I've been coming here for the bread for years and it's always been amazing, so there's not much to be said there- some of my favorites have been the taro and pineapple breads. However, I recently noticed that Kamalan had started serving taiyaki with ice cream, albeit during specific hours, which I simply had to try. Unfortunately, I couldn't have been more disappointed. Maybe it was towards the end of the evening, but the taiyaki I ordered was cold and the exterior limp and soft. The scoop of green tea ice cream was very standard and didn't add the expected contrast, given that the taiyaki was cold and soft to begin with. Hands down for this fabulous bakery! Thanks goodness you are here because I visit your shop 3 times a week for breakfast bread and throughout the day snacks . My friend and her kids love the breads as well!! They were all so fresh, soft, and smell super delicious and of course taste is 10/10 . I have tried pretty much 90% of the bread here hehe. They also have their own style of egg custard which are super soft, smooth, and moist, pretty much what you are looking for in an egg custard texture. They also serve taiyaki filled with ice cream. I've been looking for a place that sell this and finally I found this place!! I've tried both with red bean ice cream and matcha green tea ice cream. Down at the bottom of the fishcake you will have either custard or red bean. I ordered custard both times cause I'm not a big fan of red bean and the cake turn out really good! I like it with green tea ice cream much better since you can taste the green tea much more vs red bean ice cream flavor was kinda masked by the fish cake. I will come back frequently! I had a cake done for my nephew's birthday last year and it was great - it was a cars theme cake with red piping and black squares around the edge and we added cake toppers on top. My sister decided to use them again for his birthday again this year, and, unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. She picked up the cake the day before and the girl reassured that it was good to put in the fridge overnight for the party in the morning, but when she took the cake out of the box the squares had all melted and slid down. We were horrified, and the only saving grace was that the cake actually still tasted good per our guests. We texted the baker with pictures and how disappointed we were and no response; shows that the baker does not care. Makes sense since she seemed upset when the girl that took the order made a mistake on the pricing... "sorry I quoted you 65 dollars...but the price is actually 75 dollars...but since you are a repeat costumer....we will give you 10% off so it will be 67 dollars" really....all that fuss for 2 dollars more? Fine. If you were upset about the pricing, don't take it out on a little kids' birthday cake. We are sticking with other bakeries in the area next time for custom cakes. read more

We saw this place when it was under construction and one look at the baked goods rotation menu sold us immediately. We were excited about the place before it even opened. When it finally opened it did not disappoint. Everything there is fresh baked. They have an amazing selection of sweet, savory, light, and decadent buns, breads, cakes, puffs, etc. The prices are slightly below average for an Asian bakery. About $.25-$.50 than other Asian bakeries. This is a Taiwanese bakery, and as such, everything there is good. Their boloù bao (lit. translation=pineapple bun) is on point! Light, airy, not too sweet, just the right amount of flaky coconut crust. FYI there is actually no pineapple in that; the name comes from the pineapple appearance. Anyway, you will definitely find something that will agree with your taste buds here. Can't go wrong with this place. (Unless you are gluten free. Probably one of the best Tiramisu cake I ever ate in my life. There is a lot of competition in Houston for cakes but this place is one of the best. We came on Christmas Eve and they had a 8 inch Tiramisu cake available in under ten minutes. The theme in the cake is so cute and it feels good supporting a local business. We had followed this bakery even when it was just starting off inside of welfresh, which was great! They always made the best cakes, soft and fresh. When it opened its own store it was still great but after a few years it seems to have gone down hill, I think they had a new owner. We had always ordered our kids birthday cakes from here for at least 6 years, since the very last time we ordered we decided it just was not worth the money. The manager or owner stated they can no longer do any sort of designs when previously they have always done designs as long as it was doable with butter cream. The cake was much more dried out and not soft, I requested more fruit and less cream in the middle but they did the complete opposite. The manager or owner also had a terrible attitude, when trying to place the phone order and asking questions he got frustrated and just said we can't make you a cake and hung up. It's unfortunate because we absolutely loved this place but now under new management it's not living up to the expectations as before. We were spending the night in Houston for Memorial day long weekend and on our way back to Austin we stopped by at the bakery to buy some to go (We only have tous le jours in Austin and every other bakeries are lame). Anyway, we absolutely love their buns and cakes! We got the green onion with sausages, sausages and cheese, pork floss and green onion, custard, slices of mango cake and a whole black forest cake. Quality wise, Kamalan definitely takes the cake as opposed to 85 degrees across the street. Although the selection is limited compared to 85, the cakes and bread is way more worth it (also the price lol). My favorites here would have to be the Pandan and regular bread cake that is very similar to a sponge cake. It's very moist and the consistency is perfect as it has a nice little 'spring' to it as it reverts back to it's regular form after I poke it a bit. It's the BEST when they just made some fresh ones and you get it right when it's still warm. Also I have tried their mango cake here and it was really yummy and they have some cakes ready for purchase without calling in ahead. I'm a bigger fan of Asian bakeries as I generally do not like anything too sweet and I would have to say this would be my top pick along with Six Ping. read more
