As often as I do turned to my favorite app YELP to help me pick a restaurant n found a hidden gem - Aoy Thai in Altoona Pa w great reviews. Was 5 mins from I- 99 n thought we'd try. The restaurant is in a strip mall w plenty of parking. Nice clean restaurant w nice ambience. Joe was a friendly waiter , We had the tom kha soup w shrimp n crab Rangoon. Soup was delicious n flavorful and had generous amt of shrimp. The crab Rangoon was good too. So many dishes on menu n had a tough choice. Tried the amazing fried rice w chicken and the pumpkin curry w shrimp. Rice was so tasty w the fried chicken which was spicy. The kabocha pumpkin curry was a red curry n had peppers broccoli carrot n basil w shrimp. Hmm out of this world. Hmm really great. While eating we noticed the next table had the sticky rice w mango which looked good so tried it too n was good. The mangos were really good - not too sweet. We were especially charmed by the individual tea pots for our tea order, and the fact that duck is so prevalent on the menu. We both had the Thai Noodle Soup with duck, and it was just the right mixture of hot/sour/salty and rich. You will be asked what level of spiciness you like, 1-5. My husband chose 1, and I picked 2: Mine came with chili flakes and chili oil among the bean sprouts, garlic scapes, bok Choi and noodles. It chased away my winter blahs! I love Thai food and am very picky. Do yourself a favor and go to this restaurant. Food: I was with a group of 7 and we tried different dishes. Chicken Laab/ Larb: Sooooo goood!!!! Got it "spicy, like Thai" and it's the best larb I've had in a long long time. Do yourself a favor and get it. Khao Soy: Very rich, almost massaman-like base. Worth getting again. The orderer got medium spice instead of high spice and regretted it. Pork Pad Thai: wonderful. Make sure to squeeze the lime and spread the crunchy peanuts. some of the best pad Thai I've had in a long time. Not too sweet (though it was a bit sweet- tasted like natural tamarind sweet, not a tablespoon of sugar sweet), and not too peanut buttery. The noodles were just right, not too greasy, not al dente and not gloopy. The orderer got mild and it tasted fine as it was. I added some powdered chilies for my tasting and loved it. Duck plate (forget the actual name): duck had a very crispy, flaky skin and the sauce it was in was good. The orderer wished they had ordered it with a bit more spice (they got medium spice) Fried rice: didn't try it. Looked like a Chinese style fried rice and the orderer seemed to have enjoyed it (but also seemed jealous of the other food on the table). The orderer got medium spice and wished she had gotten more. The dumplings and satay looked good too, but I didn't get to sample them. Service: the waiter warns you about the 10/10 spice level, relatively quick in getting out food, and attentive enough with water and needs (we ended up ordering more food and accidentally dropping silverware, etc). We ended up asking to bring out more spice and the orderer obliged with some dried and pestled chilies for our table to share. Ambiance: The inside of the restaurant is clean despite being in a run down looking strip mall with a dollar general and a takeout Chinese restaurant next door. The inside is sparsely and simply decorated with a picture of the old king, some basic tapestries you might buy at a tourist market in Thailand, some dolls, and some bright, flashy LEDs in one of the windows. Don't let this dissuade you. THE FOOD IS SO GOOD! 5/5 means it is worth the hour there and back drive to eat here. I will do it again and actively suggest to my friends to eat here if we are looking for a place to go. Summary: For Thai restaurants, I almost always try a curry/ soup, pad Thai/ pad se eew, and a larb/ Nam tok/ beef waterfall. This one nailed all three. read more

This is an absolutely amazing restaurant, with incredible Thai food, some of the best service I have ever received, and the quaint atmosphere. One of the owners, Swee, manages the front of the restaurant. She is very busy managing takeout orders while also being the sole person working all the tables. Prices are very reasonable, and the food quality is superb. I got a khao soi (curry with egg noodles and chicken) and it was so delicious. it was presented beautifully, and the flavors were rich and spicy. I asked it for the hottest they could make, and they did not disappoint. Best Thai restaurant in town. My favorite is the Pad See Ew. I would skip the Thai Iced Tea for next time, wasn't that amazing! My only con is the amount of flies in the establishment. It was quite annoying to eat and flies constantly swarming us and our food. They should get that under control. Minus the flies the food is a solid 8/10! I travel for work and seldom have good meals in Altoona. Aoy was recommended by several people and I was completely impressed by the amazing flavors, textures, temperature, and quality of the food I had. This is a tiny restaurant in a small strip mall but the server was friendly, attentive, and frankly worked her butt off waiting on customers, taking phone orders, and handing out takeout orders. I had a simple meal -- the spring rolls which were fabulous; the yum yai salad which had large pieces of white chicken breast and several whole, peeled shrimp; and for an entree, Thai spicy (no 4) red curry. The curry was hot but nowhere near as hot as I was hoping even after adding more heat. But the flavor, texture, and amount of chicken and vegetables was outstanding. I spoke with several of the other customers to get ideas for my next visit. All the other reviews here are correct -- Aoy is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and I'm so glad to have enjoyed a delicious meal served by a friendly and attentive server. The service was great - it was a one-woman show with one server taking care of both take out and tables, but she did an amazing job! We finally got around to try Aoy Thai and regret waiting so long! Today we stopped in for lunch between classes. We were immediately seated. The waitress was in top of everything, even while managing it all herself! We ordered pork buns and fried milk as appetizers. The fried milk comes over very hot, so we'd definitely recommend waiting a few minutes for this to cook (as it has a custard filling). The pork buns were spectacular - warm and flavorful. For our entrees we ordered the "Miss Me Noodle Soup" (level 3 spice), it was was amazing! The crispy noodles on top really stole the show. The entire dish had so much flavor, and the best part? It was truly spicy! (true spicy dishes seems to be hard to find locally). The "Spicy Egg Noodles" were equally as great. Again, so much flavor, nothing repetitive. Overall, the service was amazing. The waitress kept track of names and offers outstanding service with recommendations, all while multitasking with takeout orders and multiple tables. It felt like a very personable experience. There is no other restaurant for us in Altoona. We have officially dubbed this the BEST restaurant in this town. Started with pork rolls. They hit the spot perfectly. My husband only wished we had doubled the order because they were so tasty. He's actually glad we didn't as the next course included so much food. He went with the 3 flavor chicken and I went with the green curry. Both were very flavorful, and we devoured almost everything. Somehow made space to share dessert. I think I could have handled a spice level 3 as it was a subtle spiciness. Also, got the Thai iced tea which was perfect. Visiting from Long Beach CA and was so excited to find a great Thai place. I normally go for pad Thai but decided to try amazing fried rice. The crispy chicken on top kept its crispy texture even after the sweet n sour sauce was poured all over. I thought I would have leftovers until I had three bites left and just decided that the remainder would be better suited in my stomach rather than a take out container. Service was phenomenal and our server was attentive throughout with water refills. I didn't try the Thai tea but my friend who recommended the place did and it looked tasty. Having visited Aoy Thai several times now I can say this is a nice little restaurant. It's small, only a half dozen tables that seat either two or four so it's not a place for large groups. The menu is diverse with plenty to choose from. They have a nice lunch menu with reasonable prices. I'd definitely recommend both the green and red curry, and the Pad Thai is liked by everyone I've gone there with. All in all it's a great place to get lunch and try something different. FINALLY! Finally found a GOOD (not just decent) Thai restaurant in the boondocks. The best for miles around (see my reviews for all the mediocre establishments we've tried in central PA).
