Delicious spot for Thai and Japanese cuisine. I've been there twice so far and it did not disappoint. I recommend ordering the jasmine tea to warm up from the cold. For 3 bucks a person you can get unlimited jasmine (and other types) of tea. Rice in my sushi was perfectly done, salmon and shrimp were juicy, the vegetable in it had a nice fresh crunch and the sesame added a wonderful touch. I could tell everything there is very fresh. The lemongrass, coconut and peanut flavors of the Thai are spot on, classic and delicious. You are getting your money's worth with the portion sizes. Service is speedy and pleasant. Great peaceful location a little ways outside of State College with plenty of parking. The decor is lovely and truly special. They transformed a Victorian house into a beautiful floral and mural filled paradise. Only reason I take off a star is that the sign on the door says no outside food or drink but everyone around me did BYOB so that is confusing. It's also been very loud both times I've been there. It is rare in this day and age to find a quiet establishment with a quaint ambiance and excellent fare. Kamrai manages to pull this off with style. after a long day at work in a loud environment it is nice to sit back and relax to the sound of background music instead of 150 decibel rock music, or the blaring sound of the sports bar with 3 different channels running competing audio at the same time. I was seated promptly and served my drinks almost as quickly. Sodas come with free refills but there is no bar (no saki for me tonight). I do hear that you can bring your own and pay a corking fee if you are dead set on some spirits with your ambiance. The waitress warned me that the special rolls were quite a large portion.It's a good thing she did because they were massive. 12 pieces each close to 1 inch in diameter. I ordered the 12 piece special Mexican roll (rice outside seaweed inside, shrimp, lettuce, advocado, spicy mayo and eel sauce, and masago [fish egg]) as well as the standard California roll (seaweed outside). Also had a Gyoza appetizer. Food was served promptly despite a moderately busy dining room. I have to say the Thai style Gyoza was slightly disappointing as it did not have a memorable flavor or texture, and the sauce was slightly bitter. It wasn't horrible or inedible, just not what I expected. The California roll was par for the sushi course. No complaints there. The Mexican roll however was superb and was the highlight of my meal. the combination of flavors were mouth watering. Dessert was tempura cheesecake and ice cream (chocolate sauce on the side so that i could better taste the dessert). What can I say. you can't go wrong with Japanese style deep fried cheesecake! This is a great sushi restaurant. We ordered 3 rolls, the adventure roll, sex on the moon roll, and the Penn state roll. My favorite was the sex on the moon. We also had the iced thai tea which had a very smokey kind of flavor to it, but very sweet and delicious. I would definitely recommend this place to any sushi lover. Went here for the first time a few days ago. I love Thai food but this place missed the mark for me. I had a hot tea which had no flavor at all even after sitting for 10 mins. The tempera veggie appetizer was pretty good. Miso soup tasted watered down. I had the tofu drunken noodle and was very disappointed. There was no sauce and just tasted like oily noodles with veggies. Husband had green tofu curry and wasn't a fan either. It tasted kind of milky more so than coconut creamy and was kind of weird. Torn on this place as the food is usually very good but the service was just awful on a Saturday night. They were obviously overwhelmed on parents weekend but you either come prepared as a business owner or just don't seat the tables you cannot service properly. Took like 40 minutes to get out appys and they were cold. They were obviously waiting to be picked up by a staff member. They were spring rolls and another fried chicken dish so they had to be hot out of the fryer. Next up the ginger duck. Cold as a bone. Had to send it back and they just reheated it. Super classy. Ultra delicious. People that treat you like family. The chef is from the Chaing Mai area of Thailand where the most delicious of dishes come from in all of Thailand. Everything was seasoned perfectly and our meal was just out of this world. We were seated immediately, our food came out timely giving us each time to relish each course. The waiter and waitress took an active interest in getting to know us and to learn our names. Kitt and Nicky were very sweet and so welcoming. It was such a lovely place to eat dinner and the setting was just absolutely beautiful a refurbished turn of the century home. It was just absolutely incredible. We started with the bomb dumplings and the fried gyoza. Both dishes came out looking spectacular and the flavors were beyond expectations. The Bomb dumplings were filled with a delicious filling of fried chicken, shrimp and roasted garlic. Spectacular. The Gyoza were so delicate they melted in your mouth. For dinner I had the Red Curry and "The Celebs" roll from the Japanese portion of their menu. Both were incredibly scrumptious and painstakingly prepared by the Chef. My Curry was a bit too spicy for me, so I ordered a Thai Iced tea to cut the heat, and Kitt our waiter comped the tea because he knew I used it just to cool off my tongue. It was very very sweet of him. My husband had the Chicken Mango Green Curry and the Tom Kha Soup with Chicken. He said it was one of the very best he ever had. It came in a crock bowl and he enjoyed it thoroughly. He raved and raved about his Chicken Mango Curry, as it was the first time he ever enjoyed such an amazing dish. In fact. He finished it up just before bed as we had plenty to take with us as left overs. Still raving about how incredible it was. Prices were very reasonable for the food we received and if we are ever in State College area again we will definitely be returning to Kamrai. A beautiful restaurant, in a gorgeous section of town, with ample parking and amazing ambiance. GIVE THIS PLACE A TRY!! You will absolutely not be disappointed. They even have a lunch menu with prices that will knock your socks off for the quality of food they deliver. I wish this restaurant and family nothing but the very best in their future endeavors. I suppose I should've been skeptical of a place that offers both "authentic" Thai food (the chef is apparently from Chiang Mai) and sushi --- but then again, Fuji Jade Garden is perfectly capable of pulling off not only The Best Sashimi in town, but also great Sichuan and, as of recent, fabulous Cantonese food... not to mention the creative bar. So... it *is* possible to do a few things well, but it's certainly a rarity. I've been to Kamrai on two occasions, once before they started charging the ridiculous amount of $3 corkage fee, and once after. The service was pretty attentive the first time around, and slightly more spotty the second time; perhaps it was busier that night, but if you're that popular, hire more waiters. Let's start with the "authentic" Thai dishes I've had, all of which I'd ordered "Thai spicy", and, without exception (laarb, nam sod), arrived lacking any discernible spice. Not even "'murrcan hot". The second time I went I had to request chopped up fresh bird peppers to add some heat. While we're speaking of authentic, when will I find a Thai restaurant that claims authenticity and that actually has the traditional condiments on each table or at least available on request? Ya know -- the chopped up fresh peppers in fish sauce, the chopped up fresh peppers in vinegar, the chopped up fresh peppers on their own, some dried pepper, and perhaps some sugar? Not that sugar generally needs to be added to American Thai food, since it's usually loaded with it. The salmon "volcano" was overdone, the bomb dumplings people rave about I found to be pretty uninteresting. As for the sushi.... I guess it really depends on one's personal preference, but I'm just not a fan of overloaded -- sorry, *creative* rolls with so many different ingredients and covered in 10 different sauces that you can't taste what should be the main star of the event: the fish. The sashimi is expensive, so I didn't try it. To make a long story short -- with excellent quality sashimi practically at my doorstep and *actually* spicy Thai food a stone's throw away, I cannot possibly justify a trip to Lemont to satisfy either craving. That said, they did a nice job redecorating the former Alto/Victorian manor, and it's probably a good place to take non-adventurous guest speakers or job interview candidates from out of town. read more

On their fourth night open they were packed! And it wasn't even a weekend evening (well, this is a college town- maybe some would count Thursday as the weekend...). Apparently we're not the only ones who've been eyeballing this place with every drive up Pike Street, just waiting for them to open. We were immediately greeted by a very warm and friendly gentleman, Ray, when we walked in, and were shown to a table on the delightful porch, facing out to Pike Street. Our server, Nikki, is also one of the owners, and she was a joy to interact with- friendly, knowledgable, and kind. Ray and Nikki made a point of introducing themselves, and it makes me happy to know they're in the neighborhood. There's too little of that reaching out to one's neighbors, even in a little town like this one. They did a very nice job on the decoration, retaining the beautiful original architecture while adding a lovely, serene tone. Warm paint colors and a beautiful mural, combined with soft background music, create a comfortable space. And the food? Amazing. Absolutely fantastic. Hubby was so excited that I think he over ordered a bit- we ended up trying 4 different sushi items in addition to an appetizer. The sushi we tried was just beautiful in its presentation, with flowers and other decorations made of vegetables, and colorful, nicely arranged plates. I always enjoy the visual aspects of sushi; I think it's one of the things that elevate talented sushi chefs to true artists. This was some of the prettiest sushi, if you will, that I've ever seen. (I rarely feel the need to photograph my food, but I was snapping away at Kamrai.). And it was excellent. We tried the hot tuna sandwich (a creative take on a tuna roll, and perfectly executed), the Pike Street roll (lots of fresh veggies!), the spicy tuna (love the way they did it, with actual tuna rather than the paste you ordinarily get), the aptly named Fantastic Roll, and the intriguingly monikered Sex on the Moon, which was sufficiently impressive to earn its name (and is, I think, my new favorite sushi). We also tried the pad Thai spring rolls, which were a warm and comforting treat. Definitely one to return to, some chilly night in central PA. As is Kamrai. In fact, husband is already planning to return tomorrow to try the Thai portion of the menu. To summarize: beautiful space, warm and caring staff, and excellent food. Geographically and cuisine speaking, it's weird and bordering wrong, but hey it's a global world... and in central PA this concept seems to do well... so, why not? The major offender was that they did not use fresh rice noodles. Big fat FAIL. Now onto the positives. Living in central PA, we are all painfully aware of the Great Sushi Void. Although Kamrai may not quite fill that void, it's probably the best option for now. We enjoyed the "sex on the moon roll" and "pike street roll". Both rolls were delicious and the "bomb dumplings" were also pretty tasty. I noticed pumpkin curry on the menu, so will have to give their version a try. Service was very friendly. I chose the Tom Kha soup w/tofu to start. It was very good. My friend had the fresh rolls...a generous portion and an excellent choice to start with. I had the Lady finger which was 5 pieces of sushi and a ladyfinger roll. ($21) It was a great choice, especially if you can't decide on rolls or sushi...you get both. My friend had the white Dragon roll ($15)...lots of good stuff on that...huge and filling. We split the fried ice cream ($7)...one of the best! Our foot was not even out the door and we were plotting a return visit...now that is how you know it truly is a great place!! A very rare gem in State College. We stumbled upon this place which is basically inside of a house. The dining area is a little congested, we usually sit in the enclosed patio. The service is very good and fast. The menu is large and has a nice array of thai dishes and sushi to choose from. All the sushi I've had here is very tasty and made very well. The dishes are good and plentiful. I've gotten the sweet chili chicken dish a few times and highly recommend it. The satay chicken appetizer is also very good! As others have said, this place can be a little expensive especially once you start tacking on sushi, but it is worth it. read more

In a word, Exceptional. So, let's begin. We are from NY, upstate, where there are plenty choices of Asian fare, from which to choose. It took us four years, but we stumbled on this place just a few weeks ago while driving around town. We asked around and were encouraged to make reservations. Well, the Penn State kids finally left and reservations apparently are no longer necessary. The service staff were extremely friendly and sat us wherever we wanted. The menu is incredible so give yourself several minutes to thoroughly go over what they offer. Perhaps a little pricey for the area but when you see what they have you will understand why. We had starters including some very spicy (In a good way) soup and a crazy chefs special sushi plate. (see pic). Entrees included Spicy Pad Thai and Lobster Curry (see pic). Both were plentiful and delicious. One issue. My wife was given her appetizer while I had to wait literally 10 minutes for mine. No used to that at all but, we got over it as the meals were fantastic and the service was excellent. We both strongly recommend this place and we will return. read more

Update: Sadly have to give them 3 stars now. I really wanted to for them the benefit of the doubt re: our slow service on my first visit (review below). Went back 2 weeks ago and the service was very slow and disorganized. Arrived ahead of the rest of my party (3 of us in total), and out our name in. Was told 15 minutes and waited 30. A few other groups without reservations were seated ahead of us and another waiting couple-I think because they were 4 and 6 tops. There were empty tables. Hostess told us that they couldn't fill them because the kitchen wouldn't be able to keep up. When we were seated we waited we were given 1 menu to share. 10 minutes later we got two more menus and we asked for wine glasses and water. 15ish minutes after we got our wine glasses, I flagged down the waiter and we ordered our food. 10-15 more minutes 1 app came out, after it was finished and cleared, we got our sushi. Another 10 after we finished that our dinners came out. Start to finish our meal (arrived 7:00 on a Friday) including our wait to be seated took 2.5 hours.
