I consider myself a connoisseur of sushi and Japanese foods and my opinion is that Kame is fantastic. The sushi was fresh, expertly crafted and plated, as were all the other dishes my girlfriend and I ordered. The atmosphere was very nice. We sat in the alcove for traditional floor sitting on the zabuton, although the design on the cushions is Korean, not Japanese, lol. It was wonderful to be served by the waitress in traditional Japanese seiza. The wait staff were wonderful, very friendly and professional. I loved the art work on the walls. The entire experience was 100% amazing and can't wait to go again. I love this place. I highly recommend Kame, OH, and if it matters, they are LGBT friendly. read more

I have eaten here since they opened. At least once or twice a week. Thye have an excellent lunch special for $16.00.. Bento box, miso, soup . Very tasty. Bo and his wife Lilly have made this a family restaurant. There is no "hip decor" with bars, low lights and a pick-up scene. Kame is a throwback Japanese simple model; EXECELLENT FOOD and great service. The waitresses are all family members and the sushi chefs are masters. Kame was a large loyal following, because their sushi is , frankly, some of the best I have ever had. FRESH is the the key. Their fatty salmon is to die for. Enjoy the rolls, and get to know Bo and Lilly. They have an amazing stories...and a few that will make you realize just how lucky we all are... If you are from the North Shore, you probably think this is the best sushi restaurant. I read some of the Kame reviews and I can see that they never had good sushi before. Of course when you are stuck in North Shore and you need some Asianness, this is one of the few places available to start with so you have no choice. On top of that, if you are craving for sushi, you are running out of options so you end up going to Kame. So I forgive you all for writing good reviews. Kame is a bit pricy (compared to their quality) but the food isn't terrible. It's edible. Their starter's salad is good and all of their Udongs are average. Their rolls and sashimi are slightly above average and having this kind of Japanese restaurant in Beverly, I give you high remarks. But if you truly want to compare KAME's food, go to Brookline and try Fugakyu and then REWRITE your review on KAME. Then your 5 star will turn into a 3 star, your 4 star will turn into a 3 star, your 3 star will either stay the same or turn into a 2 star and possibly, if I were to go now and eat their sushi after spending 1.5 months in South Korea eating fresh sushi, my 3 star will turn into a 2 star. But KAME, it's ok. I won't go there anytime soon so take it easy. read more

I've been eating sushi/sashimi for almost 24 years. I was eating it before it was a "cool" thing to do. That doesn't mean I'm an expert. It just means that I know what I like. When Kame first opened up, I was leery because I was just never comfortable trusting any Japanese restaurants outside of Boston. I figured if a restaurant wasn't good in Boston, it'd be out of business soon enough, but what the heck did the Yuppies on the North Shore know about evaluating Japanese food? Well, Kame makes the grade. Like another reviewer, I recognized one of the sushi chef's from his days at Asahi, in Salem, so I knew he was very experienced. And I tend to order sushi/sashimi, only venturing into other dishes every so often, because I not only love it but raw fish is very healthy form of protein. The miso, the salad, all consistently fresh and tasty meal openers. I often get the seaweed salad and it's very fresh and seasoned just right. If you never had it, you should try it. It's hard to explain what it's like munching down strands of slightly chewy/crunchy kelp but it's very flavorful and super-healthy for you. I usually get take out but the times I've taken a date here, the service was very pleasant and efficient. The seafood has always been fresh and the sushi deluxe has always been consistently mouth-watering. If you're looking for a new suggestion, I recommend the "Spider Maki" -- it's not a real spider, it's a "soft shell crab, tempura roll." If you've never had soft-shell crab, I hope you try it at least once. It can take you a couple of times to acquire a taste for this roll and its unique texture but, I assure you, once you do, it is a very delightful experience and an interesting selection to introduce to others, as well. I really enjoy Kame and I believe anyone who really enjoys Japanese cuisine will, too. ps. Kame, yum. I agree with previous reviewers that the decor and atmosphere are definitely dull - a teachers' cafeteria lounge comes to mind... but seriously, for the price and the food you get for that price, I really could care less! I have come here a few times for lunch and for dinner (but be careful with the hours - I showed up at 4:30pm once and it was closed until dinner at 5pm!) and each time it has been a delight. If you aren't into sushi, the tempura options are a nice caloric splurge, and any kind of chicken is delicious and far from the mystery meat you might get at other "affordable" Asian restaurants. If sushi is your thing, then Kame is your new favorite pitstop. I enjoy it for a causal lunch or dinner with friends or family and I have had NO issues with the service. Yes, the staff can sometimes be hard to understand but they will do their best to communicate effectively and for the most part they do a fine job. As far as the meal - you order your sushi (with white or brown rice) on a slip of paper with about fifty different rolls. Cost-wise, you can expect to pick up almost any two rolls for under $12. Not only that, but they all come with a delicious miso soup and a small salad with ginger dressing that makes you want to lick the bowl. The service is on the better side of "what you'd expect" -- water glasses refilled promptly, empty dishes removed quickly, and food prepared quickly but well and brought out fresh and/or hot. The staff is pleasant when you arrive and thanks you when you leave. No bar here but sake is an option -- not a big deal, it's not the kind of place you'd want to sit and have a few mai tai's anyway (and I don't mean that in a bad way, it just is a little too cafeteria-feeling for that). Don't bother searching yelp for other sushi options in the Beverly-Salem area -- you'll be disappointed. Try Kame! read more

GF and I went tonight. Place was busy. Service was a little strange. We ordered drinks and a chicken wing app. Drinks came and we ordered mains. I ordered sushi and GF ordered chicken Katsu. Next came the sides soup and salad for the meals. Then the wings. Then one or the mains. Sushi wasn't ready for another 10 min. Very scattered and uneven. Sushi was good. Wings werent very good. Kame is my second-favorite sushi place in the area, after Asahi in Salem, but that's only because Asahi is closer and I've been going there longer. But Kame is just as good, which makes sense since the owner used to be a chef at Asahi before opening his own place. All the standard fare is there and prepared as you'd expect. My favorite is the spicy tuna maki and I use that as a quick gauge of a sushi and they meet the grade. The spice is just right and doesn't overwhelm the tuna. We had an udon and tempura shrimp dish which our 15-month-old liked (at least the noodles themselves.) We had the spicy tuna, negihama maki, magura sushi, and avocado rolls. Some edamame and miso soup rounded out the feast. With all that plus a beer for me, it was only about $45. That's a bargain by sushi standards. Matched with the quality of the food it was outstanding. Oh, so why only four stars? Well, there was this place I went to in San Francisco a couple of years ago. That was five stars. Someone else will need to measure up to that standard to get five from me again. read more

I sit at the sushi bar every time I go. That makes me a regular. I order the same thing. Hot Sake two toro two salmon two abalone two egg two tuna and if I'm really hungry I add: nabeyaki udon and clam soup and one more bottle of Hot Sake. I used to go once a month. shell out around hundred bucks. so they know me................................... which i don't like. i like to be anonymous. but they always say things like "hey you are back" which makes me uncomfortable and disappear for months. yes, i'm a weirdo. And then when I come back they say again"hey long time" hahahha. so i've been gone for some months again until last week. I was full, and I ordered half of what I usually order, and they said" that's it???" dude. i can never go back again. they know me too well. but since u guys aren't weirdos like me, my conclusion for you: they sushi chefs are all thai but they are excellent. the sushi is very good(i've had alot of excellent sushi thanks to my doctor sister who is a sushi snob) the nabeyaki udon is mediocre, but not bad. the hot sake is great. the wait staff are always friendly. and there really is no other place nearby that can compete. this weirdo commutes back and forth from NY to boston so I can deal with it. but for all you native north shore residents: this is your place mang. read more

the restaurant was a good size. they even had some floor seating (with the hole in the middle). the decor was just average. they seem to keep it well kept. they have a sushi bar with one flat screen. we had the tempura udon, bomb maki, and irish maki. they all tasted good except the bomb was so big it was a little uncomfortable to eat. the salad comes with a pretty good dressing. the food was presented well. our waitress with friendly and helpful and the host was nice as well. the workers generally seemed pretty nice. only thing i didn't like were the high prices compared with boston or similar. the maki was about $2-4 more and i also remember the teriyaki stuff was $15-18, which also is a couple of dollars more. i guess since it's beverly they can do that. overall it was a nice experience. read more

Picked up food from here a number of times now. We've always been happy with it. Coming from Boston, it's been disappointing the lack of sushi options out here, but this place is really good. We always share a seaweed salad and Hawaiian salad (has seaweed salad in it w other stuff). We then also share a few rolls. We've have rainbow rolls, spicy tuna, Uni avo, Bo special, and others. Still on my sushi kick and with Kame so conveniently close to my home, the ladyfriend and I met up with a couple of friends to house as much sushi as I could manage. This is a breath of fresh air in downtown Bev. Normally, I associate most of these places with their own twists on pub food and bar decor that mostly cater to the nighttime crowd. Obviously not the case here, they don't pull a Fresh Taste of Asia and turn the place into a dance club on the weekend. I'm still a novice, so if you asked me what I ordered I'd probably have to call up the woman and have her tell me. Ummm, I ate a lot of eel...salmon...some avocado...and uhhh...oh, the Philly Roll was amazing. That part I surely remember. Service was excellent, attentive, but not always in your way or too eager to take things away from your table. Again, beer was limited, but Asahi and Kirin do me fine. Prices were a bit up there. NASA is still calculating the tab for the four of us. I'm fine with that, I expect to pay more for sushi. I also noticed there was a section where you could sit down with a lowered table. Not sure if there is a term for this (again, I'm a novice), but the fact this was there was so cool to me. However, I'm far too big to be attempting that nonsense. Eh, Kame is ok. (Please note that I have only had sushi here and have not tried any other menu items) The quality of sushi is pretty good and the variety offered as well. Unfortunately, compared to many other places the flavors seem relatively bland. Also, the rolls are done very loosely and cut very large which makes it difficult to eat. They either fall apart because they aren't rolled tightly or you have to attempt to bite each piece because it is too big to eat in one bite. For anyone that has tried to bite through that seaweed exterior knows it isn't pretty. Another complaint is that the prices are fairly high compared to many of the other sushi places I frequent. I'd eat here again but probably only because it is the closest sushi place to me. read more

Last night was my first visit to Kame, and I'm happy to say that I will definitely be going again. Since I've only started eating sushi in the last year or so, I'm pretty new to the game. Having moved to this area just after falling in love with sushi, I've tried the Tokyo Steakhouse (take-out) and Sea Lion Sushi, so my experience inside a sushi restaurant is very limited. I love spicy tuna rolls and Kame did not disappoint. I decided to take a leap of faith and go with brown rice instead of white. It was great! I think the brown rice actually brought out more of the nutty flavor that the sesame seeds provide, while not being over the top. We also tried the rainbow roll and the irish roll. The latter being absolutely out of this world. I have developed an affinity for wasabi and this roll is coated in tobiko and wasabi! Don't get me wrong, the rainbow roll was good, but it was definitely overshadowed by the irish. I also had the garlic noodles for an appetizer and they were delicious. Our waitress was very nice and we had no problem getting a table, though we went in around 8:30 p.m. and it was close to full. They have a section of tables where it seems as though diners are sitting on the floor instead of at tables, but there is actually a section below the tables that are cut into the floor to allow for normal (Western) at-table seating. read more

I've been going to Kame for over 10 years. For those of you who say there is no other Japanese restaraunt in the north shore, open your eyes, there are many. Kame consistently in the early years would have rated 5 stars. Service was great as was the food. In the last 2 years since I've moved to Beverly the food has gone downhill. They are only getting 3 stars due to memories past. In my last few visits the sushi has been warm, rice in the roll was actually hot, and the fish tasted off. The nabeyaki udon was not so great. On my last visit I ordered the udon noodles, a special, out of curiosity. Its something I normally love at every restaurant I get them. These sauteed noodles were coated in KETCHUP and SOY SAUCE. Sliced red cabbage supposedly sauteed with the noodles was hard and crispy. It was disgusting. The surly waitress did not make notice that we (I had convinced my partner to get the same meal) had not eaten more than 3 or 4 bites of our meal. She did not ask why we didn't want the meal packaged to go when we answered her curt "Would you like box" with a resounding and chorused "NO!" I'll give them another chance as they have been one of my favorite sushi places for a long time, but I'll wait another year or so before I go back. read more

For suburban sushi, this place is okay. If you're close by and your objective is not to drive very far, this place is fine. The prices are moderate and they have a good selection of your standard maki rolls, but don't expect unique or adventurous signature rolls. The quality of the fish and seafood is also hit or miss but thankfully more hit than miss, though on some occasions the eel and tuna in particular smelled anything but fresh. It's less noticible in a maki roll, but not appealing at all as sashimi. That said, though it is a bit of a drive Sushi Island in Wakefield is vastly better. They have a more interesting menu including some more authentic fare. You're still not going to see some of the more adventurous signature rolls featured in the city, but the quality of the fish is MUCH better and more consistent. read more

I went to Kame for the first time, last Saturday evening, with a couple of friends. We reserved one of the "irori" style tables where you have to take off your shoes and step up onto plastic "tatami" and sit on zabuton (cushions) on the floor with your feet dangling down into a void under your table. Well, they dangle if you're short -- and there were a lot of families with little kids with short legs. But our feet actually did make it to the floor, when we weren't sitting cross-legged on our zabuton.. We were there for sushi, and we were not disappointed. Starting with a small salad dressed with a tasty ginger dressing (the salad itself was boring with pale iceberg lettuce... why, oh why must restaurants persist with nutrientless iceberg???), we picked out nagiri sushi of unagi (smoked eel) with avocado, yellowfin tuna maki, the rainbow rolls and a seven-piece triangle roll that was so delicious that we ordered another. We shared two bottles of warmed sake, and after the first two sake-cupfuls our faces were flushed and ANYTHING would have tasted good, even day-old tuna salad! But the sushi was fresh as can be, well prepared and tasty. Service was good despite the place being 80% full and busy, and our check came out to $27 per person including a 20% tip. I miss Asahi, which graced Salem for years, but Kame is a fine replacement and not much farther to travel from where I live in South Salem. On a calm evening it only takes 15 minutes. read more

We just ate at Kame for the first time after moving to Beverly. We went with our kids for dinner and the food was fine and average for local but it was one of the worst service experiences we have had in years at a restaurant that made the meal very unpleasant. They charge for spicy mayonnaise $1.50 for one squirt and $2.50 for cucumbers added to a roll without asking to a basic California roll. One California roll ended up costing $9.95, and when we asked why it was so much extra they added another $9 to the bill. The owner came over and both the owner and the waitress were rude and unaccommodating, when we just kindly asked why. They also said they knew they were adding even more to our already high bill and don't care if we never come back. None of us would ever eat at Kame again and it is a shame since we live so close! If you want to spend money to go out for a good meal do not waste your money where nobody appreciates your business or values you! STAY AWAY read more

Kame is one of our family favorites. My all-time favorite is the chirashizushi which, as good sushi restaurants, changes subtly with the seasons to reflect the appropriate combinations for the time of year. The fact that my parents, both Japanese, loved it as well, speaks volumes to the quality of their food. Their service is awesome and it has a true neighborhood feel. read more

Very good sushi, especially for the North Shore. I have been a fan for years, and I'm finally writing them a review. The fish is always very good, from the standard spicy tuna rolls and salmon sashimi to their slightly more unique creations like the Tootsie Roll with shrimp tempura. Kame doesn't have quite the selection of exotic rolls you might think you want (nothing torched, for example), but honestly, the reason I go for sushi is the quality of the fish and how well they prepare it. And the steamed shu mai, of course. I've never had a bad order, almost always take-out. It's more expensive than pizza, but not any more than most sushi places. I finally tried Kame after reading raves about it on Facebook as "best on the North Shore". I love maki mono, so I ordered three rolls: spicy tuna, Lobster maki and New England Maki. I was so disappointed. I couldn't taste the fish in any of them, either the mayo or the wasabi totally overpowered the flavor of the fish. The lobster was tough and chewy, the tuna was mushy. Each roll fell apart on the chopsticks, like they had no will to live. I've eaten at Morimoto, Nobu and Oishii, which are far, far better than this, but locally, I think Opus and Hale Street have much better prepared and fresher-seeming sushi that isn't chewy or mushy and stands on its own. read more

This place was once good but has gone downhill. We ordered takeout today, some sushi and avocado salad. The sushi was not presentable. It was falling apart. The eel still had bones in it.
