What a great meal, with exceptional service! They were kind enough to seat us a little late in the service as two of our guests were from out of town and could only get there for a 7 PM reservation. The place is a round log frame building that is quite spectacular inside of you are a log fan. This time of year in Parksville is pretty quiet, most places make hay in the summer and shutter for the slow season All of our food was delicious, prepared with care. Now to be fair there was hardly anyone in the place other than us five, so the kitchen wasn't slammed with people. That all said we enjoyed a wonderful, if somewhat pricey dinner, that would bring us back again! read more

Went in on our way to Nanaimo from Denman island to get dinner. It seemed busy and the manager/ owner? Greeted us and we asked for a table for 2. He asked if we had called earlier and we said no. He said he had a table but he would need it for a 7pm booking they had and if that was ok. It was about 530 so that was plenty of time for us to finish and we accepted the table. We ordered seafood chowder, oyster Rockefeller, seafood sampler, and a lobster tail. Everything we had tasted wonderful. The rice pilaf that came with the sampler was cooked perfectly. Beautiful rice separation, nice mixture of celery, carrots, wild rice and either leek or onion; nicely seasoned. The halibut and salmon were cooked nicely and had a lovely cream sauce. Veggies nice and al dente. Oyster Rockefeller tasty and fresh. Lobster cooked beautifully, was tender and with hot butter to dip was lush. Seafood chowder was the right texture and consistency, not too thin not to thick and enough seafood to be proud of its name. For dessert the special of the night was a flourless chocolate torte served with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. That was delicious, not overly sweet and had a nice chocolate flavour and texture was nice and smooth. The service was impeccable, water was always filled and the manager or another server always asked if every thing was alright and or if we were happy. But also you can see with how busy it was they would go off to tend other tables. That being said the fact they take the time to ask and make sure you are taken care of is awesome. I've been to fine dining where the serve disappears and doesn't ever ask how things are until like the last 10 minutes. Overall for an impromptu dinner here we were pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I would recommend dining here if your in the area, reservations might be best as this was a Monday and they were packed. read more

Kalvas is our Go To place in Parksville for delicious steak and seafood dinners. Last night my family planned our special visit and enjoyed seared scallops, steaks, halibut and prime rib. (Yes it included Yorkies!) We sat near the fireplace and enjoyed impeccable service by Gavin and Hank. The food was delightful, as usual, and prepared by the owner, David. We did not save room For desserts though can attest that each item (homemade) is absolutely top notch! This is an amazing building-a resort sized log building. A warm atmosphere, with welcoming staff. We enjoyed the fresh Halibut and schnitzel. The service was prompt and friendly, very experienced. Kalvas was very close to our hotel. We drove because it was a rainy night and not pleasant for walking on a dark and stormy night. I really like the interior of the restaurant. It has nice high ceilings and it is like a beautiful log house. A very cozy ambiance on a cold rainy night. We had reservations and when we arrived our table was not quite ready. The receptionist was very cool and abrupt. She told us to take a seat and wait for our table to be set up. We were give a great window seat that had a couple of screens separating it from other diners. Perfect. Our server was also very cool and not very personable. Is it us? We certainly didn't feel very welcome at all during our evening at Kalvas. Seated, food served, now get out. My husband had the Thanksgiving dinner special that included butternut squash soup, roast turkey with all the trimmings and dessert. The dessert was pumpkin pie but our waitress said that he could substitute another dessert if he wanted. He decided to substitute the apple crumble pie a'la mode. I ordered the salmon with creamed leek and spinach and served with seasonal vegetables and rice pilaf. The food was delicious and the servings very generous portions. For the quality of the food and presentation it was fair value. If the service had been better I would give Kalvas a 5* rating but we did not feel like we were at all welcome. read more

Date night was sweet and simple. What I enjoyed was the log cabin setting, it felt warm and cozy. The food met our expectations and we were satisfied. The cheesecake was delicious and the walk on the beach afterwards was stunning. The only thing I can criticize about our experience is the lack of hospitality from the waitress/host. Not sure why but her mood was down and honestly I don't spend money dinning our to feel the employees negative mood. Luckily it passed and we continued with our evening. read more

This restaurant was a recommendation from the concierge at our hotel. It was a good one. Our waiter was fantastic and checked on us frequently. I was given a very good wine suggestion as well as the entree. The food was very good, both my husband's seafood and my prosciutto wrapped chicken in a apricot cream sauce. We had the Cesar salad which was not fresh. The salad dressing was not fresh made from a bottle. The steak was tough not medium rare as I ordered. The Veal was a small piece but very bland. Potatoes and veggies need some butter and maybe some garlic to bring them out of its blandness. $180 for two people is a highway robbery for very bland food. It is a busy long weekend so we called at 7:30 to ask if a table was available and the guy in the phone said yes but we have to order before 8:00. We show up 10 min later and he said there's no table for us. I told him we just called and he reluctantly got a table for us. We aren't used to things closing so early, as we are from Vancouver where they welcome customers later. He wasn't very nice but our busy waitress was very kind and professional. Ambience - cute, cozy, elegance with white napkins, a fresh carnation and candle at the tables Food - NY steak and prawns were delicious. They were out of scallops and mussels (due to the truckers' convoy we were told). Rockefeller oysters were yummy. Got the seafood platter and they gave me a few extra prawns in place of the scallops. Prawns were tasty, the halibut and salmon lacked flavour and moistness. Needed salt or something. The lamb shank was very tender but not flavoured right. Maybe because we were a late guest at 7:40pm on a long weekend ? Bill was about $200 for 1 appy, 3 mains, 4 cocktails. It was ok but we won't be back. read more

Thank you for accommodating our large group of 17 people for dinner on Tuesday. We were staying at the nearby resort and wanted to celebrate a birthday. Due to the worker shortage, we were having a hard time finding a restaurant that could handle such a large group. You were gracious and able to serve us great food in a very timely manner. Went for dinner monday evening with my fiance, the interior was like a huge log cabin style decor, very warming. We were greeted immediately and shown our table, the background music was Frank Sinatra,Dean Martin and Louis Armstrong, very nice. Ordered the escargot for starters and was not disappointed, very tasteful with the garlic butter and bread to sop up the remainder of the butter.I ordered the lamb shank with whipped garlic potatoes and local vegetables. The potatoes were very creamy(through a potato press im sure) the lamb shank was good and tender but did lack flavour as im a great Ossco Bucco cook myself. The veggies were good but not memorable. My fiance had the escargot as well as the prawn dish, prawns were very fresh and large, she enjoyed the escargot too, she also had the crab cakes and they were spot on,not dry at all and a nice crust on the outside. Next time i will order the prime rib! All in all our meals were awesome and would go back again soon, This is a upper scale restaurant so the prices are a little high but well worth it as all the staff there was gracious and polite and the service was perfect. read more

A great seafood meal. We started with the local oysters and they we excellent. We then shared two main courses. The seafood mixer (with salmon 4/5, snapper 3/5, halibut 3.5/5, and a prawn/scallop mix 3/5) and the scallop and prawn skillet (4:5). Both came with vegetables (3.5/5, which included a really nice yellow beet) and a choice of sides. We had the roasted potatoes (3.5/5) and the German noodles (with a name staring with an 's' that I couldn't pronounce) (2/5). The waiter tried very hard but seemed awful nervous. Even split an entire glass of water across the table. He sincerely apologized and you couldn't help but to feel bad for him. All and all a great experience and well worth the trip. read more

Wait staff was invisible. The Filet Mignon was small and had grizzle in it. Poor. When compared to the Keg - there simply is no comparison. Our party of 4 had the Halibut, Tuna and Filet. We started with some great crab cakes and then had the fantastic scallop and shrimp skillet. I wasn't thrilled with the scallops, but the shrimp and the cheese sauce were delicious. We also ordered the sole almandine which was uninteresting and disappointing. All of the sides were good (steamed carrot and broccoli with a tarragon sauce, good mashed and roasted potatoes, and a beet). Total for two people was $62 plus tip. There was a guitarist performing instrumental classical guitar versions of rock songs. Nice place and would go again, but stick to safer menu choices. read more

We chose this restaurant for an important anniversary celebration with the family. At first, they were not sure they could take 11 of us, because of staff shortages, but eventually we got in. And we were so glad we did! Everyone ordered a different dish (and we did have kids with us) and all were excellent. Our server was attentive and helpful. Did a great job. We were staying in town at the Thai-na-Mara Resort for 4 nights and decided to check this place out and we are really glad we did! What a gem in the heart of Parksville. Like where did this place pop out of? They had everything down to a T! Ambiance truly is everything and they paid attention to detail from the temperature to the lighting to the tunes they played from Sinatra to classic oldies. Candle light, very friendly attentive service. Now we are used to fine dining coming from the best restaurants in Vancouver but they give small portions due to high rent most likely but this place had fine dining with large portions and you get your money's worth. Best lobster I've ever had and as you can see by how many restaurants I go to on my yelp that's no easy feat so kuddos to the chef! My husband had steak and prawns and the prawns were huge and steak was cooked to perfection. The Yorkshire pudding omg don't even get me going on that yummy! The apply crumble is fresh baked in the restaurant like all their pastries and it's so crispy and flaky and in all honestly the best we've EVER had. This place is amazing!!! Our experience was very poor, the most disappointing Christmas meal I've ever had. Staying from out of town, menu stated that Roast Beef dinner was served Friday nights and that is what my husband and myself were looking forward to after our long drive up island. Being forced to choose another entre Brie & Prosciutto Chicken turned out to be tasteless. Brie non existent, prosciutto made the chicken salty, not plump and juicy at all, and was covered in a white sauce that also had no favour to it, this dish was $30.00s. It was not worth the money.Our total dinner expense came to over $90.00 dollars. The service was good but the food for Christmas Day was definitely not; I had eaten there many time in the past, years ago and it was very good then. We were greeted by the very hospitable host upon arrival and promptly shown to our table. The female server who attended our table was efficient and friendly with a professional knowledge of table service beyond what we have experienced in even high end fine dining establishments. I give the service a 5 star. The restaurant was impeccably clean, music nice and the atmosphere overall very welcoming and relaxing. The decor was so cool! It had the nicest interior, like an old log cabin in the mountains. Server was really cool and friendly. The vibe was good. The only thing that sucked was the food. Fries were good but chicken left something to be desired. We got a good vibe from where we were sitting, but all the old people I walked by on my way to the bathroom glared at me.
