Went there and got my very short hair just blown out. On first page of their website it says starting at $34. I called to ask them why I was charged $63 and the girls told me the starting with 34. I got that but why was I charged Double?? She said it was because it lasted 45 minutes. Absolutely not. The person who did my hair Amy Mary she was awesome. I still just don't understand why I almost got charged double. No answer given just "have a good day" I understand that you would like people to have a good day, but how about you answer someone instead of saying three times just have a good day!! Love this place! I was referred by my sister's friend. It's my new salon for hair cuts! If the mani/pedis were cheaper I'd try those too, but you get what you pay for and they use Aveeda products! My stylist is Lindsey and she is great! She was friendly from the beginning when she happen to be at the register when I walked in. She gave me exactly what I wanted and actually exceeded my expectations! I'm very particular about who I let touch my natural and healthy hair! She trimmed my ends and brushed up my layers. She even thinned out my hair to remove excess bulk that was weighing down my hair! My layers mix smoothly with the rest of my hair and she framed my face nicely! This is my now my go to place to get my hair cut! They offer 3 levels of hairstylists. Lindsey is a junior stylist at the $38 price which I am perfectly comfortable paying! The other 2 stylists are higher priced, but also maybe can do more? Check them out for yourself! They also sell LipSense products. read more

I have lived in Amherst for about two years now but just recently discovered Kalu at the end of summer. On a whim I had decided to cut my long long hair into a short pixie cut. I came in and Allison cut my hair and she was awesome. I have come back monthly since and been extremely happy. Allison has also dyed my eyebrows. I hadn't given my hair much thought until Kalu closed temporarily due to Covid and I was due for a trim. Since my hair is short I knew I needed to maintain it and was forced to seek out another salon in a nearby county. All I can say is that Allison's cut and style is a work of art compared to this other cut and style I received. Cannot wait to get back in and have her fix my hair haha. I'd highly recommend her and Kalu. I also enjoy my experience every time I go there. Atmosphere is great and overall a quality experience. read more

I spent $200 for them to not even do a balayage correctly. There's straight lines all over my head! She told me to come back and she would fix it for free and she ended up putting more straight lines across my head.. very disappointed I tipped her $50 ( which totaled to $250!!) because she was super nice and seemed like she knew what she was doing. Once I got home I realized it was the way she curled and styled my hair that made me like it in the salon. I got home and looked in the mirror after I had showered and my hair was completely ruined. I've been coming to this Salon & Day Spa for years now and they go above and beyond my expectations each and every time! The majority of my time spent here is for the Elemental Facial with Alyse. This facial is AAAHHHHMMAZING! Alyse will assess your skin and discuss your areas of concern with you. There are no extractions done with the facials here which I like! All of the products that are used are Aveda products which are made with organic ingredients and in-line with Ayurvedic principles. Taking care of your skin should be a part of your beauty routine and maintenance. Why not take a day or night and treat yourself with a wonderful and relaxing experience!!! I prefer to do my facials in the evening so I can go straight home and to bed completely hydrated. I've also had massages (Jason is fantastic), waxing, manicures, and pedicures done here. I've yet to have my hair done here but I've seen first hand the beautiful work done by the stylists here. Don't forget to pick up and restock on your Aveda hair and skin care products as they have them in stock right in the salon available for purchase which is sooo convenient! I'm super disappointed with my experience here. The Yelp reviews have you believe it's a great place when in fact, it's just not. Before I elaborate with my review, I must say Jason is a phenomenal attribute to the spa. He is the only masseuse. We bought two massages thinking it'd be a couples thing, but we were out of luck. Really bummed they didn't tell us until after we signed the receipt that we had to go one at a time. Instead of sitting there an hour each twiddling our thumbs, we purchased pedi packages. The new hire performing our pedicures is just horrific. She was swearing while talking, sharing unpleasant stories, and on top of that did a terrible job. We didn't get anything the package offered except a paint job. Jason intentionally didn't touch our legs because the pedicure we paid for was supposed to include massages. When I told the front desk, they still charged us, just for the cheaper pedicure which was still not worth the money spent. I'm very disappointed with my time here. I have two gift certificates I wish I could get refunded because now they're just going to waste. read more

Having very fine, wavy hair I've always been reluctant to try new hair stylist. My first time in the salon was no exception but having been in the Buffalo area for 5 years with no luck I gave Kalu a try. Junior was very knowledgeable which put me at ease. He was absolutely amazing with my hair. I've been to him twice and I will continue to go back. Absolutely love his work its phenomenal! I've recently switch from my regular nail salon and started using Shannon, she gives an amazing manicure. I gave this salon a try, but I won't return. The haircut was VERY SUPERCUTS style which I can't do as a working professional. I feel like a total idiot now and I don't really know how I'm going to go into work like this. I feel bad leaving the review since Alex was nice but I know people rely on Yelp for reviews and this just was NOT a great experience for me. I felt like the girl was running out of time yet I was still charged for a full haircut which to me seems like I should have been given I don't know, an actual haircut. I told her at the beginning if she didn't have time to do the dye&haircut that I just wanted a good haircut. Instead, she tried to fit in both and then did poorly with both. I said I wanted layers and she didn't put any. I had to ask for the hair to be framed around my face which seems pretty 101 and even that was me just trying to salvage what I had left. Literally, this is why girls avoid salons after experiences like this. Feeling so horrible and knowing at that point there is little you can do to go back- especially if you feel awkward telling someone you do not like their work. I paid $174.00 dollars for this crap and now I get to walk around looking like a straight up 12-year-old.. read more

This place was surprisingly nice. It doesn't look like much from the outside as it is in a strip mall next to an ice cream parlor. I would never have even noticed it if I hadn't gotten a groupon for it. There is a salon in the front, but then you go to the back where there is a really nice spa. It is surprisingly big and I can see that it would be good for groups. I had an express facial and massage. Let me start by saying that I am not the biggest fan of facials. I wouldn't have gotten a facial if it weren't for the groupon. I feel like I am usually just paying people a lot of money to tell me that my skin is bad and I should buy a lot of products. This was not like that. John did my facial and he was great. It felt very nice and relaxing. It was very peaceful and he didn't try to make me buy anything. My only complaint was that I really felt like I needed a shower afterward and they don't have showers there. I had some gritty stuff still remaining on my skin and my hair looked crazy. I am a big fan of massages though and i get them quite a bit. Nicole (Nicky?) did my massage and well sadly it wasn't very good. Perhaps my fault for not giving her more feedback but It was really not very comfortable. She didn't have enough lotion/oil on her hand and it just kinda felt like pulling on my skin. I dunno she seemed really nice but I found it neither relaxing nor therapeutic. It is a nice space though so I would try again with a different massage therapist. read more

I visited Kalu with 5 of my friends for Martini Thursday. They have a $20 manicure special that includes a Cosmo. I've had better manicures...and I've had better Cosmos...but the atmosphere was pretty nice for being located in a strip mall a stone's throw from wheatfield. The back part of the salon is really tranquil and a nice space for groups, like we had. For 15 dollars extra I got a gel manicure. It was my first, and I'm extremely pleased with it. A friend of mine who has gotten many a gel manicure said they are cheaper at other salons...but the Kalu staff explained that they use a different brand name than most. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the actual manicure. The $35 covered the application of the gel and a smear of lotion on part of my hands and wrists. I've had manicures that include hand washing, massage, nail care, and polish application for half the price. The girl didn't even clean out under my nails...and I chose a really transluscent pink shimmer color that looks like a shiny natural nail, so you could still see junk under my nails once all was said and done. There were still 4 girls in our group who had to go after me so while we were all sitting around chatting I borrowed a nail tool and did it myself. Although I was disapointed with the logistics of the actual process of the manicure, the nail techs were really personable and we all had a great time chatting and sipping on our drinkies. Overall, I really like the idea/concept. It is a decently decorated space and the staff is nice. ...but it was too expensive for what I got. :/ OHHH and I forgot to use my Yelp Check-In Deal (10% off your first visit) grrrrrr! Not convinced I will be back....but could be convinced if a group was going because we did have fun. read more

Did the Mother's Day special today at Kalu. Reception staff was great as well as The facial by Michele who really did a lovely relaxing treatment!!! Felt very comfortable and facial was one of the best I have had in a pretty long time. She also made me feel safe as she maintained covid requirements wearing her mask and washing her hands throughout session. The massage therapist really surprised me when I opened my eyes to find she had removed her mask!! She did reapply it when she saw me covering my nose and mouth with the sheet. What really made it even worse was she talked throughout the entire session about how she and her family had covid and "it wasn't so bad", also that she had just gotten her first vaccination that week!!! I have to say I left there feeling sick and angry. WTF The customer has to sign a form prior to receiving services and i really felt Kalu failed to assure that their staff abided by cdc regulations to protect their clients. read more

I'm giving them 2 stars, because the potential is so great in their location. The standard strip mall salon with a well decorated interior. I only had waxing and nails done here, so I do not have experience with their other services. I've had the pedicure and manicure winter special, and I was not impressed and even at the "reduced" rate I was disappointed and thought I still overpaid for the quick non detailed service I received. In addition, after repeated brazilians I began to notice repeated irritation which I brought up to my waxer and she said it was nothing to worry about. However after repeated visits I noticed a decline in the treatment I received and I noticed they double dip on the wood depressor sticks. It was already just eh due to their use of hot wax and $50, but the double dip sent me on my merry way and to never return. read more

Visited Kalu twice since my last review and still loving it! The staff is professional and well trained. I was really impressed with the attention given to my pedicure, she was really being a perfectionist with it and has raised the standard for other salons for me! It's only downside it that it's a little difficult to find because it's in a plaza that's a little sunken from the road. I love everything about this salon - the atmosphere, the wide range of services and product, but mostly the people. Domjnae and Jenn both do a beautiful job with hair cut and color. Amanda is a rock star with nails and ALWAYS helps me find just the perfect color. I'd never heard of lash extensions before, but now I don't know what I'd do without Sam making my eyes beautiful. No more need for mascara! Kari at reception always makes me feel welcome and knows everything there is to know about Aveda products. I am thrilled to have found this gem. Oh, and they serve the best hot tea! The only drawback - Monday's were my favorite days to go and they will be closed on Mondays starting now through wedding season so they may have more staff on weekends. Shannon does an amazing job with manicures (and pedis)...plus she reads the CND book to come up with fun funky nail art. My green with black streaks manicure lasted THREE weeks, which is amazeballs even for a gel. I wish I lived in town and didn't stay in a hotel so far away, I'd definitely be back more often. My only complaint is no dryers for the toesies. No matter how careful I am, I need 10 mins or so of drying time, or I'm gonna smudge. Especially so in the winter time... read more

I recently had a bachelorette party at Kalu, and it was really a lot of fun. They have a nice room with a couch and table where you can bring snacks and drinks while waiting for your services. I had a massage and facial. My massage was really, really good. I felt incredibly relaxed afterward. I had never had a facial before and was unsure what the expect, and I found that my skin just glowed afterward. All the employees were completely pleasant. My only two little complaints were that I felt like time management could be improved. There was one point where everyone else was away having treatments, and I was alone. It just took a while for my services to start. Not the end of the world. Also, like all of these spas in strip malls, the walls are thin. So, if you have a group of girls talking and laughing in the next room, you can hear them during your massage. I had no problem blocking them out and focusing, but I feel like others might not be so lucky. read more

I have only been to this salon once but Overall pleased. My mother in law had purchased a gift certificate for me. It is an aveda salon which is true love to me. I had worked a few years back in an all aveda salon and from the moment i walked in the aroma melted me. its like an addiction. the staff was all very friendly. I could tell I must have been booked for my cut between color services bc my stylist was not the one to wash or dry my hair...but having worked in a salon before it really didnt bother me at all. There is only one place in all of WNY that I would recommend for massage therapy and that is Kalu Salon & Day Spa. I know everyone goes for different reasons, but for me, I sustained a severe shoulder injury while participating in a competition about two years ago. After having gone to a Chiropractor and Physical Therapist (neither of which worked), I tried massage therapy. Jason at Kalu, is by far the best in being able to pinpoint where the trouble spots. I am heading back to another competition in November with complete confidence that my shoulder will be back to normal. read more

I used to absolutely love this place. This was my hands down favorite place to get my hair done. I don't know what happened. I just got my hair cut about a couple weeks ago and the cut was basic after beauty school but with no passion behind the cut, maybe if the hairdresser was so concerned with curling my hair(which I didn't ask for) I could've gotten a better experience and cut. Definitely not what I would expect from a $40 haircut. Maybe from Supercuts. Also got my nails done back in November and my nails turned out okay but my moms nails looked like they were done by an amateur. I won't be going back. I don't know what happened to this place. It's very saddening to see the salon you loved and gloated about start to go down hill. Still a huge fan of Kalu and have been going for regular gel manicures with Shannon. She is very thorough and does a great job- if I get a pale pink color I can often extend the life for about 3 weeks with my nails looking decent. it's a little pricier for the gel at this salon than other places but I think it's worth it. I've had the best luck with my nails at this salon with Shannon. My nails always look good now! read more

Kalu is my go to place for my hair. Sue is my very competent stylist. I find the entire staff friendly and professional. The salon is very clean and attractive and large enough to not be on top of other clients. Yes, Kalu is in a strip mall, but it is directly across from Zebs so it should be easy to spot while driving down the Boulevard. (In fact, a LOT of hair salons are in a strip mall so I don't see that as a negative.) Overall....my visits to Kalu are always most pleasant. read more
