Second time in this hotel restaurant inside of a week. Both nights had large crowds attending a theatre event around the corner. Not surprisingly they were very busy. That said, we were there for both "slammed" situations, and endured little, to no, service. Our server last night had no answers to our menu questions and spent entirely too much time leaving us to ask someone else. Specials, fish of the day, etc should be a part of the offering that is well known and sold by the wait staff. We find hotel chain restaurants to be sub-par in general, but this Coast hotel disappointed twice inside of a week. The space is nicely appointed, but we found the folks that followed us in were looking to watch the hockey playoffs at 8 PM. Should be prime dinner/date night out. Overall, so average, which you are not looking for out of a Coast hotel situated a few hundred meters from the ocean. read more

It had been awhile since we had gone to dinner here, we had a reservation and upon walking into dining room it was not as inviting as in the past. White table cloths and cloth napkins no more, candle holders on table were empty. Over priced meals for quality, vegetables so hard the table knife couldn't cut, had the halibut and prawn dinners, not worthy of the price charged. Meals dropped off and we were half way thru before even checked on. No offer of ordering appetizers, 2nd drink, no bread. Wish we would of gone to our other choice of hotel to eat. The Bastion hotel is chic and quaint, the restaurant is nice, the service was good. We found the wine list had a great selection of BC wines, although they could carry a bit higher end selection. I had the steak which was perfect. We also enjoyed a few apples which were all fabulous! The dinning experience finished off with desert and a live performance. It was the perfect ambiance and we ended up staying to drink at the bar. Loved the live music! read more

I like this place for it's friendly service and good food. The server was kind and helpful. I share a main entree with a friend as the portions for the fish and chips were large. The fish was well cooked. It is on the pricier side, but worth it if you want to share with someone. It is not a place that sticks out, but a good place for comfort food. read more

I enjoyed every second at Minnoz with 8 other friends. It's usually a hit or miss on hotel restaurants.

Let's be real: we went here right after hopping off the first ferry from Horseshoe Bay because we needed breakfast, yes, but mostly because of the Nanaimo bar cheesecake. And even though it's not on the menu, they do serve it at breakfast! You just need to ask! And do ask, because the Nanaimo bar cheesecake is delicious. The crumbly chocolate crust on the bottom has a lovely texture, the thick central custardy cheesecake layer in the center is rich and filling without being too sweet, and the chocolate ganache layer on top is the perfect topping. It works really well as both a cheesecake and a play on the Nanaimo bar theme, I think, and a single portion is more than enough to split between a family of four. As for the rest - service was actually really great, with very attentive and friendly staff. The space itself is bright and fairly spacious, and the standard menu items, while they are quite standard, are also perfectly good. As a place to get a familiar breakfast and a special local treat, especially if you're starting on a deliciously unhealthy tour of the city's coffee shops and bakeries, this is a good place to visit! read more

Very expensive , horrible food & very little , it had 2 appy choices which were ridiculously priced, under staffed , no gluten free options , chairs were so uncomfortable, waited an hour to get our food , don't waste your money , it did have nice windows & the staff was nice I felt sorry for them running around like chickens, it's too bad this place use to be so great , but I'm not going back unless they change their menu read more

5 Stars for the Nanaimo Bar Cheesecake! Staying at Nanaimo for less than 24 hours, my husband and I could only have lunch and lots of Nanaimo Bar there. So we ordered a take out Nanaimo Bar Cheesecake @ Minnoz. Although it was a take out, they still arranged it nicely for us. And of course, it looked like, tasted like and smelled like Nanaimo Bar, but it was not as sweet as traditional Nanaimo Bar. The sweetness was prefect for us! I would say I like this cheesecake more than regular nanaimo bar. read more

Well i wasn't expecting much. THe Minnoz is based in the Coast Bastion Inn where I was staying for a meeting and I needed lunch. Really just wanted soup or salad...kinda hard to mess up. I had the "Minnoz salad" which had dried apricots, pecans and crispy proscuitto. The dressing, over abundance of apricots and lack of proscuitto (i think i had 3 pieces smaller than a dime) made the whole thing WAY sweet. What i appreciated though was that the waitress actually wanted to know what I thought about it and took the critique really well. Always like that. Most importantly though they had a "gluten-free" star designation on the menu but the only items that applied were the salads. Bahahahahahaha!! Oh Minnoz.... (shaking head) read more

I spent two nights in Nanaimo and this was the best service I had my whole trip. Waitress was super friendly and attentive. Food was great too. High quality food at smaller portions made me able to have an appetizer, main, and dessert. And wine! Great selection of BC local wines. Would definitely come back. read more

Pretty expensive for what you get. I've been here a few times and am always floored when the bill comes.

One negative: don't get the crab cakes. $18 for one, $28 for two but utterly about bread crumbs and flakes. No lumps of crab meat in sight- thus, absurdly overpriced. Otherwise the wine list is good and well priced, the lobster ravioli puttanesca is excellent, the Caesar salad, salmon and beef burgers truly solid and well priced, and the creme brûlée outstanding. Excellent atmosphere and view (of the harbour/bastion). Just don't bother with crab cakes. read more

Just finished catering a Thanksgiving event so did not want to cook any more, and figured I'd treat a friend and myself to what I hoped would be a Thanksgiving dinner at one of the better hotels in Nanaimo. Minnoz offered a prix fixe menu for $40. While the salad and main meal were great, I could not believe that the restaurant served frozen Sysco or GFS pies (commercial food supplier to restaurants). The ice crystals were still melting on my pre-cut pumpkin pie slice. Of course the crust was the texture of defrosted mechanically made pie dough. What a let down. We stayed at the Coast hotel and couldn't find anything open on a Sunday so we decided to try a hotel restaurant. It was actually surprisingly good. The dishes were good portions and they also have a kids menu. Service was friendly but a bit slow. There's some decent views. The Nanaimo bar cheesecake was delicious and not too sweet. After a long day at work - you can only make it downstairs to the hotel restaurant. Located in Coast Bastion, Minnoz Lounge and Restaurant is what they offer. Ambience - Totally cool and uptown. You feel trendy with the dripping chandeliers, plush seats, open concept seating and great views of downtown. Food - Amazing. I ordered the starter size Caesar salad, Seafood Clam Chowder and Cordon Bleu. The salad was crisp and crunchy which is refreshing. If you don't get anything else - get the Seafood Clam Chowder! It was rich, flavorful and plentiful in ingredients. I wasn't expecting much with the Cordon Bleu but I was surprised. The elements were all beautifully seasoned and every component had a purpose. It featured a creamy risotto, puree edamame, potatoes, asparagus, baby carrots and cheese sauce with the chicken. Service: This was why it lost the star. It was disappointing. Food was prompt to arrive but server couldn't offer any suggestions when asked and didn't seem very enthusiastic. Value: The whole bill was less than $40 with an alcoholic beverage and I feel I received top notch food quality for what I paid. Totally surprised and recommend the food! read more

Stayed at the Coast hotel a couple of nights, Minnoz is the restaurant attached to the hotel. We arrived on Christmas Day excited to try several things on the menu but unfortunately they were only serving a three course, prefix menu for $45 per person. The prefix menu had a salad course, the usual turkey or ham holiday dinner entree options, and apple pie or pumpkin pie for dessert, all items we didn't want. We asked if it was possible to order anything on the regular menu, they offered chicken wings and calamari so that's what we had for dinner. The food was fine, it just wasn't what we wanted. We were grateful they offered something other than prefix options at least. We will probably try the menu again another time. read more

I know it's a hotel restaurant, and I know those typically have a bad reputation, but Minnoz is better than average. I've stayed here four times now and I really enjoy having dinner at the bar. The bartenders are always in a good mood and the service is great. I've had the salmon with shrimp and scallops and the veggie lasagna, and again I wouldn't take a sea plane to get here to have either one but if you're staying in Nanaimo it's a fine choice. Traveling from out of town.....overnighted and was the only place open on early sunday morning. Very surprised by the good service and size of breakfast. had the oatmeal which was huge with big bowl of fruit. server was bright eyed and helpful. she cared about my experience and was very friendly. exceptional for a hotel chain, above and beyond. will be back next time and will be my first choice for breakfast downtown. read more

Special portion of osso bucco was rather small and the braised short ribs were a bit tough. Pretty nice selection of wines. Great pub in downtown Nanaimo. It starts with a warm greeting form the manager Rahul. Always cheerful followed by a great waitress staff with Gale, Alisha and few others. We always enjoy our evenings at this great pub/restaurant in downtown Nanaimo. The chef's produce a consistent range of fine food every time. The quality far exceeds any other pub on the island. We are lucky to have such nice people serving us good food and great drinks every time we visit. Keep up the good work but do change the happy hour menu more often.
