the peppercorn steak From last night!
    Hazel M.

Kalvas is our Go To place in Parksville for delicious steak and seafood dinners. Last night my family planned our special visit and enjoyed seared scallops, steaks, halibut and prime rib. (Yes it included Yorkies!) We sat near the fireplace and enjoyed impeccable service by Gavin and Hank. The food was delightful, as usual, and prepared by the owner, David. We did not save room For desserts though can attest that each item (homemade) is absolutely top notch! (Hazelnut crème brûlée, anyone?!) call ahead for reso and say hi from the Meredith's when you go.

It was a great pleasure been served by Ilonka, very elegantly, courteously and professionally. The restaurant is beautiful and cozy and the culinary is very delicious . We were 3 and we enjoyed the crab cakes appetizer, 2 veal Schnitzel and chicken with prosciutto . The dishes well served, generous portion and delicious wine . We came from Vancouver to visit around and we will come back .

The prawns and scallops. I remembered to take a picture just before I finished them

Old school seafood and steak house. The service was attentive. The food and drinks were delicious. They rated good for this price point. I had the scallops and prawns. My wife the crab cakes. We split a beet and goat cheese salad. It was more that enough. I am typically not a fan of this salad. This one change my mind.

This is an amazing building-a resort sized log building. A warm atmosphere, with welcoming staff. We enjoyed the fresh Halibut and schnitzel. The service was prompt and friendly, very experienced. I would recommend this to any local or traveler seeking a lovely meal with a warm atmosphere.

I started with the flavorful lemon merengue martini. Yum! The wine selection was pleasing, and we able to order both a chardonnay and a cabernet. My husband had the potato leek soup and I enjoyed the stuffed mushroom caps as our appetizers. They were both delicious! For dinner, he had the special of the day - stuffed chicken with Mashed potatoes and vegetables. The chicken was perfection and the mashed potatoes were incredible. I had the seafood crepe with garlic bread and vegetables. I'm so glad I tried this! It was rich and savory, without feeling too heavy. To finish things off, we shared the sticky date cake - a dessert that is a must-try. It's clear that they take great pride in their food, beverages and service. Other than recommending every item we ordered, I'd also suggest making a reservation ahead of time since this is a small restaurant. You won't be disappointed dining at Chameleons!

First visit we bought shrimp cakes. You know if you don't mix jello enough, there's a layer of thick rubber at the bottom? That's the consistency of the shrimp cakes. The next time I asked if the crab cakes were any different, and she said if you don't like the consistency of the shrimp cakes, you're not going to like the consistency of the crab cakes. Second visit was for halibut. Not fresh, but apparently flash frozen and cut the same day as it is sold. Was extremely watery, so...... Third visit is a charm - or not! Fresh sockeye salmon for $27.99 a pound. They were not deboned so I spent half an hour deboning four fillets. Of the four, one still had a section of bone attached to the side which had to be trimmed. One fillet had a large section of fat that had to be trimmed. There goes about $6. Our server was funny and engaging, but perhaps a little flippant. He also had to go back into the kitchen numerous times to check if they had things that were on the menu. They make gyoza in house, and it is one of my favourites. 6 PM reservation and they are out already with barely a soul in the place. Our beverages were pretty good, so we soldiered on at ordered our entrees one grilled halibut, one seafood pasta and two bbq ribs. Once the food arrived I was surprised at how small the halibut was given the price. That was nothing in comparison to the two that ordered the baby back ribs. Normally they fall off the bone when the professionals cook them, not this time. It was fork and knife time to get them off the bone which is totally wrong. I could go on, but you get the idea. I doubt we'd come back. Shame to have a place on the water and then serve food like that.

Housekeeping was highly attentive and the in room amenities were well-selected! The staff of the Bayside are some of the best - kind, attentive and truly responsive! The only negatives worth noting were the lack of "puppy potty locations" most (located to the back of the parking area) were muddy and not very accommodating and the staff in the cafe were unfamiliar with certain style lattes (which will come over time) other than this, great stay, truly affordable and appreciated by all of our family!

Our dinner in December was a mixture of excellent service and very average food. This time we ate dinner elsewhere but stopped in for breakfast on our departure day, and boy do we wish we hadn't. The lovely K was on a call so I went down and ordered our breakfasts, she poached soft eggs, me sunny up. Both crispy bacon, potatoes and toast. We were the only people in the place at 9:40 AM which should be an obvious red flag. Our previous experience had me concerned, but our timeline dictated it was this place or nothing until the ferry, which is not really an option either. The crispy bacon was fatty and swimming in bacon grease, the potatoes tasted off, the poached eggs very nice, my sunny up had a good skin on them, obviously under the warmer while eggs were poached. The toast almost crumbled when bitten into. Peanut butter and jam were asked for, and delivered. The peanut butter was fine, but the jam was so runny it wouldn't stick to the knife. I ate the eggs and the toast and left everything else as did K. I can't express how bad it was. Our waitress was out setting tables in the attached tent while people waited to be sat. One gentleman actually sat himself, I mentioned he may want to go elsewhere. Hated to do that, but........ We spoke to our server and she was very apologetic, and it looked like the apology was a common refrain. We will for sure stay at the hotel again, but will not set foot in that restaurant again, I'd rather go hungry.
