What a surprise! I came here with my parents to try the Dine About menu. My dad opted to get food from the regular menu, so we got to try both. As self-described "foodies", we all thought food here was fantastic. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. Huge portions (all of us took some leftovers home) and the view of the harbor from the dining room is a nice touch! While this restaurant is on the pricier side for Nanaimo, it is absolutely not overpriced for the value that you get. I recommend trying the set course Dine About menu if you are able to, which was $55/person for an appie, entrée and dessert. They took special care about my peanut allergy and told me that they currently don't use peanuts in their kitchen. Very reassuring and thoughtful. We came here for our anniversary dinner. They didn't disappoint! I had the Calamari as an appetizer and they were fresh and packed with flavor! The panko crusted Brie was amazing as well! We shared the Dungeness crab & lobster platter. This was very good with the exception of the lobster it was very mushy. The rest of the plate was good. The desserts were both great as well. We've enjoyed a few enjoyable dining experiences at the View. But today wasn't one of them. For Father's Day, my wife and our oldest son visiting from the Mainland surprised me as I was getting breakfast started: "Nope, we have reservations at the View." I didn't object! But regrettably, it was maybe the worst Father's Day brunch I've had. I ordered the Big Breakfast, which would have been excellent had it been prepared properly. Both the bacon and back bacon arrived on the plate cold. The eggs, ordered over easy, were overcooked. The toast--never seen this before!-- wasn't buttered, or more specifically, only one half of the two pieces of diagonally sliced bread was buttered, the other three were not. I had resolved not to complain, just eat, but my wife called the waitress over and mentioned the toast. So I explained. Very surprised was I when the waitress replied in a curt, even bitchy tone: "sir, your toast IS buttered." Well, I said, one piece is, three are not. So she brought me a small serving of melted butter. What the hell was I supposed to do with that? Rather than to deal with her again, I wipe clean my coffee spoon and use it to ladle the liquefied butter onto my toast and spread it around. I ate my cold bacon and back bacon, my overcooked egg, and drank my coffee--which was very good. My wife and son, who paid the tab, left the usual 15% tip. I didn't argue with them about it, but I sure wouldn't have. Just back from date night at The View and it was AMAZING! Everything we had was so fresh and delicious. Started with the prawns gratin and the seafood chowder (best we have ever had!), followed by the halibut with mushroom risotto and bacon wrapped tenderloin (soooo tender!) and ended off with the most delicious raspberry lemon cheesecake! We had the pleasure of being served by the owner, Maddy, and the service was incredible. Definitely our favourite top-end restaurant in Nanaimo! Love the clean and sophisticated ambience our server was very attentitive, friendly and so engaged with his work which enhanced the overall dining experience. We ordered calamari and scallops for appetizers. Calamari was crunchy and fresh. The scallops were paired with a sweet-sourisg mango sauce. Note there are only 3 scallops! Next was the seafood flamblè which the server personally cooked in front of us with a brilliant display of bright flames captivating not only us but patrons from other tables too. Although I did not taste it, the dish was presented with a healthy portion of shellfish and shrimp. I ordered the braised short ribs which was accompanied with mashed potatoes and a slice of squash. The short ribs was extemely tender, almost like the texture of pulled pork. The sauce was thick and savory, albeit i did find it excessive for the portion. Overall the food and service exceeded expectation! It is a must-go if you want an above average dining experience in Central Nanaimo. read more

We happened to "stumble" into this great spot for lunch. We decided to eat upstairs on the patio. The server greeted us quickly. I had a hard time deciding on lunch so he suggested the clam chowder. Mixed feelings. The waiter we had was absolutely lovely- very friendly, professional, and competent. We just had drinks and dessert cutlery and were very impressed with what we ordered. We saw some food dishes come out for other guests and the food looked great. Another staff member sat at the outdoor bar watching some sort of TV show loudly on her phone, which was really inappropriate and unprofessional. The restaurant itself was pretty dirty and definitely didn't have the higher end finishes we were expecting based on the way the view promotes itself. This is one creepy, dated, dysfunctional and over rated restaurant. We ordered the two large lobster platters with crab and prawns at $80 per plate. The lobster was under cooked and tasteless, the crab was over cooked and chewy and disgusting, the prawns were ok if it weren't for the cold lemon butter and the cold garlic butter. (Who the hell does that??) and the vegetables were terrible (excluding the beets which were great). I'm sure the lobster tail was frozen of course. It was so bad. It was laughable and sad really. Waiter never followed up with questions or any inquiries, never brought a bowl for the shells, never replaced a full bowl of shells after we asked for one, never did anything to warrant the price of the meal. The waiter did flambé prawns in sambuca at the table beside us. Hello? The 1970's called, they want their frying pan back. OMG. If you're over the hill, blind, and impressed by flames and ugly dark table cloths and dusty chandeliers hanging from cold empty rooms than this is for you. Great reviews, menu and wine list. Servers were excellent and diningroom elegant. Dinner was presented as vegan without tofu I had ordered. Manager and kitchen tried to make it right but could not. I appreciated kitchen's efforts and that my dinner price was removed and dessert offered. Appetizers great color and flavor. Ceasar and berry salads delicious. Portion size small on calamari. What a disappointment ! No decor or atmosphere. Bare unwelcoming tables for the price of dishes. Old cutlery and a polite however annoying server interrupting conversations several times to ask the same question. My 25.00 meal consisted of a bed of plain rice and a small piece of overcooked and dry salmon on top. No green or sauce to adorn the plate. My husband"s and my salad were soaked in dressing. The chicken he ordered with salad came in a small plate and it was also was dry. This was our worst experience in dining . Boss ! Hire a real chef ! My ten year old would have done better. Brunch on Sunday - VERY DISAPPOINTED - service was slow and quite bad - the server didn't come back to the table for 15 minutes after dropping off our meals or we would have sent them back. Eggs not cooked right - toast was hardly toasted and barely buttered - bacon was so crisp that it snapped off the plate when I tried to cut it - when this was all mentioned to the server when an appearance was finally made, the response was "yeah, the cook is having a bad day".... like that was our fault ????????? This place did not make a good impression on me, there were tables but we still had to wait over 20mins for a table. The restaurant was not even full that day and we were the only ones waiting for a table. Our orders of burgers with garden salad took about an hour to arrive. I was ready to get up and leave!! Made reservations for supper here last night and had an excellent meal . Started off with the flash fried brussel sprouts with the pumpkin purée , these were such a surprise in the taste ( looked burnt ) tasted wonderful and addictive. Then I had the Linguini Capesante and my husband had the Lobster seafood platter , everything was amazing . Loved the spice in mine. If I had any negative it would only be that the management needs to hire more servers so they can give the time so that everyone's dining experience is a plus instead of waiting for the girls to come back . I went for lunch with a friend today. I had not been since the restaurant became the View. We wanted to sit outside on the patio but the only table was in the sun with no umbrella, on a hot day, so we went downstairs. The waiter apologized for being short staffed, gave us our menus and a glass of luke warm water (on a very hot day). He was obviously rushed off his feet, waiting table, taking meals up to the patio, mixing drinks at the bar. We were ready to order but he gestured that he would come back in a few minutes, we said sure. An hour later and he had not come back to take our order. The place was lovely, the food smelled great, we were hungry, but the air conditioning was not working very well so we were hungry and hot. We had had enough, so we left, very disappointing I might add. read more

The food here is horrible. The restaurant is freezing cold and the waitstaff seem all be young student types. This restaurant used to be good, but now apparently it's under different ownership and it's go way down hill. I don't recommend this place at all.
