We were very surprised to learn this restaurant is take out only, after we made a special trip since it had such a great Yelp rating. I wish I would have visited their actual website in advance. The dining room is now being used for dry storage, which looks terrible and doesn't feel very organized. We considered ordering takeout but then looked over and saw one of the employees' dental retainers soaked in saliva and sitting on a napkin on a table near where you order. Minzu is our go-to sushi place on the North Shore. Easy to order online, and it's always fresh and tastes so good. The rolls are a bit smaller than other sushi places we've tried, but their rolls are also less expensive. Certainly not a complaint--it allows me to order one more roll than I usually order for an added variety. Pick up service is always fast, friendly and on-time. Ample free parking in the lot. Really love this little sushi shop for its affordability and fun customization available online. They also have fun Japanese candy on a table at the door. I would highly recommend pickup vs delivery as they do a mix of hot and cold and sushi is best cold as quickly as possible to your door. While the takeout-only service was a surprise, everything else about the experience was wonderful - friendly fast service (12 minutes!) and fresh firm fish. I ordered #77 nigiri and sushi set and was in 7th heaven with my dinner. They pack everything you could possibly need in a brown bag - low sodium soy sauce, chopsticks, napkins. Just be careful unpacking your feast because they use a lot of staples to ensure your meal survives transport. read more

Maybe my expectations were too high after reading the reviews, but I was pretty underwhelmed. This place is okay. Not particularly good, but not particularly bad either. The restaurant is a little hole-in-the wall place that I would have never found had I not been looking for it. It's very small and simplistic inside so I get the impression they do mainly takeout orders. Especially since clicking "full menu" on their website leads to their GrubHub page. I sat at the sushi "bar" which was really just an awkward counter where I couldn't even see the sushi chef because of all the takeout sushi containers. I ordered the Salem roll, a Minzu roll, and a pair of salmon nigiri since I was particularly hungry that evening. I noticed their "speciality maki" menu was rather limited and most of the roll were Americanized, for lack of a better term. Mostly California roll/spicy tuna roll variations with tempura flakes and different sauces. Not my preference when it comes to sushi personally. The meal was satisfactory, though the quality of the fish wasn't the best. The tuna tasted a bit off (although I'm not a particularly big fan of tuna to begin with). But the rolls were pretty heavy on the sauces so that disguised any unpleasant tastes. Customer service was great and everything was clean so points for that. But since I don't frequently go to Salem I can't see myself going back. read more

I got the spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado with cucumber and Philadelphia roll. All we're absolutely delicious. Super fresh, great pricing better than Whole Foods, Market Basket. And I took it go. I decided to try Minzu Sushi for lunch during the week. The restaurant is very clean, smells great, seems to be very organized. At 1:00pm, there were only two people in there for lunch, so I didn't know what to think at first glance. The menu is very simple (slightly overpriced for the suburbs as there are places in the city that sell spicy tuna for $4.99). I ordered spicy tuna avocado (they charged me $8.00 for the roll because i asked for avocado), spicy girl, a snapple iced tea, and vegetable gyoza steamed dumplings. The waiter serving me seemed, 'mentally challenged," to put it lightly. He could barely seem to comprehend English and he moved at a glacial pace even when I requested something simple like a bottle of Snapple. It was infuriating to sit through. The food was very fresh and good, so I would return, but probably on a different day when they have another server working. read more

Visiting Boston I came across this sushi spot and I was pleasantly delighted. The interior was nice and clean, looked new! Small but cozy. Our waiter Mike greeted us and jaded us menus. To drink he recommended a Japanese soda with a marble in the bottle that was fun to open and also delicious! We had a miso soup with no seaweed and extra tofu and two rolls. The Godzilla and the crazy roll with eel sauce on the side. Both were delicious and made to perfection!! We also ordered a seaweed salad to go that was delicious I had it for lunch the next day and about 2 extra misos cuz they were $2 and delicious! Wow! Just yum and wow. I called in a pickup order for Deep Fried Mini Shrimp Spring Rolls, Salem Maki, Dragon Maki, Crazy Maki and Dynamite Maki. The spring rolls were tasty. Still nice and warm. Good crunch. Typical as far as spring rolls go. Awesome price at under $3. But this isn't Minzu Spring Roll This is Minzu SUSHI... The sushi is amazing. Yum and WOW. Served on your typical take out rectangular sushi plate, my eyes had the first taste. Nicely rolled. Uniformly portioned. Clear difference in the types of maki. Next I found the maki roll did not unravel, nor did anything fall out when I picked it up with my chopsticks. Once I was actually eating the maki rolls the flavors were excellent. No off taste. No too chewy bits, or too crunchy chunks, or non-complimenting textures. Everything came together for one delightful bite after another. Yum. Wow. Yum. Wow. Yum. Wow. (Thats the sound of me chewing). The Dynamite Maki is fried. This was the first time I have ordered fried Maki. It was fun, delicious and something i would order again. Whether or not it is considered "traditional " I do not know but, it was certainly not out of place. The menu consists of sushi, a few starters, a few beverages and sushi. GOOD. Went to Salem Willows with my 2 kids and saw this new sushi gem on Yelp. With the recent reviews, I had to give it a try. First off, the place is small. Maybe 8 tables total and seating for 6 or so at the sushi bar. We were politely greeted, seated and given menus. I was very surprised on the low prices, especially for the special rolls. What was really great was that the menu had an insert with nice pics of all the special rolls. I got the nigiri set (10 pieces of nigiri and a tuna roll.. comes with miso soup) and my son wanted to try the Crazy roll (shrimp tempura and cucumber, topped with crab, spicy mayo, and eel sauce), so we shared that. He also got an order of pork gyoza. My daughter got miso soup and they both got a bowl of sushi rice. The miso soup was very good. A fair amount of seaweed, which I liked. My son also enjoyed the gyoza, which came with a thick plum/soy sauce. The nigiri set came with tuna, salmon, shrimp, mackerel, and yellowtail (2 pieces each). I'm usually not a fan of mackerel, but this had a hint of sweetness/citrus (ponzu perhaps?) which made it very delightful. My only criticism is that fish cuts were a little small (tuna roll was a bit small as well)... but that is balanced by the fact that it was $19.95. Most similar plates like this are closer to $25 at other sushi establishments. The crazy roll was great. My son (who normally is a picky eater, but is just starting to explore the world of sushi) gobbled down 3 pieces with a thumbs up. I'm not a big fan of fried shrimp in my rolls, but I thought it was good. Better is the fact that it is only $8.95. Similar rolls at other sushi restaurants are easily $12-15. We got an avocado salad for my wife to go. Whole sliced avocado with crab salad on top ($5.95). Looks very fresh. Bill came out to $56 with tax and tip. We aren't usually in Salem, but will definitely visit again if we are! read more
