This review is for the children's Kung Fu Class. My daughter is a student and loves everything…read moreabout the Hung Fa Kwoon. Sifu Mark and Sihing Mike do a fantastic job teaching the kids the correct form and the importance of each movement. They're both very humble, patient, and always take the time to work with each student. Unlike some facilities that teach martial arts, this is not a "one size fits all" method of instruction where the teacher is up front shouting out commands and everyone is doing the same drill. Sifu Mark and Sihing Mike are great at keeping the kids engaged in their training--training which is focused on the individual and each student is assessed on their own abilities. I think it's important to mention a few things if you're thinking of enrolling your child in this Kwoon, so please keep in mind that Kung Fu is all about the merits of hard work. First, the warm-up, it's a 15-20 minute HIIT workout starting with laps around the room followed by a combination of exercises involving variations of push-ups, crunches, power jumps, squats, burpees, and different types of lunges to increase muscle strength for the legs, core, arms and shoulders. It's go time with one evolution after another. There's about a 30 second water break worked into the PT session, but the pace is designed to keep the heart rate up for stamina. If your kid needs to stop for a breather it's no big deal, there's no criticism, dishonor, or penalty, this is about building up their fitness level and these workouts are intended to push the envelope physically and mentally. This concludes with static and dynamic stretching for the cool down before your child's martial arts training really starts. Your kid will not be learning Wing Chun right away, every child must learn the basics of Chinese martial arts which involves training methods that are rooted very deeply in their tradition and inspired by Chinese philosophy. In this case, it's the mimicry of the Five Animals--physical training aimed at developing grace, power, speed, flexibility, and precision, all paired with balance. The basics are made up of rudimentary techniques, conditioning exercises, stances, breathing, simple movements, and proper body mechanics that are performed repeatedly. No matter what skill level your child is at, the basics are constantly revisited since they are the foundation for strong and flexible muscles that will enable your kid to progress to the more advanced stages. To succeed in this discipline, your kid will need patience, energy, practice, and time to learn every stance, block, strike, and kick. There are no shortcuts, but I believe you'll see the difference in your child's fitness level and self-confidence as time passes and they acquire new skills. Second, Hung Fa isn't limited to the biomechanics of a self-defense system, Sifu Mark and Sihing Mike actually spend time with the kids sharing the meaning of Kung Fu and its origin, and on the philosophical level, the importance of respect, integrity, and hard work. They show the kids the connection to daily life...that balance isn't just about staying on your feet, it's also about having balance and harmony in all aspects of one's life--family, school, friends, work, and play. Hard work isn't contained within the walls of the Kwoon, it's needed for everything if one wants to achieve. That's some pretty heavy dope for the kids, but they get it. Now with all this PT, Kung Fu training, and exposure to cultural diversity happening, Sifu and Sihing somehow manage to make it fun for the kids by keeping up the energy level when they demonstrate their own skills and explain how combinations can be put together with the moves the kids have been taught. This Kwoon is very supportive and encourages children to always be attentive, careful, and not be afraid to try something new. It's trendy for parents to enroll their kids in karate, it's almost a cliché. However, how often do those kids go the distance in such programs before they lose interest and become one of those teens who've forgotten everything they've learned as they hang out at the food court and tell their friends in passing "Yeah I took karate lessons once when I was a kid too..." Your child deserves better than that, if they've expressed an interest in martial arts why not give them a gift that will serve them well in life? I highly recommend the Hung Fa Yi Kwoon and hold the highest respect for Sifu Mark and Sihing Mike for passing on their experience to my daughter..."Yat! Yee! Saam!" "Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all." -Sam Ewing

Rennaissance Wing Chun - Testimonial…read more Written after 30 months of training. If you are looking for a place to learn how to fight, this is it. Your body will get in shape as a by product of training and diet. The instructor is a Master of his time with a broad knowledge of fighting philosophy who will help you understand the elements of fighting and how they are applied in combat situations. This is chiefly a wing chun school but you will also have access to other martial arts such as Sanda, Catch wrestling and Savatte. The purpose is to expose the student to fighting at different ranges to limit the vulnerability of circumstance. There will be bruises, especially on the fore-arms. Part of the "no-pain, no gain" mentality. After a while they feel like badges of accomplishment. Eventually your body will harden and they will become less frequent. Im starting to miss them already. I have met new friends although it feels more like a family. I have lost body fat and gained muscle in areas I have not been utilizing transforming into a more tone and proportionate body. I have learned techniques in self-defense all while maintaining interest and having fun. My pains from past surgeries are a rare occurrence and feel in my physical prime. Most people try the $25 week to check it out, the newbies who are serious in enhancing their combat knowledge tend to be the ones who stick around. I find the potential benefit far out-weighs the costs. I find myself very fortunate to have encountered this opportunity in my life and fore-see years enveloped in this system before losing interest, as there is so much to learn. I have finished the wing chun curriculum and still find myself learning new things while improving my fighting ability. Thanks to Grandmaster Ip-Man for adding to the establishment of this art and teaching it to others where it eventually found its way into our lives. May he be at peace and may we represent him in a good manner.

Since AZ Combat Sports offers new students a free first class, I joined Ms. Official Badass Grace O. in an evening hour-long Muay Thai session of punching, pivoting and sweating. After filling out the necessary paperwork (A form basically saying don't sue them If you get hurt practicing, etc.), I was given a tour, and introduced to many cool and experienced students in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-jitsu), MMA, and Muay Thai. The class started with some cardio (Jump rope), then moved on to stretching and some muscle strength exercises. Since everyone else was not a newbie, the assistant instructor then gave me an individualized intro class where I learned the basics of punching while the others practiced kicks and punches with a partner. Since I used to take kenpo, a lot of the muscle memory I've retained doesn't fit into the style of Muay Thai fighting, at least where striking and hand movements are concerned. The instructor was patient though as he guided me through the different moves. I have to say I was a little disappointed I didn't get to kick anything today but I understand that you gotta start with the basics if you want to build a solid foundation of skills. Compared to a krav maga class I took a few years ago, I liked the atmosphere here better, and I appreciated the personal instruction. While the krav maga class has you jump right into action, practicing attack scenarios, the Muay Thai class focused more on form so that the punches and kicks you deliver have the most bang for your buck. I'm still debating whether to get back into a more traditional martial arts or more of a combat sport like Muay Thai, but if I do decide to go into Muay Thai this is the place to be!

I had some concerns mand explained I might not be able physically do the class. Im not 20 years old anymore and am short one wash board stomach lol. I thought I might be to old ( in my mind Im 30 :), but my body is 54. Keith said to come in and give it a shot its free to try it. He also said to come and do what you can there is no failure to try. My wife and I took an introductory class on a Friday evening. Everyone was very nice from the minute we arrived, with no pressure and no "Im better than you attitude" . Everyone of all ages was smiling, friendly and encouraging. The facility is second to none with all the cool pads and mats and work out punching bags. It's a large space with good lighting and is well taken care of, bathrooms were clean as well. It is obvious from the moment you enter the building that they take pride in thier space as much as thier philosophy and practices. We got right in to to our 50 minute class starting with the owner himself, Keith (a black belt), showing us a basic fight stance. Then a female instuctor named Amy took over with a basic warmup consisting of jumping jacks, jogging around the padded mat and stretches etc. She then taught us to punch correctly and we learned how to break out of a choke hold. I was amazed at what you can learn in 1 hour with a quality well spoken instructors that actually cares if you "get it" or not. My wife also liked the class. After the class ended we had a post meeting with Keith where he gave us the run down on options for memberships and pricing. It all seemed fair for what you get and access to so much skilled training. I've owned my own small business for 27 years so I can appreciate fair, but still needing to make a profit pricing to keep a good business going strong. If its to cheap the business won't last and if its to expensive no one will pay the high price. After a couple days I called Keith and signed up on a limited basis at first because I honestly didn't know if this was something I could commit to with my work schedule and responsibilities for running my own business. My wife liked the class and hoped to do more, but has some serious neck and ankle issues from past injuries and felt after thinking about it more that she would be better off to do something more geared toward her physical restrictions. However she whole heartedly encouraged me to continue to go if I liked it and so I did! I started with one class a week at first and then over the course of a few months realized what a physical and mental benefit Krav Maga was adding to to my life. I made time in my life for the training and now 5 months in I'm going 3 to 4 times a week and have added some running and home workouts as well. I have learned a lot and excited to learn more, there is years and years worth to material to learn so it is always a challenge every class. I also bought a Krav Maga book recommended by one of the instructors and have used it to review after class what we learned and practice on my own. I found that doing some of the techniques in my pool is great practice and the water gives resistance to the moves and forces you to go slow and be more precise...and its relaxing. The long and short of it is East Valley Krav Maga Self Defense and Fitness in Tempe is worth every penny and I would say if you are looking for something to get fit other than going to a sweaty gym with everyone parading around like peacocks this might be just the fit you are looking for. It's never to late or to early to make positive life changes and take care of the most important thing in your life ...YOU! Once you help yourself you can then help others in many ways from a place of both mental and physical strength!
