I have reviewed Kaitz Construction and its owner Rick Kaitz before, but I have to share an update on the recent renovations he led to completely transform a defunct bathroom into a new office space and guest bathroom. When we purchased the house, we knew that the downstairs bathroom needed to be renovated. The previous owners had "upgraded" a 1960s model bathroom and space into a shabby attempt at luxury, but with shoddy materials and poor workmanship. Our inspector alerted us to this, which was obvious by the cracks in the countertops and the shower we could no longer use because of leaks in the wall. Due to other calamities that befell, we had to wait 4 years before we could undertake the kind of reno we wanted. I called Rick back to help us again (see previous posts) and he helped us create the space of our dreams. Side note: During a visit I asked him about how to fix our laundry issues and after he took a closer look, he advised us to prioritize the more urgent issue, but less costly reno of a hazardous laundry setup before we dove into the bathroom. This is very common of Rick. He understood that for me, my family's safety is more important. He coordinated all the electrical and plumbing with his amazing partners and subs, including Alligator Plumbing. And he made sure to tie in the electrical work so that it would benefit us for the upcoming bathroom work. Within days, he had my laundry situation relocated, plumbed, wired, vented, and back up and running. For the bathroom, I initially had wanted to work with a family friend designer, but to save on cost, I moved forward relying on Rick and the excellent tile and flooring partners he sent us to, Nara Tile in Dublin. Something that you have to know about working with Rick is that he maintains the BEST partnerships and has amazing subcontractors. You can sense the mutual respect and they work so well together. I keep pinching myself at how blessed I am to have been able to work with his artisan tile workers; the best and most in demand plumbing shop in town, Alligator; and his electrical guys who are absolute gems. Through it all, Rick made sure to keep me updated down to the extra $200 dollar that the project required to make sure that concrete was poured properly to patch up the previous owners work. He never overinflated promises, but he worked his butt off to keep them. And the result is the loveliest bathroom and office space that I could ever have dreamed of. My husband will only shower down there in the guest bathroom now bc it is legitimately the best bathroom in our house. I can't wait to fix up our master bedroom and bath. read more

I'm embarrassed by how overdue this review is. Rick Kaitz at Kaitz construction is the best contractor you will ever work with and there is no reason for you to talk to anyone else. He is so great, he is occasionally booked 6 months in advance, so if you think you might be starting, call him now. Rick did the below construction himself for us (with a couple helpers): Opened up an interior wall between our kitchen and dining room. Replaced rotted exterior wall Replaced a window with a wall (at our request). Installed new support beams for front porch overhang And organized the below for us as Project Manager/General Contractor: Exterior Stucco Complete Removal and Replacement of whole house Replaced all Windows Replaced Exterior Doors and 1 interior Door Full Roof Replacement with addition of Attic Fan and Vents Re-Finished Drywall in two rooms and patched areas as needed due to changes in window sizes He even coordinated/worked with a concrete contractor I had a previous relationship with who I had pouring us a new driveway, walkway, and resurfacing our porch. Painting and woodwork repair on exterior of the house. Suffice it to say, we had a LOT going on all at once and it would not have been possible without Rick's help. We hired Rick as a dual Project Manager and a Contractor. There were some jobs he completed himself and then areas he subbed out to others were as if he had done them. Rick handled all of the pricing negotiations and scheduling and all I had to do was pick out the materials I wanted and Rick took care of everything else. It was so nice to just have one responsive contact who knew everything about what I wanted. There were a lot of different people doing a lot of different things at our house and I never had any issues with any of them. Periodically, Rick would call or text me with updates or questions but I had so much faith I wasn't even home for most of it. We had our dog and cat at the house during the construction and the days the crew needed access to the inside of the house, Rick gave me advanced notice and had the crew always leave me at least one "safe room" for me to be in with the animals. During the project, I also never had to clean up any dust or trash around the jobsite. There was plenty mess made, but at the end of each day, Rick had the crew do around and do a full clean-up. There were days I'd come from work and find Rick himself sweeping and picking up trash. I didn't hire him to clean my house and was not expecting it, but that is just one example of how he showed how much he respected our home. As far as decisions on the house are concerned, my husband and I agreed a long time ago that I'm in charge (which I know is just because it means he doesn't have to deal with any of it, lol.). Over the years, I have had difficulty with different contractors and service professionals who I've had to repeatedly tell that I was in charge and to stop asking for my husband when I answered the door or phone. This was never an issue with Rick. From day 1, he never talked down to me or treated me any different than if/when he was talking to my husband. All of the subs and crew he brought to our house followed his lead which made me feel secure and empowered during the whole process. I also think it is an important quality to note that Rick is not a "yes" man. He is experienced and communicates his knowledge in a welcome and helpful way. He made sure I was positive about everything I wanted before moving forward to save me from regrets down the line. For an example, when we were discussing the above described window to wall replacement, before moving forward, he had me completely block out the window with cardboard for a couple of weeks before making the final change in order for me to see what the difference would be with how much light came in during the day and how the room looked in general without there being a window. I could keep going on and on about Rick's greatness, but really writing more would just be taking time away when instead of reading about my experiences, you should be calling him and enjoying the pleasure of working with him yourself. read more

It turned out great, and working with Rick was a pleasure. We really appreciated that he would keep us apprised of what was going to happen each day. My husband and I were thinking of putting an offer on a house that was in disrepair. To get a sense of what we might be getting ourselves into, we wanted to have a contractor take a look at the house and give us a rough estimate of the financial costs and the time it would take. I left voicemail messages with many contractors but only Rick Kaitz, who was recommended by a colleague, followed up. Despite it being the holiday season, Rick was willing to come out on a Sunday morning to walk through the house with us and give us his expert opinion. Right away, he picked up on a variety of details that we'd missed, such as a leaky roof, asbestos in the floor, a retaining wall that was coming apart, etc. He gave us suggestions of how we could approach the upgrades and repairs in phases to allow us to move into the house as early as possible. Rick is our go-to contractor for general contracting, especially when it comes to things that are detail-oriented. What I like about Rick is his honesty. He tells it as it is and has even talked me out of getting some stuff done because it would make things worse rather than better. Rick also goes above and beyond what is asked of him. Recently we had him caulk some of our baseboards where caulking was missing. Instead of only caulking those baseboards, Rick caulked all of the baseboards in that room because he felt that the caulking on the other baseboards were too thin (those baseboard were done by another contractor). Rick is probably the most detail-oriented contractor I've worked with. After another contractor re-did our entire kitchen, they hadn't taken care of some of the detailing work such as caulking/painting the crown molding and making sure the doors open/close smoothly. Rick painstakingly took off all the cabinet doors to caulk and paint the crown molding and also fixed an area in the kitchen where the doors could not open/close freely. Alright, so my husband and I recently bought a house built in 1952 so it is very charming and quaint (outdated and small). I was prepared to live with this for many years and save my pennies and nickels and pray for a lottery win. Then many years from now update areas of our new home. My husband and I embarked on our first kitchen remodel project this year. We had heard stories from friends and family who had done their own remodel projects and were warned to expect whatever project timeline estimate the Contractor gives you, double it! A remodel will always take longer than what the Contractor tells you. We recently used Rick to completely replace the shower originally installed in our home with a custom designed "waterfall style", jet-filled creation. We decked the shower out with the best Hans Grohe features and since we plan on using this ourselves we wanted every option available. We engaged Rick to manage the whole thing and his preparation was great, taking time before quoting the job to really understand what we needed, check that our (Internet) research was on the spot and helping to educate us about what was practical and what would drive the cost higher with little return. As we bought components from multiple suppliers online (come on Bay Area plumbing supply stores - get with the program and DROP your crazy prices!) it was important that we had someone in the trade who could help keep our wild plans realistic! The only delay on the work was before everything began when Rick's long time tiler, who had originally quoted the job, was unable to take on the project due to surgery, leaving Rick to find a quality replacement tradesman to do the work. As our bathroom already had great tiling and we were looking to match the craftsmanship he took the time to carefully screen the candidates and we had a first hand look at how particular he is when bringing on sub-contractors. Once the work began, Rick was great at keeping us up to date and his enthusiasm throughout was obvious. I was travelling for work and he kept me up to date with progress including photographs and we were included in all the decisions along the way. All the people that he brought in kept the work site clean, were courteous to the whole family including inquisitive kids wanting to watch them and each day left the bathroom in a usable state. The extra changes that Rick recommended such as the glass in the shower door were right on, and he was very transparent when it came to what was driving the price. We just had our main bathroom remodeled by Rick Kaitz, and were do I start..Well, I have to say he is one of the most courteous guys working in the construction business whom I have come into contact. As many may know seeking out a general contractor for such an expensive and invasive process(people in and out of your home for weeks) is no easy task. As the construction industry seems to be really booming right now, a bit of a wait is the game and he was well worth it. After discussing the renovation with 5 different contractors Rick topped the list for cost efficiency, excellent referrals and time frame for getting us to the point of having a functioning shower (we only have one bathroom with shower). Prior to our first real sit-down meeting, Rick was able to give me a cost estimate with breakdown. We then meet and talked about how everything would go from the pulling of permits(which was my decision to do myself /to save costs)to the daily details, ei, demo, rough plumbing, rough electrical, framing, insulation, sheet rock, etc. Rick gave me a time line and it went so smooth and without stress, that it was a bit surprising. You kind of expect that something is going to go wrong, but this guy is so on the ball with coordinating his sub-contractors that everything went totally as planned. He checked in either in person or by phone almost every single day. He is very detail oriented and you can tell that he sincerely wants everything to really to be as perfect as possible. He knew that we had a budget and gave us suggestions were we could save costs by doing the work ourselves (painting the laundry room, as the ceiling had to be replaced)He even took the time to review a list of supplies I would need for painting, answered all my questions and showed me how to properly use spackle and chaulk. Every step of the way he was there to answer our questions, and make sure that we were satisfied with how everything was going. He was extremely tidy and made sure that all touch ups were done at the end point after the cabinets were placed.
