Went in today to get my son a winter coat & left with a brand new looking North Face coat for less than half price! Lots of cute Halloween costumes this time of year too. I find tons of Ivvia / Athleta brand stuff for my elementary age daughter ... all less than half price! Highly recommend doing the birthday gifts / holiday shopping here too - games, books, toys - many new in package! We need more stores like this - reusing is better for the planet, saves us all money, and is an opportunity to support a small business!! read more

I've been a good customer at this shop for a couple of years, and I have to say that after my most recent visit, I will not be coming back. It saddens me because I love to support local businesses and understand that running a small business is not easy, but I also believe customer service matters. I bought a good amount of pieces for my daughter on a Thursday afternoon, and when we got home, she tried all her pieces. I never have her try the clothes at the store, as it's easy to pick out the right sizes and it's never been a problem. This time, half of the clothes seemed to run smaller than expected. It seemed I had made a miscalculation in choosing the sizes. So since it had been less than 24 hours and the tags were still on, I called and explained this and asked if we could simply come and exchange them for larger sizes. I have always understood that there are no returns, and I did not want a refund, just to exchange the clothes for others that fit. The woman I spoke to, who said she was the owner, said there was nothing she could do. How could there be nothing she could do? She is the owner and she can do anything she wants, especially if she wants to keep her customers. Other businesses with outstanding customer service do make exceptions from time to time, and may say that it will be a one time exception, and this has happened, and I have stayed a loyal customer for years. I even asked if she could take them back as consignment pieces, so I could recuperate a little bit of my money, but she said she was no longer taking summer clothing. It's not like I was returning clothes that were months old, they were purchased less than 24 hours ago. Ridiculous. The owner claimed that the money had already gone into the consignors' account. As if it she had no control over the money anymore. I know how consignment works, I consign clothing myself, and I shop in other consignment stores, so I know it is not out of the ordinary to have a reasonable return/exchange policy and it is also entirely possible to make an exception. It's not like the money was given to the consignor the second the purchase was made. Now I'm stuck with clothes that I have not even paid for yet, and I have to donate them. The selection at this shop has always been hit or miss, but I support the idea of upcycled clothing in the name of being environmentally responsible. But I will have to find a new place to shop because I truly believe that customer service matters. I made a mistake in choosing the right sizes, but I spend a substantial amount of money each time I'm there, and I have been a repeat customer and I think some consideration should have been taken into that. read more

I've been very happy with Kangaroo Kids having been 3 times now in the past 3 months or so. The owner has been pleasant and friendly on each occasion. I believe she said she acquired the store in March and they moved to the new location in May or something like that, so I am fairly certain this is not the same nasty owner from older reviews. I have gotten some maternity pants averaging about $10/pair and some cute baby stuff as well. Baby keens for $5 for example, which I thought was a steal. Good selection of baby/toddler shoes and clothes. I find their items to be reasonably priced, and you might even get lucky on top of that and get something ranging from 20-50% off the tagged price depending on how long it's been sitting in the store. I will continue to stop in here as they seem to constantly be getting new gear from consigners, and I will refer my mom friends to check out this place as well. read more

Have purchased great items here- clothing, toys, and Halloween costumes. I rarely leave empty handed- In the past I consigned here, but - deducting one star because I cannot consign items here anymore. Now the only person who can accept consignment does not work on the weekends and I am not available to consign during the week (I have a 9-5 job). There is no option to drop things off on the weekend and have them evaluated during the week- not even for people who have consigned before. All of my consignments go to Moxie Jean or Second Child now. Also, another star deducted because there is no changing table or diaper genie - at a children and baby store! - on a recent trip we needed to change our daughter and the bathroom was filthy with no changing table and we were told to take our daughter's diaper outside to throw away. A store focusing on kid stuff should at a minimum have a clean bathroom, a changing table and a place to throw away a diaper. Seriously, a changing table could be purchased for $70 and a diaper genie for $25. read more

This is the best children's & maternity consignment store in Chicago. I especially like the kids brands they carry (I've bought stuff from Gap, Tea, Hanna Andersson, Mini Boden, Patagonia). Maternity: Because there's less of it and it rotates based on what people bring in to sell, the maternity selection is more hit & miss with sizes and offerings, but it's still the best place I've found in the city (a low bar for secondhand maternity options). The competition: I used to shop here and The Second Child in Lincoln Park, but I've stopped going to The Second Child because there's much more stock to chose from at Kangaroo Kids, the prices are more reasonable for buying, there's free parking, and it's stroller accessible. Downsides: As others have noted (some with praise and some with anger), the owner has a strong personality and interacts with the customers a lot, but if you want cute reasonably priced kids or maternity clothes, it's worth it. read more

Along with having clean, excellent clothes, the selection is always more than what we expected and we walk away with now than we thought- and yet when we get rung up, we're surprised at what a good deal we're getting! I might be slightly obsessed with Kangaroo Kids! The high-end brands - everything from Mini-Boden to Marimekko - at incredible prices make it a favorite destination when I want to refresh my kids' wardrobes without breaking the budget. I walked away from my last visit with a Hanna Andersson sweater for my younger son (priced under $15!) and a Polo shirt for his older brother - both of which looked brand new. I went in here the other day and will say that they have a nice selection and decent prices. The atmosphere of the store is very...uncomfortable. The owner and another women were chatting loudly to each other (in a very negative tone) the entire time and I could hear their entire conversation. Also, the owner appeared annoyed and not friendly. I checked out this strip mall consignment shop when deciding where to take my child's gently worn & well cared for upscale clothing. So glad that I chose The Second Child over Kangaroo Kids. For the most part, the shop had very low end clothing: Gymboree; Children's Place & Osh Kosh to name a few. The few J Crew, Hannah & Gap pieces I saw were quite old and looked like had been worn by several children. The maternity section carried Target clothing. So if you are a consigner like me and are taking in clothing from upscale children's boutiques (Little Threads, LMNOP, Red Balloon), J Crew, Mini Boden, The Gap, along with Nordstrom & Bloomies, or if you're a shopper who wants to buy these lines, Kangaroo Kids is NOT the place to go. But now they accept very non-upscale items, yet still charge way too much. Oh, and lest we forget the stains! If you're a consignor, it's not worth the effort. You get something like 30% of the sales price but have no control over what things sell for. They can put things on sale for next to nothing and you get what you get (or a fraction thereof). The owner is incredibly rude. I had a few bags of clothes and a couple of large baby toys to take in. I was also carrying my baby daughter and had my two year old in tow. The door is heavy and hard to open, and the owner stood there watching me struggle for a good few minutes, then proceeded to ignore me for at least five minutes because she was talking to a friend who dropped by. There was no, "I'll be with you in a minute," or any kind of acknowledgment other than a raised eyebrow. The only reason I give it more than one star is because when I went back to pick unsold things up, the lady working there (not the owner) was friendly and helpful, and I did find a few toys for my son that were in like new condition. So as a buyer, it's worth checking out, but it's definitely not worth the effort to consign. read more

This is not your average consignment store for multiple reasons: 1. It is strictly upscale brands- you only see brands like mini boden, jack and jill, baby lulu, baby nay- no carters or things from walmart. I think the owner only takes gap or better 2. It is clean! All the toys and clothes are super clean 3. It is not over crowded- all the consignment stores I've shopped in are so overcrowded it is just not enjoyable to shop 4. The owner is friendly, talkative and almost always there 5. The stock does not get old- the owner only allows it to be on the shelves for a certain amount of time so you see new things everytime you go not the same things sitting around forever (like at second child) I have stopped in kangaroo kids on a consistent basis for the past year and a half and have never left empty handed. It is a consignment store so it is hit or miss but I always find something. I have found awesome toys and gorgeous outfits for my daughter for so cheap! They also have books, random other baby necessities, maternity clothes and kids clothes up to I think size 14. I cannot say enough great things for this place- my daughter is dressed very fashionable mostly because of this place. I have never consigned there so I can't speak to that aspect of the store. Check it out you will be impressed- if you aren't the first time don't give up check back because its different everytime I go. read more

I have always loved the store and used to go a lot when they were under old management and located on Clybourn. I do not get up to the new location as much, but still try to stop in every few months. Prices are great and not too high like some consignment shops. They usually have a great variety of sizes and styles, both boys and girls. I love this store! I stop in at least once a week and always find adorable outfits at reasonable prices. The store is bright and spacious, so you can actually look at the clothes. I have been to other consignment shops in the city where the clothes are jammed in and you can't really get a good look at them, only to bring them home and find stains etc. This store also sells toys which are in great condition and half the price. This store has some of the worst customer service I have ever seen. I went in for the first time with my toddler and newborn baby six months ago. It was freezing cold outside and the store owner insisted I change my 4 week old baby's diaper in the blizzard cold. I couldn't really argue with her and went out to struggle changing my poor baby and toddler running around a freezing car. I came back in recently hoping she wouldn't be there or that maybe my memory was wrong. Nope. Same mean woman followed me around the entire store insisting that I was trying to steal her vest from the store because I was trying it on my son. I finally spoke up and told her she should be careful not to be so rude to customers because our business keeps her employed. She started yelling and snapping at me telling me that my children were awful and that I was "clearly overwhelmed"...um yea you think? I have two small children. Thanks but no thanks, that was my final visit to a kids store that is so not kid friendly. I get along with everyone, this woman has lost it. read more

Frustrating customer service! I used to love this store, but I saw that it's under new(ish) ownership which might explain what's going on there. I like the selection and prices, so it's unfortunate that the treatment I received from the owner, Valerie, was so disappointing. I bought a few things for my son including a puffy vest. The first time he put it on at home, the zipper broke off. I went to return it and was told that the owner wasn't there and she would call me back. She did so promptly but only to say that there's "not anything that we can do," and "there's no way to do an exchange or refund." I called back because I felt it would be fair for her to take the vest back and give me the small amount I paid for the vest in store credit - I probably would have gone back in and spent many times that once she had me back in the store, but instead she was extremely rude and told me she wouldn't do anything for me. read more
