i am a houston local and i just revisited merryland after a while of not visiting. now it is a staple for me that i must get at least once a week. it's one of the only mom and pop chinese style bakeries left in houston. very wholesome and true. the owners don't speak any english. cash only, no card!! they sell LOTS of their hawaiin style looking dinner rolls. they are fluffy and they sell to the groceries which is how they are still alive. the interior is a bit cluttered, but we go for the bread! they have different options of bread like their bolo (pineapple bun) as well as their cream bread and chocolate hard shell bread. i love their cream bread as it's sweet, but not too sweet, a bit gritty and creamy with a fluffy, chewy bread texture. the chocolate hard shell bread is another one of my favorites, but they only sell it on the weekend. each bread is about 1.50, the cheapest you'll get! i love it, i hope merryland doesn't close down, and as much as i wanted to gatekeep it, everyone deserves to know this hidden gem. -- extra notes from me, the foodie patootie-- bread details: chewy! like a great chew. you get this amazing pull from the bread that makes it fun to eat, and it has a fluffy aspect to it that is uniquely merryland. it's interesting because each of their bread items have a different texture, from the chocolate bread, dinner roll, to the cream bread. read more

One of the old school mom and pop Chinese bakery left here in Houston. They have a variety for sale, but the Hawaiian style roll is what they sell the most. I love how when you walk in you can smell the fresh bread scent. It may be a little bit dark inside and looks a little bit clutter, but the bread are very good. Stopped by Merryland Bakery for dessert after trying Drunken Lobster. They have a great selection of fresh, pre-packaged pastries. We picked out a bunch to share. The friendly older couple running the shop made it a true mom-and-pop spot - love supporting small businesses! The bakery has an old-school Asian bakery vibe. Merryland Bakery 美而廉 says it all. The Chinese name says "tasty and inexpensive". The breads are solid. It reminds me of Olympic Chinese Bakery, which closed over 5 years ago. The dough is bouncier than 85C because it's made locally. I don't know much about baking but I know a little bit about locally sourced dough and the flour they used. I have been searching for breads with high glutinous content. It fills up faster. With the cost of these breads, I could save a lot more versus eating Six Ping or other puffy breads. Another interesting observation, the shelves are made with plywood and plastic cover with a light in each case. They looked pretty fresh. I peeked at the kitchen. The staff seems busy working on the next batch. I will be back in a couple of weeks to check out their noon cakes selection. read more

Small bakery in the same plaza as Tony Moly and Crown Seafood. They have a bunch of baked goods and it smells like heaven in there. Also a small seating area if you want to drink coffee, read the Chinese newspaper, and eat your buns there. While the buns are reasonably priced it's hit or miss on what you get. I tried the hot dog buns, which is a personal favorite and found them lacking in flavor. The bun is soft but has little to no taste. The pork sung buns are good but need more pork sung in my opinion. read more

I first heard about this bakery while shopping at Tim's supermarket in San Antonio. First off, I prefer this bakery over Six Ping and 99 ranch. This bakery is significantly cheaper than either of those stores. Because it's so cheap, I bought more buns can I could eat the first time I went. One bun/bread usually averages to $1. Their cake rolls are $6 and are cheaper and tastier than Six Ping and 99 Ranch. Secondly, since I have had an opportunity to try most of their buns, I can honestly say all of their bread and cakes taste better than most Chinese bakeries in Houston and Sugar land. Their breads and cakes are much more moist and fluffy. I tend to find that Six Ping and 99 Ranch cakes to run a bit dry and flavorless. Their tiger rolls and sponge cakes are AMAZING. Definitely my favorite thing to get here. If you like cheap baked goods for superior quality, I can't recommend this place enough. read more

Dinner rolls!!!!! If you're a fan of Hawaiian dinner rolls, Merryland has your substitute and at a far cheaper price. I originally found Merryland rolls at an HEB and I've been a fan ever since. Their rolls are even bigger than the King's Hawaiian rolls. I needed about 500 rolls and if I had bought the King's from Sam's Club, it would've cost me about $180. Here, it cost me about $67. So, Merryland is my go-to bakery for dinner rolls. The pastries aren't so bad either - I had their red bean and butter cream rolls and they were pretty tasty and many for less than a $1. The interior isn't all that grand, but you're just picking up bread, so who cares? read more

This place has been a Houston staple since I was a child. And the baked goods still taste the same! I went again recently to pick up some baked goods for a get together. The taste is homey and very generous in terms of filling, especially compared to many of the newer places that have opened in the past 5 years. Forget the other posh, newer bakeries, and ridiculously long lines! This place had the nicest old ladies! There was so much variety and everything chose was so moist and delicious. The items that we thought might be a little sweet, but was actually just right. The fluffy baked goods were really fluffy and light, and super tasty and moist. If you're looking for fancy decor and a nice place to sit and enjoy your bread, this place is not it. If you're looking for your Chinese bread with a ton of grease and sugar, this place is not it, either. This bakery has been in that location for a LONG time (over 30 years). I mostly go in there to grab some bread for a quick breakfast. I like their "sweet" breads with a variety of fillings - milk sung, taro, red beans, green tea, and coconut on top. The savory breads are decent but I feel that they don't put enough pork sung or green onions. If you go after 6PM on the weekdays or 5:00PM on the weekends, most of their breads are only $0.70. I absolutely love the taro and pudding cake with fruit on top. It's not overly sweet or indulgent; rather, it's wonderfully light and airy. The taro is creamy and chunky, which indicates they do use real taro, and they don't skimp out on ingredients. The variety of textures in the cake work well together and provide a good change of pace. I never get tired of eating it! Their breads are also delicious. My favorite sweet breads are the taro and red bean. My favorite savory breads are the pork sung puffy bread (looks like a square on top), pork sung with custard (looks like a football), and the hot dog bread. Again, they don't skimp out on ingredients. Each bread comes well stuffed! You won't get mouthfuls of just plain bread like you do with the bread at other bakeries. This bakery has been around for forever, and my family has always bought bread and cakes from them. It's a very small locally owned shop. I've only ever seen the owner and his mother running the front, and they're both very nice; however, English is not their first language (keep that in mind). I've been to other newer bakeries, but Merryland is still one of my top choices. They seem to have held the same level of quality since the beginning, and their prices are always low. Merryland Bakery has a very distinctive, but misleading name. I would typically say that Asian bakeries need to have extremely generic names to simply be understood to be bread-making machines from the Far East. Ex. Baking House, Baking and Bread, ABC Bread. Anyway, with my keen Asian sense, I just knew that Merryland boasted that generic, highly processed-ingredient oily bread that is so loved by my family, which happens to hail from the land o' Taiwan. What is so good about these goods that even advertise their (nearly) disgusting ingredients? Price. 3 pieces of bread. $2.65. Wowzers. At more than 300 calories a piece, you could eat a whole days calories for something like... $4.50. And it would all be sweet, oily, and starchy. Welcome to the world of Chinese-style bakeries. There are several hidden gems mom n pop shops in this plaza, and this little Taiwanese bakery shop is one of them. The variety of bread is not huge, but enough to cover the Taiwanese essentials such as Taro bread, dry shredded pork bread, fresh pineapple cake, green tea red bean bread, pineapple bread with sweet custard, coconut Danish pastries...etc. Quality is comparable to the little local bakery store on the home street corner back in Taiwan. Nothing fancy or corporate, but they hit the spot. People are warm, welcoming and very friendly here. Most items cost a buck each. I will stop by again. read more

Even though you can find most of their breads and buns sold at stores in the Bellaire area like Viet Hoa, it is still fun to visit the actual bakery and get first and fresh dibs on everything they have to offer! The dinner rolls are cheap and delicious, with that hint of sweetness to it. Their buns are full of filling inside, not skimpy like dim sum buns. For example, the red bean bun is cheap and you get red bean paste in every bite! I also recommend the green tea bun, taro bun, and custard bun. Just walk in, grab a tray, and start piling it on! They also sell those little pineapple cakes that remind me of Fig Newtons by the counter. Those seem to be popular, not my fave, but pointing it out cause I know alot of folks that like it. A bread (most at $.085) and a cup of hot tea or coffee would be my ideal and filling breakfast. Hubby would eat them as snack. + Good variety + Fresh Cakes Good: + spongy and light cake, not heavy and dense like the American version. + they have a few smaller size ones that you can walk-in and grab for last minute party. I bought their custard bread at a local market, and I took one bite and both the custard filling and bread tasted fermented as though it were moldy. Love this place!!! I have recently started to visit bakeries in bellaire and I was looking for the perfect one. I stumbled upon merryland bakery and I am so glad I did!! When we first walked in, it wasn't the greatest looking bakery, and it was completely empty. Only person was elderly lady cashier. I picked 3 bread flavors, Mung bean, coconut, and 3 combination and all said 1$ each. They were so good!! The bread is soft and sweet and it is actually filled with filling, not barely stuffed. Second time I went, I picked 6 breads , and according to label, $1 each. But when we rang up the price for 6 loaves, it was only $3.60!!! For 6 DELICIOUS SWEET STUFFED BREADS!! Amazing. Really good and fresh bread. It's in the old plaza across from Kim Son buffet and Yogurt Spot. The location looks nasty but go in, try the bread! They have all the things you would probably want: sponge cakes, cakes, dinner rolls, bread loaves, bread with red bean, green bean, mung bean, butter cream, raisin, corn and ham, hot dog, taro, green onion, "pineapple", coconut cream, etc. Most breads are $0.85 each, which I think is cheaper than many other fancy bakeries in Chinatown. read more

I tried the green tea red bean bun. Pretty tasty and very different from what you can get elsewhere in Chinatown. The bun is actually made up of green tea which goes well with red bean. The red bean paste is more plentiful than other bakeries and isn't too sweet. The bun was pretty huge and didn't look too greasy like the other places. I think most of their buns are larger than their competitors and have more filling inside. Ambience is boring but it's suppose to be that way. It's not a social hangout place. read more

I spent two hours finding this place again because it was so fabulous. Cakes are wonderful bread is incredible. A lot of the other places have fancy trappings cute tables and lots of showcases .not only is the products they produce better, The owners are happy warm and friendly , that is more than I can say about a lot of the places in that area , I am not of Asian descent and they do not always treat me very nicely.
