I ended up ordering sushi from here through DoorDash late one night and honestly wasn't expecting anything amazing. I was pleasantly surprised--it was probably some of the best sushi I've ever had! I can only say this based on a to-go order. I was excited that they had vegetable tempura. The selection of the vegetables was great and you could kind of customize it. I went to Maki Sushi Bar and Grill on 43 Main St, Peabody, MA. This north shore spot features a great selection of sushi rolls and cocktails. For drinks we had their pineapple passion and mai tai. Both will satisfy your sweet tastebuds on a night out with friends or family. For food we got the sushi pizza, the sunset roll, firecracker roll, hurricane roll, and crab rangoon roll. My personal favorites were the sunset roll which had avocado, salmon, lemon, and kanikama salad. Also, the crab rangoon roll which had tempura kanikama, cream cheese, masago, avocado, and cucumber with spicy mayo. All the sushi was so addicting and I could not stop eating! For dessert we had the molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberries. To say we were stuffed at the end of the evening was an understatement. Even after years of coming here, this place keeps it consistent with delicious sushi. My family's go to sushi is always sushi pizza, sunset and jalapeno maki. Although I moved, everytime I am in the area and craving sushi, I come here. If you order extra sauce, etc. Just make sure you check the bag before leaving. My sister loves the spicy mayo here and paid extra for a side of it, when we got home, it wasn't in the bag. She had to make to her own. read more

I have somehow lived in Peabody for over a decade and never went to Maki. I think the difficulty of parking downtown on the weekend evenings has dissuaded me in the past but Maki was well worth the trip. The sushi selection was huge and everything we ordered was very fresh. The service was a little slow but only because it was one server for 5-10 tables plus seemingly the bar area. The bill was ridiculous in that it was such a good value, for quality and quantity of sushi. I think my only complaint is that I didn't go with a larger party so we could have have ordered and tried more dishes. read more

Update, Went and sat down at 9:30 and they sat us it is not 10:22 and they just told us they will not serve us any food. They waited almost an hour and REFUSED TO SERVE US. Unacceptable and furious. I have loved this restaurant for almost 4 years and this is how they treat there customers. After talking to management they did como our drinks and the manager promised to como our next meal but still over all a frustrating experience when brining a friend to try for the first time. I will give it still 3 starts for the manager recovery and it's still such good sushi. read more

John Nguyen is a Peabody native sushi chef. With dedication and hard work, Nguyen climbed the ranks from being a sushi helper to head chef of a restaurant. He decided to follow his passion and open his own restaurant, Maki Sushi Bar & Grill, in 2010. Since it's opening it has won Bons Best of Northshore and has been featured in magazines and on television specials. He comes from a fishing family so preparing delicious seafood is second nature for him. He has lived all around the country and has been perfecting his craft since he was young. His creativity shines through his hand crafted rolls and tantalizing monthly specials. He's racked up 17 years of experience and it shows as he continuously improves. His instagram worthy sushi dazzles customers on the daily. His favorite part about his job is seeing the pure joy on the customers faces when they take a bite of the food.

The dining room has a nice vibe -- modern, clean, and comfortable. It feels like a good spot for a casual date or catching up with friends. That said, the noise level builds quickly. Everyone was chatting, and you could easily overhear conversations without even trying. Service was genuinely great. Our server checked in consistently for water refills, cleared plates quickly, and asked if we needed anything -- but never felt overbearing. That balance is appreciated and made the experience smoother. One thing worth noting: some menu prices are higher than you might expect, especially since Google lists the average around $20-$30 per person. For some of the higher-priced items, photos on the menu would really help set expectations. The portions do help justify the entrée pricing somewhat, but the overall bill -- $110 for a late lunch for two -- was honestly higher than expected. We started with the spicy edamame. To make it spicy was a $2 upcharge, which felt unnecessary -- most places offer regular, sea salt, or spicy at the base price. That rubbed me the wrong way. For sushi, we ordered two pieces of unagi and two pieces of wagyu. The fish/meat to rice ratio was generous (see picture). The unagi sushi is something a sushi chef can't really mess up -- solid and as expected. The wagyu sushi, however, had a very intense char on top and was extremely fatty. Depending on your preference, that could be a plus or a bit overpowering. The spicy beef rice bowl was a very large portion -- honestly enough to split between two people. The onions had a nice crunch and weren't soggy, which I appreciated. The beef is shaved rather than sliced, and you can't choose how it's cooked. The spice level was faint, should have spice level indicators on items like this. I did feel like the dish was missing another vegetable element that could have elevated it. The chicken curry bento box came with a lot: two tempura shrimp, two deep-fried pork gyoza, one sweet potato tempura, sticky rice, and the curry chicken. The chicken was very tender. The curry had that strong, classic curry aroma and was well balanced in flavor. Nothing to rave about. Both meals came with miso soup and salad. The salad dressing wasn't for me; I prefer something tangy, and this one tasted more like pan juices from cooked meat. For dessert, we tried the vanilla crepe cake. It honestly tasted like tiramisu. If they offered a matcha version, that might have set it apart more. I wouldn't order it again. Overall, I'm glad we tried it and had the experience. The service and portion sizes stood out positively. However, for the price point, it's not a "must-return" spot for me, and not somewhere I'd immediately recommend off the top of my head when people ask.

They have a sushi roll special: when you buy two, you get one free. Very nice rolls. The highlight was the Chinese dishes. Their chicken with cashew nuts was flavorful and had fresh vegetables. Their sky pork fried rice was a work of art, including spare ribs. I would drive back to this place for this rice alone. Our server was very attentive and checked on us often. Then Steve stopped by and engaged us in conversation and made us feel like distinguished guests. He then asked us if we had tried their Japanese crab rangoon, and we said we hadn't. He responded that he was going to provide us a complimentary sample. It was a very unique dish, and we will be coming back for more. At the end of our meal, they also provided a warm towel. So I went out for sushi with my girls Tamara and Grace we chose maki sushi tonight. Tammy spent the day moving her stuff into her new man's place. She was irritable to be sure. "This man played Xbox the whole time. He was all smiles at first, saying lemme know if you need any help. But when I asked him for help bringing my clothes in, he said he's in the lobby for the next round, can it wait? I'm like, no it can't wait. I'm parked on street. If the guy with the tan Honda needs to move his car, I'll have to drive around the block. He's lucky I didn't lobby my things at him!" Our server came over. I ordered the edaname and shrimp tempura roll. "You had to move everything in yourself?" "YES. What's worse, when I was putting my clothes away, I found a woman's tank at the back of our dresser." "No." "Yes. I didn't even bother to ask if it was his ex's. Probably wasn't, when I think about how he met me. But some girl's shirt was bunched up in the furniture of my bedroom." "What'd you do with it?" inquired Grace between sips of her club soda with lime. "I was gonna hold onto it, in case he starts acting suspicious. Then I can pull it out like Exhibit A and ask him how it got there. But I didn't want him to find her shirt hiding in my stuff, so I threw it in his gym bag." "Why? Won't that remind him of her?" "No. It's not random, but it's something he won't know. I don't know if I should try to catch him messing with my phone, or just leave it be. Either way, I'm losing respect for him." "Mm," Tamara hummed, eating her avocado salad with ginger dressing, "Not much to begin with." "Don't start." I bit down on another soy bean, felt the pop, then the pull. It was then that our server brought out our sushi. I don't know what those girls ordered. "I love the sauces, and how it's crispy on the outside." "How about your's, Grace?" "It's my favorite roll, anywhere." I ate a piece of my shrimp tempura roll. I saw the cross section of the other pieces on my plate. The lightly fried shrimp, full of protein. The crab from the cool, clear waters at the bottom of the ocean. Cream cheese, smooth and heavy in contrast with the lightly battered tempura shrimp. Buttery avocado. Pure balance. How balanced would the cross section of my own life be? So many times I'd been cut to pieces and I never bothered to take a look. Tammy was all sauce. Making drama where there wasn't any. And Grace was all filler, trying to have her sushi and eat it, too. It seemed so unreal. Their problems. But what was real was the zest of my pickled ginger. The wasabi mixed in with my soy sauce. I have probably the most cultured dining experiences out of everyone on this app. There's a Parisian guy around here but he probably doesn't even tip. When I pull up literally any sushi bar I go, people know it. My Diners' Club card has 500 discounts available and you best bet I use ALL of it EVERYWHERE I go. Pull up to local teriyaki grill? Order martini, appetizers, entrée, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth round. Pull up to the local sushi bar? Order martini, appetizers, entrée, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth round. I walk in, sit down, and everyone looks. People I have never seen before in my LIFE come up to me. "Hey man, is that a California ro-" I immediately cut them off - "it's hamachi sashimi". I'm the only guy on this app man enough to eat premium cuts of raw fish every day. Imagine pulling up to this classy restaurant in vibrant downtown Peabody and only ordering a basic California roll lmao. You spend so much of your life eating I can not imagine how mundane that portion of your life is. Anyways, first impressions are important. I don't have to maintain eye contact let alone speak to someone for them to realize I'm top of the food chain. First they hear, then they see my order, and then they see me and it's like I'm a celebrity. I guess if I was some boring shy guy like the rest of you, you might as well order chicken wings. MAKI IS MY FAVORITE I've been going to Maggie for just about a year now and I love it. I'm a huge sushi fan but when I love specifically about their sushi is it's unique and fresh always fresh. They have some funky names but if you bear with the names and look into the sushi you will be amazed my favorite is the sunset roll, crab Ragu and roll, and beauty and the beast roll. It's a great place to go with friends or to go on a dinner date it's quite small but can definitely fit about 30 people and they have a bar. The waitstaff is always nice I've only ever had a couple of servers specifically the gentleman who works there I'm unsure of his name but he always has great recommendations and brings my boyfriend two glasses of water which he definitely needs because he goes through water like nobody's business. I like their sushi so much that even though I have two sushi places in the city that I live in I'll often drive to Peabody in order to get it as take out. We heard great things about Maki and finally gave it a try. Probably some of the best sushi we ever had. And I have eaten at countless sushi restaurants. Certainly a hidden gem in downtown Peabody. A good start with spicy edamame. I'm in love with the sunset roll here. Thinly sliced lemon on top of the fresh buttery salmon. Jalapeño roll was definitely on the spicier side but was also good. Rainforest roll was wrapped in cucumber and had a nice vinaigrette to it, very refreshing. As for service, the girls here are such sweet hearts! Love This Place I'm actually kind of sad that people have had bad experiences at this place, I've honestly have never had a bad experience here, which is why i keep coming back. I absolutely love this place, and the price is pretty good for sushi, which is why i'm confused as to the complaints on "over pricing." There hasn't been a roll that i've tried and disliked, my favourite is the Lava Roll, definitely a must try. I think maybe the "Specialty Rolls" aren't worth it, but everything else is fine. This place doesn't need a signature dish, is awesome the way it is. The menus let you know which are cooked and which are not, and the service is great. This will forever be my sushi spot. Been here a few times for dinner. One time on a weekday which had a few tables, and another time on a Saturday I believe and it was absolutely packed. Definitely don't recommend going here on a weekend because it does take some time for the service and sushi to come out. But that was okay with me, good food takes time to make. Anyhow, had a few rolls, mango roll, firecracker roll, and jalapeno roll. The presentation is beautiful and the food was even better. The firecracker roll was my favorite, shrimp, spicy tuna and jalapenos on top. Doesn't get any better then that. Nice little liquor bar in there with some strong drinks. I like that. Their sushi selection is also pretty good for anyone who is just looking to try sushi for the first time or have had sushi multiple times before. I've been to Maki 4+ times now. I'm hooked, the fish is incredibly fresh, the rolls are unique as they come. A few of my favorite rolls would have to be the Sumo roll, the Peabody, the Firecracker roll, the Spicy tuna roll and I think the Tuna Kobaichi is the tops.
