What a fun chocolate tour located on the North Shore. I actually had never heard of this local cacao farm, but my husband found it as an activity to do when his parents were visiting from the mainland. You can sign up online for the tour, which includes seeing the cacao trees, and how they grow the different types of cacao, harvest it, process it, and turn it into a local chocolate for Manoa chocolate company. It's actually very fascinating, but quite a long process, which is why most chocolate companies don't make their chocolate from scratch. As we drove up to this property the road looked a little sketchy. You need a code to get into the gate. We kept driving and driving up the road and seen some beautiful views of the island. As we walked up to the Cacao farm we were greeted by a young lady with a beautiful smile. I think her name was Katey. She was very informative and made our tour unforgettable. At the end we got to try different types of chocolate, they also had a tea we got to taste. It was fun and very informative. I recommend trying this place out. We had a wonderful time. I went with a group to tour the orchard, learn about one of my favorite foods, and do some "malama 'aina." Chari and Max began the tour teaching us about their wind fire breaks (trees) as we approached an intricately carved set of doors from Bali depicting a woman who turned a man into a monkey. In the tour we learned so much about the entire seed-to-bar process, from propogation to harvesting to fermentation to manufacturing. They were such awesome guides. We sampled some varieties of cacao beans as well as ice cream beans along the way. After helping to weed their fruit tree area (in which there were so MANY mosquitoes!), we were treated to some samples of cacao syrup, cacao wine, and various chocolate bars . So delicious! They had a special offer of buy 6 get one free so my friend her 7 chocolate bars and then some! Very enjoyable experience. One I wouldn't mind repeating! read more

We took the tour while hosting guests from Pennsylvania. None of us had ever visited a cacao orchard. I had been on the factory tour in Manoa, but this was even better. We all agreed that we couldn't imagine a better tour guide than Katie. She knew everything there is to know about the orchard, including its history, the role and background of each person working there and the company's partners in the chocolate business. She knew each type of flora, how it grew and why it was there. She explained the processes from planting to cultivating to harvesting and every step from the tree to the chocolate you see in stores. At the end is the tasting. We sat around a counter while she brought a small square of each of their products, washing it down with a cup of their cacao tea. I highly recommend checking it out. Very cool experience. Learned a lot about the process of harvesting cocoa and making chocolate. Got to eat a lot of fun and interesting things like Ice Cream Beans, cocoa plants, cocoa juice, freshly dried coffee beans and of course, lots of chocolate. Max was one of our tour guides and his Masters of a Agriculture was abundantly on show every time he spoke. Chari was also very well informed, and gave us a great tour. Everyone in the group had interesting questions and I'm really glad we made the trip. The property was beautiful as well, so cool to see everything. Dan the "ag guy" was with us and explained the work the company did to the land to prepare it for growing cacao as well as the different breeds of cacao.
