Recently we were walking through downtown Sonoma to do some wine tasting, and we decided to add a stop at the Kamen Estate Wines tasting room. Kamen is known for both its high-end wines and the history of its owner, Robert Mark Kamen. He's the author of many successful Hollywood movies, including "The Karate Kid", "Taken", and "The Fifth Element". There are two tasting flights available in the tasting room: 1) Signature Flight - pours include a rotating selection of the current releases; the cost is $30 per person. The cost will be waived with the purchase of two bottles. 2) Premier Flight - intended for red wine lovers. Pours include library vintages and/or limited production wines; the cost of $50 per person. The cost will be waived with the purchase of three bottles. The tasting room is in a modern looking space in an older building; all the wines the pour come from their estate vineyard. The sommeliers working during our visit were helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable both about the wines and Mr. Kamen's films :-) The pours we tried that day ranged in quality from very good to exceptional. That said, the prices they charge for their wines at the winery are rather high - the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon goes for $125 per bottle, and the 2021 Lava Block Cabernet Sauvignon goes for $205 per bottle. This was such a treat. The tasting was so unique. We sipped the most decadent lingering wines. The views of the land were perfect. I have so much gratitude for my friends who brought me here. We were hosted by Justin. Super nice, down to earth guy who shared the history of the mountain and the owner. I was glad to learn everyone we met during our Sonoma trip had been vaccinated. I stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon around 3:30pm and was helped immediately. I just did a quick walk in, didn't have to make a reservation. Kamen was the only winery I could find in this area with a good selection of Cabernet Sauvignons. I only tried the one posted in the photo below. I consider myself to be a beginner when it comes to wine and this one was really good! It was not sour, it was dry and everything I look for in a cab. Despite the beautiful pics, this location is a very small tasting room in downtown. Friendly staff, small pours for the $20 tasting fee. Wines were ok, but didn't blow us away. I visited the Kamen tasting room in Aug I bought 3 bottle and my sister bought three bottles I opened the last bottle and the cork had leaked. I emailed the tasting room with pictures and got a reply as I transported the bottles any responsibily sat with me. Disappionting. Out of the 6 bottles we bought and transferred in a box supplied by Kamen it is my fault. The comment they would comp a tasting was borderline rude as I am 500 miles away. read more

Kamen definitely has some of the best wines in Sonoma. My group of 5 was lucky enough to have the whole place to ourselves on a Saturday afternoon, so we got a pretty good history and wine lesson from the wonderful host. They offer a $25 or $40 3-flight tasting. As of July 2017, the $25 tasting included 1 white and 2 reds, and the $40 tasting included 3 reds. Even though I splurged on the $40 tasting (maybe the most expensive tasting you'll find in Sonoma), I thought it was so worth it. The bottles range from $125-185 each, and they were some of the best full-bodied, earthy reds I've ever had. The quotes on the wall are all from Kamen's movies - can you guess them all? Apparently only 1 person has been able to so far. Easiest to hardest - left to right. read more

Popped in here right before closing. They had three wines on their tasting menu. It was one of the best tasting combinations we had all day. There was one Sauvignon Blanc, one Syrah, and one Cabernet Sauvignon for $25. Justin was really personable and we chatted with him for a good while. Man. These wines...are unreal. As a native Sonoman, I'm proud to have Kamen Estate Wines on our square. It's easily the best tasting room experience in the plaza and gives you great insight into the little known Moon Mountain AVA (American Viticultural Area). The tasting room itself is quaint, clean and a great environment to taste the amazing portfolio of wines. Don't shy away from the tasting price ($25) because it's well worth it. You're given a bottle of still water and invited to try all the wines that are open that day. Have I mentioned how great the wines are? Ok great, just checking. My favorites are the Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache and Syrah but, everything is outstanding! You'll usually find Kyle behind the bar and he's just the best. Super knowledgable about the wines, where they come from and done with a splendid sense of humor. Bravo Kyle! We went to the Eighth Street Wineries Open House and when they told us we would be entered in a raffle if went to all participating wineries? It. Was. ON. Luckily most of the 8th Street Wineries were steps from each other. When the dust settled we agreed that the Kamen Wines were our favorites of the day. I loved the 2007 Syrah with its strong peppery aftertaste and my friends loved their Cabernet Sauvignon. White wine drinkers may be disappointed as Kamen doesn't produce any white wines. DAMN the wine here is good. I was recommended to this tasting room by one of the other local tasting rooms. As far as red wine goes- this place is doing it right! The owner is some sort of movie screen writer (I think), so there are quotes from famous movies on the tasting room wall. The pourer was a really nice guy who explained all the wines to us and was the one telling us about the owner, the vineyard and the wines. After we had established that I was an avid Cab lover, he let me try the 2010 cab. I was going to buy the 2011 (or was it 2012?) cab and after trying the 2010- I bought a MAGNUM bottle. Aye. It was my big splurge form our honeymoon, but I think it was worth it. It was seriously so good. People keep asking me about what wine tasting rooms we liked the best and this place has come up over and over again. Worth the visit! read more

No trip to Napa and Sonoma is complete without hitting up a winery or two (or perhaps 5). With literally hundreds of options in such close proximity, it can be a serious feat to narrow the choices down into the span of a short visit. Accordingly, when venturing to the area, I sought out the advice of knowledgeable friends. Kamen Wines was not a name I knew beforehand. However, upon advisement we made it fit into our schedule. It should be noted that the current yelp address is no longer accurate and leads to their warehouse, whereas they have recently (we were told about 4 weeks ago) opened a tasting room in the heart of the Sonoma plaza. The new space is clean and modern, and since the owner, Robert Kamen, is a screenwriter, quotes from several of his movies (like the Karate Kid) adorn the walls. When we went they offered two different tasting options, either a Signature Summer Flight for $20 (2011 Sauvignon Blanc, 2009 Syrah, and a 2008 Est. Cabernet Sauvignon), or a Premium Tasting Flight for $35 (2005 Est. Cabernet Sauvignon, 2006 Est. Cabernet Sauvignon, and a 2008 Kashmir Cuvee). However, they did explain that they are willing to waive the fee for both of the flights with a bottle purchase (2 bottles for the Summer Flight, and 3 for the Premium). My travel partner and I decided to go for both options, so we could try the gamut. My taste in wines is a bit eclectic to say the least, but one thing I absolutely demand of my red, is a bold flavor with a decent mouthfeel. Kamen definitely delivered that! I really enjoyed the opportunity to samples different vintages of Cabernets, and found myself strangely drawn to the newest selction, the 2008. All of the Cabs. though were quite robust, with interesting notes and deep inky purples. The bottles aren't exactly cheap, but you get what you pay for in terms of quality. Located just down the small streets of the square in Sonoma, is a small tasting room on your right that has Kamen wines. A bit about this wine, the owner is a screen writer of movies such as: The Karate Kid, Transporter, 5th Element, Taken 1&2 to name a few. So I am thinking this will be an average experience. In their tasting room, they have two flights: Signature (3) and Premium (3). The signature has a a nice crisp Sauvignon Blanc perfect for the spring and summer, The Proprietor's blend that presents itself really well for blends, among the top 15 I have tasted in the last 2 years. Additionally the very nice 2009 Cabernet. Note to self, if you buy any one of these and bring it to a party, you will be well liked. The Cabernet is young, but is good for its youth and can hold or drink now. The Proprietor's blend is the only blend I know that opens up really quickly when tasting, and tastes really nicely with sediment. I know I said it, but its true. The Premium is where you want to be. They feature 3 Cabernet's: 2005, 2007 and 2008. I dont know what it is, but the 07 and 08 are the best new Cabernet's I have tasted in a year by far, and possibly two years. The only two that stand out and struggle with are from Nottingham in Livermore and Lancaster. The 2007 is so well balanced, that it's almost impossible to believe. While the 2008 is a bit less dry and is at a peak that is only matched by the sierra mountains. It is tasting so well right now. It was so good, that I was able to convince someone, while tasting at another winery to come back with us later to try it again. We did, and it was just as good then. John enjoyed it to and was glad he took our suggestion. Make no mistake, visit her and you will enjoy what you taste, oh and call me to so i can be there along with you :) read more

If you love great Cabernet, then this is a must-stop on your wine excursions in Sonoma. The tasting room is modern and minimalist. Not super huge but spacious enough with cool movies quotes behind the counter. Max is a great host behind the bar and extremely knowledgable about wines and wine regions. The Cabs are beeeee-yuuu-tiful!!!! Super lush, and could easily be a Napa Cult Cab. All the wines in their portfolio are wonderful. The tasting fee is not for the casual walk-in, as its $20(?) and $35 for the reserve flight. It is a bit higher vs most of the tasting rooms in the square and the bottle prices also reflect this. That still didn't bother me, I walked away with a beautiful bottle of their Cabernet that I'll try to save for a while and will highly recommend this to any wine enthusiast,appreciator, or anyone looking for fabulous Sonoma Wine. My husband is a fierce collector of wine mainly from Napa. I am a bit more adventurous and I'm always looking for a new find. I've been looking into wines from Sonoma and came across Kamen which was listed as one of the best cult winery in CA. wine country. We made an appointment last Saturday at their tasting room in downtown Sonoma. We were greeted warmly by their staff and got down to the tasting right away. I can't remember all that was discussed, but one cannot forget about the wines tasted. We tasted the Syrah, and a blend (can't remember the name), cabernet sauvignon, and their reserve cab. Wow, their wine is just to my liking smooth, earthy, robust, and long finish. It is quite a find and I highly recommend this winery. read more

In the heart of the quaint Sonoma town center, Kamen has recently opened a new tasting room. Minimally decorated, it feels sleek, refined, tasteful - and the same could be said for the wines. It's not your quintessential pastoral Napa/Sonoma experience; this is more cool urban sophistication. Fair warning, this was one of the pricier tastings we encountered, but as it turned out, the wines were outstanding. We left happy and glad we came. These were inky, robust Cabs, just the way I like them. 2005 or 2006, I was having a hard time determining which one I liked better. Just great - these are wines I could drink regularly. Of course, they cost $100/bottle, and aren't all that common - so my desire to regularly drink the '05 Cab will definitely be squashed by price and availability. The location of this tasting room makes it incredibly perfect to hit before a lunch or dinner in Sonoma - that would be my recommendation. But at any time, if you like big, full-bodied, complex Cabs, I'd say this one is a must-visit. read more

The vineyard (not nearby) is organic and biodynamic (ask them about it, it's really interesting). They had two options to choose from, Signature and Premier. We did both.
