It's funny that poke's unpretentious origin as "poor man's sushi" in Hawaii is now having its moment as a healthy casual dining option in wealthier or gentrified neighborhoods on the mainland. This location of Kaku Sushi and Poké in tony Bloomfield Hills is okay, but I was expecting better service and fish quality. I get the feeling that the place isn't well managed. The manager isn't friendly. He even pointed out to me in a condescending way that I take a lot of photographs. Why yes, I do take a lot of photographs for my Yelp reviews. FYI - I was recently recognized by Yelp as one of its biggest photo contributors in its Detroit market. I stood by the register and the manager was the only one outside. I stood there waiting and he just looked at me without even taking my order. He yelled out to one of his workers to come out from the kitchen to assist me. Ridiculous. Other issues include not having any water available for customers, not asking if I wanted water or another drink, and not having fresh napkins by the utensils. Also, no one acknowledged me on my way out. As for the food, the poke here is an example of taking Hawaii's comfort food and bastardizing it for suburbanites who have likely never truly tasted fresh ahi. My spicy ahi was minced mush. I can handle spice, but the flavor of the spicy sauce was overwhelming, I suspect to intentionally mask the taste of fish that isn't high quality or fresh. I could barely taste the salmon either. The cost of this bowl was over $15. I am doubtful that I'll ever find poke in metro Detroit that rivals the sashimi grade fresh chunks of ahi and salmon on sushi rice that I ate regularly in Hawaii, but there are better alternatives available for modern style poke. Pokéworks in Troy offers better service, a more extensive menu, and fresher fish. read more

I came in ready to order, and instead of taking my order (with no line and barely anyone in the restaurant), the staff rudely told me to "use the iPad" without even trying to assist or explain anything. Last time going to Kaku unfortunately. This is a great poke place; however, so much has changed (I have been going to both locations since they opened). First, prices increased and ingredients were removed from the menu but I continued to order weekly from them. Now, prices have continuously increased and they are giving smaller portions. For example, the large bowl used to be 4 scoops of fish, now it is 3 (for the same, increased price). Every additional topping (avocado, seaweed salad, etc.) has increased as well. Pineapple used to be included in the set bowl price, but now it is an additional price. It is just absolutely not worth going here anymore knowing how it used to be. I have also had issues of being overcharged for toppings. I purchased the seaweed salad to be on my bowl, but I have been charged for a whole side ($1.50 vs $3.50). It is the little things like this that are the reason I will no longer be returning. Wish things did not change this much, but it is what it is. read more

First time here. May give it a shot again but not sure. What I really liked: - very fresh tuna and salmon - loved the seaweed salad and crab salad What I did not like: - fresh scallops looked dried out around the edges (reminded me of frozen baby scallops that I used to buy that often had freezer burn around the edges). I know scallops can dry out quickly but they need to be moist or will be chewy - many toppings had a surcharge (just went to a poke place in Ann Arbor and they hard very few up charges ... and the overall price was lower there) - my own preference but the options for the bowl base was white rice, brown rice and arugula. I don't eat rice anymore as it's empty calories so that left arugula - which I found too bitter. - open basket with forks and spoons. I will fully admit that I am a germaphobe but I hate seeing unwrapped plasticwear in open baskets where everybody touches them fishing out their fork. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by the quality of fish (TUNA or AHI) and ingredients available here in MICHIGAN of all places! We've been here a hand full of times and have had good experiences overall. We've tried their tuna sushi rolls before, and thought they were good, but nothing remarkable that you couldn't get elsewhere. Price points are between $4-7, and they do have seasonal specials like Toro and Sea Urchin. The highlight of the place is their poké bowls, which we are fans of their Ahi tuna. The right side of the menu has a number of pre-sets that range from the ahi tuna, spicy tuna, salmon, tofu salad, shrimp and scallops, and salmon ponzu. If you're not in the mood to create your own, this is the area that you'll want to focus on. The portions are set for their large 24 oz. portion, so just keep that in mind. The prices range between $11-14, with the Ahi tuna being the highest priced. If you're feeling creative and fancy (or picky in our case ;)), you can create your own bowl. There are two sizes offered here at 16 oz., which is $10.50, and the 24 oz. at $14.50. You choose your base, protein, mix-ins, and it's a 6-step process. By the time you're done, your mouth will be salivating and ready to gobble the goodness down. If you're really disciplined, you can get it to go and enjoy it at home. :) Our go-to is the Ahi Tuna, and we've tried both the pre-set and created our own. The pre-set magic is in the arugula sprouts and the crispy garlic. It really brings out the base of the sushi rice and the tuna. The portion of tuna is fairly generous, but at 4 scoops, I wish there was an additional 2 to justify the $14 price tag. Overall, the space is clean and modern. They accept mobile pay, and have 5-6 tables for those who want to dine-in. Service can be slow if it's during a busy time, but the guys are pleasant in facilitating the flow. Placed order at 6:11, had an estimated pickup time of 6:41, was inside at 6:40 at the online pickup area and neither employee made eye contact with me until 6:49. Where have I been that I have never had Poke? I was looking for a new sushi spot and ran across Kaku Sushi & Poke, pronounced (poh-KAY) can't say it just say (okay then Poh-kay) and that's how you say it. I will get to the review in a minute, but wait. If you are reading this thinking about going, just go and read this between lights, lol! Turns out that Poke is a traditional Hawaiian dish and is a staple in Hawaii. When I walked in to the restaurant they were real laid back, yet super helpful. I of course asked what is Poke was and was told it was a deconstructed sushi. I looked up the meaning of "deconstruct" (later), I obviously know what it means, but Merriam's says it means "to adapt or separate the elements of for use in an ironic of radically new way". So Poke is similar to taking apart a very complicated sushi roll and then topping with all types of other tasty bits liked crunchy garlic, crunchy onions, pickled jalapeno, Hijiki seaweed, edamame, red onions, spinach, crab salad, mushrooms, roasted nuts, pineapple and the list goes on and on and on! The rub is this...in Hawaiian homes poke means "small piece" of yummy marinated raw fish. If raw fish is not your thing (not sure why that is) you can opt for marinated tofu or cooked shrimp was on the menu. However, I chose the salmon and my husband got the Ahi Tuna, both excellent choices. Okay, you select your toppings like you are at Chipotle. Except, there are many more choices and the majority are healthy choices, which is a bonus, for piling up on as many as you like. So for the review...I gave it a 5 which I rarely do (if ever - I will have to check), anyway even though I have never had Poke before I know good tasting food. I looked images and it actually it looked like the Hawaiian made or Japanese made Poke and it tasted amazing...so that is good enough for me! The first scoop in my mouth was like heaven on a stick (I was using chopsticks),SO good that I actually made a fool of myself while eating! I know that because, you can feel it when you look like a fool, but you don't care, because who are these people looking at me, anyway? Like, I was eating so fast, if someone had a camera on me they would have been dying...laughing at how I slapped in one chopstick full every few seconds! One of my first thoughts was, is this "concoction" really going to be good? Maybe I should have chose one off the menu, why did I insist on making it myself? But, I made a GREAT decision, I came and I conquered! Tip, I got a side of spicy mayo and wasabi, I used the original sauce in my Poke, the crab salad was must have, the spinach just made me feel good and I added pineapple for some sweetness and the crunchy garlic and onions...oh my...stop, just stop! I tried the salmon poke and my boyfriend had the spicy tuna poke. Both were fresh and delicious, but spicy tuna was more flavorful! The guy behind the counter was super friendly, so he gets 5 stars alone for customer service. However, at other poke restaurants, you get both salad AND rice in your bowl- not just one option (hence the four stars). I would definitely recommend trying this place out! read more

FINALLY there is a poke bowl in Detroit and it's make-your-own too! (think Chipotle but with fresh fish, tofu, quinoa, salad, vegetables and every kind of seaweed and topping you can imagine!) tips: just get the large.. you will be SO sad if you get a small one... you can MIX/MATCH your proteins!!! (the large gets 4 scoops so I do 2 spicy tuna and 2 tuna) Don't leave off pickled ginger or crunchy garlic topping.. You can have arugula AND rice too If you do not like things salty, ask for less sauce.. umami soy is very salty, ponzu less so You can taste the fish more clearly with less sauce too shitaki mushroom topping is AMAZING and he has LaCroix in his fridge!!! So happy not to see every sugary drink on the planet because that just kills the taste of poke... When I was on a poke kick I came here cuz it was on my way home. I ordered online so that I could just pick up when I got there. However , they may have been busy and didn't get to my order, but I still ended up waiting 20 mins for my order. I was basically ignored most the time I was standing in the pick up line as well. The poke was okay, not much flavor to it really. But the sushi I ordered was amazing. Yellowtail roll. The rice was cooked perfect with just the right amount of rice wine vinegar. My new favorite lunch hang out!!! Poke is plentiful in LA and Hawaii but not in Metro Detroit. We were a little cautious trying this new spot. From the first step this place was outstanding. The decor is crisp, fresh and modern. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and patient. She explained that we can make our own pole bowls or choose from a suggested menu. This is the Jappanese version of Chipolte...you pick a protein, rice ,toppings and sauce. They also havve miso soup, sushi and my favorite cucumber salad. We are pretty loyal Kaku customers, every time we dare to try another sushi place in the area we end up back at Kaku. The fish is always fresh, add ons like crab salad and avocado bring up the price, but imo are worthwhile. I am always happy with my food here, which says a lot for Michigan sushi. (I do wish they added a little more to the menu (onion soup and some more complex rolls would be stellar) but with the ability to customize the poke bowls there are still endless options. The owner is a really nice Japanese man, he owns both locations. Had a good conversation with him once about our trip to Japan, and how much he loved what he was doing with the restaurants here. Yes! Super pumped that this legit sushi and poké place has opened in Bloomfield. First of all, the owner of this restaurant was the executive chef from Ronin located in Royal Oak for 10 years. Ronin is one of the best quality and most creative sushi restaurants in metro Detroit. You can tell by taste and feel that the quality, freshness, and care was brought into Kaku. Poké is the highlight of this restaurant. If you don't know what poké is, think sushi bowl with a beautiful combination of raw fish, rice, seaweed, and a crap ton of fixings! They offer their customers a build your own poké, where the concept is similar to chipotle. Customers go down a line of fresh tasty options to choose from. Kaku also has some other poké options where the ingredients are already predetermined. In addition, there are many sushi roll options as well! Note the sushi rolls are not filled with all those crazy ingredients. Instead, they are simple, clean, and delicious. The way sushi is suppose to taste! First I'd like to say the food was very good and this post is about the customer service. I don't typically make reviews but my family and I couldn't believe how rude the young girl making our order was. It was so clear she would rather be anywhere than actually do her job. The entire experience ordering our bowls was awful and uncomfortable. Instead of being helpful she made rude and short toned comments back. She actually ruined my appetite by the time our food was ready. I believe the manager was their assisting and he was very nice but was witnessing the pure meanness of this young girl and didn't say a word, rather smirked. He tried to lighten the mood but the energy and attitude of this girl was beyond.
