzzing around, cheerfully & frequently addressing her tables, greeting regulars & introducing herself to visitors. Unfortunately, we didn't have her. Our server was working the main dining room & her only table in the bar area was ours. She wasn't neglectful & went through the motions. Still, I found myself envious of the other guests, which were being given tips [ie: that syrup carafe is actually our famous rib sauce, which goes great on our also famous kraut balls!], while we got "everything still ok?" Ok sums it up well. While they had fabulously tangy red cabbage & a lovely kraut soup, the rest was just ok. The kraut was mild & I'm gonna expect at least 3 varieties of mustard to choose from for sausage. The price wasn't horrible but is wasn't a great deal either. I've had better for less. How does this dump stay in business? The German potato salad was a mushy bowl of syrupy potatoes (?). It tasted more like applesauce. I make better without trying. The red cabbage was sweet and vinegary. I thought maybe they tried to make kraut, but it smelled so bad, it made me nauseated to have it on the table. The schnitzel was too tough to cut, but edible (barely) with some salt. The mushroom gravy looked good, but it had no flavor. Honestly, the hot breadstick was the only thing worth eating! Others had the ribs. The portion was tiny for the price, but they were tender. The sauce looks odd. I think it the Carolina mustard type and Kaiserhoff is very proud of it. We had an ok meal here. It could've been better, it could've been worse. I wasn't feeling German food so I had the fried shrimp meal with salad and a baked potato. The ambience was cool--besides the few random Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe posters that were definitely out of place, the German atmosphere and family-owned signs and photos gave it a homey feel. We loved that each booth had a free jukebox at it with awesome classic hits! That was definitely the best part. We shared the Kaiserhoff German Sampler which ended up being enough for us four. We added a Ray's Salad, which was underwhelming and too soaked in Western dressing for me. The ribs on the platter were smothered in a secret Thousand Island/hot sauce combo sauce that was surprisingly good! The sausages were delicious, and the potato salad and sauerkraut were authentic and well done. German food isn't my favorite but this was a good representation of it! What a fun find! Three of us tried the German dishes and our less adventurous friend had a cod basket. Schnitzel was crispy and good. We also liked the kraut and spaetzle. My grandma passed away years ago while my grandpa passed away recently. after the funeral they accommodated our large family of over 50 people with an amazing dining experience. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. We planned a day trip on our Harleys specifically for this place and the sauerkraut balls. We were so excited! If I could go back and tell my little group... turn around; go to White Castle instead. The meal started off with a small brown something in friend 2's soda. We think it may have been a bug. He sent it back and stuck with water. We should have ran right then and there. The sauerkraut balls. *insert gagging here* The outside looked delicious. The inside? Mush. Nothing inside this ball of mucous resembled sauerkraut. It had a distinct taste of actual vomit to me (my 2 companions disagreed, but they hated them too). Me and friend 1 played it safe and order fried mushrooms and fried cauliflower after the nasty vomit balls and bug soda. Friend 2 had the German sampler. How can you screw up fried mushrooms/cauliflower; typical bar food, right? Well, this place can. The cauliflower was edible, but the mushrooms were over-fried on the outside and really wet and undercooked on the inside. Friend and I each tried one and couldn't choke down another. Friend 2 took 1-2 bites of everything on the German Sampler and that was enough for him. Friend 1 and I tried a small fork tip of each of his items and that was more than enough. The 2 sausages were probably from the Walmart clearance freezer. Dry and tasted like cardboard. The ribs may have been decent when they first cooked them 3 days ago. Their "special" BBQ sauce I suspect is just ketchup and mayo mixed together. The red cabbage is nothing but vinegar and you really shouldn't have more than 1 tiny bite. The potato salad seems to have had an entire 5 pound bag of sugar mixed in it. The mushy warm "sauerkraut" under the Walmart meat didn't look anything akin to kraut. I refused to even taste it after the reactions from my friends small bites. We all ate some hard candy friend 1 carries on her bike to get the taste out of our mouths immediately after leaving. Bonus: There were actual German tourists at the table next to us. They left the same time we did with lots of food left on their plates. Outside, I asked what they thought of the food. They all chuckled and looked at each other and politely said, "That's not German food. It was not good." The waitress was friendly and nice. I did give her a decent tip. Not anymore, VERY SAD. my egg on my schnitzel was raw(almost liquid) when came out, ask for it be cooked more, and it came out hard, over done the second time. OLD SCHOOL. We definitely enjoyed ourselves at the Kaiserhoff. That said, for better or worse, it is obviously a place that operates on tradition, not innovation. I was hoping for a more convivial atmosphere, but it was very slow and quiet on a Sunday evening. Thankfully there was a large table (including baby) directly behind ours to give the room some life. Otherwise there were only two other twosomes in the large dining room. Our waitress Katie was wonderfully sunny and helpful. With such a large menu, I struggled to find the right thing; I bet that if I ate here ten times in a row I would find some stuff really good and some not so good, so I was trying to find the "bingo" among it all. I ended up choosing a sampler. The sausages--landjaeger and bratwurst--were very good, but the sides were disappointing. The red cabbage was good, the sauerkraut fine, and the german potato salad very bland. I also ordered a fried cauliflower appetizer and applied the "famous" house barbecue sauce. We went to New Ulm after seeing the ads in German Life. What a disappointment. Go to Stillwater instead, better German food too. First of all, we learned a valuable lesson: If you see no German beer on the menu, and then as a fallback, ask for German wine and they have none, run, do not walk to nearest exit. As their ad says, they have Wiener Schnitzel, but they do not, said they could not get veal, so why on the menu? Got Schwerin Schnitzel instead. Not good, heavily breaded and the pork was not tender. The Red Cabbage tasted of nothing but vinegar, and the soup had five times the salt. Spätzle was tasteless to boot. No one thought their food was good either. The dessert had to be seen to believe. We ordered Apfelstrudel, and what we got was a Circle K Danish with a caramel sauce drizzled over it, we think. It was a square, not a slice, apple in the middle, lots of white frosting, no raisins nothing like a true strudel. The place was appointed nicely and perhaps a previous owner was really a German, but these folks must never had a real German meal. Upon entering, I got more of a sad feeling than a welcoming feeling. Maybe because we were there for lunch on a rainy Tuesday and Kaiserhoff is busier for dinner service. But for the size of it, the place was empty. Our waitress was friendly and helpful with questions about the menu. We both ordered the German Sampler (Kaiserhoff ribs, landjaeger, bratwurst, red cabbage, German Potato salad, sauerkraut and bread) and added a Ray's Salad. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs as we both struggled to clean our plates. It ended in a draw with neither of us able to finish our full meal. So yes, I would definitely recommend the German sampler as a meal for two. The food was good, portions were huge. Their ribs are advertised as a special cut with their own BBQ sauce. We determined the BBQ sauce was basically a thousand island dressing. The Ray's Salad is nothing special, iceberg lettuce with croutons, bacon and what I'm pretty sure was that same BBQ sauce. I finished my brat and sausage and I enjoyed the sides, too, but just couldn't finish them. Food was satisfying but the wait seemed long considering there were not many patrons. Average German options with a decor to match. I'm not entirely sure I'd return but if I did I would order something different from the German specialties section of the menu.
